Macbook Air 11" to TV - Resolution Issue

Issue:  my 32" TV (Insignia) does not offer a Display option of 1366 x 768.
I connected my Macbook to the TV with HDMI--the only way to get the Macbook display on the monitor is
at the 1280x768 option (TV).
The image on my Macbook screen is fine, but the image on the TV is unclear--"snowy" -- "sparkles".
There were a few minutes where the image was clear, but sure enough, it went back to the "snowy" image.
Anybody know what the problem is?
P.S. The same HDMI cable works fine with the other computer (13" Macbook); but with the 11" Macbook I get the "snowy" dispay on the TV.
Please help.
Thanks.

Click the "gather windows" button so the System Preferences > Display for the TV will show on your main monitor.  There should be a 1080i choice, try that.

Captfred

  • Macbook air mini dp output resolution / full screen app issues

I've successfully connected my new macbook air 13" to my LED tv with a mini DP to hdmi adapter + hdmi wire. I am able to get video and audio (obviously.)
My issue is that no matter when resolution I try (1080p, 1080i, 720p, etc) and wether I am "mirroring" the display or "extending" the display,
My samsung 46" LED tv can not get full screen there is always black bars on the left and right.
When I connect my PC via VGA wire  there are no bars and it is in full land scape view.
Also I've noticed in lion that full screen apps show up as the "linen wallpaper" on the second display.
the only way i can slightly alleviate the problem is full screening a video within youtube but not within the OS it self... even then there is still black bars which is weird because when i use the TV as a extended monitor the wallpaper is using the whole display just full screen video has black bars.
I am unable to get 1920 x 1200 output display to my HDTV is this possible? is it my mini DP to hdmi adapter that is at fault?
thanks in advanced to whoever helps sorry about the long post my brain is scattered on the issue because my VGA connetion works fine i don't understand why HDMI + mini DP has worse resolution...

No, it doesn't list the resolution explicitly like that - the top few items in the list are "480i", "480p", "720p", "1080i" and "1080p", each with a small TV icon to the right. Non-television resolutions follow, and are listed with explicit pixel dimensions (and no TV icon), but the list stops at 1440x900, the native resolution of the MacBook's built-in display; it doesn't list resolutions higher than that.
Needless to say, I've tried every setting in the entire list, and they all suffer from the same problem of displaying shrunk down on the plasma TV with a margin around the desktop.
I wonder if the difference between your Display control panel and mine is that I'm running Snow Leopard? (Sorry - no screen grabs to show, I'm at work right now)

  • Macbook Air mid-2012 battery life issues -- a possible culprit ?

    Hi all,
I've posted and followed a thread regarding diminished battery life for the mid-2012 MBA, when Mountain Lion was released. I never could fix the problem, was contacted by Apple but that didn't solve anything either.
The troubles I was (and still am) having with my MBA were :
Battery life reduced by at least 33% when I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, following a firmware update.
No change when I clean installed ML.
No change when I upgraded, and then clean installed Mavericks.
My battery, after 13 months of use, had its capacity reduced to 70-80%, and has now been stable for one year at 70-80% capacity. It now lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours, and has never lasted longer than 5 hours since I upgraded to ML, which was a few weeks after the laptop was purchased...
I've tried everything that was posted on the forums, SMC resets, etc. Now to the (maybe) interesting stuff.
I stumbled today on something interesting. I was researching my issue to see if people with the same laptop, that followed the same firmware upgrade path than I did had similar issues. Long story short, a forum post led me to something interesting, located at /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ACPI_SM C_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources
DISCLAIMER Whatever you do, do not try to remove / move anything in this folder.
What is interesting is that my Macbook Air has the following identifier : MacBookAir5,2. However, in the above-mentioned folder, there is no MacBookAir5_2.plist, it stops at 4_2.plist and then goes on to MBP models. Now, the question that I have is could the fact that this plist is missing be related to my battery issues ? In the sense that without this file, the kernel does not know how to properly manage the power, read the battery status / thermal sensors ?
I would really love to fix this 2-year old issue that has been plaguing my laptop ever since I purchased it.
    Cheers,
    Hadrien

Edited to add a screenshot of the plists directory.

I leave my LithiumIon battery plugged in when near an outlet.  But I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month.
Using Coconut battery (download from macupdate.com) you see my battery is just fine after 18 months:

  • Brand New MacBook Air Randomly Resetting (IMO WiFi Issue)

    Good evening,
    My problem is as follows:
I purchased a brand new Macbook Air last week and since the get go have been having issues while transferring large amounts of data over WIFI. The issue is that it seems when there is no activity (I leave the files transferring and have no interaction with the computer) and the files are transferring, some sort of error occurs and creates the system to panic and subsequently reboots.
I have contacted Apple, and they ran me through a few common procedures (Reset SMC, RAM, Disk Repair, etc...). On my own I also ran the Hardware Tool several times and the results was always the same (everything in perfectly working order). I also did a restore in the event that it may be some faulty system file, yet to no avail as the problem persists.
As per my title, I believe it has something to do with WiFi card, as I even disconnected all peripherals (USB Apple Keyboard & My Passport External HDD), yet again and as mentioned above the system continues to reboot without any apparent reason.
Below is a copy of the log, certain information has been changed such as UUID, but everything else is as is.
Could it be a hardware problem? As I am only seeing (as of now) this happen whenever I leave the computer and it is downloading a file.

  • Macbook Air 13" Early 2014 - Display issue

    Having a weird issue with my Macbook Air Early 2014. HDD 256, 4gb 1600mhz, 1.4 Ghz i5, HD 5000 - OSX 10.9.3
Being brief… I have researched and tired SMC etc and think I have explored this problem to a point where I have identified a key factor causing a major display and system issue. The system only works properly when audio is playing through speakers, specifically keyboard, trackpad and screen. If audio is not playing, the screen wlil turn on then off after 3 seconds and 80% of the time the trackpad and keyboard do not work.
However - If I have external device such as aux display, keyboard and mouse It works fine without having to have any type of audio coming from speakers.
So via process of elimination is seems the MB, sorry logic board and components are somehow faulting and know it could be many reasons for this.
If anyone could give some insight into troubleshoot options or things to try, that's be amazing.
To be clear - All software resets inc SMC have been tried and failed. All OS etc is up to date.
Before I have to leave my computer at a genius bar  in the Apple store for days or leave it to get fixed or open it, I want to see my options. I use it for work and run my own small business and can't afford the time or money and having to make do with inconvenience of always being plugged into external screens and controls.
Thanks so much if you read this.

Probably not. Take it in for a free diagnosis and warranty repair.

  • Can I use a USA macbook air in the UK without issue?

    Hello all
I am acutely aware of the customs and taxation issues that occur with buying from abroad, but I wanted to know if there are issues with:
Voltage; US sockets are 120v and UK are 240v. I know the macbook air's tech specs state that they can handle line voltage of 100-240v and a Hertx rate of 50-60Htz, which should make it ok, but not sure...
Software; apart from converting everything into proper english (), will I be limited in the compatability dept (e.g. can I download from UK Mac App store and install UK software without issue), etc.?
Repairs; can I take it to a UK Apple store and will my warranty still be valid?
Thanks, hope you all enjoy your mac as much as me !
    Regards,
    Mohammad Syed

All you need is a suitable adapter to allow the 2 pin power prong or 3-pin cable to plug into a UK outlet. Apple sell an international adapter set (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B?fnode=MTY1NDEwMQ) which, at $39, is really a bit overkill for travel to one location, when a quick search on Amazon for 'UK Travel Adapter' provides a number of options closer to $5.... and which would do the job perfectly well - you can find the same adapters in Amazon's UK store too, so you can get them once you arrive there if you prefer.
Software; apart from converting everything into proper english (), will I be limited in the compatability dept (e.g. can I download from UK Mac App store and install UK software without issue), etc.?
You'll need to create an account in the UK store, but there is nothing to prevent you installing and using UK-sourced software along with already installed US applications.
Repairs; can I take it to a UK Apple store and will my warranty still be valid?
Yes. Apple warranties on laptops are international. Make sure you have proof of purchase with you and you should be good to go.

  • Can MacBook Air (2012) handle 1920x1080 resolution on external display?

    Hi there,
I was currently thinking about buying the following external display:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-E2251VR-inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B0060LCBTG/ref=cm_ cr_pr_product_top
I have read mixed things about connecting macbooks to external displays so wanted to ask the following:
    1. Firstly can the MacBook air 2012 handle an external monitor with resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz?
    2. Secondly, I have heard some Macbooks, with some cables (predominantly HDMI), don't give the option of 1920x1080 when plugged in, instead cap it at around 1600 leaving the external screen blurry. Which connection is best to get the full 1080p resolution, DVI, VGA or HDMI?
Thanks for any help you guys can offer!
    Rob

    Thanks for your responses!
Captfred - I've tried plugging it into my friends screen now using my minidisplay to HDMI cable and the following options show up:
    1080i
    1080p
    720p
    1600x1400
    1440x900
    etc etc
Is the 1080p option 1920x1080? If I choose the 1080p option, the resolution looks nice and has large real estate on there, the only thing is if I full screen it the top and bottom are cut off? Is this a problem with the aspect ratio of the screen do you think?
    Thanks again

  • Macbook AIR 11" Lion frequent restart issue, Macbook AIR 11" Lion frequent restart issue

Has anyone faced this problem with auto restart issue with the Macbook AIR (1.8gz i7 Intel). These few days it keeps restarting stating a hardware problem. I remembered software updated once in China using a 4MBit/sec line once. But it works ok. But when I get back to Kuala Lumpur, it started to have this problem. Reapir permisssion...repair utitlities ueed, even jap RAM etc. did...  So, I tried to call a local reseller has suggested while I downloaded the updates may has been facing with some 'broken chains' for the entired file system in the installer..  (whatever); and ask me to think of some ways to reformat the hardisk and reinstall. as AIR doesn't has a conventional CD install but all using online services, ....problem  it require 27 hours to reinstall the system online. FAS@^$*(@... if it takes a gigabytes of data or so, wondering is this a really wise way to have the AIR supported in this manner .. I guess 90% of the lines are not 1.5mbits /sec. and it SHOULD has been well informed to the buyer first of this potential technical and internet speed requirement -man...
but my problem is, So now, HOW-AH ???

Yeap, NEXT issue, I read some of the honest comment on the battery life which relates to AIR, ... you can chop my head and sit on mine if the AIR battery lasts more than 3 hours !  it doesn't. I bought it because it is lighter than the Mac Book Pro which I also owned, primarily for traveling.  But I never knew it was a technical highlight on a new AIR. Anyway, doesn't matter as I have external cables, as long as it doesn't show the frequent "Your computer requires to restart because of a problem...."

  • My MacBook Air 13" - 2011 has bluetooth issues ?

    BLUETOOTH ISSUES:
    1. BLUETOOTH ALWAYS GET BACK TO "ON" AFTER I RESTARTED. EVENTHOUGH I HAVE TURNED IT OFF BEFORE I RESTARTED MY MACBOOK AIR.
    2. THE OPTION IN THE BLUETOOTH FOR "DISCOVERABLE" IS GREYED. THEREFORE I CANT TICK IT.
    WHY ?

Maybe with this bump an expert will take a look at the crash dump.
In the mean time, a generic solution for such problems is to verify (and if needed repair) the system disk and then reïnstall OS X.  If you need help with these procedures, post back.

  • First Macbook Air Xperience - Wobble and Batt issue

    Hello,
I've already had a post runnin about the wobble/wiggle issue, but now i have my macbook air for a few day's, i have some more experiences wich i wonder if other people also have these.
First , to be clear, its an amazing macbook, really, i think this is the size a laptop should be would you take it all around with you and not make it "to" small so it would give you the same experience as any other computer (apple)
Though, i have some issue, wich i think , shoudnt be , because of the money i paid for my macbook air.
    One :
It seems the macbook air is not always that comfortable with every table. I can get it stable, but really need to seek for that certain spot. As a earlier thread showed you can do some adjusting, i am not sure if i can or want that, (since i am not that handy), but i still wonder if i should bring the apple store a visit about. Not all four feet of the macbook air (the blackcircles on the bottom) are that stable. Most of the time the front left corner levitates a bit.
I am not sure if its a design issue , or that it is normal when meeting the max/min of size and weight. I can imagine that due it's weight the macbook easiers moves/wiggle then my macbook pro.
    Two:
When i get my macbook fully loaded from the adapter (the light is green) and turn it on, boot, login, its already at 97/98%. Thats really quick. 100% is almost imposibble. (the batt. is functional 100% bytheway, no other issues)
    Three:
Most of the time i just close the hood of my macbook when i travel. I've noticed that the macbook air still does a lot of power consumption when it's "sleeping" I think i've i wait a day i lose almost 10 till 15 %
Is this because of the ssd? Does it need more power in sleep mode then a traditional fixed disk?
Ok, that's it, i am really wondering if more people reconize what i have.
    Edgar

    Hi,
    on three:
the memory still gets fed with power if you close the lid. There are Dashboard widgets that allow a deeper sleep, then the battery consumption is less, but waking up takes longer (not as long as reboot, but it is not like the normal awake from sleep).

  • 10.6.7 update for MacBook Air to address iTunes freeze issue

Yes MacBook Air owners, there is an update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1370

It may be an update that is labeled for the 13, but I didn't download it from there. I got my "supplemental update" by clicking on the apple at the top left and selecting "Software Update". The supplemental update appeared, I downloaded it and all is well for now...

  • I have both a PC (work) and my new Macbook Air. I am having issues with opening files that I have saved on my USB Flash Drive. The files are not corrupted because it works on my PC perfectly. Could someone advise how to fix the issue?

    Please help!!!

Yes, I have the MS Office software for MAC that I bought from the Apple Store.
    This is the Error.
    Excel Cannot Open this File.
The file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
    - I created these files on my MAC, but I have worked on it on my PC. But I can't reopen it on my MAC anymore.
    Thanks All for the help.

  • I am running OS X 10.9.1 on a MacBook Air....I had keychain issues that I bumbled my way through - deleted and created a new Keychain....now a box appears pretty regularly, wanting my Keychain login....i enter it and it's accepted and the box disappears.

Help..!!  I'm running OS X 10.9.1 on a MacBook Air.  I had keychain issues with passwords etc and bumbled my way out of it by deleting the current keychain and creating a new one with a new log-in (yes, I wrote it down this time!)  But now these little boxes appear wanting my log-in ie. calendar, Safari, Outlook) and its annoying....entering the login gets rid of the box but what a pain and I know it's not right.....I know I need to enter somekind of automatic logins to these apps but how do I do that....and go easy on me, I'm not computer savvy.

Did you install the latest driver set for the device?  there is a new release on motu.com for mavericks.

  • MacBook Air "11 inch Resolution above 1366x768?

I have a macbook air and my scaled resolution goes up to 1366x768, is it possible to raise it any higher to make it look like airplay with apple tv? (without the apple tv and tv of course)

The amount of pixels on your display is 1366 by 768, you can't increase the resolution beyond that. In order to do so, you would need to physically add pixels to your screen, which you can not do.

  • AE on a 11" Macbook Air

Has anyone run AE CS6 on a 11" Macbook Air?
The 11" MacBook Air has a screen resolution of 1366x768. Is that big enough to run AE?

The system requirements state a screen height of 900 pixels (http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/tech-specs.html), so I'd expect issues. In fact even the installer may refuse to run due to a "display requirements not met" error. Anyway, you won't know till you've tried, I guess...
