Macbook Air and Airport Extreme

I just purchased an air for work, and I have noticed that the networking against my airport extreme is much slower than the airport against my mac book pro. Is anyone else experiencing network performance issues. I also noticed that I cannot turn show time connected option off.

Wow, glad I am not the only one. I took my Air to my garage and tried to check some security cameras I have in my office and it took them forever to come up (via Safari) and the video was almost still. Then I fired up my old iBook G4 and loaded Safari and checked the cams. Nice and fast, can see people moving and all. They are both on the same network which uses a Airport Extreme. I wonder what the deal is? I know the iBook is obviously using G and not N since N was not out when I got it, and I assume my Air is using N. I would of figured the Air would be much faster. Its pretty much worthless in this application. Wonder whats up?

  • Macbook pro and airport extreme don't work

A friend (and all those tv commercials) say everything just works with Macs. Well, not exactly. New Macbook Pro and Airport Extreme can't connect me to the internet. I still have PC connected via ethernet cable to my cable modem and router which is in the basement where the cable enters the house. I've tried the different options in Airport Extreme setup and nothing works. It doesn't help Apple assumes I know everything about DHP PPPOE NAT or whatever all those silly things are.
Can anyone explain in +very simple+ terms how I get this expensive piece of aluminum connected to the internet?
    Thanks.

Hello sofarapplesux. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I assume that you will continue to use the modem and router in the basement to get your Internet access ... correct? What is the make/model of this router?
If that's the case, I will also assume that you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) connected by Ethernet to this router ... correct?
So your overall network configuration should look something like the following:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Internet port] router \[LAN port] > (Ethernet cable) > \[WAN port] AEBSn ... close?

It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

  • Why can't I back up my Macbook Air using Airport extreme.

I "used to" back up my Macbook air via Time machine using external harddisk connected to Airport extreme, of course back up wirelessly over WiFi. But now I've seen on Apple support page about Airport extreme that this cannot be done anymore. I've only 3 choices to do Time machine back up using Time capsule, external harddisk that connected to Time capsule or connect harddisk directly to Macbook air. But not harddisk connectd to Airport extreme anymore. So did Apple just change how backing up can be done recently? And is there any way I can back up using harddisk connected to Airport extreme?
Thanks in advance for any help.

But now I've seen on Apple support page about Airport extreme that this cannot be done anymore.
Not sure what  you mean here by "anymore".
Apple never did officially support Time Machine backups to a drive connected to the USB port on any of the Generation 1 though 5 AirPort Extreme versions.  These were all the "flat" or "square" shaped versions of the AirPort Extreme.
Some users seemed to be able to do this though, while others.....like me....had nothing but problems when they tried it.
Time Machine backups are supported with a USB drive connected to the newer "tower" 802.11ac version of the AirPort Extreme.

Do you have the drive that is connected to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme mounted and displayed on the desktop of your Mac?  If you do, it should appear as an option to choose as a destination for Time Machine backups, even though this is not officially supported if you have a Gen 1 through Gen 5 AirPort Extreme.

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • Apple AirPort WiFi connects to MacBook Air and iPad but not iPod Touch

I got my iPod touch 4th Gen in December for xmas and the wifi has worked perfectly fine until about a week ago only on my ipod, it just says 'Unable to Connect' everytime I try and connect but works on my MacBook Air and iPad
    It's a WPA2 Personal security
I've tried all the suggestions on the Apple Support page, including resetting the network settings

Does the iPod connect to other networks?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

NAS storage, or networked together,  Airport Extreme
with Airport Extreme, you can have an attached HD on the back that any MAC on the network can read / write to
    thats what I do, easy.
attach a HD on the back of your Airport Extreme, put files, etc etc on it for any Mac or network to use / read / write to.
Also I store movies on it that I can watch WIFI on my Macbook Air, or ipads
    what fun.

  • MacBook Air and Mac Mini Combination

I am trying to decide between a new (rumored to be out soon) MacBook Pro 15'' or a MacBook Air. If I take the latter option, I will need an accessible hard drive onto which to offload my photos, videos, and other large files. Would the combination of a MacBook Air and a Mac Mini work well for this? Could I use the MacBook Air essentially as the monitor for the Mac Mini when I am using its hard-drive? Are there any other drawbacks or compromises I should think about? Thank you in advance.

I'm going to agree with tele_player!
If you're looking for an external storage solution, for the same cost of the Mac Mini you can get a 1.0TB Time Capsule. If you're looking for a computer to pair with the MBA, for the sake of disc sharing and such then the Mac Mini is a great option. But if you're looking for a machine to serve as a data storage unit, then it's definitely not a good choice.
External hard drives range from 5GB to 1TB, get something that fits your needs. The cost of a 250, 320 or 500GB are extremely reasonable.

  • Extending a network with Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme (via Belkin powerline)

    Hello -
I've seen many topics about extending wireless networks here, but none seems to resolve the issue I'm having. I currently have a setup where a DSL cable modem is connected to a Time Capsule and I need to extend this network to another room using an AirPort Extreme.
I live in a very old apartment in Brazil and the walls seem to block the signal from one room to another, hence the need to extend it. Since wireless signal is very weak between rooms, I bought a Belkin powerline AV500 so I could connect both Time Capsule and AirPort using the electrical power at home (just installing a regular Ethernet cable between rooms is not an option).
I started with the basics: configure the Time Capsule + DSL as a standalone network, and it works perfectly within it's range. Then I connected the Belking powerline, plugged a MacBook via Ethernet on the other end and still got very good results (actually better speed than expected). Used it for a while with streaming and other network intensive tasks to make sure it could sustain the connection.
Finally, pluggned the AirPort Extreme on the Belking powerline and this is where the problems started. AirPort Utility 6.3.1 only gives me the option of extending a network wirelessly - it doesn't seem to give me the option of extending it via Etherenet (roaming), which is not good in my case. Luckly I had a copy of AirPort Utility 5.6 which seems to do the job (or I thought so), but it's still not working well.
Although I managed to configure both with the same name, it doesn't seem reliable and some devices (the iPhone 5, for example) are unable to connect and end up with a self-asigned IP address. I'm almost sure I'm doing something wrong on the setup, as I've seen a similar setup working before, so if anyone out there has any clue of what can be done, it will be much appreciated.
Attached the screenshots of both Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme configurations.
    Thanks a lot,

    Time Capsule:

Hello JuliaApple. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You have several ways to configure both base stations for what you are trying to do.
The simplest would be to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to "join" (AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network) your existing 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). In this type of configuration the TC would perform as any other wireless client and not perform as a router. It will; however, still allow for both backups and sharing USB devices attached to it.

  • Using an iBook G3 on and Airport Extreme Network

    Hi,
We currently have an iBook G3 800 MHz (no airport card) and are planning to get a new superfast 24" iMac 3.06 GHz. My son will be getting a newer MacBook (assumedly with Airport Extreme built in) through school.
My question: If we set up an Airport Extreme wireless network, will including the old iBook (since it has only non-Extreme Airport potential) slow the rest of the network down, and, if so, would the slow down be enough to notice?
Would upgrading the OS on the iBook (currently 10.3.9) matter?
    Thanks,
    Rob S.

Hi, Rob. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
+If we set up an Airport Extreme wireless network, will including the old iBook (since it has only non-Extreme Airport potential) slow the rest of the network down+
    Yes.
+would the slow down be enough to notice?+
Probably not (at least for the internet). If you're swapping files between computers, it will slow that down on your network, but not troublesomely so (at least, not in my experience). The way I understand it, unless you have internet access in excess of 11 MB, you are not going to slow your internet experience down at all by having the iBook up and running on your network. We use ours on our 10 MB internet and don't see a slowdown with our newer computers when the iBook G3 is on the network.

  • Are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

Sonos uses its own priopietory wireless protocol SonosNet to distribute audio data among all its products, thus it should not affect other network devices which use standard WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n protocol at all though they may share the same radio channel for wirless signaling.
On my dual-band (5 GHz / 2.4 GHz) Airport Extreme staion, I select the option "802.11n Only (5GHz) - 802.11n (2.4GHz)" and turn on "Use wide channels" in Wireless configuration in order to use only 802.11n protocol and more radio channels to achieve maximum wireless bandwidth of 400 Mbps. This bandwidth is necessary for quick Time Machine backup to NAS connected to the Airport Extreme station through Ethernet cable. So my iMac and MacBook Pro always connected to the Airport Extreme through 5 GHz radio channel with 802.11n protocol whereas my iPhone 4S always connected through 2.4 GHz radio channel with the same protocol.
In my living room Sonos ZP-90 (same as new CONNECT model) zone player is connected to Airport Extreme directly through Ethernet cable (recommended by Sonos) and Sonos S5 (same as new PLAY:5 model) zone player in bedroom is connected wirelessly through SonosNet protocol to the ZP-90 zone player in living room.
These devices are in operation simutaneouly most of the time. Music is playing through the Sonos ZP90/S5 zone players througout the day, I am streaming viedo through Internet (fibre broadband 25 Mbps) on my MacBook Pro in bedroom or iMac in living room or reading news on my iPhone. So far so good and have no encounter any interference problem for about three years. Further more bandwidth for 802.11n protocol does not seem to be affected at all.
In fact with a low power Fujitsu USB drive (2.5" / 500 GB, designed for notebook) plug into USB port of Airport Extreme, it can be used as NAS drive for Sonos music distribution system without any problem. Just transfer all files from Music folder in my home directory on iMac into this NAS drive and set it up as music source in "Manage > Music Library Settings" in Sonos Controller for Mac application will do. Though the same drive can be served as Time Machine's backup disk as well, an independent full-fledged NAS drive for Sonos and Time Machine backup is better long-term solution for reliability and performance. With the NAS configured as sole music source, you do not need to keep any computer powered on all the time in order to play music through the Sonos system.
