MacBook Air (A1304) - Disk Problem

Hi,
I have this machine:
tro Date:
October 14, 2008
Disc Date:
June 8, 2009
Model No:
A1304 (EMC 2253*)
Subfamily:
Late 2008
Model ID:
MacBookAir2,1
Std RAM:
2 GB
Std VRAM:
256 MB
Std Storage:
120 GB (4200 RPM)
Std Optical:
None*
For a while it’s been very slow to boot up (~25 minutes), however a few days ago I borrowed an external DVD, removed everything I could and proceeded to reinstall the OS.
This appears to work ok, but it'll now not restart (flickers between the logo and prohibited sign).  I tried booting to the console but its displays the following error message:
"error loading kernel ' mach_kernel' (0x7).
Lastly I then popped the install DVD back in and ran Disk utility and that reports 'The drive has reported a fatal hardware error' - so I guess unless I'm missing something obvious it needs a new hard drive?
This is quite old now, so I don't want to spend lots on a repairs, so my questions are this:
1. Can the hard drive be safely swapped out by a non authorised tech?
2. What hard drives are compatible with this one? (UK links appreciated)
Many Thanks,
Jerry

I have had this same problem. Has the wifi worked before? What I did was I turned my wifi off, then I restarted my computer, then I turned my wifi back on. If that doesnt work, leave the wifi off, and shut it down for a while. Hope I could help!

    Hey iWeb plubishing problems,
I would first check to make sure that you meet the system requirements for OS X to support Documents in the Cloud. For that your Mac’s needs to be running at least OS X Lion 10.7.5 or later to make sure that everything syncs. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • Macbook air Shut down problem

    Hi everyone,
I used to have the shut down problem with my Macbook air. I have an 11" Later 2011 Macbook air.
The problem did not go away after updating to Mountain lion.
I just realized that although I was closing all programs, I was not ejecting my 3G modem/dongle.
Once I ejected it before commanding it to shut down, it did shut down properly.
I thought I should share it with you. May be there is a program that has not been closed or a devise that has not been unplugged/ejected properly and is restricting the shut down.
It worked for me. Hope it will work for you.
    Enjoy your Mac.

  • MacBook Air Hard Drive Problems?

Ok, so I have a MacBook Air. I don't know the exact model, but it's a school laptop from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in Maine. I was watching a movie on the laptop, and I went to use Google Chrome, and Finder froze, and I got the little rainbow wheel spinny thing. So I shut down the computer, then when I turned it back on I got the blinking question mark folder. I looked everywhere for answers, and chose internet recovery. I did that, finally got to the disk utility section, and all that is there is "Disk0" with "Mac OS X Base System" under it. I'm familiar with what disk utility is, and I know that Startup Disk and Macintosh HD should be there, but they're not. There's nothing else there. I'm freaking out right now. There was a crap ton of files on there that I need (about 55 gigs worth, it's just music files and ideas). Almost 3 years of music production and important stuff for school. I looked everywhere for a place to send my laptop to, like Drivesavers, and some other company, and I don't have 1500 dollars to get back this stuff. I have literally tried everything on every link, every forum, and every page on here, and Google, and nothing is working. I need help now, if there's a solution I need to know it. Nothing will work, I've tried safe mode, verbose mode, holding option/alt, shift, command+shift+V/S, and absolutely nothing but getting to Internet Recovery, and then going to reinstall mountain lion 10.8, and there's nothing to choose from to reinstall it, and nothing in disk utility but disk0 and mac base system. I haven't downloaded anything unsafe. I just really need my files back without paying 1000s of dollars, and without destroying this laptop. I didn't get the warranty from my school for the laptop, because I don't have 150 dollars. I treated this laptop with care, and then all of a sudden this crap happens. It's never been dropped, there isn't any unusual sounds coming from it, it turns on fine, except this hard drive, or SSD, or IDK what it's called I'm not too tech savy with a problem like this. Please respond ASAP, and please read this thoroughly, and don't ask stuff that has been answered, not to sound like a jerk, but I've had problems here, and people just ignore me and blow me off.

Is there an open application that is using data on the external drive?  If so, quit it before trying to eject.

  • How to de-clutter MacBook Air Hard Disk?

    Hi,
My MacBook Air has a Flash Hard Drive capacity of 120.47 GB, of which only 26.22 GB are free.
Two heads, Backups (23.44 GB) and Others (25.92 GB) are taking up the lion's share of hard disk space.
I have a 1 TB External USB Disk connected.
How can I take off these choking files and place them on the 1 TB Disk if required?
    Regards
    Rahul

"Other" includes necessary system files. The amount of that on your boot volume isn't especially high.
First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Macbook Air Capacity showing Problem

Hey! I'm having a problem with my MacBook Air 13" 2013 (128GB). When I go to finder, it shows that I have 37.02GB of available storage. But after calculating what's in Macintosh HD, I figured out that I had 49.17GB of free storage. But when I went to "Abou this mac", there was 17.07GB of free storage (shown in f\the first pic), and curiously, it showed that I had 257.49GB of apps!!! So I searched for some discussions, and figured out that I had to turn off FireVault, even though it was already off, so I turned off also Firewall. But the surprise was the second pic, no more apps, and no more Music, and lots of others, and movies and photos have shrinked down?!?! At the end, I decided to repair the disk through Disk Utility. But that made everything even worse! (pic 3). Now I had nothing other than backups and other, and finder shows 37.02GB of free storage! Thanks in advance

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Wipe data macbook air without disk

i wanna wipe me data i have a macbook air 2012 mt lion
my mac didnt come with a disk
    how do i do this????

Lion and Mountain Lion do not come with a separate DVD, the recovery Hard Drive is used for reinstalls, etc.
Restart holding both the Command and R keys, you will then be on the recovery hard drive, and have a window with several options.  You can choose to reinstall, use disk utility to erase and install or whatever you want to do.

  • Macbook Air 2013 USB problems (won't connect/ reconnecting)

I have a new Macbook Air 13-inch Mid 2013 with all the upgrades possible (1.7 Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD). I am running Mac OS X 10.8.5. Every software is at the latest version.

USB (XHCI Root Hub USB 2.0 Simulation):Port 2 on bus 0xa connected or disconnected: portSC(0xe0206e1)
USBF:          6342.136          The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 2 of Hub at 0x14000000)

USBF:          6349.481          The IOUSBFamily has successfully enumerated the device (Port 2 of Hub at 0x14000000).

The Identifier message keeps repeating every couple of seconds until I plug the phone out. It also won't show in System Report -> USB.
The second device is a Kinect for Windows (Model 1517). Here it is almost the same. dmesg gives me the following output:
USB (XHCI Root Hub USB 2.0 Simulation):Port 1 on bus 0xa connected or disconnected: portSC(0xe0206e1)
USBF: 6916. 69 The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 2 of Hub at 0x14100000)
USBF: 6916. 69 The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate the device (Port 2 of Hub at 0x14100000).
These three lines keep repeating every couple of seconds until I plug it out again. But here I get something in System Report -> USB:

This is still a little strange because there are supposed to be 3 devices (the motor is missing).
So, I haven't yet had the chance to test on other computers but I will try to get my hand on one this weekend. And I will buy an external powered USB-hub to see if it is a power issue, which I doubt because the phone doesn't need that much and the Kinect comes with an external power supply.
Any idea how I can use my hardware? Is there anything more I have to look for? Known bugs? Do you need more information? ANY help is highly appreciated!
    Thank you!

For me the issues are resolved but I guess it won't help you much. Sry.
The HTC One could not properly connect because the USB cable was broken somehow. I bought a new one and it worked ever after. It's crazy because I tried 3 cables before (which I had successfully used with other devices), but they were all very cheap, from the same manufacturer and bought at the same time. Must have been a bad batch or something.
The Kinect was a different story. Here the problem was that the firmware was not compatible with the driver on the MAC. I did some research and since I can't make my own drivers I got myself another Kinect with an older firmware and that resolved this issue.
    Good luck.

  • Installing photoshop elements and premiere elements on a MacBook Air without disk drive.

I recently purchased a computer bundle form my school and I receive the Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 and Adobe Premiere Elements 12 with the bundle.  It came with two DVD-ROMs and activation codes, however my MacBook Air does not have a disk drive.  Is there another way to download the program with only the activation codes instead of using the DVDs.

Yes, download and install the trial version.
Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 | Adobe
Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Premiere Elements 12 | Adobe
Enter your serial number when prompted and the software will be fully licensed on your MacBook Air. The 30 day time limited trial restriction will be removed.

  • Macbook Air app storage problem

I have a 256gb Macbook Air with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5. Everything is running fine except that when I open up my storage information it says that apps are taking up 100gb of space, however, when I go to my finder > applications > get info it says that my applications are only taking up 11gb. I don't have much space left on my hard drive so this is a bit of an issue of me and also kind of confusing. How can I have 100gb of applications taking up space on my computer when I only have 11gb worth of applications?
I only have the default applications and Google Chrome, Skype, uTorrent, Photoshop and Lightroom installed.
Is there any way that I can reduce the gb spent on applications without deleting anything?
    Thank you!

  • Macbook air hdmi connection problem

I cannot get my macbook air to connect to my tv via an hdmi cable. I suspected my cable until my neighbor had the same issue. Have others experienced this and is there a solution?

I have had this same problem. Has the wifi worked before? What I did was I turned my wifi off, then I restarted my computer, then I turned my wifi back on. If that doesnt work, leave the wifi off, and shut it down for a while. Hope I could help!
