Macbook air and timecapsule - fan problems (processor?)

it only happens on the back up to time capsule and then MBA goes into overdrive with the fan up around 6200 rpm, istat pro tells me that cpu use is ok, but activity monitor, has a kernel task using 25% processor power.
Sometimes the MBA will just freeze up where no keystrokes or mouse clicks work at all, other time just fan revving up through the back up
I have seen others with similar problems but no definitive answers, is there anything I can do

I have the same problem, I already have a .mac account with two computers registered, I want to add my new Macbook Air, and nothing happens. It apparently starts registering the computer but nothing happens when I use the option register this computer. In addition, all the sync options are in grey. I tried through .mac also and is not working, any idea?
thanks

why would my 11 inch macbook air when connected to a thunderbolt have problems running web based video? and get very hot after about 10 minutes.

What version of the Mac OS are you using? (Look under the Apple menu and select About this Mac). What version of Mac Office are you using?
Office 2008 and Office 2011 are compatible with Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8 (Lion and Mt Lion). Previous versions are not.

Hello i buy  a new macbook air white i5 ivy bridge processor and when i play a game the cpu themperature is 88-100c it is normal?

One thing I should add. While "normal", it doesn't make it preferrrable that you should be always running near the maximum capability of the unit. The new 2012 MBA's are outfitted with CPU's that have a maximum running temp of 115 degrees C. (the 2011's were rated at 100 degrees C.)
At, or near this point, the CPU will shut down the system to safeguard from overheating. Right under this point the system's fan will be running at top speed. Any mechanical device, run at or near it's capability will undergo accelerated wear. Just how much in this situation is unknown. as such, I don't use my MBA as a full-time gaming rig. I try and keep it sensible.
The MBA is not really designed for gaming, but it's competent performance sometimes lures us to use it as such.

  • Hi I just got my new Apple TV and I cant figure out how to connect it with My MacBook Air (11-inch, Late 2010- Processor  1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) OSX Version 10.8

    Hi
Hi I just got my new Apple TV and I cant figure out how to connect it with My MacBook Air (11-inch, Late 2010- Processor  1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) OSX Version 10.8

Are you referring to mirroring or you just unable to set up homesharing.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

  • Can I use a memory stick to back up my MacBook Air and what size do I need?

    i Have a MacBook air , processor 1.3 Ghz Intel core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. Operating on OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1.
it will not open up Safari, it crashed out of Safari with an error message and will not ooen it up now however many times I try.  I was reading Daily Mail on line at the time.  I can get onto the Internet by using Chrome but it feels as if Chrome is in charge of me rather than the other way round.  when I type in an address it just takes me where it wants to go rather than the website I want to to.  I now want to back up my data but left my drive in UK (I am in USA at the moment.) so wondered if I can back all my data (very important data) on to a memory stick so I can wipe my computer and start again.  I have an appointment with a techie at the Apple shop on Saturday but need to back up my data before the appointment, so not sure what to do.
ALso my IPad is very unstable after using the Daily Mail site, it has always seemed to be fine before but this weekend seems to have created problems for both my MacBook Air and IPad Mini...

You'd probably be better served to use a conventional external USB:

Easier to use, harder to lose and more dependable.

  • When should I purchase a MacBook Air, and what upgrades are worth it?

My MacBook Pro (early 2011) is moving as slow as a dinosaur... we are hoping if I get a MacBook Air for school and we only use one account on the Pro (instead of leaving both logged on and switching back and forth), we can get by for a few years without the cost of a new Pro. (I am a grad student. Money problems make it almost tempting to even get a PC at this point.)
With a minor "refresh" rumored in the upcoming days for the MacBook Air, and the 12" Retina coming a few months down the road... and with my next school term starting in May-- when should I get a MacBook Air?
I will be getting the 11" since it is cheapest.
Also, when considering the question of extending the lifetime of the computer (hoping in 4 years it doesn't slow to a crawl like our Pro has), what is more important-- upgraded processor, or RAM?

While it may be that the hardware you have is responsible for the slow performance, it is also possible that third party software incompatibility is the cause.  If you run EtreCheck and post the results here, someone might be able to spot something.

  • Macbook air making weird fan noise

It sounds like the fan is going into over drive, I guess.. The problem occurs when I'm playing games, or when i tilt my computer for some reason.
    2012 Macbook air 4GB ram, i-5 processor.

GPU / CPU intensive activities like playing games will generate heat.
Fans will run at higher rpm to cool down the computer. That is normal.
If the temperature gets too high, the computer will shutdown to protect itself from damage.
    Best.

  • MacBook Air and Minecraft

My son is a fan of Minecraft.  For his joint birthday, Christmas and starting new school present we are thinking of buying him a MacBook Air 11 inch.  For Minecraft and homework word-processing is 128GB enough, or do we need to invest in 256GB?  Thanks for any help, Billy (Harry's dad)

    It's absolutely enough!
I use my Macbook Air (13") for the same tasks & many more!
Although, one problem with Macbook Air and Minecraft would be the RAM and heat issues, so if possible, I would suggest looking into the Macbook Pro, since it doesn't overheat as much.
That said, if you have a fan turned on near the Macbook Air, you should be fine, since you'd have the computer's internal fan + your fan, all cooling the system down.

  • MacBook Air mid-2011 battery problems

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Air, and I recently replaced the battery.  Once the new battery was installed, the computer would operate from battery, but would not recognize the AC adapter and charge the battery.  If I disconnected the battery, then the computer would power from the AC adapter.  After searching this forum, I found that many, many users of practically all types of Mac laptops have similar problems.  It seems that Apple has had this problem in various forms going back at least seven years.  So, I found suggestions to reset the SMC, which I did.  The reset procedure for the MacBook Air is supposed to be the CTRL-Shift-Option + Power button, however this did not work for me.  Apple does not want users opening the case to their products, but I already had the case open to replace the battery, so I tried the alternate procedure of disconnecting the AC adapter and the battery, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds to reset the SMC.  This worked, and I could operate from battery, or plug in the AC adapter to charge the battery.
This was all yesterday at the office.  Then, I took the computer home, and it would no longer charge from the AC adapter.  It would, however charge from my Thunderbolt display.  Today, at the office, I have taken the computer apart again, and tried both SMC reset procedures again.  The only way I can get the computer to charge from the AC adapter is to disconnect the battery.  If I disconnect the battery, then plug in the AC adapter, then plug the battery back in, then the battery will charge.  However, if I disconnect the AC adapter, it will not charge the battery after I re-connect it.  I also have a Thunderbolt display in the office, and its power connecter will charge my computer every time.  I have coworkers with MacBook Airs as well, and my AC adapter will charge every other Mac that I plug into it.  My computer will not charge from any AC adapter unless I follow the procedure above.
So, to summarize, my computer will not charge from the AC adapter unless I disconnect the battery.  I can then connect to the AC adapter and reconnect the battery.  This is not a feasible long-term approach because I would like to keep the case closed.  My computer will charge from two different Thunderbolt displays.  I do not think that there is a problem with my AC adapter, because various other computers will charge from it just fine, and my computer will charge from it under certain circumstances.  I have searched the internet for any other SMC reset procedures and have found none.  I have noticed in my searching that this problem PLAGUES Mac computers of various types.  Does anybody have any other suggestions, or is there anybody on the forum that actually understands the low-level functions of the SMC and how to make this work?  I work on electronics for a living and have access to a lab with everything I would need to perform any kind of diagnostics or surgery on this computer.
Please do not suggest that I take the computer to an Apple Store or an Authorized Apple service shop.  It has been my experience that the people working there have only the most basic understanding of how to fix anything, and even if they do, the cost is such a significant amount that it would simply be more cost-effective to buy a new computer.  This computer is not under warranty, but it is just a little over two years old.  It would seem a shame to toss it out.

However, if I disconnect the AC adapter, it will not charge the battery after I re-connect it.
process elimination is extremely easy.   Forget the thunderbolt connection.
    1. you do not indicate having using another AC charger, regardless of your mention of it working "on 2 diff macs"
    2. its unfortunate you didnt borrow your co-workers charger on YOUR Air, or did you?......, because you did NOT mention same.
The 2 capacitors on the charging block board of the charger can easily blow (one usually).
Borrow another charger , a NEW one and verify.
If same, its your IO board.
There's only a 3-component path to diagnose on a battery
    1. charger
    2. IO board
    3. logic board
    (4. and the battery itself, but you already claim to have just replaced it).
Its not your logic board, however there is an incredibly slim chance of same, almost none however.
Im going to assume the "new" battery is a genuine Apple battery and not an Ebay "cheap" clunker?
this is what on hand diagnostics and a volt meter are for, which cannot be done online.

I just downloaded Adobe XI onto my macbook air and now I cannot save or print any PDF files. Will not let me do Print-Save as PDF, and if i do Save as i get a message saying that the file is corrupted. I had NO PROBLEMS at all doing this many times until i downloaded the new version. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, to no avail. I am super frustrated.
Print>Save as PDF - uses Preview (part of OS X), so Adobe Reader should have no effect on that at all.
As to the "damaged file" error, simply uninstalling the Reader app won't affect it. Do the following:
    Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins
Trash the AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin files
    Mac HD/Applications
    Trash the Adobe Reader app
    [user]/Library/Preferences
    Trash the com.adobe.Reader.plist file
To access the [user]/Library, hold the "Option" key and click "Go" from the FInder menu.
    Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Trash the Reader folder (the whole folder)
    Empty the Trash.
Download the FULL installer here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Quit your browser and reinstall Reader.
Launch it from the Applications folder and accept the license agreement.
You should have no problems downloading PDFs with Safari.
Unfortunately, ANY PDF that says it's damaged.... is. You'll have to trash them.

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
