Macbook Air 11.6 - glass overlay?
Hi all, I have a rather newbish question. I recently bought a Air 11.6 (latest model) and I was a bit surprised when I happened to touch the screen to wipe a way a spec of lint, the screen was quite soft and reacted to my touch. Much like a bare LCD screen would!
When I was in the store looking at them, I never thought to touch the screen to check for glass. Maybe this is common or obvious, but is this normal? Shouldn't there be a layer of glass, much like my Macbook Pro 13?
It's normal. To make devices thinner, the glass is no longer a separate layer, but is integrated into the screen assembly.

Spilled a glass of water on my Macbook Air
I Just spilled a glass of water on my MacBook Air. I immidiately turned off the power and tried to dry it off. While drying I twice lightly tapped the power button trying to clean the spill. I didnt want to turn it on again. Anyways I dont plan on turning it on again anytime soon. What should i do? Do I have to get it repaired? If so, how do i do that. I need detailed instructions.
Take it to an Apple Store at once, unplug it, don't turn it on again.

My wife spilled a gas of wine on her MacBook Air . Now it's completely dead, and doesn't even show it's being charged.... Any advice is welcome .
Liquids and electricity don't mix. Any hope of surviving a spill is based on immediately turning the device off, getting it as dry as possible, and then letting it have a lengthy drying period. Some people recommend putting it in rice to absorb moisture though I think that has its own danger. At this point your only solution is to take it to an Apple repair center and see what it will cost to replace the logic board - and to hope that was the only damage.
Sorry I couldn't provide better news. Check your home owners policy to see if this is covered (and if it is worth using). I have a specific rider on my policy for electronic equipment which includes full replacement value with no deductible. -
Macbook Air, cleaning screen. Are Dust-Off Monitor Wipes safe to use?
Are Dust-Off Monitor Wipes safe to use on the screen of a MacBook Air?
Hello Otto,
Here's the official response from Apple:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3226
When I worked at the Apple Store we used iKlear every night to wipe down displays on all the floor models as well as any machine in for service. The cleaning solution was never sprayed directly onto the display or any part of the machine, only into the microfiber cloth and then a gentle wipe down of the targeted area. The application of cleaning solution was minimal as well to the cloth to avoid the potential for causing any sort of harm or damage to the product.
Because the MacBook Air doesn't have the glass overlay like the 13" or 15" MacBook Pro I'd recommend being gentle when wiping the screen at all times as you're directly applying pressure to LCD panel. I'd also avoid things like Windex or "glass cleaner." I see no reason why the Dust-Off Monitor Wipes would not be acceptable, there's no chemical components on the materials list that jump out at me as being potentially hazardous to damaging the panel. -
ArchLinux Installation disk doesn't recognize Macbook Air SSD[SOLVED]
I want to install ArchLinux on my new MacBook Air (dual boot), I made a dd of the installation iso to a usb disk. The usb disk can boot and run, but it cannot recognize the hard drive(SSD) of Macbook air.
There are three disk files in dev: /dev/sda /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb
/dev/sda is the usb disk, /dev/sdb cannot be opened by parted and cannnot be mounted (it reports "no medium found") and I believe it is the sd card reader.
What can I do?

WIFI Packet Loss/Jitter MacBook Air 11 & LION OSX 10.7.1
I started using computers more than 30 years ago when I was 5, I had my first IBM PC at the age of 10 and have never had any interest in paying over the odds for an Apple mac mainly because I saw the Mac as a kind of "Can't open nothing", one mouse buttoned retard of the computer world.
That is, until now.
I set up an online business 3 years ago and rented a dedicated server and set the whole business up in a cloud, so to speak. Having done that, all I needed a laptop for was a remote desktop connection and to run a SIP phone (Internet phone).
My PC based laptops had almost nothing installed on them, and I wasn't using software on the laptop itself, I was using remote desktop, so - why not try a MAC? The new Macbook Air 11 is small, light and made of metal and glass so should be robust enough to travel with me.
I have to say, this was the worst move I've ever made.
I opened the new shiny macbook and the first thing I noticed was that the internet seemed hit and miss. Moving around the room I managed to find a spot whereby pages woud load quickly. Strange, my £200 acer laptop was sh.t fast everywhere in the house. No matter, I packed it back away and carried on working on the Windows machine.
I've come to Newquay this week, and i've started to try and use the Macbook again in a hotel. The wireless signal in the room is low, and speedtest shows about 1 meg down and 3/4 meg up. That may sound bad to you, but remote desktop uses about 5k/sec (modem dial up speed) and the softphone, well, my Asterisk VOIP setup is confugured to use the GSM codec so that's 8k/sec each way + overheads.
This whole setup was deliberately designed to be "thin" so I can travel with ease and work on bad connections like USB internet sticks.
Anyhow, the Macbook was unable to hold a stable connection to the remote desktop or SIP phone, even though the speed test showed a whopping 1 meg up and down. What you may not be aware of is that there is more to a connection than the speed, there is the quality as well. How many packets are lost / how much "jitter" is on the line.
Anyhow, we're not living in the 3rd world, I ran a PINGTEST and it showed a small amount of jitter but told me the line was class B, online games may suffer but voip should be fine.
I unpacked the Acer, placed it in exactly the same spot as the Apple had sat in and it worked beautifully with 1 bar of wireless signal, all day long. Phone calls were clear.
So you know now what I'm thinking. I'm sitting here with my £200 acer because I can't use the £1500 macbook air 11. I paid nearly sixteen hundred pounds for this piece of .... and it doesn't ...... work. Time to contact Apple support.
2nd Mistake!
Representitive 1: - Told me that I can't compare the Macbook Air to the Acer, the Acer has Google Chrome and everybody knows Google Chrome is the fastest browser. I was told there was nothing more he could do, its probably a bad line at the hotel. When I explained the Acer works fine for voip I was told well, maybe it is getting a better signal. I explained the Acer has the cheapest possible parts inside it and paid 1500 for this macbook, expecting it to have quality parts inside and was told I'd paid for the size, because its so small but its not considered "powerful". Apple do you train your staff? Clearly not.
Thank god I wasn't paying to talk to this moron.
Representitive 2: - Had no idea what packet loss or Jitter was, got me to do a speedtest and said that looks fine. Then he got me to remove the WIFI adapter and re add it in the network settings.
Guess what, nothing changed, its still the same hardware and software.
Representitive 3: - Still not really understanding "quality" issues with the networking interface, I was asked to install the latest Java client. I did it, only because I wanted to comply with Apples wishes so they'd help me, but they weren't helping and Java has nothing to do with the network adapter, so that was useless advice too.
Apple seem to have no idea there is a problem, even though Google has pages and pages of people saying the same as me, and their own discussion forums have thousands of people complaining https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2664670?start=0&tstart=0
Finally, late yesterday whilst speaking to d.ck head number 3 at Apple support, we found a forum post talking about a fix, 10.7.1 update. I told d. head number 3 about the update and he suggested I applied it. So I did and everything looked great, for a whole evening.
This morning, I switched on again and the same thing, slow remote desktop, choppy unusable phone. Remember the phone needs less than 20k for a conversation, thats 0.2 meg. Speedtest again showing a whole meg both ways.
I called apple support again, this time being a little forceful, and I've asked for this to be escalated, but the bottom line is - they have no fix, they don't aknowledge this as a problem and I was told LION is new, so maybe it's got a bug..
I told the guy on the phone this is a network driver issue, the intermittency of the problem shows that and the Apple's lack of settings for the network adapter means the unit is autonegotiating with the router and choosing speed and duplex settings on its own. Sometimes it does that correctly, other times not and the connection although fast has a lot of noise / packet loss / corruption.
I've found a workaround, you put the unit to sleep and wake it up again and it runs fast until the next shutdown. Not really acceptable seeing as I was paying for "the cream of the crop".
I will definately not be recommending Apple products, and i'll certainly not be replacing the Windows laptops in my business with Apple's toytown system- i'd go out of business if I had to rely on this.
All there is left now, is to look at Boot camp and see if I can wipe this waste of space linux hack from the unit and install Windows 7.I started using computers more than 30 years ago when I was 5, I had my first IBM PC at the age of 10 and have never had any interest in paying over the odds for an Apple mac mainly because I saw the Mac as a kind of "Can't open nothing", one mouse buttoned retard of the computer world.

Does anyone know when Macbook Airs had matte screens?
I own a mid-2011 13" Macbook Air. I purchased this computer through th Apple website and went through all of the customization options maxing out whatever was available to me. At the time, there was the option to choose a matte or a glossy screen (this is not offered now - just glossy). I chose matte because I had heard about eye strain stories and was uninterested in a glossy screen, especially one just created with a coating (not glass). I have used my computer ever since and it definitely had a matte, anti-glare screen. Nothing like the glossy screens that are offered now. I recently had the screen replaced due to some problems, but they replaced it with a glossy screen. The Apple store is now insisting that it is impossible I ever had a matte screen, as it was never offered, and that I am just making this up, or too stupid to know what screen I was using for 2.5 years, or that it's actually the same screen and I just think it's glossy now because it's "new". I am extremely upset that I'll have to be using a glossy screen now, but more upset at the way Apple has treated me over this.
I wanted to see if anyone else has a non-glossy Macbook Air screen (not a screen protector/anti-glare filter cover thing) or knows anyone who does. My screen did not have the sharp reflections that it does now, I saw it next to a glass screen every day that I used it and the difference was striking. I could sometimes get the purplish not-sharp reflections that did not impede viewing, but nothing like it has now. If anyone else had/has a screen on their macbook air that was anti-glare/matte, please let me know. I know that the Apple Support page for this model of computer states it is only offered in glossy (then, and now).From
MacBook Air - Wikipedia
and
MacBook Air Tech Specs
it does not appear that MacBook Air has ever had a matte screen.
Maybe the nature of the glossy screen has changed since 2011? -
Spilled water on MacBook Air - safe to use after a week?
Last Friday I spilled a glass of water all over my MacBook Air's keyboard. I jumped up, tipped the laptop over to get as much water off as possible, and dried off the outside. I took it in to Apple immediately and was told it needed so many repairs, that it would cost more than the laptop itself. The guy who looked at my Air was able to turn it on, but the monitor was flickering and had horizontal lines. He took it apart and said the motherboard was fine, but I would need a new logic board, speakers, screen, etc. and said I should be able to get my files off onto an external hard drive. Since it was such a costly repair that I couldn't go for, I didn't get a list of everything that had to be replaced.
When I got it home, I wasn't able to power it on like he could. I let it sit on my dresser all week, open and upside down, to let it dry and allow any extra water to drip out the front. Tired of looking at it, tonight I decided to try one more time and turn it on, and it did! I was able to email myself some important files that I thought I would never see again, so programs and internet worked. The monitor seemed completely fine, the brightness goes up and down normally, the speakers work, and I didn't notice any problems with the keyboard.
It seems to be completely fine, but I'm a bit worried about whether or not it's safe to use, and if there's anything I should be looking out for. At the Apple store I was told that it needed so much, but maybe it's fine for now? If I am able to use it, should I be thinking about replacing it anyway? I'll be wanting to use it next fall for school. Sorry for the huge wall of text, I thought it would be best to know as much as possible.
Thanks.That's great news. I'm not a computer guy but I am very experienced in automotive. The way I see it is even when you took it in and they cleaned it there is no way to get all the water out if it's really bad. The water will cause shorts and all kind of thing will malfunction. Now that the water is dried I would take it in and get it retested. You see, the first test they did on it was not accurate because of the water (causing it to short). Now you can get a good test. Who knows, it might be just fine. I remember drying cars for weeks at a time. One thing to have them look for is any corrosion that might had formed. My guess (only a guess) is that if it's working good now you got really lucky and it will be fine.

Macbook air 2014 wine spill, back to life
Hello
I'm not sure if anyone would have any experience of this, but in July, after 8 weeks of owning my macbook air, it was in the firing line after I knocked a glass of wine over. Only a very small amount went on the mac, however by the time I'd got the carpet under control my Mac was off and not showing any signs of life. (yes i am an idiot)
I took it to a storefront retailer who took it off to look over it and was advised that it needed a new motherboard and keyboard to the sum of around £900, naturally I couldn't afford this after only just splashing out on the laptop.
Flash forward 4 months and I get my mac out of its box where it's been since being sent back and I go to list in on eBay for spares. I plug it in while i'm taking pictures in case of a miracle, and low and behold it starts charging, then springs to life with all my data still intact. It appears to have charged fine and is holding the charge well, the backlit keyboard and all the keys work fine and it survived in sleep mode over night......it simply is working like it should and doesn't feel sticky and not a whiff of red wine.
Does anyone have experience of this? I'm thinking that the store didn't take a decent amount of time to look over it and it was send off the day after the incident so was not fully dry and wrote it off based on my description of what happened, likely?Not entirely sure what the quality of the wine has to do with the justification for repairing the machine but I suppose everyone goes about repairing things differently.
First Question: Do you have renter's or homeowner's insurance that covers damage to personal technology? If so, give them a call to see what (if anything) is covered, the deductible, etc. For example, I have a rider for personal electronics that in the event of loss, damage or theft I'm covered for the replacement cost of my machine and a very small out of pocket coverage.
Second Question: Did you use a major credit card to purchase the machine? Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express? Some of them, based on the type of card offer additional options for replacement or repair coverage. It takes a 5 minutes to call and find out and it may save you some out of pocket money.
Third Question: How old is the machine? If it's a newer machine it's cheaper to fix it then replace it, if it's an older machine and based on how old it may potentially be a wash (value vs. cost of replacement).
In the event that you decide to fix it, Apple can fix it (out of warranty) but it'll run several hundred dollars (something like $700 or so USD) but you can't replace a MacBook Air for that price in the form of buying a new one. As AA suggested, selling it for scrap parts is also an option but you're looking at a couple of hundred bucks in your pocket, at best. -
HELP! my new macbook air won't do software updates
I have no idea how to set up my new macbook air but I read somewhere about migration assistant and transferred over applications from my old macbook with this but ever since I can't do any software updates. The updates download but during installation I get a message - 'none of the selected updates could be done, and unexpected error has occurred'. Thanks for any help!!
thanks, I've found it and here is the last download - I deleted any repeated lines but there doesn't seem to be many!!

How fragile is the Macbook Air
This is a rather silly question... If my cat likes sitting on top of my closed macbook air do you think it can handle that kind of weight/ pressure? It just seems so fragile. Thanks!
I had my 2010 13 on a book on the table. It slid off and the back part of the lid hit a lamp base just about in the center and broke the screen. A new screen is 699 because apple will only allow the entire lid to be replaced. Since I first had it I noticed the one week spot is the center of the lid on the back. It can be pushed in surprisingly far. Just happened to be the spot I hit.
Yes, its my fault clearly, but I am really dissapointed that it costs so much to repair and that spot can be pushed in so far. I've always been very worried about simply putting it in my computer bag. I am considering going to the eleven which feels stonger, or jumping ship. If Techrestore would finally offer a anti glare screen replacement I would go for that. Especially if it had no glass. These screens seem too fragile for an ultraportable. An ultraportable needs to be tough, not fragile. Thin glass and a top that can be flexed easily in is a recipe for disaster. Add to that a screen which no one can replace, and I suggest you think twice before buying the computer. It is not that tough I believe. -
How do i remove a macbook air case that i put on backwards?
i put on a case that i ordered off of ebay and somehow managed to put the top of the case on backwards. I've tried a credit card and my fingernails and none them are working. so i don't know what to do now and I'm afraid I'm going to break my new macbook air.
Without seeing it, I would not suggest anything. As a suggestion, why not take it in to an Apple store and see if they will help. They should know if removing it would stress the glass.

What is apple doing about numb fingers using the trackpad on the new mid 2012 macbook air?
What is apple doing with the trackpads on the mid 2012 MacBook Air, that creates numbness and pain in my fingers.
You have no idea what you are talking about catperson. This topic happens to be on one of the
Apple Support Cummunity conversation. It's called,
Hands go Numb, tingle from trackpad-
Do you even have a 2012 or newer laptop? If not, don't give advise as simple as go see a doctor. Will Apple be paying for my medical bills?
Yesterday is the first time my finger got so painful I could no longer work on my project. I iced it to help numb the numbness, usally the pain subsides when I stay off my laptop for hours however when I start working on it the pain returns and you need your index and middle finger to work that laptop. This is the first time the pain had not gone away, 24 hours later. It feeIs like the tip of my middle finger has a giant splinter in it, very sore! I bought the first edition Macbook Air laptop 4 years ago and never had this problem with my index and middle finger, until I started working on my new Air.
Look at how many people are having the same problem. It can not be a coencidence. This problem has cost me the use of my finger and the high expense for this new MacBook Air. I'm going to my apple store tomorrow and show them how many people have this problem with numbness. I think this problem goes way beyond giving me a refund for this computer.
Any thoughts after reading other people having the same painful experience?
So What is Apple going to do with the new MacBook Air trackpad that creates numbness in your fingers?
PS: I know the trackpad is made of glass, so I covered my trackpad with a clear cover they sell to put on iphones however that did not slove anything. -
Hi guys, just purchased a macbook air, was going to get the macbook pro as i won't really be taking it out the house much, not really a high flying businessmen kinda guy, just work as a scaffolder lol.
Reason I bought the Air was it suited my needs perfectly, all I do is browse the web, and watch video. Don't really play games on it, and don't really use it as a music machine (My 27" Imac fills that role) now my only concern is as the title says, the screen quality on the display.
Now I am not savvy in the tech world, but from what I could tell when I was comparing the two with the apple guys (Their stores are very helpful) the only thing I noticed that caught my eye was the screen quality and brightness on the macbook pro. The screen looked alot brighter, and the images looked more crisp, I know the macbook pro has glass protection covering the screen, but is the display it self different to the Mac book airs?
Its not a deal braker for me, I love my macbook air 13" (I bought the top of the line model) its extremely quick, it looks the part and its extremely light for when I do want to either take it upstairs or vice veser or take it in the backgarden on a nice hot summers day, but I just feel a bit gutted that it didn't look as bright as the macbook pro considering that I was debating over the two.
Whats up with it then guys? Is it just my eyes, or are the screens actually different, and also with it not being protected by glass should i be worried about damaging the screen? Iv noticed when I got to clean it with a soft cloth, the screen ripples, makes me a bit on edge about damaging it : P
Thanks guys.This is the worst the MacBook has to show from being dropped on to a concrete floor from my table.
Trust me it is very strong, least thing you need to worry about -
Complaint on Macbook Air Repair - To whom this may concern
Complaint on Macbook Air Repair - To whom this may concern
I would like to file a complaint through this community regarding my encounter with the Apple Hardware Repair Service in HongKong involving both Apple Technical Support in Hong Kong (Tel: 2112 0099) andAuthorized Service Provider - Wah Fung Computer Services Limited.
For background information, I had purchased my Macbook Air 11" (Late2010) at the end of October 2010 in Hong Kong (with valid purchase receiptstill with me). The machine to this date is still under the standard one yearwarranty. I am one of the first to pre-order this machine when it was firstannounced back in late 2010 and waited for the pre-order to arrive for 3 weeks.So you can see how much desire and hope I had on this machine.
Just about 1 and a half week ago, the MBA screen failed. About 50% of thescreen turned bright white, while the rest of the screen is still displaying.It just happened overnight with shutting down the MBA, closing the lid and thescreen failed the next day when being turned on. At this point, I must stress that the condition of my MBA is as follow:
- No scratch, no cracks and no dent on the monitor lid and the rest of theMBA body;
- No scratch, no cracks and no dent on the monitor glass;
- No scratch, no cracks and no dent on the inner surface, i.e. keyboard;
- No visual damage or any sort;
- No dropping or no sign of any impact suffered; (Again no cracks ordented surface);
- No water damage;
Unfortunately, when I bring this failed machine to Wah Fung Computer ServicesLimited (Authorized Service Provider in Hong Kong) for carry out repair worksthat is covered by warranty, Wah Fung had informed me that they considered themachine had suffered "physical damage" and whether the machine isconsidered under warranty is out of their jurisdiction. Hence they advised meto contact "Apple Technical Support Hotline of Hong Kong - Tel: 21120099" to explain to the representative regarding my case for their followup. Despite disappointment on the Authorized Service Provider, who had notproactively follow up on my case and instead "kick" the responsibilityball to the Apple Technical Support Team, I nevertheless had gone through thetrouble to contact them to explain my case. The first time I contacted Apple Technical Support is on July 18, 2011, I explained my case and the representative informed me that she will get back to my by Wednesday (July 20).
On July 21, the same representative called me back, again informing methat the machine had suffered “physical damage", which had not seen or comeinto contact with my MBA. I again need to explain to her that my MBA had notsuffered any scratch, cracks or dent or even any sign of physical damage. Therepresentative then transfer my line to "Customer Care and RelationsRepresentative", which basically throughout our whole conversation had continuouslyto repeat the phase " physical damage" without offering any customercare at all. This Customer Care Representative, who again had not seen or comeinto contact with my MBA, had informed me that the Technical Engineers in UShad made the "final" judgment that my MBA had suffered "physicaldamage". And so how did the US Technical Engineers came to this"final" judgment?? The Customer Care Representative told me that thisjudgment was made from by looking at "PHOTOS" given to them by thestaff in Wah Fung Computer Services Limited (Authorized Service Provider inHong Kong). So again the US Technical Engineers, who had not seen or come intocontact with my MBA, had came up to the "final" judgment that my MBAhad suffered physical damage and then telling me to pay $6300 HK dollars(approx. 808 US dollars) to repair the monitor while a new 11"inch 64GBMBA is costing $7688 HKD ($999 USD) The Customer Care Representative cannotexplain or proof to me the cause of the physical damage, according to her, thisis because all the people and engineers, who most of them had not even physicalseen, examine the MBA had said that it is cause by physical damage.
To be honest, if I had crashed, hit, hammered, or accidental dropped orimpacted, water damaged my MBA in any sort of way or if the warranty had beenexpired, I am willing to accept it as physical damage and pay this money to getmy MBA repaired or consider other option to get a new one. However, without anyphysical or visible damage (or any damage mentioned above) of any kind, andwith the MBA still under warranty, but I am still being accused of implyingphysical damage on the machine without any evidence and need to pay huge sumsof money for its repair, then I am really disappointed with Apple's service andthe so called "warranty". Every hardware product can basically haveno warranty, because every failure as defined by Apple can be"physical damage" that may occur without any impact, scratch, dent orcracks, no matter it is hardrisk or motherboard, whatsoever; even it may havemanufacture defects or latent defects. So what’s good with the warranty andApple care plan??
I hereby summaries my points as follow:
1) No physical damage on the machine, no scratch, no cracks and no dentetc;
2) The people and technicians who refuse to repair my MBA and decline itsvalid warranty for repair service, calling this as the "final judgment", had NOT physical seen orexamined my MBA and so called "final judgment" are made by photos;
3) No proof on the machine had suffered physical damage, why it is not manufacturerdefects??;
4) Authorized Service Provider and Apple Technical Support Hotline bothkicking the ball to each other on the repair service
I sincerely seek the community attention on this matter as it had beenfustrating communicates with the Authorized Service Provider and AppleTechnical Support Hotline in Hong Kong. I hope Apple can look into the situation, examine the machine to realize that it had not suffered any damage and offer me the repair service which I am entitled to under warranty.
