Macbook Air 2013 able to run Logic, iMovie and Final cut?
Hey, I am planning on buying a Macbook Air 13" 2013-version.
I want to use it to record music with logic pro, edit my own youtube-videos with iMovie and maybe a little with Final Cut.
Do you think thats possible?
I'm sorry my thread title is so bad. What I meant is "iMovie and Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly when importing 720p MP4 files"
Cheers

FC/e is based upon the Quicktime-engine; so, on 'Export using QT', you'll get all codecs & settings.
but which one..
due to sheer popularity, YouTube became a 'standard' - I'm happy with the convenience, YT and the 'embed'-code offers - excellent quality, automatic adjusted to the watchers connection&hardware.
my export settings are 720p, h264, 6MBit/sec - gives a - imho! - superb quality.
(example of a 'screen-test' from my latest project CLICK )
for creating so-called 'flash video'/.flv, you need 3rd party apps.
Sorenson Squeeze is more of an pro-tool, .. you need some background knowledge to get noticeable 'better' quality.
.. and the question is: are you willing to pay $.$$$ for that 0.x% more quality .. ? does your source offers such a 101% quality, which needs such affords?
if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ... -
IMovie and Final Cut Pro unexpectedly when importing 720p MPEG files
I'm running iMovie/FinalCutPro on Yosemite. Every time I try and import a 720p MP4 with 60FPS both programs quit unexpectedly while generating the thumbnails. The files I am using have run/imported without any problems into Quicktime, VLC, Adobe Premiere and my brother's iMovie on his Macbook Pro machine.
What I have done in no particular order:
1. Cache/preferences cleaning
2. Re-install iMovie
3. Delete all codecs except AIC and AppleMPEG2
4. Install codecs (Perian, divx, xvid)
5. Delete Flash Player
6. Repair permissions
7. Repair hard drive in safe mode
8. Delete iPhoto database, tinker with GarageBand
9. I logged in as a guest user and the problem persists
10. 540p MP4 with 30FPS and that had no problem importing into iMovie
I believe I have isolated the issue to a quicktime engine that is either corrupted or defective that is causing both iMovie and Final Cut Pro to crash. I could use Adobe Premiere or another machine, but I prefer iMovie and would like it to work on my machine. The only solution I can think of is reinstalling the OS, but I really am against that.
Let me know if you have any other ideas. Please see the Problem Report below:

Flip mino or flip ultra HD to use in imovie and final cut express
i am contemplating either flip mino HD, Flip ultra HD or creative vado HD. Which one has a good video quality and design style? Is it necessary for 2 hrs movie or actually i like the flip mino coz its slimmer but only takes 1 hr video. By the way, What kind of format the flip camcorder will save as coz someone says its .avi but some says Mp4 format? If in Mp4 format, is the quality still good? most of the time i will shoot in ultra hi definition setting. I will use imovie and final cut for edit and does the Flip compatible to imovie and Final cut? How about creative vado? any recommendation?
But most likely i will get the flip. The Flip cameras are easy to use and pocketable.
Unfortunately it is their very simplicity that drastically limits what they can do.
They are OK for someone who wants to take daft pictures of their friends and post them on YouTube but for serious film-making they are non-starters.
They record low quality highly compressed video onto an internal memory. When you have shot your 60 minutes of video you can’t use the camera any more until you get it to a computer and download it.
The lens is a small aperture fixed focus with no zoom.
Actually to be correct there is a 2x digital zoom, but as we all know, digital zooms are a total waste of time and only reduce the quality still further. You can get the same effect by enlarging your picture 2x in the computer - not to be recommended.
So what at first sight, to the uninitiated looks like a very cheap camera, quickly turns out to be a very expensive toy.
Much better to buy a proper camera (which won't cost all that much more) like Skalicki suggests. -
What are the similarities and differences between iMovie and Final Cut Pro
I have become semi-proficient in iMovie and considering upgrading to Final Cut Pro. I would love to hear from anyone with informatoin pertaining to the learning curve, and the similarities & differences between iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

if you're familiar with iMovie-b, the GUI looks familiar, although tons of new buttons and sliders and knobs to play with ...
There're zillion of features, you probably don't need in the beginning - what gave my projects the most 'boost' is Color Grading/manipulation

I recently installed older version of Imovie and final cut pro free trial now imovie 11 wont open what do I do?
Do you mean that the old version of iMovie (which version?) worked until you installed the FCP trial?
Note that you can only transfer projects from the latest version of iMovie (10) to FCP 10.1

hi
i have i movie hd, and final cut express2. i have not been able to find a way to capture in final cut, but is it possible to capture in imovie, compress it to a quicktime file through "share" in the file menu, then edit it in final cut?Yes, it is.
But you must be careful about some points:
- this approach has 2 disadvantages: 1st you lose the timecodes (FCE does record them, iMovie does not); 2nd you have to render audio in FCE, because FCE file format is different from iMovie exported files.
Either or both points may be relevant or not to you, depending on your editing style and project requirements.
- from iMovie you must export to QuickTime Full Quality, and NOT compress the movie, to avoid quality losses.
I suggest you to read this thread about: Capturing in iMovie vs FCE
Then: why are not able to capture in FCE: missing instructions, or errors of some kind ? This is the best way to go, if you can make it work.

Is the Macbook Air 2011 able to run the Apple Cinema Display 30" ?
Hello Everyone.
So, I am about to buy a Macbook Air 2011 11".
I want this product because of the ssd driver and the versality of such a light object.
The things is that i work at school with a laptop, and when i come back home, i use my Apple Cinema Display on my Macbook Pro with the Dual Link dvi Adaptator (which cost me 98€ ouch !! ).
So i read that there were kind of retro-compatibility between Thunderbolt and Mini-Display Port on the new Mba.
Is the 2011 mba able to run my external display ?
Thank you.
Nicolas.Yes.

Still: Macbook Air 2013 Wifi Issues On Wake-Up (And Partial Solution)
I just got my new MBA 13" Mid 2013 last week (updated to Mavericks), and have been having issues with the wifi for a couple days now. Specifically, when I wake my MBA in the morning, it will have disconnected from my home wifi and will not reconnect again. It can see the wifi (and it did ask the WPA2 password after I deleted the network in preferences), but it will not connect due to a "Connection timeout".
I didn't have these issues with my old MBP 13' Early 2011 (also running Mavericks). Also, this only started after I had fully set up my MBA and replaced my MBP, that is, connected it to the external display, hard drive, etc.
Now, it turns out what I have to do is disconnect my external hard drive and reconnect to the network. What kind of architecture makes something like this even possible? And it's not just me, https://discussions.apple.com/message/23423481#23423481 had the same problem: needing to remove a USB device in order to be able to reconnect to his wifi.
This reminds me that with my old MBP, I had an issue where copying large data volumes to external drives via USB would render the wifi connection unusable. So apparently there is something about Macbook architecture that links USB and wifi.
But why does this only occur after a full night of the MBA sleeping? I guess it would have to drop the wifi for energy saving, which it doesn't do right away whenever it goes to sleep?
In any way, this is extremely frustrating. What is the deal with USB and wifi in Macbooks? I really hope Apple can fix this via a software solution, but to be honest, I don't trust them to anymore. I guess for them this is "working as intended".
Cheers
Nate
PS: Please, do not post any links to "troubleshooting steps I may find helpful". I do not, because they were not.It turns out the MBA doesn't even have to go to sleep for this to happen.
Today i received a new HDD for my time machine backups, so some data transfer was necessary. I made a 600GB backup from my Mac and an external hdd I use for media files, then i started copying another 500 Gb from one external drive to another (USB to USB).
Now in the middle of this transfer (which is rather slow to begin with at around 46 MB/s) my wifi connection just went out. My iPhone, iPad and Windows PC can still connect to my router, but the Mac tells me to "move closer" to it.
It's interesting that my Mac can no longer see any other wifis besides my own, so I guess it's wifi range is somehow impeded by these USB transfers? How does that even work?
At around 50% the data transfer had come to a complete halt, so I interrupted the process. Two seconds after I had ejected AND unplugged both external drives, the MBA could "see again". All visible wifis were listed again and I could connect without problem.
Is there anyone with a similar experience? Is this a hardware defect or an architectural problem? Why have I had these USB/wifi-issues on two Macbook models spaced lmost three years apart? -
Installing and Using Logic Studio and Final Cut Studio 2 On the Same iMac
In March of this year, I switched from being a long-time user of PC's to a 24 in. 2.4 GHZ iMac. In late May I purchased Final Cut Studio 2 and Aperture and have greatly enjoyed using both of these applications on my iMac. Both run with no problems under Leopard which I installed shortly after it came out. I am now considering the purchase of Logic Studio since I have enjoyed midi sequencing and audio editing for years on my PC's but wish now to do this on my iMac.
I note that two of the applications included in Logic Studio (Soundtrack Pro 2 and Compressor 3) are a part of the Final Cut Studio 2 suite of programs that I already have installed on my iMac. How will Logic Studio handle this issue when I run the install of that software, i.e. will it be aware that I already have Soundtrack Pro 2 and Compressor 3 and just have those install options grayed out or will it overwrite my FCS2 installation of those two applications? Are there other issues or conflicts between Aperture or Final Cut Studio 2 applications and Logic Studio that I should know before installing Logic Studio?
Thank you very much in advance for responding, and I look forward to reading this forum from this point onward.
TomThanks again for your prompt responses, blayzay. I look forward to getting and installing Logic Studio. If anyone has any precautions on using it with FCS2 or with Leopard, please add a comment to this thread.

Which Mac Pro to buy for Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro X?
Hi, I'm considering to buy a Mac Pro for my personal studio. I have 2 choices in my mind: 1st one is the "Quad-core (one 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) with 6GB RAM", and the 2nd one is "12-core (Two 2.4GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon) with 12GB RAM". I'll be mainly using Logic Pro 9 and hardcore video editing in Final Cut Pro X. I know the fact that having higher GHz than more cores may benefit you at some point, and only those software applications that are well-written for using multiple cores will be able to utilize the power of 12-core. So, I need to know that are Logic and FCPX are such apps? Are they able to utilize the power of 12-cores or a Quad-core with more GHz will be better? I'm looking for fast operation and smoother workflow, and I'll also be using this computer for a very long time (so, its a major investment!).
So, the ultimate verdict is to whether to go for more clockspeed or more cores? Money is not the problem here, and I will add more RAMs, SSD according to the need later after couple of months, but considering nothing else I need you to compare between these two machines! If the 12-core machine is even 1% faster I'll go for it, but I don't want to end up spending more money on the machine with will have less power and utility.
Regards.6 core 3.33 1st choice
8 core 2.93 or higher -
I am a video technology teacher and coach at a high school in NJ. I have footage of a basketball scrimmage that I need to get from my iPad onto a DVD. I tried importing it into iMovie without success. I have imported it into Final Cut Pro but the rendering time makes the process very cumbersome with 7/8 hours of rendering time to create a quick time file to then use with iDVD. Is there a quicker way to accomplish this.
The Mac does not come with a Blu-ray burner. So you would be burning a Blu-ray compatible file to a standard DVD-5 or DVD-9. Neither of which are ideal for authoring Blu-ray content.
Do an exhaustive search online about Blu-ray authoring and disk creation. This is not something for the hobbyist video creator (and I say hobbyist in the sense that you're not creating thousands of copies for mass distribution, so no one take offense.)
Blu-ray is expensive and requires a lot of planning and prep to do it right. But you can't burn an official Blu-ray disc on a Mac as they stand. And, Compressor doesn't burn discs, it only creates files. DVD Studio Pro would be the app that would burn the Blu-ray disc, and DVDSP has not been upgraded since long before Blu-ray came on the scene. -
Capturing in Logic 8 and Final Cut at the same time.
Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to use Logic 8 to capture the audio while HD video is captured in FCS 2? The reason, I have 20-30 channels of audio and have to do a live audio mix as I record which is not possible in FCP. Do I need to have 2 computers to do this? How would I sync the two machines? You'll need two computers for this. Capturing HD video is very taxing on your CPU.
If you capture timecode on both the audio & the video files, syncing the actual machines shouldn't be necessary. The files will lock up later when you put them together. -
Difficulty importing Video from camera to either iMovie or Final Cut Exp
Hi I am looking for some advice on importing film to imovie or final cut express. I was able to hook up the Canon HD camera to the my new Macbook Pro and import a game film to both iMovie and final Cut express last week. This week same camera and the movie runs but Imovie and Final Cut shut off almost immediately or if I use manual setting the video runs but nothing is captured?
I have thought that I may have changed settings on the camera but I do not actually do the filming. We have been able to download continuously to an older Mac using a newer camera from the same manufacturer Canon also HD.Your camcorder must be set to the correct output mode. On some camcorders, this is called VTR or VCR mode, but not all camcorders use the same terminology, so check the documentation that came with your device. On some camcorders you must set the output to DV mode or HDV mode, depending on whether the content is standard (DV) or high definition (HDV).
If all was working correctly I would unplug everything (camcorder wise) and clean out you plist and caches. See http://uimfaq.us/b3aANe then give it another go.

IMovie nor Final Cut Pro will import video from camcorder
Both iMovie 10.0.5 and the Final Cut Pro Trial I just downloaded (to test before purchasing) will not import my movie. The movie plays on my camcorder and it plays in both iMovie and Final Cut but when I click to import, a message appears in the top right corner that reads: NO DATA FROM DEVICE.
Once again, the movie plays on the camera AND plays on the screen. But there is nothing recorded into an event and no file / data transferred to the computer.
I searched the support forums and tried a freeware named DEBUT. It worked but the video playback was very poor, scratchy and blurry.
Processor 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
OSX 10.9.5
Camera Sony DCR-TRV460 (8MM, Digial 8, Hi8 tapes)
Firewire 4 pin to Firewire 800 cable, into Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor, into iMac.
How do I get these old tapes into iMovie or Final Cut for editing?I don't think I can help with your Digital 8 directly into iMovie 10.0.5 or FCPX, but try a few work-arounds.
Try copying iMovie'09 from old to new Mac via a memory stick or external HD. It is only 250 MB.
This still may not work on the new Mac as it may be an issue with Digital 8/Mavericks combination. Any way if you can get iMovie 09 onto new Mac ,give it a try.
OR
Buy an external HD and transfer some data onto this to free up some space on your MacBook.
Then use your MacBook /iMovie 09 to import to Events onto your external HD.
Connect external HD to new Mac and import the DV files in Media of iMovie 09 into FCPX.
A word of caution!
When the files are imported into FCPX from the Media in iMovie 09 check to see if files are copied or just referenced.
If they are copied then you can delete them from iMovie 09, if they are referenced then you must not delete from 09.
You can normally tell: if copied then it takes a while to transfer,If referenced then done almost immediately.
My guess is ,they will be copied, but check.
The above is a bit messy but may get you moving with your new Mac.
Buying a new Mac is an expensive way of overcoming an overloaded HD on the MacBook. Cheaper to buy an external HD.
This may be useful;
How can i move or copy projects and events to an external drive? (Version 9 and earlier)
Someone may be able to suggest a fix for Digital 8 into FCPX directly.

Green screen and foreground object
Can iMovie do its background dodge with a blue screen backdrop instead of a green one? If yes, how? The intention is to video a subject handling a somewhat green object (product-ware). Will iMovie treat that object as part of the background colour? I
