MacBook 5,1 Fan Noise During Normal Operation

Recently, my MacBook 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM has started making loud fan noises. The fan speed is steady at around 2,000 RPM (I belive this is normal), and the CPU temperature is staying around 60 degress celcius (also normal, I believe). I have done an SMC reset, done some troubleshooting, Activity Monitor isn't showing anything abnormal, and I have not installed anything recently or been using the machine in any way I haven't in the three years I've owned it.
Is the fan broken in some way? Is the MacBook just aging? Should I take this issue to a Genius Bar?

A lot of people have the same problem with the iX core macs. You can try Fan Control to gain manual override of the fan speed, if it bothers you, but I have to warn you, that semiconductors should not reach a temperature higher than 85C (185F), as some semiconductors will lose their conductivity above 85C. I don't exactly know what materials are there in the iX CPUs, but just to stay safe, don't go over 85C if not necessary. Also you should know, that if a semiconductor operates on high temperatures, it can lose its conductivity sooner than it should (think 25 years instead of 28), so use carefully. You can download Fan Control form http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/

  • Pavilion DV7 2120 ed, above 90 degrees C during normal operating, 1 year old

    Hello,
My HP Pavilion dv-7 2120 ed has recently had his first birthday. Unfortunately the fan started working harder and harder. Yesterday I didn't trusted it anymore, therfore I downloaded Speedfan. He told me during normal operating (internet + music player) that the CPU reaches a temperature above the 90 degrees Celsius.
    Quite a shock!!!
He doesn't seem dirty from inside.
Does someone have the same problem with the same notebook?
    How come?
But more important, what can I do?
    Thanks in forward

Even if there is not visible dirt when you just open the keyboard, for example, sometimes there is a dust clot blocking the fan outlet, that you cannot see until you open it all the way up. After one year it could use new thermal compound between the processor and heatsink, too.

  • MacBook Pro Default Fan Noise

    Hey guys,
I just purchased my new 15 inch mid-2012 MacBook Pro yesterday and am loving it so far. My only concearn is the fan noise. Are the fans supposed to run non-stop regardless of what you're doing? If so, is it normal to be able to hear the fans in a quiet room? It's not loud, just a little breeze.
    Thanks

    New computer.
Spotlight indexing can cause fans to rev up a bit. That is normal.

  • 113 degrees Fahrenheit during normal operation.

I heard about heating problems on the 2011 MacBook Pro, and I was wondering whether 113 degree Fahrenheit durning normal operation (i.e. idling, Mail, simple Safari sites, etc.)?

Most MBPs run hotter than that most of the time. You are probably using yours very lightly. Don't even begin to worry until it goes over 180°F and stays there with its fans roaring. That may never happen, depending on how you use the machine.

  • Macbook pro 13inch fan noise

    hi,
One week old 13inch Macbook pro first problem no usb ports working or sd card reader now sorted, but now I seem to have, what I think is a costant fan noise coming from the top left side,as soon as start up, so no load on the cpu what so ever, and this noise was not present for a week.

  • Retina Macbook Pro strange fan noise

Hi all, i just got my retina macbook pro 2 days ago, however when starting it up for the first time there was a strange noise coming from the computer (probably fans), it was like a blocked fan kicking in loudly but only for a few seconds. I figured that it was nothing but it came back when i used it today and i noticed that this sound is only present when the computer is warm. It only comes for a few seconds and then fades away, is this normal? I'll try to post a recording up here if i can.

I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro Retina . . . took it into my local Genius Bar, where a nice woman identified it as noise from one (or both?) of the fans. She took it apart, removed some debris (couldn't have been much, after a couple of months) and . . .  the computer continues to make this annoying noise.
I believe this must be a serious design flaw on Apple's part, and that they don't know what to do about it.
We can hope that the noise is merely annoying, and not a danger sign.

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Fan/Heat During File Transfer

    Hey guys,
I just had my MacBook Pro Retina in for repair because of an 4HDD/11/400000000: Sata (0,0) error and they replaced the SSD. I have a 2.7/16/768 configuration. One of the main issues I noticed was periodically slow file transfers, load times and boots hanging etc. and a secondary reason was a high-pitched buzzing with heavy disk usage.
My question now is... when I'm doing something as simple as a large file transfer, or installing some apps etc. the MacBook really heats up and the fans really start spinning sometimes. I've never known SSD access to heat up a computer so much. Is this normal behaviour that everyone else is experiencing with their systems? To clarify: this happens when not doing anything else with the machine other than copying files around, also when copying files to/from my external drive which is connected through FireWire on the back of my 27" Thunderbolt display which is then of course connected to the MacBook via the Thunderbolt port.
Expected behaviour? Seems odd to me, but this is my first MacBook so don't know if that's the 'norm' or not.

I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • Macbook Pro 2010 fan noise

Yesterday, my macbooks fan all of a sudden started rattling and making lots of noise, just like in this video: http://youtu.be/IdQvf3WPKKA
Restarting the macbook didn't work as the noise would come right back.
I shut it off for the night, with the idea of trying to find a repair center today (my warranty is long gone). But now it doesn't make that noise any more.
I can still hear the fan rattling really silently.
How do I know if the fan is working properly and not overheating the laptop?
Do I have to replace the fan?

  • Black MacBook 2006-2007 Fan Noise

    Hello guys, name is Neal.
    I have a Black MacBook, 4GB Ram(I upgraded in August of 2012), 250GB HDD, 2.16 Core 2 Duo.
Anythime I watch a video on YouTube, or download something, my fan jumps from 2200 RPM to 6200. It maxs out. The temperature goes to around 80-90 degrees Celcius. Its really annoying and sometimes shuts down. So recently, I sent my Macbook into Apple, and they recased the bottom portion of the MacBook casing and the fan and heatsink. But it still makes so much noise and makes my computer lag and run very slowly at the speed of 6200. Sometimes, the bottom of the Mac gets so hot, I can't even touch it. I almost got burned. They even gave me a new battery, but that didn't solve it.
    Any ideas?
I thought it could be flash, but how can I solve that. Other than this, the computer runs great, like if I'm typing a paper its ok. But if I'm editing a movie or surfing the web and playing music from iTunes, the computer fan and tempertaure flip out. I even have Smc Fan control and leave it at a setting of 2500 RPM, istatpro, you name it. This is one fo the main reason I upgraded the Ram , but no use.
    Help please?

To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
    The model 2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007) can use 3gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 3,1 (Late 2007) can use 6gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.

  • Brand new macbook pro retina - fan noise when running hola?

Hi everyone, I need some help here please!
I have a brand new macbook pro retina 13 - just bought in January this year - and have had no problems so far apart from the wifi dropping occassionally.
So I just downloaded hola unblocker for firefox but whenever I stream anything using it on netflix my fan starts whirring so loudly - it's never even made a noise before! and I can feel the base of the mac getting hotter. So I've closed hola/firefox and it stops after a minute or so. I've tried a few times again with the same problem.
I'm just using it to watch US netflix so probably not technically legal anyway.... but other friends manage it no bother - do mac's just know I'm doing something wrong? haha
    Thanks for any advice.

Try running Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder). Click the Energy button at the top and then stream a video. Watch the Energy Impact.
I suspect what you'll see is that your rMBP is doing a lot of work while you're streaming the video, and that makes it get hot. The fan struggles to dissipate the resulting heat in order to prevent damage and makes noise in the process.
It may also have a guilty conscience.

  • Macbook pro hot fan noises

I just bought a MacBook Pro 13" 249GB with Retina Display a few weeks ago. Before, I had the MBA (I took it in because one of the USB ports never worked). I am just a little concerned about the hotness. Sometimes it gets really hot and the fan kicks on to cool it off. The thing is, I'm just surfing the internet, not even doing that much of a laborious task. I understand that computers get hot and naturally cool themselves off, but this never happened this often with my MBA.
Yes, I will admit I do spend the nights/mornings on the bed, which isn't that great for the ventilation, but even when the Pro was on the desk the fan went on.
I just want to make sure that I don't have to take my Mac to be repaired again for a problem that was there from day 1.
Also, what would be some good programs to check the temperature? I downloaded IStatic Pro, but when I opened it I didn't see anything. (maybe because it was a widget??)

    First perform a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
I recommend iStat menus as a temperature monitor:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When your MBP gets hot, open Activity Monitor and see what applications are being resource hungry and check what temperatures are being generated.  You are welcome to report this information for evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • [MSI N275GTX Twin Frozr OC] Outrageous fan noise during boot-up

After reading a lot of reviews, I bought myself one of these babies:
I had a tremendous shock when I've powered up the system (after installing the video card): the two small fans are revving up to full speed for about 5 seconds  ... and the noise is so loud that I can wake up my neighbours. Is there any possibility to modify a BIOS for this card in order to reduce the fan speed when booting up the PC? (I'm affraid I'll have to swap those fans even if losing the warranty).
    Thanks for your support

The start up noise is quite irritating, but in use this cards thermal management cannot be faulted. Mine is used for regular folding and numerous 3d games. The card will go to about 75C with a fan speed steady at 35%. Higher temps and the fan gradually increases. With my case, I just start hearing the fans from about 40% and up.
I have experienced the same artifacts that you are talking about. My PSU also supplies 4 X 12V @18A max with a total of 41A on the 12V rail.
Just as a side note, I use the MSI Afterburner tool to monitor and adjust the card. Interestingly enough, the artifact problem has only occured in Direct X9 games. I run Far Cry 2 in Direct X10 everything maxed out to Very or Ultra High as available in the menu, resolution at 1920X1080 and have never had a problem.
What I have tested now is a slight downclock via Afterburner. The core clock and shader clock are linked, unless you physically unlink rhem for individual adjustsments. I declocked my core to 648 and the shader then sits at 1436. This solved the artifact problem and the card is now smooth. I started with lower core clocks and then worked my way up. at 650 it started with artifacts. So 648 seems to be about the max.
I would be suspicious of the PSU if the card did the same in Far cry2, but it doesn't. But then again, my total power consumption in that game only goes to about 320W.
With some other games it goes to 335 or 350W. So I am not convinced about the power issue. My dealer will check it out when they re-open early next year.
I am still going to try it though in the new i7 system to see if it does the same. I am fortunate that both the systems have identical cards, and the one in the i7 I can actually OC by about 10% above the factory OC. Just need to make the time to do the swap.

This does not happen in safe mode.

I ran out of ideas as for the cause of the problem or it's solution.

  • DB2 Log file retrieval during normal operation

    Hi,
We recently upgraded our databases to DB2 v9.7 FP1 and started noticing entries in the db2diag.log that state a log file is being retrieved (after it was archived). We are not performing a restore, although this only seems to be happening during the time our online backup is running.
This is one example of an entry in the db2diag.log:
