Macbook advice/help

Ok. Right now im using a Sony Vaio. Its a nice computer but it has very short battery life and has a few problems that I just cant stand. I am able to but a new computer and need to know from current macbook users if the macbook is the right option for me.
So, im going to tell you what I use my Sony Vaio for and please let me know on your opinions. I am currently looking at the macbook that is the step below the black one so... here goes:
Right now, I currently use my laptop for:
MSN
Internet Browsing
Listening to music while doing EVERYTHING
Taking it with me everywhere
Playing World of Warcraft (my current laptop can play it at maximum settings very well and I am curious as to what kind of performance the macbook gives for this game)
Typing
Connecting to the internet wirelessly
and I have a Logitech MX518 gaming Mouse that I absolutely love, however it has about a bajillion buttons on it and one of the things I disliked about the macs is the one button mouse. Is it possible and not hard to use a two button mouse in the sort of way I use it on Windows?
Also, if I was multitasking (running MSN/itunes/World of Warcraft) how would the computer with a gig of ram operate? Will it have problems switching between programs? Can I switch between WoW and MSN with any sort of ease? Or will this slow my computer down to unbearable speeds?
thank you in advance for help/opinons/advice
Windows XP
Windows XP

Hi eric -
Hope I can answer a few questions...
MSN - it's def. not the same experience - Mac's MSN client is about 4 years behind Windows ...no video OR audio. There are a few 'make-shift' IM clients that simulate MSN for the Mac but they don't measure up in my opinion. I've installed Windows XP on a separate partition (yes, you can run your Macbook as a full blown PC) because it allows me to install MSN Messenger Live natively ...with audio/video/winks/games etc. so I can keep in touch with those Windows people out of province. There are however GREAT! IM clients for mac - Adium and iChat are the obvious.
Internet browsing is effortless - Safari is Apple's version of IE however most people use a Mozilla build such as Firefox or Camino for a better web experience.
itunes on a Mac ...well, it won't get any better than that.
It is portable so yes, you can take it anywhere.
For WoW ...see this post and this forum
Typing ...I like the keyboard - however I think most people are 50/50 about it.
Wireless internet is no problem.
Most mouse's will work to varying degrees - it's best to check with the maker for OS X compatibility.
Having just given you the PC-Mac breakdown on the points you mentioned, keep in mind there are MANY more things about the Mac that you can't really experience/understand until you actually get into the system for yourself. Mac's native applications work seamlessly with one another, the System is more user friendly and the book itself has options that you won't find in the Windows world.
The nice thing for a PC switcher is of course Apples Bootcamp ...it lets you run your Macbook as a Windows XP laptop - and at the switch of a startup disc your back into Mac OS X.

  • Okay I use iPhoto 6 on an older mac and don't want to upgrade past 10.4.11. Can I upgrade iPhoto without the newer operating system? For the life of me I can't get iPhoto to recognize my camera reliably - although it does sometimes. Any advice, help?

The latest version of iPhoto which can operation with OS X 10.4.11 is iPhoto 7 which is part of iLife 08.  You might be able to find a copy of iLIfe 08 on Amazon.com or Ebay.com.
iLife 08's full system requirements are:
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor
iMovie ’08 requires a Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0 GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9 GHz or faster)
iDVD ’08 requires 733MHz or faster processor
512 MB of RAM; 1 GB recommended; high-definition video requires at least 1 GB of RAM
3 GB of available disk space

  • OLD MacBook - need help!  Clueless

I have an old MacBook - I believe it is a 2008.  It still works great, except I believe I need to upgrade my operating system.  All of the websites I keep going on are telling me that they don't support the browser I'm using (Safari 5.0?).  When I try to update the browser, it says my operating system needs to be upgraded... and I cannot figure out how to do that.  I tried to install Google Chrome after that and it said it was not compatible with this version of MAC OS X.
I don't need Google Chrome necessarily, just want to be able to update the operating system and browser on this MacBook.  Help!
Current Info: Mac OS X version 10.5.8.
I've gone under "Software Update" on the apple menu and it says there are no updates at this time... clearly there are!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Trying to avoid a trip to the Apple store.  Thank you so much!

OK I'm doing this again since someone flagged my post but only the second one was erroneous.
The first one was to send you to Apple's site:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Where a download of Snow Leopard will cost you $19.99. (Is that ok?)
Your MacBook (2008?) can run Snow Leopard 10.6  and 10.7 for sure. The last version in that year will run 10.8.

  • My husband and I both have Macbook pros, can we both back up to the same TC?  I have noticed a bunch of his files on my computer and I am not sure how they got there other than from the TC, Suggestions or advice helpful.

I am new at posting here also, so pls forgive me in advance.  My husband and I have been backing up our Macbook Pros to the same Time Capsule, should we not be doing this?  If we should not, what would you recommend?  I recently got the message that my drive was almost full and so I started to delete misc items from my downloads folder and I found a bunch of my husbands records that got downloaded to my Macbook, could this be because we both backed up to the TC?  If it is not, do you have any ideas what may have caused this?  THX

Horrible idea, youre building a 2X tragedy ready to bite BOTH of you.
Its bad enough for one person to do that, but 2X for two people to do same.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
    Data redundancy begins at...
    1. All data on the computer is just that, your data.
    2. All data on the first external HD is your backup.
    3. Only the second external HD is your first safe data redundancy.
Protected data redundancy begins at the second external copy due to:
    1. It not being connected. Any drive connected, backup or otherwise, is not to be considered a safe data redundancy.
    2. Being the backup failsafe to the first external HD, not to the data on the computer which never should be counted in terms of data protection as "a copy".
    3. External drives will invariably fail, and since most people falsely believe their external HD is their "safety", this error of perspective must be countered by yet another external copy of ones data.
Ones vital data must always be considered wholly independent and irrelevant of any data on the computer itself. Failure to look at one data in this matter is a failure which often can and does culminate in data loss.

  • Wine spill on macbook pro help/advice?

Basically on Monday morning i woke up and went to go on my macbook pro 13"
I opened it and there was white wine on the screen and on the keyboard, I was shocked since i didnt remember spilling anything on it so im not sure how much i spilt or how much went into the inside of the computer. The macbook wouldnt turn on and when plugged to charge (was only plugged in to check itt wasnt working) showed no sign of power and the green light wasnt on.
I've been reading online and most things told me to just leave it to dry for a couple days which I have been doing, I wouldve taken it to a repair centre or apple but there are no free spaces for an apple appointment till next monday, so ill probably go then
Out of curiosity I plugged the charger in today on friday night to see if it'd light up having been left to dry and stuff for 5 days and it did light up and the fan started to sspin a little bit. I quickly unplugged it & I didnt turn it on in fear of inflicting more damage to it since ive read it'd accelerate damage to the components & apparently the heat could caramelise the remaining white wine? I think the computer is in sleep mode? Assuming i heard the fans starting to spin & whir, What do you guys recommend I do? Leave it or check whether it works? Or should I make sure its turned off and unscrew the back and check if the logic board or anything else has been damaged?

Yeah  I know :/ lol I tried going to the apple shop on tuesday but one of the women their said they were busy and I'd have to make an appointment online and I asked if I could make one now but she said it has to be online which is really annoying tbh
Anyway ive been checking online & there is no spaces available :/ like how long am i supposed to wait its so stupid tbh
If the repairs are costly I'll have to get a chromebook for the time being until I save for an imac how annoying im so stupid

  • Adapter problems for late 2009 Macbook - Please help!

I have a late 2009 white Macbook that I want to hook to an older TV. I bought the mini-dvi to s-video adapter on advice on the apple support people. The adapter showed up and the mini-dvi plug is much bigger than the dvi plug on my macbook. I did the live chat (live in North Dakota, not a lot of genius bars around here...) and the guy ran my serial number and insisted this was the correct adapter- several times. I'm not crazy! The thing doesn't fit.
Can someone please help me figure this out?

Check out this list. The 2009 MacBook is not compatible with that adapter if I am reading the table correctly.

  • Airport no longer works with my MacBooks. Help an old lady get wireless again!

First, I have to tell you that I'm as dense as granite when it comes to technology, so please talk to me in the simple terms you'd use with a dazed higher primate. Assume that I know nothing.
My story: I have the world's oldest MacBook Pro and am also using a new MacBook Air. I had a new Airport base station that was working fine with the MacBook Pro until I moved two years ago. I know nothing was dropped or mishandled, because I moved the electronics myself. But when I set up stuff in the new house, with Airport in a spare room and using the laptop in my bedroom where I have little room for anything but me, the MacBook would no longer recogize the Airport.
I tried moving Airport into the same room, thinking there might be something wierd with the walls of the house, but still no dice.
So I've been wired to the Comcast modem ever since. I trip over cables so often, I can do it in the dark.
Things are getting complicated now, because I've added a printer/scanner. Since I can't use it wirelessly and don't wish to trip over the cable every time I stand up, I hardly ever use the thing. Also, I'm shopping for a new TV and have dreams of being able to connect it with the Mac for watching movies, etc. The thought of using more cables makes me sad.
BTW, I'm currently using a borrowed MacBook Air, circa 6 months ago. It doesn't recognize Airport either. Airport is currently sitting in its box, bored and depressed.
Since nothing I own is under warranty any longer, I'm looking for free advice here instead of paying Apple by the hour.
    Two questions:
    (1) the ****? How do I get wireless again?
    (2) Is Airport interchangeable with other wireless modems, like the one Comcast offers me?

When you connect your MacBook Pro to the Comcast modem using its Ethernet cable, you are establishing the same sort of connection with it that would be used by your AirPort sitting in the box. The modem does not care what is connected to it, but it can connect to only one device at a time. Most of them "remember" that device as long as it is powered up, and will refuse to communicate with anything else.
So the first thing to do is power down the modem. Unplug it. Then, connect your AirPort's WAN port to it (Extreme or Express, whichever one you have) and then power them both up. With any luck your MacBook Pro might just connect wirelessly like it used to in your last home.
If it does not, you probably need to reconfigure the AirPort Base Station again as if it were new. To do that, "hard reset" the AirPort Base Station by pressing its tiny reset button and holding it depressed long enough for its LED to flash rapidly. Then, the LED will glow solid amber for a moment or two, then it will begin to flash slowly. When that occurs select its network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu. Its name will be "Apple Network nnnnnn" where nnnnnn = a code unique to your base station. Select it.
Then, launch AirPort Utility - it is in your Utilities folder - and it will detect that your AirPort base station has been reset. Click the Continue button, answer the questions, and it will reconfigure the AirPort to those settings. The questions should be self-explanatory. When you are finished you will be prompted to restart the AirPort.
The next step confuses people, because after restarting the AirPort Base Station the network name that you had been using to configure it immediately ceases to exist. AirPort Utility may as well just sit there forever so just quit AirPort Utility. You have to manually select the network you just created by selecting it in the Wi-Fi menu again.
If you run into problems and need more help, meaning you must communicate using the Internet again, just remember the first paragraph - power down the modem whenever you change what is connected to it. Make it a habit.

  • IPhoto library is a behemoth on my MacBook pro -- help this Mac Grandma out

Don't laugh at me ( if you do, be really quiet about it!)
Here's the deal: Out of fear of losing photos, I have made a monster out of my iphoto library. It now takes up 34GB of space on my MacBook Pro. There are duplicates in there and well, it's a mess. (I have ghost images of some photos, for example).
I want to start fresh but not lose photos and data and album names. I have copied the iPhoto Library folder to DVD. I have run the backup program with iLife (to 300GB LaCie Extreme). I have even copied the iPhoto Library folder to the LaCie three times and each time renamed with the date (e.g. iPhoto Library 9/15/07; iPhoto Library 11/13/07, etc. ). Now I have so many duplicates, I don't trust the way I've used backup, and to top it all off - I have little to no space on my MacBook Pro. It's as slow as a my old Powerbook 180 running three programs at once.
    1. How do I free up the space on my MBP and yet still work on current photos in iPhoto on it and adding to my iPhoto Library without carrying around every picture (and then some) I have ever taken on my laptop. Should I start from scratch with a whole new library? Then how do I work with old photos from the older iPhoto library.
    2. What's the best way to back it up.
    3. Would iLife '08 help or would that complicate matters?
    4. Any advice on duplicates? How to I find duplicate photos, delete them, but make sure I have not lost the image and data?
Any help would be appreciated before my MBP with 1.99 GB left crashes.
Help this grandma out! I love Macs but I don't use them properly. Happy Holidays! Mrs. P.

    Mrs. P
You've got a nice project to keep you busy over the xmas!
    1. You MUST first make space on the disk - you're in immediate danger of a very serious OS crash if you don't. The fastest way to do this is to move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Switching from a PC to a Macbook please help!

I have never owned a Mac but I'm very interested in switching to either a Macbook Pro or an air, I was kind of hoping some of you current mac owners could help me out?
Currently I'm using an Acer Aspire 5740-6491 which is a great laptop IMO except the batter isn't impressive and it's a pain to travel with.
I mainly use my computer for basic stuff, I'm not a gamer so my usage consists of: browsing the web, MS Office, Skype, downloading music, and watching some netflix/videos.
Here are a few questions I have that hopefully you can help me out with and also please feel free to chime in about which one would be the better fit for me (air or pro).
    1) Pro has a built in disc drive while air doesnt. Pardon my ignorance but how would I install programs (for example MS Office) on an air?
    2) What is the deal with the app store? Is it similar to the iphone store where some apps are free others are to be purchased?
    3) What can you tell me about OS updates? What do they typically cost? I am accustomed to how MS updates windows every few years where I have to wait forever and a day for the new OS to download and pay a hefty price. Is there a difference in the pricing and installation experience between the two?
Any advice would be great. I've done some homework and it looks like the Air has a better display that the Pro (from a glare standpoint) but the Pro has more power and a better HD webcam built in which is a plus since I skype often so I'm on the fence. I look forward to reading some feedback, thanks in advance!

    1) Most software is now available for download from its developer's or online vendors' web sites. For software that has to be installed from discs, there's an accessory external drive for the Air.
    2) Yes, very similar.
    3) Major Mac OS X upgrades have cost $29.95 recently (Snow Leopard 10.6 and Lion 10.7). Minor updates are free. You need a fast internet connection for the upgrades. Starting with Lion, the Mac OS cannot be obtained on a disc, though a USB flash drive installer is available for $70, and you can easily make your own DVD or flash drive installer for future use after you've downloaded it once.

  • Which Macbook Pro  - Help !!

    Hi,
I currently have a G5 Powermac (dual 2.7 with 8GB RAM), outputting via a GeForce 6800 Ultra to 2 x 24" monitors via DVI.  It is used predominantly for music (Logic) and Video (Final Cut).
I am considering 'upgrading' to a Macbook Pro but have a couple of questions first...
Is the Macbook Pro going to be noticably faster and quieter than my trusty G5?
Can the Macbook Pro ouput to my 2 monitors?  (The monitors have VGA, DVI and HDMI connections if this offers options.)
To clarify, I don't want to use the Macbook's display as one of my screens - I want to use my dual monitor system already in place.
    Sadly, I can't afford a Mac Pro
    Thanks.

Look at the evidence, Shootist...you were hardly overy-helpful or supportive.
Saying "Time to start saving for a Mac Pro" when I'd already posted that I couldn't afford one was plain idiotic.  Then, to mention iMacs was even worse, since I'd made it abundantly clear that I wanted to use my existing screens.
Your Thunderbolt/USB combination comment is outdated and, had you done a Google search, you'd know that desktop extending IS possible at 1080p.
Then, you were plain rude, with "I'm sorry what did you not understand about my above post..."
I thought I responded very politely, and am still doing so.  Maybe you should reconsider some of your contributions.  If it's not helpful or accurately informative...don't bother.  Just saying "no" is not much use to anyone.  You should offer reasons or alternatives with positive and negatives attached. Manners cost nothing.
Do you really think I haven't searched Google already?  I came here for some more specialist help/advice and to maybe learn from others who've encountered similar requirements and have overcome the issue to a satisfactory outcome.
Since no-one else has contributed, I will assume there are no satisfactory tried/tested solutions.
I am amazed that this hasn't been tried, though...

Still, anyone else's comments would be more than welcomed.

  • MacBook Buying Help

Ok, I currently have use my Mom's dell and have been using it since Decemer when my 4 year old Alienware desktop broke. I will be going away to college in September and am set on buying a MacBook. I will only use this MacBook for about a year and then give it to my mom and buy a MacBook with Merom and hopefully a discrete video card. I have a few questions however.
I am set on the Black 2.0 ghz Macbook but I was wondering if I should upgrade the Harddrive to 100gb from 80gb. How much room does OS X take up and how much do room do you guys think I need. Also I would be able to go to Apple Store to buy it if I go stock and can also return it if it is faulty.
Ram wise I will be getting 512 from Apple. But I want to upgrade to 2gb immediately and I was thinking about going Crucial but I have heard that I can get it somewhere else for cheaper but I would rather get better quality and pay more. Could anyone enlighten me about these retailers.
I will be purchasing Apple Care as well.
Finally, I am thinking of holding off my purchase until later in the summer for 2 reasons: I have heard that Apple has a back to school sale and could someone enlighten me further about that. The second reason is that maybe some of the problems such as heat and noises can be ironed out if I order it later(if anyone has a MacBook could they please tell me about these problems I have heard of). Do you think they will be upgraded at all by September because I am a little hesitant about integrated graphics. But, I also want to get OS X ASAP.
    Thanks for your time,
    Julian

It's hard to give you accurate, helpful advice without knowing what you plan to use your MacBook for.
If you plan on using the iLife apps, for videos/pictures/music/etc, more HD space is a plus. But, I think 80GB will be fine. My previous 3-1/2 year old PC came standard with 114GB of HD space, and I used about 10GB. I'm pretty conservative, plus I really don't have a reason to hog up all my HD space (although with this brand new iMac, I'm finding reasons). So, I honestly think that 80GB will be enough. But, if you want to be sure/plan to use this thing to the max, 100GB wouldn't be a waste of money.
As far as memory goes... Purchase your desired 2 gigs from Other World Computing. They offer cheap, guaranteed compatible RAM for any Mac; you actually choose which Mac you have, and they list compatible memory modules. I purchased a gig from them at $141 with shipping. Compared to Apple's rates, that's a steal.
If you're not desperate for your own Mac right now, waiting a bit longer to give Apple some time to sort out initial issues isn't a bad idea, but I doubt you'll be disappointed if you purchase a MacBook now. Concerning the integrated/poor graphics support... Eh, yeah... If you plan on gaming, don't buy a MacBook, really; it'd be a waste of money. It comes with an non-upgradeable 64MB of shared RAM, and a grade D Intel GPU.
Other than the graphics support, the MacBook is a solid machine. If you really want OS X, buy it now. If you can afford to wait, it couldn't hurt, but it's not going to provide that much better results.
    Enjoy your MB!
