MacBook Air 2013 battery drains quickly while in sleep mode

I just purchased a 13" mid-2013 MacBook Air this week, and so far everything is working well - a remarkable improvement over my 2007 MacBook! But, I've noticed that the battery seems to drain very quickly while in sleep mode. For example, it drained 10% over five hours. I've turned off bluetooth and made sure that the PowerNap option is not selected under Energy Saver preferences. And the battery health/capacity seems to be good. Are there other things that I should turn off/check out? Has anyone else experienced this? Is this even abnormal for the battery to drain at this rate while in sleep mode? Thank you!!

    1. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.9 or later.
    2. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
    3. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    4. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    5. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Macbook Air 2013 battery problem

    Hi all,
I just got my brand new Macbook Air 2013 model today, I can't power it up until the AC Adapter is connected. When I finished all the setups, login into the system, I found out the  battery shows 0%. This is my first Mac, would like to know if this is normal. Cause from my experience with windows laptop, they all comes with pre-charged battery. Thank you very much for your assistance in advance.

That's not normal, & if it doesn't begin to work as expected after say, 15 minutes, try
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
but it's likely that you have a faulty computer.

  • MBA 2013 battery drain quickly during sleep after updated to mavericks

    Hi,
After I updated to mavericks this Tuesday, I noticed the battery drains quickly during sleep mode.
Before the system update, everything was ok. Each night after I closed the lid, it went to sleep and the battery only droped less than 5% after sleep of the whole night.
But during the last two nights after system update, it drained more than 50% of the battery during 8-hour sleep. I could feel some heat on its back when I picked it up. I did not change any system setting or installed any new apps.
my MBA: latest 2013 version, 13 inch, haswell i7, 8G ram, 256 SSD.
I liked my mba so much because of the long battery life. But now It was really annoying because I have to charge it very often.
Any ideas how to solve this issue?

    Hi Hans,
There's another thread going with the same issue as you... check:

  • MacBook Air 2014 battery drain OSX 10.9.5

    Health Information:
      Cycle Count: 62
Seeing the sudden battery drain after the upgrade to 10.9.5, any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi pandu9,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If the battery runtime on your MacBook Air is unexpectedly low, start with these troubleshooting tips:
    Built-In Diagnostic Tools
A great place to start when troubleshooting battery issues is the built-in diagnostics that are available on your Mac notebook. Review the following articles for more information on using diagnostics.
    Using Apple Diagnostics
    Using Apple Hardware Test
Note: The additional troubleshooting recommended below assumes you have run the above diagnostic appropriate for your computer and that no issues were found.
    My battery runtime is low
Identify what the battery life should be for the product you are troubleshooting.
The Tech Specs site provides Apple's battery life expectations for battery usage. The specifics for wireless web usage and standby time are included in the Tech Specs article for each product.
There are several common causes battery drain that you can minimize.
Take steps to optimize your battery life per the Optimizing Battery Life section earlier in this article.
A common cause of decreased battery life is a "runaway process." Make sure to check Activity Monitor for any runaway processes, especially after installing software updates or a new operating system. Installing updates is important to ensure optimal performance for all applications.
If you are still having battery runtime issues after optimizing your computer's performance and checking for runaway processes, test in Safe Mode. Safe Mode limits the active items on the system and allows testing in a more minimal environment. If the battery life is better in Safe Mode, you may need to do further software isolation for the items disabled by Safe Mode to determine what the power draw is while not operating in Safe Mode.

  • T410s battery drains quickly while suspended.

My T410s battery will drain within 2 days while suspended.  I have not tested hibernation but haven't noticed the same amount of drain.  On all my other laptops running Windows 7 or any other version I can suspend the computer and will see a slight battery drain over a 2 day period but not a complete drain.  I have it configured w. a SSD and wonder if this is the cause.  Are others experiencing the same thing?

I have no issue with hibernation.  I have it with suspend.  I did the update and the issue remains.  As described above, 7% over 10 hours is 30% over a weekend which is what I experience.  For me while suspended that is unacceptable.  I have an apple and had a Dell and have owned Lenovos over many generations.  Including the Lenovo that colleagues currently have.  None of these laptops have this issue.  Usually a 3-5% drain over 24 hours maximum.  Apple even less.  I upgraded my Apple Macbook pro to a SSD and the battery drain is a touch more than it was w. a standard hard drive but still not more than 3% a day while suspended.  I wonder since my T410s has a SSD if it is cause.
What configurations are others members of the forum using exactly? This is my only grievance with the computer and all updates have been applied to date.

  • New MacBook Air 13´´ - battery drains really fast

So I bought yesterday MacBook Air 13´´. I assumed it was going to be fully or half charged but the battery was dead when I opened the computer. Then I put it on charge and it took about 2-3 hours to fully charge it. After that the battery started to drain really fast, and I didn't expect that. I supposed MacBook 13´´has a battery which could last for about 13 hours, but this is to strange. I don´t have experience with Mac, this is my first Mac, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S. I updated OS X cause App Store said there's an available update. Don´t know if that has anything to do with it.

I´m currently in Germany and I´m flying back to Croatia tomorrow. So I won´t be able to do that. :/
I´ll try to drain battery to 0%, then recharge it again. I read somewhere that could help for first time charging and recharging.
Don´t know is it normal for Mac to come with drained battery?

  • MacBook Air 2009 battery draining rapidly.

The charge on my MacBook Air 2009 has been draining rapidly, last night I charged it overnight and this morning when I turned it on the MacBook is only charged to 11%. Any idea what is causing this? My MacBook says that the battery condition is 'Normal' and the MacBook was off whilst it was charging.
I've literally only just had a new HardDrive installed so I'd really hate to have to have a new battery as well.

Follow these steps to see the battery cycle count:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1519
Then look at the table below to see the maximum number of cycles your Mac is rated before the battery is considered spent and needs t be replaced.
For your MacBook Air 2009 it is likely 500 cycles.

  • New 2012 11 inch macbook air's fans remain on while in sleep

i purchased my new macbook air about two weeks ago and last night, i put my computer to sleep and noticed that the fans remained on. since then, ive reset the pram and the smc but it still keeps the fans on. i'm not sure if it should do this and i just didn't notice or if it's actually supposed to do that. any feedback would be apreciated.

i've also just noticed that this only occurs while it is connected to the charger. when it is unplugged, it goes into sleep properly but as soon as i plug it back in, it starts up again. i have no intention of reinstalling lion due to the imminent release of mountain lion. please let me know if i should take it back to the apple store. thank you.

  • Macbook air 2013 battery only has 4hour after the icon shows 100%

As title, when I charged the battery of MBA to 100%, the using time only shows about 4~5 hours.
I think that should be 9 hours.
    Does my MBA have problem?

  • Does leaving macbook air on all the time (while plugged in) to download torrents degrade battery life?

Does leaving macbook air on all the time (while plugged in) to download torrents degrade battery life?

You have a lot of things going on here...you are keeping the Air plugged in all the time, you should run on the battery periodically to give it some exercise, you are keeping it on all the time which may be keeping it under constant or near constant load, and you are doing all of that to download pirated content, for which you will get no help on here.

  • Macbook air 2012 battery issues after upgrading to Yosemite

Ever since upgrading to Yosemite about 2 months ago the battery on my MBA mid-2012 has been acting strangely. The battery drains considerably while sleeping with the lid closed. I don't use the laptop every day so it can often sleep for a few days. It's so bad that after 2-3 nights the battery is completely dead. I've reset the SMC, but so far it has not helped.
    Any ideas on the cause?
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi beekatt,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below will offer some suggestions if your battery is draining quickly.  Have you tried shutting the computer down to see if you get different results?
OS X Yosemite: If your battery runs out of charge quickly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18599?viewlocale=en_US
If your battery on your portable Mac runs out of charge more quickly than you expected, check your battery’s condition.
Hold down the Option key and click the battery icon  in the menu bar of your Mac.
You will see one of the following conditions:
Normal: The battery is functioning normally.
Replace Soon: The battery is functioning normally but holds less charge than it did when it was new.
Replace Now: The battery is functioning normally but holds significantly less charge than it could when it was new. You can continue to use your battery until you replace it without harming your Mac.
Service Battery: Your battery is not functioning normally, and you should have your Mac serviced.
    Monitor your portable computer’s battery
If your battery won’t charge completely
If your battery’s status is Not Charging
If an X appears on the battery icon in the menu bar
I hope this information helps ....

  • Macbook Air 2013

I just got myself a new Macbook Air 2013 and while I realized I couldn't expect the smoothest experience, I never expected this much hassle with it. So many differnet issues. No need to have a sad face about it, though - let's get together and figure out how to make this work! At least we only have one graphics chip to worry about this time around
This is going to be a pretty long post but I figured it's good to have it all in one place. Please correct me if you think this is the wrong way to post these things.
    Installing and booting
Booting from a normal 2013.6 USB key works fine, but I couldn't seem to get either GRUB or Syslinux working.
I was able to boot by first installing Arch Linux following the Macbook guide at the wiki (having a separate FAT32 /boot partition). Skip the bootloader installation.
Installing rEFInd from OS X (important!) and installing the EFI stub loader made me able to boot fine.
    Separate thread.
    Stability problems
This is the big worry for me. Every now and then my system hangs for a brief moment and everything involving net or disk access just hangs there for a while and then it seems to work.
So far it only seems to happen when I run something disk- or CPU-intensive. Also had an occassion when I couldn't start X and just got this repeating all over my screen:
ata1.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED
    ata1.00: cmd 61/08:f0:10:8c:c2/00:00:0b:00:00/40 tag 30 ncq 4096 out res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout)
    ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
On the next attempt it worked fine.
I did SMART short and long tests on my disk and they returned fine:
    smartctl -a
There are some messages in my boot that indicate this could be disk and/or ACPI related.
    journalctl -b
    dmesg
This was on a boot when my NIC was renamed from eth0 to wlp3s0 as noted under Wifi - this should hopefully not be a big deal to fix. Will update when I look more into it.
    uname -a:
    Linux temperance 3.9.7-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jun 20 22:45:32 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    WiFi
WiFi does not work out of the box. Installing wireless-bcm43142-dkms from AUR made me able to connect to my network. I haven't been able to get it stable yet -interface name changes randomly between wlp3s0 and eth0 between reboots and I get disconnected from my network every 30 minutes or so. Disconnects seem to correlate somewhat with the freezes mentioned above.
    Separate thread.
    Touchpad
Have only been able to get it to work like a one-button mouse using evdev for now. Looks like an upstream bug.
    Separate thread
    Audio
In order to get audio, I need to put the following in /etc/asound.conf:
    defaults.pcm.card 1
    defaults.pcm.device 0
    defaults.ctl.card 1
I'm no ALSA pro, but I can only seem to get output from the headphone jack so far - no speakers yet.

While I'm using Ubuntu and not Arch, I wanted to chip in with my experiences.
First, I am happy to tell you that I've found a fix for the ata errors/freezes (which for me were so bad I could hardly install) -- at least I think it's the same or related. I got udevd spitting errors about blkid timing out, and it couldn't find the disks. I found this in a Ubuntu forum -- sadly, I can't find the url now. Anyway, Pass
    libata.force=1:noncq
to the linux kernel parameters (in Ubuntu you can add this to /etc/default/grub). This disables NCQ, which according to that post wasn't needed.
YMMV and I am not certain that it doesn't have bad side effects, but for me it made the laptop usable.
    Other findings:
My Fn key, and thus delete, page up/down, media keys etc didn't work. That's because the keyboard has a new device id which isn't in usbhid. I added entries like the existing apple keyboards with the new device id (05ac:0291) and after recompiling, it works. I'm pretty sure this is fixable by passing the correct "quirks" flags to the usbhid module, e.g. "quirks=0x05ac:0x0291:0x00001248", but I'm not sure which flags should be set (I have an ISO keyboard layout which is yet another flag).
My sound card doesn't work. Or; i hear no sound at least ;-). After checking in alsamixer, it had two cards, one HDMI with S/PDIF only and one with analog in/out and digital in. I tried passing "index=1" to snd_hda_intel, which makes alsamixer pick up the right card by default. I'm not sure if the problem is that pulseaudio still has the wrong card, or something else.
My wifi works after installing bcmwl from Saucy (i.e. the upcoming Ubuntu 13.10 release), which was a relief because I feared this not being supported.
Sometimes after resuming from suspend, the screen is totally dark -- barely discernible in bright daylight. First I figured this was an issue with lightum (a daemon which monitors the lighting and adjusts keyboard and screen brightness), but after checking /sys/devices/pci0000\:00/0000\:00\:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness it turns out that when this happens, only the brightness levels 13, 14, and 15 (which is the brightest) have any brighness at all. 12 and under means no backlight. The only "fix" I've found so far is rebooting, which sucks. I hope this will get fixed (I will report a bug on Launchpad next time it happens).
Somewhere I picked up that passing
    i915.i915_enable_rc6=1
to the linux parameters enables some great power saving features in the GPU. From modinfo:
    i915_enable_rc6:Enable power-saving render C-state 6. Different stages can be selected via bitmask values (0 = disable; 1 = enable rc6; 2 = enable deep rc6; 4 = enable deepest rc6). For example, 3 would enable rc6 and deep rc6, and 7 would enable everything. default: -1 (use per-chip default) (int)
Oh, and if anybody knows how I get my GNU/Linux partition to show up in the Mac boot screen I would be grateful! Right now I have refit installed, which works but I would rather just use the built-in boot manager, which works on the predecessor (MBA 3,2).

  • IPhone 4s keeps connecting and disconnecting from my new Macbook Air 2013

Ok I've been having this problem, I recently got an 11 inch Macbook Air 2013 and after I try connecting my iPhone 4s it keeps connecting and disconnecting every 1-2 seconds. I already check the community, I know this subject has been asked many times. Nothing worked out though. My cable cord must be fine because it works perfectly on my PC. I updated the OS and iOS to their latest firmware and still nothing. Whenever I try opening iTunes I get this message saying " iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. This device is no longer connected. " Please if anyone fixed this issue I would appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

I just solved it, I hope this helps everyone who is experiencing the same problem. Apparently the iPhone seems to charge normally and connect to iTunes if the iPhone battery is over 60%-70%. This must be a power issue the MBA has.
