Macbook air and aperture 3

Hints on using Aperture 3 on a macbook air?

A couple of points here. 1) When you talk about "using Aperture 3" on a MacBook Air, it really depends on what you are doing. If you are scrolling through versions, projects, opening them, etc. . you will say it works great. On the other hand, if you open a large raw image, adjust the curves, brush that adjustment in while detecting edges (for example) you will notice that it lags and is slow. So, whether or not the MBA will stand up to Aperture really depends on how demanding you are of it. 2) Someone suggested trying it in a Mac store. I believe that all of the MBA's in the store are 2 GB ram. You can buy one online with 4 GB ram, but you won't be able to test drive it in a store. this may make a difference. 3) all that being said, and rambling on and on, here's some advice: If you want to use Aperture frequently for serious editing, it isn't a great choice. The processor is simply too slow. IMHO.

  • Macbook Air and Aperture

    Hello,
Did anybody see Aperture on the Macbook Air at the Mac World?
    How does it run?
    JO

Has anyone reading this actually used a MacBook Air with Aperture installed? I'm wondering because I bought one yesterday, and everything was great at first - but when I installed Aperture and ran it, as soon as I launch the application it crashes (every time). The other two apps I've installed run fine - iWork, and OmniFocus.
I tried many things - including downloading the Aperture update from Apple, reading up online, etc. Then today, spent almost the entire day in the Apple store at the Genius Bar trying to figure it out. We removed and re-installed Aperture; and even did a 3 hour re-install of OS/X. Nothing helped. Then at the end of the day, when I started considering swapping to a new machine, they noticed that Apple's literature for Aperture does not directly list the MacBook Air. Hopefully because it's new.
HOWEVER, MacBook Air does use shared memory for the video subsystem; so it's possible there's a major bug in the early release; SURELY Apple plans to support Aperture. I wasn't able to swap the whole machine out because the other stores are already sold out. Anyway, given that likely at least 10,000 MacBook Air's have been sold in the first ~2weeks, I thought someone else reading this may have tried it?
I saw the MacBook Air at MacWorld, and reported on it on my blog (www.bellc.com/blog). I didn't see any of them running Aperture at the show, but they may have been; the crowds were too thick (as the photos on my blog show!) to get at all of the machines looking for it.
I sure hope this is some kind of a weird, one-off technical problem or malfunction with my machine; however the more I thought about it after today, the less that makes sense. Since I can't get my hands on a second MacBook Air yet, it was a consensus that my best debug approach would be to put the question up in a forum, and see if anyone else has been successful with Aperture on a MBA.
When I learn more, I will post again here too.

  • Macbook Air and Aperture SSD storage space?

I recently purchased the new Macbook Air 13" i5 with 128 GB SSD and 4GB of Ram. I have 50Gb of photos.
1.) Can I store these photos on a Time Machien and file share?
2.) Should I purchased a gigabit ethernet NAS drive like a DROBO?
3.) Should I go with an attached Thunderbolt NAS drive?
4.) What is the best way to manage the photos on a an  external drive basically?
    Thanks

By all means test as Kirby recommended.
Most important is that image originals should be backed up in multiple locations prior to import into Aperture or any other images management application. Yes there are printed workflows that fail to note that critical step. Such manuals, tutorials, etc. are incompetent in that regard.
As you start out with Aperture learn what referenced Masters are, and always use a Referenced-Masters Library. If you screw up and some images get "managed" instead of "referenced" that is no big deal because from within Aperture Masters can easily be relocated.
Managed masters or mixed managed and referenced masters are fine in the beginning with few images; the reason for always using a Referenced-Masters Library even in the beginning with only 50 GB of image files is for consistency. Consistency reduces the likelihood of error, and later as Library size grows having Masters referenced on external drives will be far superior.
IMO referenced Masters make far more sense than building huge managed-Masters Libraries.
    • Hard disk speed. Drives slow as they fill so making a drive more full (which managed Masters always does) will slow down drive operation.
    • Database size. Larger databases are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller databases are.
    • Vaults. Larger Library means larger Vaults, and Vaults are an incremental repetitive backup process, so again larger Vaults are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller Vaults are. One-time backup of Referenced Masters (each file small, unlike a huge managed-Masters DB) is neither incremental nor ongoing; which is by definition a more stable process.
Managed-Masters Libraries can work, but they cannot avoid the basic database physics.
Like you I work from a 128 GB boot SSD, and I suggest this workflow:
Original images never change, so I prefer to manually copy them to two locations asap after capture: one location is the MBP SSD and the other is an external backup HD that itself gets backed up off site regularly. That assures me that "the pic is in the can." Until two digital files exist on different media I do not consider the pic in the can.
Then I reformat the card in-camera.
The Masters then get imported into Aperture from the SSD by reference (i.e. "Storing Files: in their current location" on the SSD). After editing is complete (may take weeks or months), from within Aperture I relocate the referenced Masters to an external hard drive for long-term storage.
I do use Time Machine routinely on the MBP, but for the daily-volatile activities going of the MBP. I prefer not to have TM be my backup-of-originals protocol. Instead TM backs up the SSD on the TM schedule and I back up original images asap based on my shooting schedule. Also the TM drive is a different drive than the drives used for long-term original image files archiving.
TM does back up my Library because the Library lives on the SSD but I do not assume that TM works for Library backup. I back the Library up to Vaults (on the same drives I put archives of Masters on) independent of TM. IMO one should back up image files and back up Vaults manually after verifying that what is being backed up is not broken, because automatic backup will just back up a broken Library or whatever.
Note that Masters need only be backed up once (but to multiple backup locations) and that backup should happen immediately after copying to the hard drive from the camera card, before involving Aperture or any other images management app.
Time Capsule is an ongoing regular-routine backup process. Image originals instead need irregularly timed backup, once, before import.
I recommend directly-attached external hard drive(s) rather than NAS for your situation. Sometimes NAS setups have a tendency to break with OS version changes or app version changes.
Sorry for the redundant verbosity above but some was copied from previous posts.

I ordered my Macbook Air with Aperture two years ago. I now have an iMac - can I use that with Aperture in any way? I appreciate that it is a different computer but I am now the end user of both devices and I was just wondering if it was possible.
    Thanks,
    Sean

The answer would be in your software license agreement for Aperture. However if you cannot locate it you can ask in the Aperture forum, the link for that is:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/aperture
However I believe you can have Aperture installed on two machines however only one may be using it at a time.
On the new iMac launch the Mac App Store - Purchased - look for Aperture and download to your new machine.

  • Hello everyone i have macbook air, hello everyone i have macbook air and my startup disc is full i checked everything and and find out that all space is of OTHER and i dont know what is it and what i have to do with that

hello everyone i have macbook air, hello everyone i have macbook air and my startup disc is full i checked everything and and find out that all space is of OTHER and i dont know what is it and what i have to do with that

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive?

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I just got the mid 2011 macbook air and it does not have ilife or iPhoto on it...isnt it supposed to come with it? and if it does then how do i get it on the mac without having to pay for it in the app store?

I just got a macbook air and i thought that it was supposed to come with ilife already installed? But there is not ilife apps...how do i get  it on the laptop without having to buy them all from the app store if it was supposed to come with it?

    From the iPhoto Licence:
    3. Transfer.
    A. Apple Software obtained from the Mac App Store is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware before doing so.
    B. For any preinstalled Apple Software, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party, provided that: the Apple Software is transferred together with your Apple-branded hardware; (ii) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, printed materials and this License; (iii) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; (iv) you have not associated the Apple Software with your Mac App Store account as set forth in Section 2B; and (v) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License.
If the previous owner accepted the preinstalled software (iPhoto, etc) to the AppleID, it cannot be passed on to a new owner. Even if the previous owed would use her or his Applied to install it for you, you would never be able to reinstall it or to update it.
In that case buy your own copies of the software.

  • Can I use a memory stick to back up my MacBook Air and what size do I need?

    i Have a MacBook air , processor 1.3 Ghz Intel core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. Operating on OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1.
it will not open up Safari, it crashed out of Safari with an error message and will not ooen it up now however many times I try.  I was reading Daily Mail on line at the time.  I can get onto the Internet by using Chrome but it feels as if Chrome is in charge of me rather than the other way round.  when I type in an address it just takes me where it wants to go rather than the website I want to to.  I now want to back up my data but left my drive in UK (I am in USA at the moment.) so wondered if I can back all my data (very important data) on to a memory stick so I can wipe my computer and start again.  I have an appointment with a techie at the Apple shop on Saturday but need to back up my data before the appointment, so not sure what to do.
ALso my IPad is very unstable after using the Daily Mail site, it has always seemed to be fine before but this weekend seems to have created problems for both my MacBook Air and IPad Mini...

You'd probably be better served to use a conventional external USB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/
Easier to use, harder to lose and more dependable.

"generally speaking, a HDD (or SSD) is always going to be more reliable than a flash drive. USB flash drives are made to TRANSFER files, not to store them. Still, you get what you pay for, and I have had a few flash drives that have lasted a very long time"

Click on the blue Internet Recovery in nbar's post. That is a link to what computers can run Internet Recovery.
Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.
    OS X Recovery
    OS X Recovery (2)
When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • How can I put OSX 10.7 on a new Macbook Air. Maverick no longer allows "open file in a new window" and I really miss it. At the Apple Store they told me it can't be added to the new OSX 10.10 so I  want to change the OSX on the new Macbook Air and it

I have been using a 2012 Mac pro to do HD video editing. I bought a new portable Macbook Air only to find that Maverick no longer has "open files in a new window" which I use all the time in the very large folders of video clips and royalty-free music. I asked at the Apple Store how I could get this back on the Macbook Air and they said it couldn't be done so I thought I would re-format the HD and install 10.7 on it and was notified by the Macbook Air I can't put 10.7 on that computer. Apple use to give this as an option but now they have gone more to the attitude of "Do it our way or go to ****!" In anger I went out and bought a Dell Laptop and Pinnacle Studio 17 which I have been learning to use. I have been an Apple/Mac user since 1979 and would still rather do my video editing on a Mac. Is there any way that I can force the Macbook Air to let me load in OSX 10.7 where there is still the option to  "open files in a new window" or is there a way to add this to Maverick? The experts at the Madison, WI Couldn't give me any help on this.

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and uncheck the box to open folders in a new tab.

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.
