  • Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore

I bought a 2TB Time Capsule and hooked on a 1TB external hdd to it. All my files and music are on there. My Macbook Air can't find my Airport Time Capsule all of a sudden. It regularly disconnects since they day I got it but since yesterday it can't connect anymore. Internet works fine though. The utility app tells me that it used to be in my network but now isn't anymore. Could it have something to do with adding my iMac to the network? Any thoughts?

Yosemite is unreliable OS.. especially on network side.. it has multiple issues.
I have no idea what Apple thinks they are doing but a fix still has not arrived.
Here is the list of things which help but may not cure it.
A factory reset of the TC is the start.. it is required so you can find it again.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.

  • Can use time capsule wifi but can't find time capsule in finder.

I have a 3TB time capsule that I bought about a month ago. I can use the WIFI but all of a sudden I can't find time capsule in finder. How do I locate it?
Thanks in advance for the help.

It is the Mavericks OS usually.
Try a simple reboot of the TC.. that is often enough. No luck..
Try a full network restart in correct order.. ie modem.. wait 2min.. TC .. wait 2min.. clients.
    No luck..
Manually mount the TC using Go, Connect to Server in Finder.
    Type in AFP://TCname.local or AFP://TCIPaddress
where you use the actual network name in place of the TCname.. ie not the name on the TC.. unless it is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. which I do strongly advise. But its network name which is without spaces and no illegal characters which apple recommends you use.. eg apostrophe.
So Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is not the real network name.
It will become fred_blogs_airport_time_capsule which is a bad name still.
Easier use the IP, eg 10.0.1.1 for TCIPaddress.

I listed the commands.. that is how you manually mount the disk.. follow exactly the commands I gave you.
In finder use top menu, go, connect to server.
    Type in the following.
AFP://TCname or AFP://TCIpaddress (obviously you replace with the actual name or the actual IP address).
    If that fails..
    try
    SMB://TCname
    Here is the screenshot.
tardis4 being the name of my TC.
It should then ask you for your credentials.
And it should remember them in the keychain and be able to then get TM to connect.

My 2013 Macbook Air can't find my HPDeskjet 3054 wireless printer. They worked fine together before I took the MB away from the printer for the summer. I have tried reinstalling the HP software and a bunch of other things that didn't work. The printer shows up as its own wireless network in the list of networks, but then I have to disconnect from my home network and I lose internet connectivity. What's up?

  • MacBook Air can't find my printer

Let me preface this by first stating that I am not technically savvy.  Turning a computer on and off is about it for me. So I just purchased the HP 6835, took it out of the box and have been attempting to set it up.  Everything appears to work fine by my Macbook Air can't find the printer.  I've been trying to get this to find it for hours, reading almost everything. I then looked at the box it came in and it reads on the box that this Printer Supports OSX v10.9 Mavericks. My Macbook Air is running OSX Yosemite v10.10.3, is this why my Macbook can't locate the printer?   If this is not the answer, any ideas would be great.   Thanks, David

  • MacBook Air and problems with Time Capsule in 5GHz Radio Mode

We have our Time Capsule configured to 802.11n only (5 GHz). We've done this to work more efficiently in a particularly noisy wireless area. The problem is that the MacBook Air can't maintain a connection to it and when it loses the connection, the wireless interface seems to disappear from the Mac altogether - the wireless status indicator just shows an empty cone. The only solution is a restart. Sometimes it loses the connection after a couple of hours, sometimes within minutes, though it always goes eventually. All other machines on the network are fine, and switching the Time Capsule to 802.11n only (2.4 GHz) solves the problem, though there's a lot of noise at that frequency and our network performance as a whole suffers.
I know there's similar threads around dealing with the MBA and wireless issues (I've tried all the solutions vaguely related, e.g. deleting and recreating the wireless interface), though none that deal with this specific problem, which I'm convinced is caused by the radio mode of the Time Capsule.
All software / firmware is the latest:
MacBook Air 10.5.2 Wireless Card Firmware Veriosn Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.5)
    Time Capsule Version 7.3.1
I was hoping the recent firmware updates would sort this... any one else running a Time Capsule in 5GHz mode with a MacBook Air?

I'm running my TC in 5ghz mode with my MBA. My original problem was the lack of signal strength coming from my AEBS caused the MBA to have a slow connection. There are a number of pipes in the wall that separates the two rooms where my MBA lives and the AEBS is.
So, I hard wired the TC to the AEBS and placed the TC in the room where my MBA lives most of the time. Now that the signal strength is really good I'm not having any issues.

  • Airport Utility can't find Time Capsule but wireless is fine

    Hi
I have my Time Capsule connected via cable to my NetGear Modem/Router and have wireless enabled on the Time Capsule.
I never have any problems with the actual wireless connections to the internet via any of our Macs or PCs in the house, but on a fairly regular basis, the AirPort Utility comes up and tells me 'AirPort Utility was unable to find any apple wireless devices. Please make sure the Apple wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again.'
Wireless access continues to work just fine when this happens, but I just can't get to the Time Capsule with the Airport Utility. Un-plugging and re-plugging the Time Capsule makes it appear in the Airport Utility again, and it's fine usually for a few hours or most of the day, but then quite often I will open Airport Utility again later in the day and it again will not be able to find the Time Capsule again.
I have tried firmware 7.3.1 and 7.3 but it didn't make any difference.
So I wonder if anyone might have any suggestions as to why Airport Utility would not be able to find the Time Capsule yet the same Mac from which I am trying is quite happily connected wirelessly and surfing the web.
    Thanks in anticipation!
    Ken

Wow it took me awhile to find this thread.
    1047 views. I guess I'm not alone.
Every few days my macbook pro quits recognizing the Time Capsule even
though it works fine for wireless internet.
Airport Utility doesn't see it either. Shared disk access, gone.
I found I can get things working again over wireless if I plug the computer
into the time capsule with a cable. When I plug it in the time capsule instantly
appears on the list of available backup devices in time machine settings.
If I do a backup and then disconnect the cable backup continues to work for
awhile. Then I need to connect again.
    Pretty silly bug.
When it works time machine and time capsule are great. We've used it to
    recover data very easily.
Wish the connection wasn't so flakey though.

  • HT1218 Macbook Air can't find my Time Capsule!?!

Bought a new macbook air, it can't find my time capsule for some reason utilizing airport utility.  It was originally set up with another macbook almost three years ago.  Anyone know why this is happening?  I want to set it up to back up my files (macbook air) as well as take advantage of the extra storage/hard drive space for photos and music, etc...

Nevermind, I figured it out myself.  I had a WiFi network and a guest WiFi network.  The timecapsule was on one and my mac on the other.  Once I adjusted them to be the same it fixed the problem.  Thanks for all your help...Not!

  • Can I backup my external SD Card(on my Macbook Air) to my Airport/Time Capsule

Just purchased Airport and was successful setting up Time Capsule to back up my Mac Air and Mac desktop....Regarding my Macbook Air, I had to use the external port and keep a 128GB SD card there for my iTunes and iPhoto library to save space...When I try to select it to be excluded in the Time Capsule preferences window, it will not allow me to highlight it...I can see it...I just can't select it..Help?

When I try to select it to be excluded in the Time Capsule preferences window, it will not allow me to highlight it...I can see it...I just can't select it.
This happens when a drive is not formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Perhaps you forgot to format the drive when it was new before you added data?
Time Machine will only back up a drive that is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+.

  • I just purchased two Macbook Air along with two Time Capsule (2TB) for my kids. Meanwhile I use a sagemcom ADLS modem/router for home use. Can I connect both Time Capsule and laptop which will allow both laptop to have their own backup system?

want both of the computers to have their own independent time capsule.
I assume that you are asking about using the Time Capsules for Time Machine backups here, correct?
If yes, both MBAs will be able to select the specific Time Capsule that they will use for backups, so "point" MBA1 to Time Capsule 1 and MBA2 to Time Capsule 2.
Since you will have plenty of available backup space if you use two Time Capsules, you might want to consider having each MBA back up to both Time Capsule 1 and Time Capsule 2.
This way, if one Time Capsule fails, you will still have a complete set of backups for both MBAs.

  • Time capsule green light - airport utility can't find time capsule

Hi guys, well here is my story. I struggled to get the TC to connect to my wireless network which is already being provided by a motorola wireless modem. I read somewhere that although 7.3.1 lists support for WEP it doesn't actually support it, so I changed all my security to WPA. Then I got the TC online and all was good, except for the slow transfer times, even from a USB HD that was plugged direct into the TC. So I then plugged in the TC via ethernet and moved the huge amounts of files in much faster succession. Now it's come time to make the TC connect wirelessly again. It just won't do it if I do auto setup, so I do a manual set up. I enter my WPA passwords, I set the TC to bridge mode and low and behold after restart the light on the TC goes green. Hooray!!! Then I go into finder but I can't see the time capsule, so I go to airport utility, it can no longer find the TC it just changed the settings on, that made it connect to the network. Airport utility claims there are no app;e wireless devices to be found...
Please help, how do I discover my TC?
Should I have changed the IPv6 to tunnel or node?
Also, when I click advanced in wireless the only option I see is for interference robustness, nothing about 2.4 or 5ghz. Where can I change this?
Any help would be great, cheers.

I'm having a similar issue, but only sporadically. My TC is plugged directly into my cable modem...it is the only wireless router in the system. The latest firmware updates are installed, and my MacBook Pro has 10.5.2 (installed via the combo update). Another Macbook and a mac mini, both with 10.4, also accesses the wireless network.
Here's an example of TIme Capsule drop-out: this morning when I woke my Macbook Pro, it couldn't find the network. TC had a green light, so I opened Airport Utility. It couldn't find the TC. I unplugged the TC and waited for it to reboot. After it restarted, the wireless network connected just fine, but the TC itself didn't appear in the finder window. I opened Airport Utility again, and the TC appeared, but with a yellow dot next to it. The light on the TC itself was green. I tried to rescan the port, and the TC disappeared again. Wireless network was still working, though. A few minuted later, I rescanned again and the TC appeared. I clicked on Manual setup, and Airport scanned again and couldn't find the TC. I left it in frustration, and came back two hours later. Voila, the TC appears in the finder window and Airport has no problem accessing it.
So what the heck? I'm willing to wipe it and start over, but I just installed the thing. All I've done is set up time machine, run the firmware update, plugged in a usb hub with a couple of shared drives and a printer (which doesn't print more than a couple of pages at a time before it freezes, but that's an issue for another post).
Any thoughts and suggestion greatly appreciated!

  • Macbook Air can not find my wifi. It detects all the neighbouring ones but can not find mine.

Hi. I have a new (5months old) Macbook Air that used to work fine. Until now...
I went for a 2 months trip and left my macbook at home, so it was not is use for the past 2 months. When I turned it on a couple of days ago, the date and time was messed up (automatic setting showed me 01.01.2012.) and the bigger issue, it can not find my wifi network. It detects all the neighbouring networks but mine. I have tried setting up a new network, troubleshooting, etc, but nothing has worked. My iPhone and my other laptop (hp) can find the wifi without any problem. The network settings have not changed either...
Any idea how to solve this?
    Many thanks!

    Hi,
    thanks for your reply.
The problem is, I can't even open the network preference pane, as it is not responding.
Earlier I wanted to log into iCloud - it started loading and now it is completely 'frozen'. I can not close it, I can not quit system preferences and I also can not restart my macbook (it won't let me until I quit system preferences).
I am sure the solution is very easy, but I have no idea what to do
Many thanks for your help in advance!

  • New MacBook Pro can't find time machine

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro and I want to restore my system from a time machine back up located on a Time Capsule.  I am attempting to do this using the Set-Up Assistant.  The process is as follows.  I select from Time Machine or other disk and click continue.  On the Select the Source screen, my Time Capsule shows up.  I click continue and on the next screen the new MBP can not find a source as there is nothing listed in the source box.  It continues to search but will not find my time capsule.  When I click the Back button, I see my Time Capsule appear for an instant before it shifts back to the previous screen.  My MBP is connected to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable and there is web access using that cable.
I don't know what to do.  Any suggestions will be great.  Thanks.

You don't want to do that by copying.
Your best bet, by far, is to use Setup Assistant.  If your Mac is running Snow Leopard, see Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard.
If it came with Lion, it's a bit different: Using Setup Assistant on Lion
