Macbook Air 13'' screen flickering

Hi all,
First post on these forums as I've never had any issues with any Apple products.
I bought a 13" MBA back in April with the 8gb RAM upgrade and have since moved to work in the USA. I've been having this issue with the screen for about a week, it's only happened three times and its very intermittent. A 2 inch or so section of the screen just to the right of centre will flicker purple when I lift the lid to the computer, there seems to be no correlation as to when it will happen and it will often og away if I just restart the computer.
This is my issue, sorry for the poor quality of the photo.
I have booked it in at an Apple store in Boston, but I was wondering if anybody knew what was going on and if its a common problem, Google hasn't really helped.
Many thanks,
Dan

Any help with this would be fantastic.

Hi,I'm new here and I think my problem were discussed few times before. However,I tried to follow the solutions similiar to my condition but it does not work.My problem is whenever I plugged in the HP printer (Laserjet M1132 MFP) usb to my Macbook Air,a screen will pop-out and read as 'the disk inserted is not readable by this computer'.I even bought my Mac to the Mac store but the situation remains the same.Okay with other printer but not with my HP.Sigh.The HP printer worked just fine with other computers (not Mac).I'm really sick of it.Please help me.I once plugged in an external hard drive & started Time Machine with it.The printer problem started after that. However, the hard drive plug-in works just fine.
Your attention of above matter is highly appreciated.Thank you.

Here is what worked for me:
I reset the System Management Controller on my MBA.  To do so requires shutting it down, keeping it plugged in to power (I also unplugged both USB connections), and then from a powered off state I simultaneously pressed Shift + Ctl + Option + Power (I did this once and it did not work so I tried again and did it 3 times just to be safe), then released them at once, then I pressed the power button.  Problem solved.

I also tried uninstalling the using the repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility and moved the HP Printer software accessories to the trash (you can search the web for how to do that but that did not solve the problem either).  Neither of these options worked.

Next time you want to put your iMac screen to sleep, try switching off the Magic Mouse, wait for the notification to come up on the screen telling you the Magic Mouse has been disconnected, wait for it to disappear then press the keyboard shortcut to put the screen to sleep. See if that helps and we'll go from there. If that doesn't help, can you just say wether the screen always turns back on the same time every time?
    Hope that helps

  • Does apple care cover macbook air cracked screen

ddoes apple care cover macbook air crack screen

It is very common knowledge and very clearly stated in the AppleCare agreement that AppleCare does not cover damage from accidents, but only manufacturing defects.

  • My macbook air's screen flashes.

my macbook air's screen flashes when I restart it or sometimes when I am using it, and I cannot read those words because it is so fast, could it be something serious?

This is kind of a wild guess..  Check System Preferences > Universal Access > Hearing tab > uncheck "Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs".

  • Macbook air 13 screen flicker

I have a problem with my 2 week old 13inch i7 macbook air. When the the screen powers down and I press a button to wake the computer the screen flickers black and grey and requires me to close the screen to get rid of it. It now flickers constantly - only slightly but it's very annoying. Any ideas? This is my first apple computer and it has been great till now.

Found another forum with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1560774, including another youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaGOKuwqsaw. The severity of the problem in this link looks worse than my problem. Mine is less severe than what's in this video, but more severe that what's in the first youtube link I provided.
The posts in that forum claim: 1) the problem began after upgrading to a newer OS, 2) it occurs after waking from sleep, and 3) that closing the lid for 10 seconds is a work-around fix.
Would be great if Apple fixes this. I won't buy another Mac, desktop or laptop, if they don't. Macs are too expensive to only get 2 years from, and in my opinion thay are not that much better than other options. I'm going to post a bug report on Apple's web site.

  • 2013 MacBook Air black screen of death

My wife's MacBook Air (late 2013) suffered the Black Screen of Death. Looked at the Mac forums for advice, looked at some YouTube videos about changing the battery, was on the verge of ordering a new battery from Amazon. My wife took it to the local Best Buy, and they said they'd be glad to fix it for just $200. Called the nearest Apple Store, got a recording that said I could buy time just to talk to tech support. Finally called Computer World in Appleton, Wis., and talked to Jack. He said it sounded like the latest OSX install wasn't complete. Told me to restart with shift key down, hit right arrow and then the return key, type in the password (even though the screen was still black), hit return again and BINGO! The screen came back on, showed OSX had 2 minutes left to install! All's right with the Mac again thanks to Jack the Mac Guy!

"they said they'd be glad to fix it for just $200.": That's a lot for a simple OS reset...

  • Macbook Air (13") screen question

Does the mid 2013 Macbook Air have any sort of coating on the screen?

    Jon P D
Unfortunately I have not tried to play WoW on this MBA yet, it is realy a pain for my ears to listen to the fan noise from such a thin machine. And I also use iStat menus and temperatures like 98-100 C excite me even more. But as soon as I decide to game a bit - I'll post here ))
    wickedHangover
Thank you very much for a professional advice ! This information is very usefull, because EVERYTIME I rise the question of high temperatures everyone sais "its ok dont worry, its mac, its Apple, so everything should be ok etc". And finaly I do hear about overheat issues. As for me, I ALWAYS use Just-Mobile Cooling Bar if I use the integrated monitor, otherwise I use Twelve South stand - when connected to an external display (both of these cooling pads provide passive cooling).
So if you do not recommend stressing a work machine I will not do it for sure. I'll look for some other gaming solution...maybe iMac... or replace MBA with new thin MBP . . .  Or maybe Apple will intergrate GPU in the upcoming thunderbolt display lol ))))
Otherwise it doesnt make much sence.

  • Macbook Air 13" Screen Crack - Will it break the computer?

Just yesterday I noticed a small crack in the left bottom corner of my Macbook Air 13" (2011). In the last day it has already started to get a bit worse with a small crack that extends a couple vertical and horizontal lines a couple of inches.
My question is, I am about to travel for several months and don't really have time to get it fixed. Can the crack in the screen cause the laptop itself to malfunction? Even if it gets worse, as long as I can still use it I can be patient, but I don't want it to die on me while I am travelling!!!

The damage is likely to remain confined to the display, but the display itself will likely worsen. It could range from just a longer crack, to overall failure of the display.  I've not heard of a cracked display "causing" collateral damage.

  • Macbook air 13" screen goes black while using iTunes

I have an early 2014 13" Macbook Air with a 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. When I'm using iTunes, specifically when I'm watching a movie or TV show, the screen will randomly go black, but not like it turned off. The audio still works, but I can't see the cursor or anything. The only way I've been able to fix it is to completely turn it off (control+command+power) and turn it back on. It happens pretty often though, and as you can imagine, gets quite annoying. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

  • MacBook Air blank screen, no start-up and three beeps - but now fixed?

Hi - My MacBook Air 2011 11in 64GB wouldn't start up for the last three days. It was working fine, then the screen went bonkers and I turned it off by holding down the power button. When I hit the power button again, there was no start-up, the screen stayed black and there were three beeps, short delay, three beeps again. I Googled and it seemed that it was a RAM problem, so I was planning this morning to take the machine to Dr Apple. But just to be sure there was still a problem, I tried starting it one last time and it started up as normal and seems to be working fine now.
Should I still get it checked out? I had been travelling and using it in some pretty hot temperatures when it died, and it's now back at home where it's cooler - could the problem have been something to do with the heat, do you think?
Don't want to use it if I'm making a problem that's there any worse. Much appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Before taking it, run Apple Hardware Test. If your Mac came with an USB drive, insert it and press D key while your Mac is starting. Then, run an extended test and check if it shows a problem.
If your Mac didn't come with an USB drive, press Option and D keys while your Mac is starting and run an extended test. If you see an error message, copy it here

  • MacBook Air Full Screen Display

Why does my MacBook Air not go full screen when the display is set at 1440 x 900?  I have to set the display at 1024 x 640 to get a full screen display.  Thanks.

    Hi forever free,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your issue. Depending on your model of MacBook Air (post-2010), the native fullscreen resolution should be 1440 by 900 (16:10 aspect ratio) for the 13 inch and 1366 by 768 (16:9 aspect ratio) for the 11 inch. • MacBook Air (2008) screen contents on iMac (2011)

I have a MacBook Air from 2008 and I would like to connect it up to my 2011 iMac so that it displays the contents of my MBA on the iMac's screen.
I saw that this is easily achieved with a Thunderbolt cable, but my MBA doesn't have that option: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP501
Is there a way to achieve this please?
    Thanks!

Thanks Niel, I tried that, managed to get it working but for some reason the screen would only show windows off to the right of the screen i.e. out of view, you'd actually have to put the window off the screen to see it on the other Mac, weird?!
Anyway, the fans started to go and it was a little laggy, plus it will cost money after some time, so I decided to go the cable route.
It looks like I have the "Apple Micro-DVI to DVI Adapter" (part: MB203G) which came with my MacBook Air and so I would need a Micro-DVI to Thunderbolt converter like this:

  • MacBook Air 11" Screen melted a hole

My MacBook Air 11" was sitting on my desk at home in standby with the lid closed. Later in the afternoon I opened the lid and there was a real hole burnt into the middle of the display. The first visit to the genius bar was rather unsuccessful. The lady insisted that the display was burnt with a lighter or candle which is def. not the case. I´ve added 2 pic of the screen. Is´t still working. Anybody have this before?

It happened at my home. Nobuddy had access to the MacBook. As I noted above: No lighters or candles near the desk. It´s also a mystery to me. It looks like the heat source comes from the inner layer of the display. The back of the display is unaltered.
