Macbook acts weird unless disk in superdrive

So I recently got this macbook, I have had it for three months. I really like it for the most part. There is one exception though and it seems to have something to do with the cd drive (it might not even be a problem i might just be a noob). Whenever I wake the macbook from sleep it makes the usual sound from the cd drive but if no disc is in the drive the computer will be basically frozen for about 30 sec then just works normally. For the most part I can deal with that but it happens at other times too. If I open the disk utility it will make the same sound that it does when it wakes up and then will freeze for a short time with a spinning color wheel then it will go away. It also happens if I go to the "Serial-ATA" section under more info in "about this mac". The weird thing is none of this happens if a disc is in the drive not even the waking up sound

I just wanted to add that any time I press the eject key on the macbook it will temporarily freeze to. Is this normal? I have seen other macbooks that open disk utility and can use it almost immediately but my macbook will be frozen for a minute.

  • Does low disk space make my Macbook Pro act weird?

Hi! I have an early 2011 15" MBP with a 750gb hard disk space. Just the other day, while I was using photoshop with my laptop, the screen went off so I had to reset it. My laptop acted weird after: doing a screen split (the right part goes to the left and vice versa), one time it had weird pixels that were scattered all over, recently, a blue striped screen. All of this froze my laptop by the way. And all of this happened after a few minutes of usage. And I noticed if I use photoshop, it would only take a little amount of time before it would act weird again compared to when I don't. All the times caused me to reset my laptop by holding the power button.
Yesterday, it wouldn't boot past the gray screen after resetting about five times. But after it turned off by itself, I tried turning it on again and it booted normally. And I could use it normally again, but with extra care (using it beside an electric fan, checking the temperature with iStat pro).
I tried the extended Apple Hardware Test but it told me no trouble was found.
Another thing was, everytime my laptop froze and did the weird screen thingy, my laptop was hot.
I tried to use it again yesterday to just surf the web, and after some minutes it was still functioning. But I remember one time I was only surfing the web, it did the split screen and froze after almost an hour or so.
Also, my laptop heats up quickly compared before. And can stand being hot for a long time until now.
I haven't used any heavy applications besides photoshop to test my laptop's weird behavior by the way.
So I guess it's because of the laptop's heat. Because I can only use it for a very short time when using photoshop but I can use my laptop for a longer time when only surfing the web.
I also noticed that if I was forced to reset my laptop and turn it on again, it would boot longer than normal. But if I was able to shut it down properly and turn it on again, it would boot normally.
And, just a while ago, I remembered my laptop's disk space was only 14gb from 750gb (downloaded a lot of series since I bought my laptop). So maybe what's causing the heat was the low disk space. Just a guess.  So is it possible that my laptop is behaving weird because of the low disk space?

The problem is back. But this time, it only happened when I used photoshop or played a 1080p video. I was using my laptop for almost 3 hours when i decided to use photoshop. It froze as soon as it started and made my screen display weird pixels. I restarted and tried to open photoshop again and this time, it froze. I did it the third time and after using PS for a minute, it did the split screen. After restarting yet again, I tried to play a 1080p video to just test my laptop. It froze as soon as VLC started. But when i only surf the web (which is the only thing I did before using PS), everything goes well. So I guess it really is the GPU and not the logic board or some other parts. I've decided to just have my laptop checked.

  • My MacBook was acting weird so I restarted it and when I login a white screen flashes and goes back to the login page. Help?

My MacBook was acting weird like sometimes I would log on and I wouldn't be able to type my password for a couple seconds, but it usually logged in after that. Then I left my computer open after installing the recent update after that all my applications were not responding. So I shut it down, when I turned it back on about an hour later it went to this loading screen and then to the login like usual. After I tried logging in a white screen flashed and it went back to the login/ password screen like nothing happened. Any ideas on what happened and what I can do to fix it?

    Reinstall OS X;
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

  • MacBook Pro acting weird at startup

    Hi,
First of all thank you for reading this, it's quite a long story. And sorry for any grammatical mistakes, I'm Dutch.
    Summary
My MBP suddenly has been acting really weird: kernel_task eating 150-200% of the CPU which caused a super slow MBP, power button not working well, and MBP shutdown after ten minutes without touching it and with the battery on 90%. I did a clean install of OS X Lion, some PRAM and SMC resets and removed the MacBookPro7_1.plist file from the system library. The kernel_task high CPU problem is now fixed. But the power button is still not working: most of the time my MBP shuts down three seconds after I push the power button in a first attempt. In the second attempt I hold it for like five seconds and this works. Sometimes it works fine on the first attempt. Restarting the MBP from the desktop works fine. I'm also worried about the random shutdown. What could probably cause the problem with the power button and the MBP shutting down when I don't touch it, and is there a way to fix this myself? I'm not really into tech, so please keep your answer simple.
My MacBook Pro "13 (mid 2010) with OS X Lion has always been a charm since I bought it. I've never had any problems with my MBP until now. Two weeks ago I was going on a holiday and had to check a few things on my MBP in a hurry right before I was leaving. I'm afraid I forgot to turn off my MBP before I went on my holiday, but I can't remember this exactly. When I came back after a week, my MBP started acting weird at startup and then became really slow. The kernel_task was eating my CPU with 200% and I've tried many things to fix the MBP myself but it still isn't working well. I hope you can help me with this.
    This is what happened:
    1. When I push the power button to start my MBP, the first time it shuts down three seconds after I push the button. After the first attempt I hold the power button for five seconds, and my MBP turns on the right way. After all the fixes I've done this is still an issue.
    2. When I finally got my MBP started the first time after my holiday, it was really really really slow. I later found out that the cause was the kernel_task eating my CPU. It was using 150-200% with no applications running.
    3. The MBP was acting normally (not slow) in safe mode, but in safe mode I couldn't open some sites in Google Chrome, like Facebook and Google Maps. So this didn't work either (and was not the solution to my problem).
    4. I did some things with PRAM and SMC reset but this didn't work.
    5. A clean install was already on my mind for weeks, so I decided that this was the right moment. After I did a manual backup (not with Time Machine) I restarted my MBP holding some buttons to startup the OS X Utilities screen. I first erased my Macintosh HD and then I wanted to install Mavericks because that was the only option from the menu. It took me five hours and at the end it came up with a 'can't download Mavericks, try again' screen. The MBP wasn't starting up anymore because OS X Lion was already erased.
    6. So I became annoyed and decided to use my original Snow Leopard dvd which came with my MBP. Installing Snow Leopard took me two days!!!!!!!
    7. When I finally got Snow Leopard installed, it still was really really slow and the kernel_task was messing up my CPU again.
    8. After some hours of searching on the internet, I read the following thing: fixing the kernel_task problem was easy by removing a file from the system library (http://www.rdoxenham.com/?p=259). Of course I've researched this solution because I'm not a fan of changing things in the system. But I decided to give this a try and it worked! Like a charm!
    9. I still was on Snow Leopard and decided to upgrade to Lion again, because I did know for sure that my MBP could handle Lion and I wasn't sure with Mavericks. So I first downloaded Lion from the App Store and then opened the installation program. This took me one day again, probably because the file from the system library was put back with the installation of Lion...
    10. When I finally got Lion running, the kernel_task was using a high CPU% again so I removed the file from the system library again and restarted my MBP. This worked.
    11. I'm working on Lion for a day now and I've installed some applications (Adobe CS5 Master Collection, Office for Mac, updated my 17.000 mails in Mac Mail, and installed some browsers). It's working fine and the kernel_task is at 1-10%. The issue with the power button is still there but sometimes it works fine at the first attempt. Yesterday my MBP suddenly shut down when I didn't touch it for like ten minutes. The battery was still on 90%. Maybe this was caused by the fact that my MBP was running for four days non stop because of the OS X installations, and it was a hot day yesterday.
So this is what I've done so far in this order:
    1. First of all I did a manual backup on my external HDD. Not with Time Machine.
    2. I tried to restart my MBP multiple times. Restarting from the desktop worked well, but shutting it down and than turning it on with the power button didn't work well.
    3. I did PRAM and SMC resets multiple times.
    4. I decided to do a clean install and erased my Macintosh HD from the OS X Utilities screen at startup.
    5. Then I wanted to upgrade from Lion to Mavericks but Mavericks couldn't be downloaded.
    6. I've installed Snow Leopard from the original dvd, this took me two days.
    7. I've followed the instructions from http://www.rdoxenham.com/?p=259 (remove the file MacBookPro7_1.plist from the system library) and this worked for my MBP.
    8. Because my MBP was working fine again, I decided to upgrade to Lion. This took me one day.
    9. My MBP was really slow again: Lion put the MacBookPro7_1.plist back in the system library so I removed it again. This worked.
    10. The problem with the power button still holds so I did a SMC reset again. Didn't work. My MBP also shut down yesterday when I didn't touch it for like ten minutes. I hope this was caused by the fact that the MBP was running for four days non stop, and it was a hot day so maybe it was overheated.
So everything is working fine again, but the power button still isn't. Most of the time my MBP shuts down three seconds after I push the power button. In the second attempt I hold it for like five seconds and this works. Restarting the MBP from the desktop works fine, and the kernel_task is now using 1-10%. I'm also worried about my MBP suddenly shutting down. Is there a way to fix this myself?
    Thank you!
    Regards,
    TokkieTor

    TokkieTor,
This is the full error message I got from the test:
    4SNS/1/40000000: IP0R-9:166
I read that those letters (IP0R) stand for different errors in the hardware, in my case it's something with the Power Bus according to this website: http://www.cnet.com/news/how-to-invoke-and-interpret-the-apple-hardware-tests/.
Again, I'm really not into tech so what is a Power Bus and should I be worried?
what you have is a problem with a sensor which monitors power bus current. The power bus is the main pathway along which electricity travels in your MacBook Pro. If the sensor isn’t individually repairable, then you could have reason to worry — if they tell you that a logic board replacement would be needed, then that could cost hundreds of euros. (One would hope that replacing a sensor would not require a logic board replacement, but only hardware experts can say for sure.)
I think that posts here are only editable for ten or fifteen minutes after replying.

    Hello again, mariah
Unless you erase your hard disk as part of your reinstallation, your data files should be safe on your iMac's startup disk. Whether you erase or not, your data files will be safe on your backup copy, so be sure you have a good backup! If you do not have a current backup, NOW is the time to backup your important files. Having at least one good backup copy of expensive or irreplaceable information is good insurance regardless of whether you decide to reinstall OS X.
Sorry about the Leopard reference. You can reinstall the Photo Booth that came with your Tiger version of OS X using the same methods I mention above except that they will be in your Tiger disk.
Although you may decide that you want to reinstall your Mac OS, you do NOT need to do so to reinstall Photo Booth and your OS X bundled applications. If you have decided to Reinstall your Mac OS, carefully consider which method you want to use to reinstall.
If you use the "Archive and Install" (A&I) method and choose A&I's "Preserve user and network settings" option, your data will be preserved and you will save significant time versus other reinstall methods.
Unless you have already tried reinstalling only the Photo Booth application or are having problems with more than one of your iMac's functions, you should consider reinstalling only the Photo Booth app first. Reinstalling only the Photo Booth app may resolve your problem without the time and effort required for reinstalling your Mac OS. See the "Reinstalling the Software That Came With Your iMac G5" chapter of the Users Guide manual that came with your iMac if you need help on how to reinstall the apps only. Alternatively, you could use the Pacifist method I mentioned earlier with the Tiger disk that came with your iMac.
If all this is more than you want to contemplate merely so you can use Photo Booth, you might rather consider installing and using one of these Photo Booth alternatives: Funny Photographer or Freak Show.

  • Losing network connection and NIC acts weird from warm/hot weather/temperatures?

    Hello.
Is there a known issue on MSI P43 NEO3-F (MSI-7514) motherboards' onboard RealTek RTL8168C (P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC network disconnecting and acting weird during warm/hot weather?
I noticed lately and back on 1/11/2009 night when weather got warm/hot (e.g., my room can get over 85F degrees, but lately it has been 80F degrees), my network would lose its connection. See http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5580/screenshots.gif for a few SpeedFan's sensor readings when the incidents occurred. I have never seen this happen when the weather is cooler (60-70F degrees in my room).
I also think this only happens if I am using the PC lightly (nothing intensive) like watching fullscreen videos (video overlay), surfing the Web, etc. I don't see any errors or evidences that it happens when idled (e.g., asleep or out). Uptime doesn't seem to matter since I have seen days to 3.5 hours.
I tried upgrading network driver twice (e.g., Realtek_XP_5714_0219 from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false ...), disabling Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1.5 (XP's disabled already), releasing and renewing IP address (works, but still no network -- can't even ping my router!), unplugging and replugging the cat5 cable (do see the network port lights on), touching the network jack and hardware inside and outside of the case (not hot), trying another cat5 cable and a network port on a switch instead router's), changing from "Minimal Power Management" to full power (no underclocking/slowing down when idled), etc.
    During the disconnections, I tried:

I also noticed the disconnections usually start with red X icon in my taskbar with its bubble and then later the long disconnection even though no red X (1 GB and connected). If I were to disconnect the cat5 cable from NIC, then it wouldn't even detect it is missing the cable!
The only way to fix this was to reboot (best way and last longer) OR disable network connection and re-enable it (Windows XP's Network Connections) or the NIC itself (Device Manager), but that doesn't always last long (maybe a minute). Example of my pings right after disabling and re-enabling NIC:
    C:\>ping 192.168.0.1 -t
Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Force your NIC to run at 100Mbps full duplex and see how it goes.
Check your router / switch ports as well as cables.
I will try 100 Mbps if it happens again. So far, it hasn't occurred after installing the driver supplied by MSI's Web site and not RealTek's Web site. The room temperatures even got warmer like 83F degrees.
As for router and switch, what am I checking for? Other computers didn't have any problems. As for cat5 cables, I already tried another one like I said in my original post.

Doesn't really sound like a virus.

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Macbook won't read disks!

my macbook won't read disks, it justs ejects it immediately after insertion.  It's a software based issue because I have my hard drive partitioned with linux mint, and on the linux os all disks work with no problems.  It might be a red flag but I ran an executable file earlier labeled nocd.  On the other hand though acouple days ago I inserted a disk for an apple tech utility and it just ejected the disk immediately as well which was the first time this happened, but i didnt think anything of it because I assumed the utility just wasn't compatible with my computer.  I work at a help desk for a university so i thought maybe because it was not a university owned computer, I don't know, i'm not sure what my logic was there. but reguardless what i've tried was to kill backround processes involved with disk mounting and letting them respawn, there don't seem to be any unusual processes running on my system over all, after I killed those processes my home directory couldn't be located, I'm not sure if what I killed had anything to do with it, and don't really believe it did.  I know the superdrive is not dirty or anything of that sort seeing as it read the disk fine in linuxmint.  Any suggestion?  thanks in advance for any replies

  • Macbook acting wierd even after fresh install of OS

i've got a 13" macbook i've had for a couple of years. i've had no problems with it until about a month ago when it started acting weird. it was becoming very slow and crashed regularly when i tried to run simple applications like itunes or safari. even when i tried to shut it down, it sometimes gave me that message on the screen where it informes you to hold down the power button to shut down.
i decided to do a complete re-install of my osx to give it a fresh start. so having re-installed leopard, and with nothing on my hard drive apart from the pro tools and cubase programs i've re-installed (it won't be these as they're both legit programs that i've been using on this mac for 2 years), it still seems to crash and not shut down properly.
i've actually done another clean re-install a couple of days ago to see if this made a difference, but sti ll the same problems.
i was under the impression that any viruses or bugs that we're making my mac act weird would have been wiped when i done a fresh install of my os.
can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong?
    thanks

    It's not a virus.
The screen you see (that requests you to restart your computer) is referred to as a kernel panic; these are often hardware-related.
What you're describing sounds like a possible hard drive failure.
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? Is your computer still under warranty?
Get your data backed up, if you haven't already, just in case!

  • IBook G3 acts weird

Hello, I'm new around here and I would like to ask some questions.
I don't know why, but my iBook starts to act weird lately. When I put it in sleep mode and then reopen it later, it froze. It has been like this for a few days. Then yesterday, when I was doing surfing on the internet, everythign was lagging and then my laptop froze. So I shut it down but when I start it up, it takes a long time before it gets to the desktop and there's some piercing noise all the long.
Can someone tells me what happens to my iBook and how to fix this?

    Pendragon:
Welcome to Apple Discussions. Hope you won't be new for long. It is a good place for Mac users to visit.
Your computer probably needs a spot of maintenance. I would begin by booting from the install disk holding down the "C" key. Go to the installer menu and open Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the let panel and First Aid in the main panel. click on Repair Disk. If DU reports errors, Repair again and again until DU reports no errors. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
The next thing I would do is to run Unix Maintenance (CRON cleaning) using a utility like MacJanitor or Onyx.
Here is a link to Gulliver's article on OS X Maintenance which I have found very helpful: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640&#607640
    Good luck.

  • How can I erase hard disk if SuperDrive is broken (OS 10.6.8)?

I have an old MacBook running OS 10.6.8 which I want to recycle, but its internal SuperDrive doesn't work, so I can't use the install disk to do it.  I tried plugging in Apple's external USB SuperDrive which I bought when I upgraded to a MacBook Pro which has no internal SuperDrive, but the external SuperDrive doesn't accept the disc; it's as if the old MacBook doesn't recognize the external drive.  I'm thus at a loss as to how to proceed to wipe the hard disk.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

The newer version Apple USB Superdrive does not support use with older Mac products
that have a built-in optical drive; so that avenue is not a direct method. Other brands of
relatively inexpensive DVD+CD R/W USB drives can be used with system DVDs to boot
most later Intel-based Macs using the Apple DVD system media discs.
There also has been topic discussions in various locations online about methods to
use a firmware change to newer Apple USB Superdrive, that may work with older Macs
that have built-in optical drives, those which may have failed to function.
The change to the USB external Apple superdrive may void its warranty. I noticed a repair
page at iFixit.com showing how to swap the actual drive out of the Superdrive, and in the
added comments, someone had posted a suggested (but not recommended) method of
modifying the Apple USB Superdrive's ability to work with older unsupported Macs.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_USB_SuperDrive (4 comment/questions, not definitive)
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/23023/Can+I+use+the+AirSuperDrive+as+an+Exte rnal+Drive+the+Mac+laptops
So perhaps the idea may work, or it may not. Other less costly third-party somewhat
more disposable DVD RW USB player/recorders that can work & boot Macs have
been discussed in the ASC discussions. Several brands, a few links to online sites
that had them listed. Usually for under $50.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Imovie HD acting weird; won't show finished movie in the big screen

My Imovie HD has started acting totally weird. First off, it wouldn't show finished movie projects in the large viewing screen. Then there were clips that no longer showed up. Sometimes I can hear the sound of a clip, but not see it. I tried compressing a project in quicktime to publish it on the Web and I got an error. Then the imovie started acting weird. Now when I open it, it just closes on its own.
I've run disk utility and no problems were found. I also tried Tech Tool. And I couldn't find the plist file for imovie at all to delete it. I've also emptied the cache files. HELP!

There is probably an app. malfunction. You should have a certified Apple salesman look at it. Other than that, i am not sure what to do.
