Macbook air 64mb or 128?

I want to buy the new macbook air as a replacement for the notebook I have, but I wanted some feedback: will 64mb flash storage be enough for everyday computer use plus netflix streaming? Also, for those of you have the new macbook, how do you like it?

I would go with 128GB since it also comes with 4GB of RAM which would double the speed and storage of a MBA, plus I find 64GB is barely enough for my iPad.

Neither the storage nor the RAM on a Macbook Air is designed to be upgradeable - you need to be certain what you want when you buy it. Given that, if you have any doubts at all as to 128GB being enough you should go for 256GB. It depends on what you are going to be doing. If you are going to clutter it up with lots of movies they will eat space very fast; and music will eat space fairly fast.
For what it's worth my iMac with notionally 500GB of storage (actually 463GB) uses 210 GB with a lot of documents and a fair amount of music and other audio recordings (but no movies). The basic System and applications will use a moderate amount; and remember that you shouldn't ever fill the storage right up as this will seriously affect the performance (at least 10% of the storage needs to be left free for system use - swap files and so on).

  • Mavericks on mid 2009 MacBook Air ?

    Hello everyone,
I have a mid 2009 MacBook Air (2MB Ram, 128 GB HD), running Snow Leopard. I am wondering if I should upgrade to Mavericks, or if I should just stay put with SL. Has anyone with the same or a similar computer upgraded, and if so, can you tell me about your experience?
    Thanks!

    Astute question.
I upgraded my girlfriend’s MacBook from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and it slowed down.  It had 2 GB of RAM.  I then upgraded her RAM to 8 GB and it cut the boot time by a factor of three.  So the memory size matters.  Unfortunatly you cannot upgrade the RAM in a MBA.
I would upgrade the operating system only when you find you need to.  Each new OS version tends to demand more memory.  When there are new applications that demand a new OS that may be a time to upgrade.  If that time should come you need not upgrade all the way to Maveicks.

  • Is XCode fast enough on a MacBook Air 11" 4GB RAM

Hello, in December I will be buying a brand new MacBook Air for school and personal use.  I will also be developing Apps as a developer for iOS using XCODE.  My concern is if a MacBook Air with 64/128 GB Flash Storage and 4GB RAM.  Should I switch to a pro, I am on a tight limit, but don't want to waste my money and regret it. Also, I heard the MacBook Air is very slow installing programs and such, all I would be able to do is check email....  is that true?
    THANKS FOR THE ANSWERS

I am by no means a programmer however I have installed and played around with Xcode on my 11" i5 128gb with 4gb of memory and it seems to run flawlessly.  Installed fast considering the immense size of the program (~7gb installed) and ran fine.  The screen resolution seems like it'd be the limiting factor on the 11" when running xcode.
Other then xcode, the new MBA's are very snappy even with the base 1.6ghz i5 processor and remember there is an option for the 1.8ghz i7.
I am not recommending against a pro but the air will surprise you.  Go in to a local apple store and check them out!
    Hope this helps.

  • Sound quality and coolers  on Macbook Air

Hello everyone ...I just bought a macbook air (1.86GHz, 128 SSD...) and I'm quite disappointed by its sound quality .... when I pull up the volume it sounds like worn-out speaker. My old macbook white sounds much much better .
Also it's getting hot and the cooler makes disturbing noise like a desktop machine all the time not only when I run applications. Is this common for all the macbook air(s) or I just need to take him to the doctor ?

    Hi softiam,
One thing to note on the MacBook Air, is that it has only one speaker. Unlike all the other Apple portables, there is only one speaker (located in the area of the return, shift, question mark, apostrophe keys).
With mono, versus stereo, sound the quality will sound different but it certainly shouldn't sound washed out. What are you listening to, something through iTunes?
What are you doing on the machine when the fan ramps up? How are you using the machine, is it on your lap, on a desk? What applications are you running?

  • Macbook Air 11" Speaker crackle

    Hi guys,
Are any of you having issues with speaker buzz at certain frequencies/volumes and certain songs. I'm having this issue with my right speaker but I'm not 100% if it is the speaker or the keys rattling. I find the function keys (top row) are quite crackly and may be contributing to this.
I've only had my MBA for two days and I was worried about this issue, am I the only one?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Hallo v66jack!
HA, but You know, I bought MacBook Pro, 13`3 in February as well and I gave it back after two weeks !!! The screen resolution is a JOKE!! 1280x800 I had in my white Macbook from 2007 !!!!!!!!!
I was waiting for retina in Macbooks Pro!!!! Why did they not make it?!!! I would even pay 2000 eur.
Thats why I bought Air .. resolution is better and screen is better...and now? I dont know what to do. The problem is that I am professional musician, who likes to hear some music all the time. I know MBA is not a professional audio player  , but it should not make this strange noise as we said!!!! Not this class device! It is so embarrassing!!!!!! The problem appears even if I speak with friends on Skype!!!
It is a real scandal, I thought they are pioneers but now I see apple is getting down slowly...
I will go to the shop and tell them. But what can they do?? NOTHING. This is the letter I wrote and the answer I received :
    Dear Letec Friends,
My name is Daniel Brylewski. After 5 years I just bought a second Mac, new MacBook Air 13,3 128 gb, on 26 th of July at your Store.
After two weeks, I see, that there is a problem with sound.
The thing is more complicated, because as I have made an analysis, the spakers are ok, but BECAUSE OF VIBRATION OF THE KEYBOARD , there is a terrible buzzing ( little addictional noise ) , which makes me really nervous and unhappy.
What shall I do now? Have You heard about some of this problems already?
When I put my hand on the keyboard , I can even feel , how it vibrates. When I press a little bit, it stops.
Problem appears even at volume about 70 % !!!
I am professional musician and I always hear some music at my macbook. Of course I know it is not professional audio device to play music on , but.. I think it is not right to have such a problem with computer that costs 1300 francs?!
What can You advise me? Because I can not imagine having this problem all the time.
I send You an example, Bartok Piano Concerto nr 2, part I.
Could You please hear it at your MacBook Air 13`   from the shop and tell me how it reacts??
the problem appears here from 0:07 and later ( from 2:54)
    all the best
    Daniel
    Answer:
    Dear Mr Brylewski
Thank you for your mail and for your analysis. But for us, it is not possible to solve the problem unless we have your device here in our store.
So you have to leave you're MacBook Air for two or three workdays in our store. In this time, we search the reason of the addictional noise and solve the problem.
    Best regards
So, it looks like they even dont know about problem that exists sionce years!!!
    It is really tragic!

    Hello
I recently purchased a Macbook Air with 1.7 Ghz Intel Core i5 4 gb Ram 11" with 128 Gb storage.
All is well but I would like to increase the storage in my Mac, to the maximum possible 512, 1 tb what ever possible.
I am in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia right now. No Apple Stores exist here at the moment. But I have noticed several authorized resellers.
Kindly guide me if, first of all this is possible or not, if yes then how can I go about doing this being in the country (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) that I am.
I also want to purchase an iMac, but the local shops don't seem to have stock and would like to inquire if I could order it online and have it delivered to my home/office here.
    Thank you for your time.
    Abdullah

You should go back to your Apple Reatiler Store since it is likely under warranty.
If'its not under warranty there e are a number of sites... here is one.

Personally I would sell the 128  and buy the one you need.

Can a 128 ssd storage still effectively work if I install windows 8.1 plus msoffice and a window-based proposal system? I plan to buy a macbook air entry level with 1.7 gh i5 processor.

If you are going to use Mac OS X and its associated applications, and a BootCamp partition with Windows 8, and MS Office and all of the work created there, you will more than likely run out of space on a 128 GB SSD pretty quickly...especially if you put any music, photos or videos on it.  Those things take a lot of space so you will have to be very, very careful about what you want to put on a 128 GB storage space.  You would be better off going for 512 GB with what you plan on doing with it.

I see that you are saying all versions of Windows 8 are failing on your system, but are you including 32-bit and 64-bit flavors?  I understand why 32-bit versions might give you grief (too much RAM for a 32-bit system to handle).  A 64-bit system might still have device driver issues.  Microsoft does not auto-magically have all the device drivers in the world that are necessary to make any system usable.  The original device manufacturers must provide Microsoft with drivers before the Windows Update servers would be able to communicate said drivers to the computers in question.
In regards to Apple devices, Apple has not yet released the device drivers needed to run the hardware with Windows 8.  Apple has released the drivers for previous versions of Windows (XP SP2 and higher, Vista RTM and higher, 7 RTM and higher) to their userbase, but not to Microsoft for distribution through Windows Update (unless I am mistaken).  Until Apple releases a version of Boot Camp updated for use with Windows 8, they have not yet released any form of the full collection of necessary device drivers for normal device function with Windows 8.  Running compatibility mode on the Windows 7 device driver bundle via boot camp is not a fully palatable solution because compatibility mode generally is meant for application programs, not device driver services.  Therefore, partial compatibility might be gained by using the Windows 7 device drivers for Windows 8 with the compatibility mode enabled prior to install.  Unfortunately, much unanticipated incompatibility is equally likely with such a decision.
Some parting words on the subject may be necessary for clarification: prior to the RTM versions of Windows 8, the trial versions of Windows 8 were distributed with a much wider array of device drivers than the RTMs.  This was for Microsoft's testing purposes.  Furthermore, some of the architecture used during the trial period likely used Windows 7 engines more than Windows 8 engines.  This means the Windows 7 drivers pack would have had more likelihood of working during the Beta and Release Candidate periods than during the final Golden Master period we have now entered.  Regardless, it is not recommended by Apple (our hardware manufacturer) to use another method of installing Windows on a Mac than to utilize Boot Camp.
As Mende1 suggested, you would be wise to reinstall a previous version of Windows you may have been running.  Also, given your previous post, you will want to repair your OS X installation back to full functionality prior to the Windows reinstall.  For a reasonable timeline estimate, consider that it took 89 days from the original release of Windows 7 by Microsoft until Apple originally released device drivers via an updated Boot Camp.  That puts a reasonable ETA for the necessary Boot Camp update at January 22nd/23rd.  Even though this does not seem to apply to your situation, the discounted download for the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade will end after January 31st.
    Cheers!

  • Why does my Macbook Air only have 64MB of dedicated video memory

Hello, I created a windows partition on my Macbook Air and after going into my Display settings I see that it only has 64MB of dedicated video memory out of 1696MB. Please tell me how I can fix this problem as I should have much more Dedicated memory from my Macbook air.
Additional INFO: MacBook Air Early 2014 edition, and has Intel 5000.

Hey thanks a lot for the quick reply Loner, however, I'm not really sure what you mean (sorry I'm a bit slow when it comes to computers). I checked out your link, and when I do the same steps as in the link by going into screen resolution> advanced> adapter: it shows Total Available Graphics Memory- 1696MB, and Dedicated Video Memory 64MB, but it only uses 64MB, it doesn't use more when it needs to.
I tried playing GTA 4 on my laptop via bootcamp, and in-game it tells me my laptop is only using 64MB of video memory and the game requires at least 260 or so, and my laptop won't use more (at least I'm pretty sure it is not using more or the game wouldn't give me that mssg).
Again, thanks for your response, and looking forward to what you have to say, or any other that want to chime in Thanks a lot as always.

Is it possible to upgrade my macbook air 13" from 1.86 GHz 128 gb flash and 2GB memory to the 2.13 GHz  256 and 4GB memory, how much would it cost?

About the only thing that "might" be able to do is upgrade the SSD. OWC sells SSD upgrades for that unit. You would have to contact Apple though to verify that no warranty issues would apply when making the upgrade.

Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.
Perfect 2TB HD, very slim, the "little giant"   made by Toshiba (have several of these) $119

No, you can only replace the SSD with a larger one and you'll need to use a 3rd party vendor (see OWC) because Apple doesn't sell SSD upgrades.
