MacBook Air 13 vs Pro 13 vs Pro 15

Hi there,
I am thinking of getting a Mac for college & uni. I was convinced i would need a 15" screen but after a look in the apple store a 13" appears to be big enough for me. For the majority I would be browsing, IM, listening to music, and doing work in pages or MS office for mac however I also would like the ability to convert large videos accurately (not edit, just convert) and I am wondering if the air will be good enough for me. How does the Air compare to the procssing power of the 13" MBP since they are both dual core. ideally, i do not want to spends tons of money on a 15" MBP
thanks
tom

WOW!!   You can probably get lots of opinions on this one.  The big question is what do you want to do with the MAC?  For travel, I don't think you can beat the Macbook Air.  I've go a 13 inch one and it is really great on the road.  However, it is definitely limited for disk space.  It just can't get no bigger.  For me, that is not a problem.  If you don't plan to travel, or carry it around, too much, I'd go with the Pro.
As to splitting the RAM for WIN/OSX, that will depend on how you want to run them.  Bootstrap will let either, but not both, have all the RAM.  I use Virtual Box for a few Windows applications and allocate only a portion of RAM to that.  If Lion needs more, I can always shutdown and restart VB when it's needed.  I have not had to do that.
Bottom line, MBA is a great travel computer.  MBP has more room for oomph.
Good luck

I currently have the 13" macbook air i5 with 8gb. I plan on getting the 8gb for the 13" retina display macbook pro as well

I strongly doubt it. The best thing for you to do is to return this one before the 14 days expire. If the time passes you will have to keep the Air and try to sell it privately.
Once Apple accepts the Air back and you know you are getting a refund you can start the order process for the Pro.

I need to buy Macbook Air with MS W7 Pro. How?

If all you need is Office then you dont need Windows 7 as there is already a version of Office which will run on a Mac. Its called Office 2011.
You can get it from the mac store or anywhere else that sells office

  • How can I back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro Hard Drive using Time Machine?

Want to back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro with a spare hard drive. Sharing allows Time Machine to find the hard drive, but get a drive busy message when time machine tries to back up onto the drive.
    Any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

If you used migration assistant then it probably created a new Login user and placed the migrated files under it.

  • Can the macbook air do everything my pro does?

can the macbook air do everything my pro does?

Yes but slower, depending on how old your pro is. The cpu in the air models are slower then what is in the pro models. Slower cpu mean that everything works slower.

  • How can I move AVCHD files from my MacBook Air to my Mac Pro?

While on the road, I will be putting my AVCHD video on my MacBook Air. This will free up space on the SD card and enable me to export clips to iWeb, etc. But when I get back to my desk, I'll want to put all of that AVCHD content onto my Mac Pro for more thorough editing and long term storage. What is the best way to move the unedited AVCHD files (events) from one computer to the other?

    Jim,
There's a few ways you can do this but here's a method thats simple which also provides you with a backup of the movies contained on your SD card.
Try creating a disk image from your SDHC card from your Cam. You'll need an SD card reader and when you connect to your MBA you can create a .dmg file from disk utility.
Once you've done that you can launch imovie and then double click on your .dmg and imovie will prompt you if you want to add the movies to your library.
When you get back home you can follow the same procedure by copying over your .dmg. No need to export from imovie on your MBA to your MP. The added benefit is that you have a complete backup of your SDHC card in the .dmg which you can backup to DVD.
    Hope this helps.

  • Macbook air migration from mbook pro

hi i currently have 76gb on my hard drive on my macbook pro. when the mb air arrives with 80gb will their be enough room on the Air to do a migration or will i have to delete things off the macbook pro first to do the full migration?
    Thanks
    Rob

i have NOTHING nice to say about migrating from a macbook pro to this thing you call a computer. my client put it best when he called it a "glamorized cellphone." its a lemon people. hang onto your macbook pros, this thing is like totally ********. all i can say is with migrating or "upgrading" from your "old" macbook pro, GOOD LUCK!
the first thing apple said to me yesterday when i was trying to get support for migrating was "*oh, you can use firewire to firewire*" "what, the macbook air doesn't have firewire?" *no kidding*. it took them forever to tell me how to get the ethernet to usb adapter working +(I needed to plug both computers into a router--not so wireless sounding!? nope, and there is no direct computer-to-computer way, apparently, although he did mention usb to usb, the one thing I didn't try)+. wireless transfer was going to take 8 hours for 4 gigs of info , I finally saw that I could migrate using a time machine backup, but even that was ridiculous. His initial user folder was 60 gigs, which wouldn't fit. I would have had to backup his old computer by stripping it down first, which would just be ridiculous. I mean, this is his setup, why is Apple releasing something that is having us have to strip our machines down to the barest of bones. Its 2008, not 2000!
i spent 7 hours trying to migrate my client from his "old" computer. his mail alone filled up half the memory available, and we couldn't fit his photos, his MUSIC, any of that. so he has to lug a hard drive around with him wherever he goes, luckily his firewire glyph porta drives have a usb 2 connection, but we had to order him a powered usb port! he was SO BUMMED he spent as much money as he did to get the one with the super fast (64 gig) harddrive.
at the end of it all we gave up. i think he is going to send his back to apple and keep his macbook. i've set up his computers for 10 years, he always gets the latest. this migration was for all intents and purposes, miserable! she looks great though, and she is a fast machine.

  • Newest MacBook Air and Final Cut Pro X?

I'm in the market for a new laptop for work. I'm a former video editor (still on FCP 7) that's been able to produce 100's of videos on my 2011 MacBook Pro:
    OS 10.7.5,
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024MB Graphics Card
    500 GB 7200 RPM HD
I'm now focused mostly on marketing and light content creation including videos, photos, and some graphic design.
Tools of choice are FCP w/Looks, Compressor (for H.264 exports), Photoshop, After Effects, and Lightroom.
Do y'all know much about the MacBook Air video card (Intel HD Graphics 5000) in reference to handling Canon 5D (RAW to ProRess422) or similar video, After Effects, Compressor and large raw photo files?
What about the Flash drive?  I'm used to having a 7200 RPM hard drive but am guessing the basic MacBook air flash drives are sufficient and maybe faster?
My gut says to go with a MacBook Pro but I'm trying to go light for travel and day-to-day commute and don't anticipate doing any long form edits. The lighter Air is appealing if it can handle my processing needs.
    Thanks for your feedback!

  • Can Macbook air handle Final cut pro?

I have been told Final Cut pro is glichy on macbook Airs, even if they are have newest and best memory and drives. Is this true? anyone

The MacBook Air can run Final Cut Pro X, but its performance is not the same as on a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro.
The MacBook Air contains an Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU, which gives you a poor performance for professional use with Final Cut Pro X. If you need this application, get a 15-inch MacBook Pro or iMac

  • Macbook air 2013 or retina pro 13'' ?

i will study graphic design and i'm thinking to buy a macbook air i7 8gb ram or maybe a retina pro i5. I will need to run the adobe CC all the time (photoshop, illustrator, indesign etc.) and occasionally final cut pro or other video editing software.
    - with either macbooks will i have problems with the applications?
    - is there a big difference between the two? ( i will use an external monitor so i don't really need a retina screen)
    - can a macbook air run this kind of software without overheating or producing a lot of fan noises?
i need portability but without losing a lot of performance.
i'm not interested in a 15'' macbook (retina or not) for both the price and since i will use a better computer at home and i'm not interested in an older macbook.

So I feel like as of right now I’m leaning towards the Macbook Air, but what are the full advantages of getting 8GB RAM. What would I be limited to if I purchase the standard set-up with 4GB of RAM. How much would it cost to add the 8GB of RAM?

  • MacBook Air A1304 and MB Pro A1286 wont boot with the same issue.

I have two A1304 Airs and a MacBook Apro A1286 Mid 2009 with the same problem:
Battery is o.K. and fully loaded.
When I try to start, the fan spins up, screen stays black, no sound, no beep. Sleep LED is lit normally. After a few seconds, Fan stops spinning, LED goes of. After one more second, fans spins up again, LED is lit again but no chime, no picture, no startup.
When I disconnect serveral parts as HDD, output bracket, battery or magsafe, it still does the same.
Any suggestions (besides "new mainboard") . Is this a knwon problem that can be repaired by reparing components on the board?
All three machines seem to be produced in 2009 - may there be any similarity in components that fail now?

I like it very much. I use it on my iPad (and occasionally my iPhone). I'm kind of a keyboard snob actually. I tried the Apple wireless keyboard first. Apple keyboards have a short throw that hurts the tips of my fingers. They're very pretty but the on button turns on when I don't want it to and my iPad wakes up in my bag. Strike 1.
I went to a little keyboard called the Joy and it had a positive switch so I didn't have the wakeup problem. It worked well though after several months I wore it out and had to replace it with another one. I also didn't like how flat it sat and used rubber bumpers on the back. It too had a short throw that hurt my finger tips after a while but it was better than the Apple.
Then I discovered the Logitech bluetooth keyboard, the K811. This is a great keyboard. It switches between multiple targets with one press, it has a positive on/off switch, the keys light up, it's rechargeable and lasts a long time, and the slight cushioning on the keys keeps my fingers from hurting. I put the rubber bumpers on it though like the Joy because I like the keyboard to sit up a little. It's a tiny bit bigger than the other keyboards but I like it a lot, better than my MBA keyboard and better than my iMac wired keyboard. I'm trying out an after market keyboard on the iMac now but I'm thinking about switching to one of these for the iMac.

  • After Migration to new MacBook Air 10.7 Lion, Adobe Pro don't work

Just migrated from MacBook to MacBook Air.  My Adode Pro kept saying it is part of another suite.  After opening the PhotoShop, it will still not work.  I had deactivated CS 5 Suite on the old system and activated it on the Air.

Try a forum for Adobe Acrobat.

  • Copy Mail Rules from Mac Pro to Macbook Air in Mavericks 10.9

    Hi All-
I have a Mac Pro running Mavericks 10.9 and a Macbook Air also running 10.9. I have set up a very detailed set of rules for organizing my incoming email on my Mac Pro that I would also like to use on my Macbook Air.
    Details:
    Mac Pro - Mavericks 10.9
    Macbook Air - Mavericks 10.9
    Application - Apple Mail
Mail setting use IMAP on both machines
iCloud used to sync everything else on both machines
Is there a way to copy the mail rules I have set up on my Mac Pro to my Macbook Air?
    Thanks in advance!

    William-
I checked iCloud "Documents & Data" / Options and I see Preview and iMovie in there but nothing about Mail.
Do step by step instructions exist anywhere? Seems like a handy feature in Mavericks but I can't find a peep about it.
    Thanks!

I still have 1 day to return it.  Currently my best option is to return my air for a full refund and then apply that towards the pro.  However there is a delay on the returned funds.
The credit card I bought the MBA on only has enough credit for one of the macbooks at a time.  However  I need to purchase it on that credit card because it offers me product insurance.
So as of now I have to wait 3-5 days for the credit return and then order the pro which will take an additional week. I'm just trying to find a way to reduce the time between retuning my air to getting the pro. lol.
    Thank you!
