I have 17,000 photos that I view and use in iPhoto on my MacBook Pro. I would like to trade up to a MacBook Air. How do I handle my photos and keep adding to them?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

I am photo streaming my docs from my macbook air and want to assure they do not get auto deleted after 30 days??

I have a macbook air, and an Iphone 4S, as well as an Ipad 2. I have many pictures that I was just now sending to my "Icloud free 5 gig" I noticed a comment that stated that Photo will delete the oldest files after 30 days so as to manage size?? I don't want to have that happen, I want to put them there and leave them there. I don't want the cloud space deciding which pictures shoudl be dumped. . .
Am I overlooking or misinterpreting something? I mean I am pretty concerned and if that is the case, I want to pull them back down or whatever and have them stay on the individual devices. . .I figured it would be free space that I could delete if I wanted to, not arbitrrarily by a date and some unknown valuating system of measure. . .

No. Be sure you have transferred the entire contents of your old /Home/Music/ folder.
Create a new user account on your old computer. Have your granddaughter tell you what she would like the username to be and what password she wants. Be sure to set the new account with Administrative authority. Then log into this new account and delete your old account.

Log into the app store using the Apple ID you used to set your computer up. Look under purchases. If it is not there you may need to accept it or to unhide it

Photos in the ?Camera Roll can be deleted by tapping on Select, then selecting the photos to be deleted and finally tapping on Trash.
Photos in albums that were copied to the device by syncing with your computer running iTunes are deleted by syncing again. But before clicking on Apply or Sync deselect the no long wanted albums in iTunes. Finally click on Apply.

Since iPLM failed to help try the following:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

On your iPhone ..
Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then tap Settings > General > Date & Time
Switch: Set Automatically ON
No data is lost due to a reset.

No, I accidently erased my pic's and my Music from my iPhone 5 when I hooked it up to my New iMac Air when I sync it. I thought when you sync it saves all your Data from my iPhone,,,,Wrong! It did the opposite, and saved what was on my iMac Air to my iPhone, which was Nothing, since it was Brand new. It won't delete the pic's from my iPad. Lucky for me, I downloaded them all back to my iPhone from iCloud.

I am debating between an external hard drive and utilizing iCloud. icloud makes me a little nervous....having my entire library in "the cloud" and deleted off of my desktop - do most of you who use icloud for music and photos have a backup on external hard drive anyway? iTunes Match allows you to put 25,000 songs in the Cloud. At present it isn't possible to add more storage but I wouldn be surprised if that isn't an option offered in the future. With iTunes Match you allow Apple to match your songs (purchased from Apple, ripped from your own CDs are purchased elsewhere). When Apple cannot match a song a copy of yours is uploaded.
Once the match process is complete (for my 24,000+ collection it took a couple days) the fun begins. Since my MBA can't hanle all my music, I use iTunes Match to download a small selection of my music every couple of weeks. My music remains in the cloud even when I delete them from my computer and if I have WiFi accesss I can get new songs. It is a great service and much more convenient than keeping your MBA's music on an external drive.

MacBook Air and Mac Mini Combination

I am trying to decide between a new (rumored to be out soon) MacBook Pro 15'' or a MacBook Air. If I take the latter option, I will need an accessible hard drive onto which to offload my photos, videos, and other large files. Would the combination of a MacBook Air and a Mac Mini work well for this? Could I use the MacBook Air essentially as the monitor for the Mac Mini when I am using its hard-drive? Are there any other drawbacks or compromises I should think about? Thank you in advance.

If you're looking for an external storage solution, for the same cost of the Mac Mini you can get a 1.0TB Time Capsule. If you're looking for a computer to pair with the MBA, for the sake of disc sharing and such then the Mac Mini is a great option. But if you're looking for a machine to serve as a data storage unit, then it's definitely not a good choice.
External hard drives range from 5GB to 1TB, get something that fits your needs. The cost of a 250, 320 or 500GB are extremely reasonable.
