Macbook Air 11" shuts down after few minutes running

My Macbook Air 11" from mid 2012 shuts down after few minutes running, it is a laptop with very light use. The first time this happen was trying to upgrade to OS X Mavericks, after this I read it was maybe an overheating and definitely the case was hot, after this I placed the computer right in front the AC to finish the upgrade, finally I successfully upgrade the OS but the problem continue. I bring my Mac to service and now they said it is a Video Card problem, it doesn't make to much sense for me. Can somebody let me know if this could be a Video Card problem?

At what point is the shutdown occuring? As soon as you launch the install app?
If so, I would trash the install app file, and re-download it.
First, you might try running a Repair Permissions & a Verify Disk from the Recovery Partition. It is always a good idea to do this before any major software update/upgrade.

  • What's wrong with my macbook? It shuts down after 1 minute!

Last night I updated my macbook with something, didn't see what it was, but it required a restart, so I did that. After that, when I was using my macbook it froze all the time, so I tried restarting it a couple of times, but the freezing kept getting worse. I couldn't use it because it froze even before I could click on anything. Then I tried rebooting it in safe mode, but it took ages (I know it is supposed to) so I shut it off before it was finished. Now I can't start my macbook!! I can turn it on and the sound and the apple logo is there, but after 1 minute it shuts down. I don't know what to do! I don't have a backup harddisk (I know it's stupid) and I have some really important stuff on there, so I really don't want to loose everything. Is there some way I can save everything?? Please help, I'm lost!  The macbook is 4 years old, it's a White one.

If Disk Utility isn't able to repair your drive it may be a lost cause. You can try a more robust repair tool, I'd recommend DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/ If that won't do it I'd say you've just learned about backups the hard way. Since you can boot into the recovery partition your hard drive isn't dead but your boot partition has become corrupt.

  • Satellite P10-554 shuts down after few minutes and I can not reboot

    hello,
i hope anybody can help me with my satellite P10-554
when i start the notebook everything works fine a few minutes. than the monitor turns into black and the notebooks shuts down suddenly. i cannot reboot it, when i push the start-button nothing happens.
i have to wait for about an hour and then i can start it up again, but he works just a minute and shuts down again !
help me please, cause i need my notebook to work !

I did that many times. First you need a special torx-screwdriver. Then you can remove the cover over the fans. Than take your vacuum-cleaner and remove the dust. Take a brush or somethin else to remove the dust from the fans. Then, you need to remove I think 2 big screws, now you should hold the cooling falance in your hands, the one with the fans. Clean that properly.
After that you can remove the copper-cooler, with 2 more screws I think, but it is pretty obviously. Now you should see the blank cpu with lots of heat-paste on it. I dont know why they put so much of this stuff on it from toshiba. So get a better one like Arctic-Silver or sth. My advice is to take the CPU off (one screw on top as far as I remember) and clean the surface.
The copper you can clean under water, but dont use sth that could scratch the surface. After that let it dry good. Now just put the CPU back and fix it with the screw again. Take a !litte! heat paste and put it properly with a paper all over the surface of the CPU, but remember, just a little! Then follow all steps back, dont forget to clean the graphics-chip as well and put some paste on it. You can see which it is when you look under the fan-cooling-falance, there should be a rest of heat-paste. Everything back to its place and voil*, a nice, cool clean notebook. By the way, I replaced even the fans.
If you need further advice, just ask!

  • Macbook air cannot shut down after upgrading to yosemite

    Hi all,
I have a problem from my macbook air purchased at 2012 and current version is Yosemite 10.10.
I upgraded my mac to Yosemite in Oct and it starts not able to restart or shut down. I try to update the software as I see in the App Store and I once again not able to restart. The only way I can do is shut down it manually by pressing the Power button and the software is not yet updated despite it restarted again.
Can anyone teach me how to handle this issue? as it is driving me crazy!!!

    Hi beekatt,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below will offer some suggestions if your battery is draining quickly.  Have you tried shutting the computer down to see if you get different results?
OS X Yosemite: If your battery runs out of charge quickly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18599?viewlocale=en_US
If your battery on your portable Mac runs out of charge more quickly than you expected, check your battery’s condition.
Hold down the Option key and click the battery icon  in the menu bar of your Mac.
You will see one of the following conditions:
Normal: The battery is functioning normally.
Replace Soon: The battery is functioning normally but holds less charge than it did when it was new.
Replace Now: The battery is functioning normally but holds significantly less charge than it could when it was new. You can continue to use your battery until you replace it without harming your Mac.
Service Battery: Your battery is not functioning normally, and you should have your Mac serviced.
    Monitor your portable computer’s battery
If your battery won’t charge completely
If your battery’s status is Not Charging
If an X appears on the battery icon in the menu bar
I hope this information helps ....

  • Wifi shuts down after few minutes

When I turn on my computer the wifi connects to the network without a problem.  After 5-10 mins it stops working.  I still have 5 bars showing but no network or internet connection.  If I check preferences it says wifi is off and it won't show any available networks.
I tried using an external antenna but  ha an identical result.
I did upgrade t maverick but can,t tie the problem to the so change since it ran ok for about a week after the upgrade.
Does anyone have any thoughts?  Are there diagnostics that might pinpoint the problem.
    Many thanks
    Andrew

Download the free application iStumbler Beta (don't worry it will work in 10.9) to search wireless network around you and make sure your network is not on the same channel. That will help to midigate wireless crosstalk interference.
Amother hint I have used all these years is built-in. Just go to System preferences->Network pane anf at the top of the Network pane is 'Location'. Use that toggle bar to 'Edit Locations' and box will pop-up and click the + sign to add a custom named Location (like Home, School, work , etc) and don't forget to save all the way out to the main Network panel and there click the 'Apply' button to save the whole new network setup.  Rejoin your wireless network and see if that helps.

  • MacBook OSX 10.5.5 shuts down after 30 minutes of inactivity

If I leave my MacBook unattended, it shuts down after exactly 30 minutes. It asks me if I'm sure I want to Logout. This also happens when I've got iTunes running and listening to music but away from my computer for the 30 minutes. I've tried changing the Sleep options in Energy Saver (System Preferences) but to no avail. Not sure if this was an issue before I downloaded 10.5.5 onto this computer because I've only just begun listening to iTunes through this computer and new speakers and thus been leaving the computer unattended for this length of time. The MacBook is almost 1 year old. I've got it plugged in to power.
I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to prevent this.

Figured it out myself. MacBook wasn't actually shutting down, but rather logging out. Went to System Prefs,; Security; and unchecked logout after _ minutes of inactivity.

    Hello to all Macs
I've got a similar problem with my Mac. Some days now I am experiencing this:
I work on a fully charged battery and suddenly the computer "sleeps". Only one led light on the battery cover flashes. The computer "awakes" only if I connect the power adapter. Then the battery indicator on the right upper corner of the screen shows that the battery has to be charged, and it charges fully in a mater of minutes. This hasn't happen before and I am thinking that the battery may be drained and needs replacement. Any suggestions? I've already done the SMC reset as suggested in the previous message by Lyssa.

  • Mac shuts down after 5 minutes  Help!!!!

My computer: imac G3, DV Special Edition, 500Mhz, 384 mb ram, 80 gig hard drive
This is an odd one...like many others before me the computer just died one day. it would not start up, no sounds, just dead. A few minutes later I tried to turn it on and it came on, but 5 minutes later, it died.
This is the strange part. I took the plug from the socket and waited a few minutes, then pluged the computer back up. It came on. But only for a few mintes and again shut off.
This time I left the plug in the socket, waited a few minutes and tried again. Nothing.
I then took the plug out waited about 30 minutes and it came back on for about 5 minutes and shut down. It only seems to come on if I let the computer sit idle with the plug out.
I have noticed that the computer does not keep time properly.
    What I have done.
    1. I have pressed the Cuda Button, and yes it did start up, but only for about 5 minutes.
    2. I have tried to reinstall the system hardware, but the computer dies before completion.
Should I replace the battery? What else can be done?
    Help!

I have the same problem. I don't have good news, though. I have replaced the battery, pressed the reset button, even replaced the power supply board (not the video board -- which is the only thing I have decided I'm not willing to do). My computer usually shuts down after 5 minutes, but will sometimes stay working fine for a couple of hours. I managed to update the firmware and OS to the very latest, but still it dies. Mine will also occasionally flicker and freeze, which can be restarted by holding down the power button.
I would replace the video board, except the people trying that don't have quite the same problem (theirs don't start up at all), and there is no source I've found that would have new boards, so you would get a bad board, or the same problem eventually. Some people point to a transformer on the video board, but again the symtoms are not quite the same (they smell burt electronics or hear a hissing/crackling sound before it dies.
I have just packed mine away and I'm working on a new G5, but I sure hope the old iMac can be fixed so my kids can use it. I just didn't want you to have to go down the same road just to find nothing helped. Good luck, and if you have any new ideas, I would be glad to hear them.

    Hi Prashun,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You can use these steps to troubleshoot your iPhone if it's powering off unexpectedly:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • My new MacBook Air keeps shutting down the screen while I use it

My new MacBook Air keeps shutting down the screen while I use it and has to be rebooted. I took it in to the Genius desk at my local store, but they couldn't find anything wrong and said that they have never seen this problem before.
I Spoke to the IT support guy at work. He has the same problem with his new MacBook, but not with his older one. He suggested that it is a software issue with all new MacBooks and is connected to the timing of it going into sleep mode. Does anybody have a solution? Apple doesn't seem to have one.

    Try a SMC reset.
