Macbook Air 13" Early 2014 - Display issue

Having a weird issue with my Macbook Air Early 2014. HDD 256, 4gb 1600mhz, 1.4 Ghz i5, HD 5000 - OSX 10.9.3
Being brief… I have researched and tired SMC etc and think I have explored this problem to a point where I have identified a key factor causing a major display and system issue. The system only works properly when audio is playing through speakers, specifically keyboard, trackpad and screen. If audio is not playing, the screen wlil turn on then off after 3 seconds and 80% of the time the trackpad and keyboard do not work.
However - If I have external device such as aux display, keyboard and mouse It works fine without having to have any type of audio coming from speakers.
So via process of elimination is seems the MB, sorry logic board and components are somehow faulting and know it could be many reasons for this.
If anyone could give some insight into troubleshoot options or things to try, that's be amazing.
To be clear - All software resets inc SMC have been tried and failed. All OS etc is up to date.
Before I have to leave my computer at a genius bar  in the Apple store for days or leave it to get fixed or open it, I want to see my options. I use it for work and run my own small business and can't afford the time or money and having to make do with inconvenience of always being plugged into external screens and controls.
Thanks so much if you read this.

  • How to charge mid 2011 macbook air battery using Thunderbolt display

While trying to organize all my computer miscellaneous (cords, adapters & so on), I came across an adapter on a little card with the comment, "For use with your Thunderbolt Display and Mac with MagSafe 2 port." Appears to be for charging my mid 2011 MacBook Air via the Thunderbolt Display -- what might be the advantages/disadvantages in doing so? I found the info. in the product manuals to be pretty skimpy about this.
    Thanks,
    Linda

So, I guess the adapter came with the display just in case I had a compatible Mac. I should have noted that on the card. Now, about the rest of the stuff in my Apple mystery box...that's for another day.
Thanks, seb101, for your quick reply!

  • Can I upgrade storage for Macbook air 11" (early 2015)?

Can I upgrade storage for Macbook air 11" (early 2015)?

Sure.  You can purchase a USB drive.

  • Connect 2013 Macbook Air to 30" Cinema Display

Hi, so I bought a DVI to thunderbolt connector and connected my macbook air to my 30" display, but it wont give the 30" monitor the full 2560x1600. Is it even possible to do this or am I stuck at driving it at a terrible resolution?

You need a dual-link DVI adapter such as this one.

  • Am I safe to buy a MacBook Air in early August?

I am thinking about buying a MacBook Air in early August, for school. I have been hearing about the Wi-Fi problems with the new Airs. Do you think the problems will be fixed by the time I get one? I do not want it to be a hardware problem and have them ship new ones after I've bought mine.

  • Macbook air to a thunderbolt display

I have just connected my macbook air to a thunderbolt display, the fan runs continously. Is that normal

The GPU is working harder because it has to manage two displays, and one of them with a big resolution. You should not be worried, more when fans are working correctly.
What you can do is to decrease the Thunderbolt Display resolution in System Preferences > Displays, but note that you will lose image quality

Can new MacBook Air power 2 Thunderbolt displays?

Asked a similar question elsewhere. According to Apple Japan pre-purchase support, the answer is 'No, it doesn't have enough power in the graphics card". Big pity.

  • Macbook Air Early 2014 Display

I was wondering if the Macbook air early 2014 13 inch models have either a 4K display or the ability to play 2160p?

The only Mac which has got a 4K or bigger display is the 5K Retina iMac. However, neither the display nor the GPU of the MacBook Air support such a big display resolution

  • Macbook Pro Early 2011 Display issue

    Hi all,
After reading the replacement program that has been extended to MBP for 15" and 17", is there going to be any news with regards to the 13"?
The reason why I'm asking is that while I'm not sure if mine is an isolated issue or widespread/common occurrence, I have had my logic board replaced last year due to a display issue, and currently still unable to run external display, despite reading up on discussion that is going on.
The symptoms mirror that of the 15"/17", just that the 13" does not have a dedicated GPU.
Hope to get more suggestions/ solutions/ news to potential replacement program from here.
    Thanks all!
    Regards,
    Ziang

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Early 2011 15 and 17-inch MacBooks Pro have had several GPU issues that causes graphic corruption, and it was an issue that showed in most MacBooks Pro. However, this does not apply to the 13-inch MacBook Pro, so I think it is just an issue that has appeared on your Mac but there is not a reason for a replacement program.

  • MacBook Air to iMac Target Display Mode not working

I would like to connect my MacBook Air (13") with my iMac (27") to use the latter as an external display with Target Display Mode.
I followed instructions from a number of posts (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14264), and connected the two with thunderbolt cable and hit Command-F2 -- the iMac goes black and MacBook stays the same. One post suggested dragging windows over to the iMac as an extended display, and I was able to drag Safari totally off-screen, presumably onto the other display, but the iMac still appeared black
Other issue is that hitting Command-F2 again doesn't do anything. I could only get the iMac out of TDM when I unplugged the thunderbolt cord.
I have a brand new Macbook Air and iMac along with new thunderbolt cable (all purchased at Apple Store in 2014). Would appreciate any help, thanks!

    Additional twist to this...
Tried to troubleshoot and reset the System Management Controller (SMC) per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
When I hit Command-F2, one window from my MacBook will display on the iMac (it was Safari a few times, Outlook once), but neither keyboard/mouse can DO anything in that screen. That window also disappears from the MacBook. And I can only return after unplugging thunderbolt (not command-F2).
    Help please

  • MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 Display go Blank

I have set my MacBook Air Energy Saver setting to its default settings...
When its go on standby mode then i click/swipe on trackpad immidiately , Display going blank but keyboard Is working.
And if i wait 10 to 15 sec after standby then there is no issue.
Please Advice me how to fix it

If you take a look at these (very lengthy) threads, you will see this is a widely reported problem, for which Apple have yet to produce a solution.  It is said that they are working on a firmware update that will address it but this has been talked about for a long time and still no update.

The current "solution" (which is not a solution) given by Apple is to set sleep mode to 'never', or to wait a few secconds after sleep before waking the MBA, or install the free App 'Caffeine" which allows you to manually activate sleep and wake.
Some persons have claimed a "bare metal restore" of the operating system resolved the problem but others have tried this without success.

  • MacBook Air: Vertical Stripe in Display

    hi,
my late 2010 macbook air suddenly displays a vertical stripe.
i realise, that when i take a screenshot, that stripe is not present.
i have the latest version of MacOS, no pending updates. i also cleaned the screen with iKlear apple polish - still the same result.
anz ideas what the problem might be?
    ty,
    balazs

Yes, I am using the MBA 2013 with haswel processor. What's your hardware?
Mine is i7 processor , 8gb ram and 256 SSD.
Look, I decided to buy Macs , because it was said that they were working properly for a long long time. After buying the latest iMac 27iches(late 2012) and the new MBA(mid 2013) the thing I have to say is that OS X is full of bugs and of course I am not here to debug Apple's software. The other thing I have to admit is that Macs tend to get hardware damages , especially on their displays, very very very very very very easily.
I got one replacement for an iMac with heavy image persistence and with my second unit I also had a ghosting issue some days ago.
With my MBA I got two replacement , that is the third unit I got and Apple still knows nothing about my issue.
Ok, I decided to pay for a very premium price, at least the machines should really work perfectly. And these facts are admitted by someone , whose house looks like an Apple Store with so many Apple's products that I have bought.
So , the best thing you can  do now is to give your feedback directly to Apple. Apple will not spend time to fix bugs which only a few customers experience. They will only release a fix , if it is a major concern , which may drop their sales worldwidely. Of course, if you think it is a hardware issue the best you can do is to ask for a replacement. I know this is inconvenient, but it is the only way to ensure that the machine you bought will worth the money you spent for it.

  • Random Black Screen Flash Macbook Air and Apple LED display

So I have started to see an issue with the new Macbook Air and my Apple LED 24" display. Randomly only maybe 2-3 times a day the screen will go black and then quickly come right back, like a blink. Anyone else see this behavior? This does not happen with the internal built-in screen on the MBA. Feels like a driver or software issue to me.

    Hi Steve,
I have the same model you've mentioned. Although my issue is not the same, at times when I open my laptop up, I have a black screen, and have to manually power-down. I can tell the keys still work, as I use the brightness buttons and can tell the contrast is getting higher.
Also last night my keyboard/trackpad stopped working, however the power button did bring up the shutdown options but the trackpad still did not work.

  • First Macbook Air Xperience - Wobble and Batt issue

    Hello,
I've already had a post runnin about the wobble/wiggle issue, but now i have my macbook air for a few day's, i have some more experiences wich i wonder if other people also have these.
First , to be clear, its an amazing macbook, really, i think this is the size a laptop should be would you take it all around with you and not make it "to" small so it would give you the same experience as any other computer (apple)
Though, i have some issue, wich i think , shoudnt be , because of the money i paid for my macbook air.
    One :
It seems the macbook air is not always that comfortable with every table. I can get it stable, but really need to seek for that certain spot. As a earlier thread showed you can do some adjusting, i am not sure if i can or want that, (since i am not that handy), but i still wonder if i should bring the apple store a visit about. Not all four feet of the macbook air (the blackcircles on the bottom) are that stable. Most of the time the front left corner levitates a bit.
I am not sure if its a design issue , or that it is normal when meeting the max/min of size and weight. I can imagine that due it's weight the macbook easiers moves/wiggle then my macbook pro.
    Two:
When i get my macbook fully loaded from the adapter (the light is green) and turn it on, boot, login, its already at 97/98%. Thats really quick. 100% is almost imposibble. (the batt. is functional 100% bytheway, no other issues)
    Three:
Most of the time i just close the hood of my macbook when i travel. I've noticed that the macbook air still does a lot of power consumption when it's "sleeping" I think i've i wait a day i lose almost 10 till 15 %
Is this because of the ssd? Does it need more power in sleep mode then a traditional fixed disk?
Ok, that's it, i am really wondering if more people reconize what i have.
    Edgar

    Hi,
    on three:
the memory still gets fed with power if you close the lid. There are Dashboard widgets that allow a deeper sleep, then the battery consumption is less, but waking up takes longer (not as long as reboot, but it is not like the normal awake from sleep).
