MacBook A1181 RAM?

Let me start off by saying I never really post to these boards or anything.  I have sold hundreds of MacBooks on eBay, repaired most of them myself, and so forth so the obvious answer to my question is probably a bad logic board but I would just like confirmation.  However this might be power related as well.
Here's the problem and I looked it up before posting too but couldn't find anything along the same lines:  Two sticks of RAM won't work in certain MacBooks.  Now this isn't nailed down to just CD, C2D, 06's, 07's, and so forth - I've had a few from each and every year that does this.  You can put a working RAM chip in either slot and it will boot up just fine, recognize the memory and work with no problems. You try to put another chip in the other slot and the screen stays blank and refuses to boot, it will power on but no chime.  I have used known working chips, matched pairs, non matched pairs, 800, 667, everything I can think of.  I've tried zapping the PRAM, resetting the SMC, command option PR, everything before putting another chip in there, while the other chip is in there, and even tried cleaning the logic board.
So anyone else out there had this problem and if so fixed it?  Or will I be stuck selling them with a single stick of memory even though the RAM slots are not technically defective?  Any advice or personal experiences would be great because this is about the only thing I haven't been able to figure out.  Thanks in advance.

Well yeah, I'm using RAM pulled from other A1181s, it's PC2-5300 but you want to know something else funny?  The RAM that is currently in the MacBook Core Duo that I'm having issues with (this is the current one now mind you, I've had the same issue with almost every year up to 09s) is PC2-6400 and it's working fine, of course slowed down to 667.  All of my RAM chips are coming from other MacBooks, put them in other MacBooks and bam they work fine, put them in here in either slot and they work fine, but not together.  It's funny you mention the 800/667 because this same chip (this 6400 I'm talking about) I can get to work in an 09 which it's supposed to, but not an 08, but it will work in an 06 Core Duo.  Strange right?  I'm thinking logic board honestly but appreciate your help.  I have about 25 pieces of RAM here, mainly 512MB Hynix that I'm using but also Micron, Corsair, and Samsung.  So I pretty much have all options.

  • Macbook A1181

First of all just want to say thanks for these forums and look forward to many posts. I recent purchased a Macbook A1181 white, I think its a 2006 version. Cor 2 duo 2 GB of ram. I bought this knowing there was issues with the top case and some keys not working. I purchased a used topcase off ebay. I recently got the top case and took the mac apart to install the new topcase. When I put it back together the unit will not power on even when I tried the old top case also no power. One thing that did happen was when I took it apart there is a gold cable coming from the hdd which looks to go into the front maybe an led light that broke. Also the battery on this machine is no good but worked up to this point without the battery also the charger light does not work. I did try another known working AC adapter on the machine with still no power. Anyone have any ideas on what to test? Can I test the DC board for power? Thanks in advance everyone!

You have a late 2006 MacBook with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. As long as you have a minimum of 2GB of memory (4GB is recommended), you can install OS X 10.7 Lion.
You'll need a 2.5" serial ATA (SATA) hard drive to replace the one that's not working. If you'll do it yourself, you should check what's installed in it today, to confirm the hard drive height, which is most likely 9.5mm.
Unless your friend gave you an OS X 10.6 DVD, you'll need to buy that from your in-country online Apple store by calling them, which in the US is 800-MY-APPLE.  You'll also need to buy a download code for Lion from the online Apple store, as only Mountain Lion is available from the App store (this MacBook will not run OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion). You have to call the online Apple store to buy either, as they are not available online.

  • MacBook A1181 upgrading

I got my hands on a MacBook A1181 (3,1) and I was wondering what is the maximum amount of RAM I can put in it, and can I put in a 500GB hard drive?
Some people say 2 GB some say 4GB, and do i need to get a specific hard drive from Apple or can I just go to Frys and get a nice WD hard drive? The same goes for the RAM. What kind of RAM do I need to get for it?
If you need more info regarding the laptop I would be happy to provide it.

  • Reinstall MacOS 10.7 Lion on Macbook A1181 Problem

    Hello,
I have an urgent problem to be solved, if you can do it, pretty please. I have received as payment, an old Macbook A1181, mid 2007, with 3gb RAM in plus of its basic configuration. It camed with Lion 10.7 on it, but full of old files, settings, and with a user account of the old owner. This night, JUST before I will give it as a gift further to my girlfriend, I wanted to erase it and restore it back to its factory settings. I saw a few films on youtube on how to do it without disk. I have read on Apple forum the instruction and everything looked easy. I started, and now at the  Reinstall Mac OS X step, after verification, it ask me for the credentials of Apple account who bought the Lion Upgrade. I called at the guy who gaved me the notebook to ask him if can do something about it, or just give me the credentials for few seconds. And his answer was that the Lion I had on the notebook wasnt official, it was just tooked from the internet and he doesnt know nothing about what can I do now.
My problem now is I have a Macbook stucked in the Mac OS X Utilities screen, and I dont know what to do. I would like to buy the upgrade, but I dont know if it works if the notebook still thinks I have Lion, and I just want to reinstall it. Also I have pressed option(ALT)+command+ R during boot, and I dont see the screen where I could buy the upgrade. In the app store on others PC I see i can buy it, but it comes in 1-3 days even if i just buy it online and i need it in my account to show as bought.
What can I do in this moment? How do I do a roll-back at least at an older version of OS X ? A fast and good answer will be very thanked. I am worried, and in a hurry. Thank you.

You’ve run into the one problem with the newer Operating Systems (10.7, 8, 9). They are tied to the users Apple ID and password so that no one else can re-download them. The older Operating Systems (10.6, 10.5) came on a DVD and could be used by anyone. Just pop in the DVD and erase the drive and reinstall.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion which is a download only.
For 10.7 Lion you can get a redemption code to use in the App Store here. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

I have a circa 2006 MacBook A1181 EMO#2092 with 2 GB RAM and 2.0 GHz processor. What is the latest MAC OS X version that I can run on this machine ?Currently running v.10.4.11. Trying to confirm v.10.6.8 or v.10.7.5 as latest OS X version possible for this machine. This is a standard MacBook; NOT MacBook Pro.

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard.
The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion.

  • Upgraded MacBook A1181 to 8x Superdrive, Drive Has Power But Not Recognized

    Model: MacBook A1181 Black
    OS: 10.6.4
    Other: 13", Black, 2GB Ram, 500GB HDD, 2GHz
Yesterday I upgraded my Black 2Ghz Core Duo A1181 Macbook from a 4x UJ-857-C Superdrive to an 8x GSA-810-N Superdrive because the UJ-857-C had stopped working. The replacement is a NEW Apple branded Superdrive.
After completing the hardware replacement, I booted the computer and heard the new Superdrive get power during the boot sequence, so w/o checking system profiler, I put a DVD in the drive. It accepted the disk and sounded like it was reading it, but no disk mounted.
I then checked Disk Utility and there was no disk present and in System Profiler, the drive is not recognized at all. Thus the eject button doesn't work, so the disk is stuck.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why the drive would not be picked up by the computer? I don't believe the SATA cable is faulty since the drive is receiving power, and I don't believe the drive is faulty since it accepted the disk and all sounds were normal. Is there some type of procedure I need to go through to get the MacBook to recognize the new drive?
Thanks - Any help is appreciated.

When you say "not recognized" do you mean when you look in Apple/About this Mac/More Info/Disk Burning that you see nothing?
    My entry looks like this:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:
    Firmware Revision: BP08
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
An appledrive shouldnt need a driver install.

  • Macbook a1181 cannot access System Preference or any apps such as Safari, iPhoto, etc.  How can I fix this?

Hi, I recently purchased a used MacBook a1181 and cannot access anything.  I am new to Apple computers/laptops so I don't know if there is a simple solution or if it's maybe a HD problem?  I tried to go into System Preferences and nothing happens.  The dock (?) at the bottom also has a bunch of question marks. When I scroll over the question marks, I can see apps like Safari, iPhoto, etc. but I cannot open anything.  I also tried to go to About this Mac and can't get anywhere either.   Any ideas what could be wrong?

" The dock (?) at the bottom also has a bunch of question marks"
So usually that means that the applications are missing. It's like in a PC where the "Short Cut" link is broken.
"When I scroll over the question marks, I can see apps like Safari, iPhoto, etc. but I cannot open anything."
So just like when shortcuts are broken and for the same reason: applications are moved, renamed etc.
    and with this:
"I also tried to go to About this Mac and can't get anywhere either. "
    Probably a bad install.
"When I tried to re-install the OS, the disc would spin and then eject.  I tried several different installation CDs and even an external DVD player and each time the CD ejected out without installing. "
What disks are you using? The originals would be Tiger and gray, 10.4.8 (Not the retail installer which would be 10.4.0.), Leopard, Snow Leopard. So 10.4.8 to 10.6.8 compatible.

  • MacBook A1181 Question and Emergency.

Hello. My Uncle gave me his MacBook A1181 three days ago with a problem. I've read some forums online and my problem is that the MacBook had an overheat problem. What happened was my uncle was using it and all of a sudden it shut off completely, and the bottom was very hot, and could only turn on and work fine when plugged into a charger. So what happened was I looked into the logic board and noticed a large amount of dust trapped in the fan and heat sink. I've cleaned it out. Disassembled the fan, cleaned it, vacuumed the rotors, and am reassembling everything back together. And I thought that also it was a problem with the DC board. As I was CAREFULLY getting the DC board out I had to take off the logic board first. And as I was removing it CAREFULLY, I noticed that 1 of the four tiny metal brackets between the Audiojack and Battery adapter plug to the logic board was missing, and I found it laying against the wall of the bar holding all of the side ports. And my emergency is.. DID I JUST KILL THE COMPUTER!? It's 1 out of the billions that are on the board. None of the little connectors on the Battery Plug Adapter are damaged.. So I want to know if I killed the computer? :c and the DC board seemed fine. Battery could charge. Nothing strange. But I need to know. Do I still have to replace the fan? Or do I need the fan and a whole new logic board? :c help would be VERY much appreciated! If anyone thinks it might be a problem with the DC board anyway, I'd be happy to know the reason why. And the charger I had got fried. So before I do anything I want to know what you guys think.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

  • Macbook a1181 airport antenna cable socket problem

Was replacing cracked screen on Macbook A1181 and in the process (quite unfortunately), both black and white antenna cables for the airport card were yanked from (ripped out of) their metal sockets.  Tried to delicately feed the cables back into their respective socket without success, and unsure how to proceed.  Is it possible to recrimp these cables into the sockets (and if so, anyone have a video for the required microsurgery?)?  Or do they have to be soldered in?  Would really prefer not to have to buy new parts but perhaps these are now wrecked?  Thanks for any advice...

Maybe something on this page will help:

  • Macbook A1181 - Internal Keyboard issue

    Hi,
I am a computer engineer with many years experience dealing with Computers, Laptops, Electronics, Windows and Mac.
I recently performed a strip down and clean of a Macbook A1181 for a customer as it was over heating and turning off.
All went well no problems or glitches and the Macbook is now running smooth with no over heat or shut down problems.
Unfortunately The keyboard seems to be giving a little trouble.
Firstly all software settings seem correct and all the keys function as should on a USB keyboard.
The internal keyboard (using the onscreen keyboard to debug) when I press the left hand shift key it presses both the shift + letter O
When I perss the letter O it thinks im pressing shift + O so all I get is capital O's can not get small o.
also (it is a spanish layout keyboard Ç,cedilla next to return key) when I press it it thinks im pressing it and the return
also when I press return it thinks im pressing Return + Ç
I have stripped down again made sure the ribbon cable is good and seated correctly, I have cleaned with Compressed air and light brush, as a last resort last night I have bathed the keyboard in 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (have done this on hundreds of laptop keyboards to clean tea, juice etc)
But again this morning the keyboard has the same problems?
Any ideas what could be the problem or what I can suggest to fix (a new keyboard and top deck is going to be expensive)
    Thanks
    Mark

Perhaps you may be able to locate an otherwise good keyboard assembly
from another previously-owned MacBook that has a different kind of failure.
One with a logic board or graphics failure could be a parts candidate, here.
I'd never heard of a need for nor anyone cleaning a known-good Apple keyboard
in a portable Mac, with alcohol. I know they'd cautioned against using it on the
case, the display (prior to hard glass cover) & other instances, in previous years...
However your efforts and attempts to restore function to an ailing MacBook
are commendable; the use of known good used parts may suffice in a repair.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook A1181 switches on only after 8-10 attempts. Why does it need to be "hot"?

    Hello friends,
I have a problem with my Macbook A1181 : it switches on only after 8-10 attempts. Seems that it has to be "hot" to switch on.
After the boot, it works fine and I can restart it thousand times without any problem. That's because (I guess) it's going warm on the inside.
This macbook is completely clean on the inside (did it by myself), new thermal grease, fans clean, is like brand new!
I've tried also a reflow of the nvidia chip, but nothing changes. To me, it doesn't depend by the overheat chip problem, very easy to fix.
I've tried every solution (PRAM, SMC, and many other Mac tricks) but nothing helpful.
What problem could it be? I'm not a newcomer in repairing pc's and mac's, but this issue is really new to me!
I hope you can understand my bad english...
For any detailed question, just ask !
    Thanks in advance for help

its since I updated to final cut 6.0.3
This problem is not unique to just me, a search for "compressor unknown time remaining" in google shows alot of people with this issue
    http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=compressorunknown+timeremaining&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
sadly, I have yet to find a solution other then it working on 6.0 and 6.02
please do not say its user error when I have tried all the so called workarounds and none have work.
it works when I let it connected to the ports it connects to, if I do not let it connect to the ports, it doesnt work
