MacBook Air 2012 or MacBook Pro 2012?

Hello to All,
I am new to the Apple universe. I am looking at getting either the updated MacBook Air or MacBook Pro (non-retina display). I was hoping to get some advice on which one would suit my needs better. While I feel that the Air would be sufficient, I notice that when I build my own laptop on Apple's website, I can get a more powerful Pro for around the same price as a souped up Air, so I was wondering if the Pro would be better for the long run. I am looking at the 13 inch Air and 13 inch Pro.
My one worry is that the non-retina Pros will not be supported after a year or two as all the Mac laptops move to retina displays (including the Air), and this is something akin to the last version of the non-retina Pro.
Basically, I will be using the laptop for everyday usage like the internet, email, writing some papers, storing some photos (not a whole bunch. I will backup most photos on an external hard drive), and dowloading apps. I don't play a lot of games, but the ones that I do are not high powered games. I am hoping to have this laptop for 3 to 4 years. The weight of the Pro does not bother me, nor does the hard drive, though I do like the thought of an SSD. I also plan on get VM Fusion or Parallels to run Windows as well, though I don't know what kind of space that will take.
For an Air, is 128gb enough for SSD, or would you recommend a minimum of 256? Is 4gb of memory enough, or would you recommend 8gb for an Air? Or should I just go for an 8 or 16 gb memory Pro?

I'm in almost the exact same situation. I'm starting college this fall and trying to determine which will be best suited for my needs. Currently I'm leaning towards the Macbook Air, the overall idea is very appealing. But I don't want to give something up by doing so. If I go with the MBP I'm planning on upping it to 8gb of RAM and putting the 128 SSD in it. Price wise it will come out about $100 more, but I'll get the benefit of the faster processor and optical drive. Will either of these really enhance my college experience? I'm planning on a degree in Construction Management and will need to have Windows installed. How does the MBA hold up running Autocad on the Windows partition?

I recently bought a haswell series 13" macbook air exactly 1 week before the introduction of the new haswell macbook pros. After considering the spec and price difference I realized I'd rather have the pro. I looked on the returns tab on the website. It said I can return my product within 14 days. Is it possible for me to exchange my air for the pro without having to go through returning my macbook air and buying the pro? I realized the price difference wasn't all that differernt and I wouldn't mind the extra power. I currently have the 13" macbook air i5 with 8gb. I plan on getting the 8gb for the 13" retina display macbook pro as well

I strongly doubt it. The best thing for you to do is to return this one before the 14 days expire. If the time passes you will have to keep the Air and try to sell it privately.
Once Apple accepts the Air back and you know you are getting a refund you can start the order process for the Pro.

it really depends what you are going to be doing, if you are going to be video editing and doing intensive stuff the Macbook Pro.
if you are going to be just browsing the web and doing lite video editing and not that intensive stuff than you should go with the Macbook Air.
Also if you want a cheaper computer than you should get the Macbook Air. By cheap, I mean less expensive.

New MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro?

My crappy HP laptop has officially passed away last night, after being sick for quite a while (RIP). I hate HP and usually get it, only because I'm broke. But I've always admired MacBooks and have gotten used to using Apple (I have an Apple computer at work, I have an iPhone/iPad). Anyway, so now I'm looking to get either a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro. I'm currently debating between the basic 13" MBP and the 13" MBA. They both look delicious. The price looks better for the MBA, but I can throw in a couple hundred if the MBP is more worth it.
Here's some more about me. I'm a recent college graduate. I do A LOT of writing and sometimes PowerPoint presentations, so I'm gonna need to make heavy use of Microsoft Office. I'd also like to do some light graphic design and video editing. I plan to use the basic Apple video editor + Adobe Photoshop and maybe InDesign. I listen to a lot of music and occassionally watch some shows/movies. I kinda take a lot of photos and video so I'll be uploading a lot of those. I do plan to travel with it somewhat, but not all the time. Btw, this will also be my main computer. I want it to last me a while, unlike the HP which is only good for a year then starts having problems. Suggestions?

I currently have a 2 year old 13" MBP with a 256GB Samsung SSD and 8GB of RAM. It has been so long since I've used a DVD or CD that I'm considering removing the optical drive and adding a second hard drive since 256GB is a bit of a squeeze for me. I've always tended to keep my Mac notebooks 24-30 months and then sell them with a bit of AppleCare extended warranty left - which tends to reassure the new owner. It is looking like this notebook has at least another year of life for me - and it is my main computer.
If I were in the market today I'd take a hard look at the MBA mostly due to the long battery life. The trade-off is a computer that's not upgradeable and not being able to add RAM concerns me. I started out with 4GB with this current machine and upgraded it to 8GB after installing Lion. The SSD has made a big difference, but still; with only 4GB of RAM will the Air take me 21/2 years? Since my notebook has become my main machine, while I find the Air tempting, I'd probably go with another MBP since it can accept both hard drive and RAM upgrades.

How can I back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro Hard Drive using Time Machine?

Want to back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro with a spare hard drive. Sharing allows Time Machine to find the hard drive, but get a drive busy message when time machine tries to back up onto the drive.

If you used migration assistant then it probably created a new Login user and placed the migrated files under it.

Pros and cons of the macbook air and the macbook pro

This coming year, my younger daugter will go to high school and need a macbook because she is dyslectic. I want to know which one between the macbook air and the macbook pro will be the best for her. Thanks for your answer.

I was unable to figure out what software package you meant by Antidote. There are several.
Word, of course, is part of MS Office, and they make a Mac OS version. I use Office 2011 daily.
None of these products are likely to tax the hardware of either of the computers you mention at all. The computer will be spending most of its time waiting for your daughter to do something.
Note - my neice just bought a MacBook Air 11". She is entering the University of South Carolina in the fall and is absolutely thrilled with the computer.

Yes but slower, depending on how old your pro is. The cpu in the air models are slower then what is in the pro models. Slower cpu mean that everything works slower.

No, the MacBook Air power adapter is a 45 watt. A MacBook needs at least a 60 watt power adapter although you can use a MacBook Pro 85 watt adapter. You can use a higher wattage adapter without any problems.

I don't think so, because this is not about garageband specificaly, it's about the mac using internal speakers and iphone headset microphone at the same time. Input Microphone via Jack and Output speakers on the laptop.

Did you use the Setup Assistant available at the beginning of the new machine's setup process? Or did you use Migration Assistant later after you had set up the new machine?
If you used Migration Assistant, you generally wind up with two accounts (the new one you set up on the new machine plus the old one you ported over) - that may explain your excessive use of space. In that case, you can either manually combine/remove all unnecessary duplicate files, or you can start over by using Command + R, wiping your drive, and downloading the OS. Once it's downloaded, use the Setup Assistant offered at the beginning of the install/setup process.

The hard drive in the MacBook Air is not meant to be user replaceable. Further, the OS installed on your MacBook would likely not run the MacBook Air.
A better solution might be to use the Migration Assistant to move your data to the new computer. This comes up when you are setting up the new computer for the first time.

Have new MacBook Air and old MacBook. Can send file from Air to MacBook by Bluetooth but cannot transfer file from MacBook to Air.

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.
