MacBook Air cannot find my preffered network (Wi-Fi) at home

Since a few months my MacBook Air does not detect the wireless network at home. At the same time my iPhone, iPad, older MacBook Pro and my wife's Dell laptop all detect and connect to this wireless network at home. It also worked on my MacBook Air when I first bought it. I have now upgraded to OS X 10.7.5 and the problem still exists and the same problem existed under 10.7.4.
I have tried rebooting the MacBook Air, the wireless router. I also deleted the network name from the advanced settings under networking. However none of these actions have worked.

Solved by changing my router from non-Apple to Apple Airport Express

  • New MacBook Air: questions about how to network (AirPlay, Time Capsule, Apple TV, etc)

    Hi guys,
I am the new owner of a MacBook Air 13" and I've decided to upgrade my home network. Can one of you please help me identify the additional products I need to purchase in order to achieve my desired goals?
Here is what I want to do:
    * I want to have a large, local, networked hard disk where I can store thousands of photos (iPhoto library) - looks like time capsule or possibly Airport Extreme would be good here
    * I want to access this iPhoto library from my MBA, MBP, and iPad 2. The photos will not be stored locally on any of these devices. Is this possible, and would I experience significant slowness due to this setup? Basically i want a local cloud with massive storage.
    * I could also be tempted to store my iPhoto library in Dropbox but I wonder if the laptops etc would support this? Also this much storage could get pricey.
    * I would like to stream music from services like Pandora and Spotify to my home theater system, which has all kinds of optical / coponent connections (Denon receiver). Ideally I'd like to do this from any of my devices including iPad and even iPhone. I do not use iTunes.
    * I would like to stream content from my devices to my TV including photos and videos, as well as basic mirroring functionality. Given I currently stream Netflix etc through Xbox this is the least important of all my desires. My tv has things like hdmi connections.
So guys do you think I can do this? Particularly the iPhoto part. Im really looking for a seamless experience in accessing my photos from any laptop.
Any tips on exactly what products I need to buy would be greatly appreciated.

    Pappasbike, welcome to the discussions!
"Now my confusion comes from reading about setting the TC in bridge mode."
"The TC is only a foot or two way from the AEBS"
Last item first....if the TC is this close, it might make more sense to connect the two devices together with an ethernet cable. (Always use ethernet connections when possible for faster speeds and more reliable connections.) You would connect one end of the ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the Extreme and the other to the WAN port on the Time Capsule.
Bridge Mode....You only want one router doing DHCP and NAT and that is being done by the Extreme according to your post. Since the Time Capsule is also a router, you would want to configure it in Bridge Mode so that you will avoid IP conflicts and double NAT errors on your network. Do this as follows:
Open Airport Utility and click on Manual Setup for the Time Capsule.
Click on the Internet icon at the top of the pane.
Now look for the "Connection Sharing" setting near the bottom of the pane. Select "Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to save your new settings.

  • Problem - new MacBook Air cannot see external HD

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help, as I have seen similar questions in the forums, but not with an answer that helps me solve my problem.
Ok, I have a new MacBook Air running Lion (bought last year), a MacBook Pro running Leopard which is approx 4 years old and a Windows Laptop.  I use the MacBook Air for Work and when travelling (weekly with work), the MacBook Pro for home and managing my other apple devices (iPad/iPhone etc..).  I no longer use the PC, but there are loads of files both work and home, I wish to keep on an external HD for use with both Apple Laptops.
So, the external HD used to work with the MacBook Air when I first bought it (a couple of weeks ago) and formatted it with the MacBook Air, but it couldn't be seen or used with the Windows PC.  When I formatted it with the Windows PC, I could use it with the MacBook Air but could not write to the disk.
So I have now partitioned and formatted it with the MacBook Pro running Lion, but now the MacBook Air cannot even see the disk in Disk Utility.
My MacBook Air otherwise runs absolutely fine with no problems, and the MacBook Air is a critical piece of kit that I use on a daily basis to do my job.  As such, I have no appetite for deleting any drivers etc... from the MacBook Air as it could originally see the disk and I do not want to make a mistake and cause myself problems.
So the question is, how on earth do I get the MacBook Air to see the drive again in Disk Utility? So I can do the partitioning and formatting there, this drive is of no use if can only be seen by the MacBook Pro.  The drive is a portable USB powered Toshiba 1TB disk Part Number: HDTB110EK3BA.
Am going to wait for some suggestions, my next thought is to erase everything using the windows PC assuming it can see it, and then see if the Mac Book Air laptop can see it in Disk Utility... no other options left really.
I hope someone can help, otherwise I may be off to buy a new disk and could hit the same problems again!
    Thanks
    Alex.

Toshiba Acknowledges MacBook Woes in Canvio USB 3.0 Hard Drives
By Christopher Price on December 27, 2011
Following tests conducted by PhoneNews.com, Toshiba has acknowledged an issue affecting their Canvio USB 3.0 hard drives. The issue prevents current-generation MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models from properly connecting and powering up the drives.
Read more to see our findings, and the resulting (ongoing) investigation by Toshiba.
We began our tests based on tips from readers like you, and went out and purchased five (yes, five) Canvio USB 3.0 drives, along with a brand new 2011 MacBook Air.
Drive problems happened immediately, and were relatively isolated to the MacBook Air. Of all the systems we tested on, we were only able to reproduce issues on a Sony VAIO laptop late in our testing, as well as a current-gen MacBook Pro.
Essentially, the drives failed to mount, and in most tests never even spun up on these systems.
The Canvio USB 3.0 hard drives have sat under many people’s Christmas trees, as they were hot sellers during Black Friday. Retailers like Office Depot slashed prices on the slim, 2.5-inch drives down to $79 for a 1TB hard drive. With coupons, Radio Shack was selling the 500GB model for a mere $39.
Canvio USB 3.0 drives tout on the box compatibility with USB 2.0 systems, including both Mac and PC. The advantage of a Canvio USB 3.0 hard drive for a MacBook owner lies in Thunderbolt. Purchasing such a drive today can achieve USB 3.0 speeds with upcoming Thunderbolt-to-USB 3.0 adapters. USB 3.0 mass storage was designed to be fully backwards compatible with USB 2.0.
To get to the bottom of the problem, we probed the five Canvio drives purchased, in an effort to better understand the issue. And, we were able to isolate the problem; the Canvio USB 3.0 drives draw more power than the USB standard permits. The drives were drawing, upon connection, slightly more than the five watts that the spec allows. And, the new MacBooks appear to promptly shut the device down because of this.
Why? Well, Apple can assert that this is to protect the MacBook Air/Pro from a malfunctioning USB device. However, the answer really lies in tablets. Apple allows iPad and MacBook to perform a hardware handshake, which then allows Apple devices to draw 10 watts from the USB port. This is why you can charge an iPad directly on a Mac, but not on a PC.
Apple does not want to allow rival tablet manufacturers (Android) to have the same access to Apple’s USB port. Hence, any device (like a tablet) that wants to draw even slightly more than five watts, is shut off from communicating with the Mac. We affirmed this by testing a powered USB hub. With a powered hub connected to the hard drive, and the hub connected to the MacBook, the drive instantly came to life, and worked without issue.
This creates a bit of an odd situation; Toshiba is technically in the wrong for making drives that technically breach USB specifications… but Apple seems to be the only manufacturer to enforce this aspect (as well as breach it with their own devices).
Toshiba, to its credit, has owned up to our issue, right down to our suggestion to them that a powered hub works around the issue. Quoting an official statement in response to our research:
Toshiba DPD has identified an isolated USB connectivity issue between the Canvio USB 3.0 drive and currently shipping MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops. The issue involves the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air being unable to recognize the Canvio USB 3.0 drive when connected directly to the laptop USB 2.0 port. Toshiba is actively working to remedy this USB connectivity issue. In the interim, Toshiba recommends MacBook Pro and MacBook Air users employ a powered USB hub to connect their Canvio USB 3.0 drives.
We have asked Toshiba if they intend to inform retailers to accept returns for affected drives, or if they will offer some form of refund program in the interim. Retailers such as Office Depot do not permit refunds on opened technology items, including Canvio drives. Toshiba has said are looking into that aspect of this problem, and will get back to us shortly.
In all, we spent a few hundred on hard drives, and confirmed the issue. Unfortunately, because it is a power drain concern, Toshiba will likely have to offer an exchange program to fix it. We seriously doubt that this can be fixed at the firmware level. Theoretically, it’s possible a USB cable replacement might be able to mitigate this issue however, so there is hope that Toshiba won’t have to recall a bazillion hard drives.
Update: As a follow-up, Toshiba has informed us that they have completed their investigation, and will replace affected drives.

  • My macbook air cannot sync with my office microsoft exchange 2010 mail server

My macbook air cannot sync with my office microsoft exchange 2010 mail server.
It used to work perfectly, and then I lost connection and was never able to establish one. I re-istalled my e-mail account several times, no success.

I am sure all of you got your email issues sorted out by now but i was having trouble settings up exchange email on my Iphone 5S, and the problem i found was to go to settings, icloud, then log into icloud with your apple id first (before setting up the exchange email).  Once i logged into my icloud account on my Phone 5S, the exchange server email starting working and synching right away.
to confirm this worked, i even deleted my email account and deleted my Icloud accounts both from my iphone was able to simulated the same exact problem (exchange server would not sync with my Iphone 5S) until i logged back into my Icloud account on my 5S.
Again once i logged into Icloud, the exchange server issues went completely away.
Just wanted to post this so anyone else having the issue could see.

  • MacBook Air - Cannot connect to Ethernet Computers on WiFi Network

I just bought a new MacBook Air (11 inch) less than a week ago. Love it, its great. I am however having an issue with connecting it to computers on the same network, but only if those computers are connected to the network via ethernet (while the Air is on wifi).
I have an older MacBook (2.2Ghz running 10.7.2 also) with no issues connecting to other computers over the wifi if they are on ethernet. My old MacBook and the Air can also communicate no problem over wifi, but if I connect my old MacBook to the ethernet connection I cannot ping it from the Air.
The reason why this is important is because I am trying to hook the Air up to a buffallo linkstation to setup TimeMachine like I have it set up on my old MacBook.
I am using a Buffallo WZR2-G300N Router as my gateway and access point (I also have a D-Link switch, but I have by-passed that to troubleshoot the issue). Firmware is up to date.
The Air also has no problem connecting to the internets.
Any ideas oh Apple Support Community?? Many thanks in advance.

Try using Finder > Go > Connect to Server > smb://ipaddress. If you can connect this way, then good. I'll have more to say later. Just try to get this working for now.
    Before trying to connect:
    On the XP machine.
    1. Right-click on a folder to share (e.g., My Documents), chose Sharing, and select both Sharing Options.
    2. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
See how this part goes. I can't remember where some things are in XP, but you may have to enable Network Discovery somewhere.
    On the Vista machine.
    1. Go > Computer > Users > User; right click on the User folder, and choose the settings that give Everyone—both Read/Write permissions.
    2. Go Control Panel > Network and Sharing Options > Turn on network discovery, Turn on file and printer sharing, Turn off public folder sharing , and Turn off password protected sharing (unless sharing won’t occur without turning it on).
    2. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
See how this part goes too. I can't remember some of the detail in Vista.
    On the Sno machine,
    1. Go System Preferences > Sharing > Check File sharing > Go Options > Enable SMB sharing.
    2. Go System Preferences > Network > Select Airport or Ethernet depending on what you are going to be using. I am assuming you will be using wireless below. Let me know if not true.
    3. Having selected Airport, select ask to join new networks and show Airport status in menu bar.
    4. Click advanced > click remember networks this computer has joined > Click Wins > Enter the ip address of your Win7 machine in the WINS server box > Enter the Win7's workgroup name in the workbook box unless it already is there (look in the drop down menu too). In all likelihood the name is workgroup, but check on the Win7 machine.
    5. Restart

  • Macbook Air cannot see Wifi but iPhone, iPad, and boot camp Widnows can

I just started living in an apartment with a shared wifi router. I have no control over this router and i'm fine with that since I'm just with my girlfriend here and don't have a lot of other uses for it other than simply downloading stuff and using a computer.
The problem is that literally every device I have (iPad, iPhone) can see and connect to the wireless network.  Oddly, my Macbook Air 2013 cannot see this network.  Some days I am actually able to connect and it works fine but then it'll just disappear and I cannot find it again.  I have bootcamp installed on the Macbook Air and when I switch to Windows I can see the network and can connect with no problems.
I don't understand why the Mac OS side of things fails to even see the network when this is one of the devices with probably the most powerful network card considering it's 2013 and even has the ability to connect to ac wireless signals.
Any suggestions? I would prefer to use my Mac OS side of things rather than Windows due to battery life at least, among other obvious things.

    I FIXED IT!!!!
I reset my airport express (for the umpteenth time) but this time I did a manual setup instead of going through the assistant.  Changed the Channel to 10 (I am surrounded by other wifi networks using 1 and 11, so I just picked anything but 1 or 11) and configured it for 802.11g only (it defaults to b/g on the setup assistant).
So far, no problems, and both MBA and MBP connect.
I would guess this has started to happen recently due to one or both of
    - recent Lion updates
    - additional wifi networks popping up in my apartment building causing some kind of interference
    That's my layman conclusion anyway.
Thanks for all your help!  I feel like a heavy weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

  • MacBook Air cannot print on Canon MF8450

We bought a Canon MF8550 for a printer in a small local network which contains a new MacBook Pro and a new MacBook Air. Boths Macs run under OS X 10.6.7. Installing the printer on the Pro worked perfectly fine. We could use every feature and have no problems at all. So we installed the printer in the same manner on the MacBook Air: The installation ran without any problems. I used the Line Printer Daemon with the correct IP adress. For the driver I chosed the MF8400 series and everything during the installation worked fine.
After that I tried to print but the job is stopped immediately and remains in the local printer queue. The printer is set to pause and does nothing at all.
Accessing the printer by its IP adress can be done successfully. So I see it in the network and can get access to it by the user interface of Canon. So I checked the printer queue on the Canon directly but I could not see my job and the printer status is displaying no problems.
    What I did so far:
I uninstalled the whole printer driver (according to the manual of Canon so I deleted
    + jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist
+ the whole Canon folder and
    + CNTDMF8400ZDE.ppd.gz
After uninstalling I emptied the trash and restarted the Mac..
I installed the actual 2.24 version of the Canon URF printer driver from the Canon site which is of mid of April and nothing changed at all - the perfectly same behavior.
With that I checked possible hardware issues especially the obvious single difference to the MacBook Pro environment:
For all tests above I used the printer with the USB ethernet adapter. So to check if here is the origin I installed the printer using Airport - but with the same result - the printer is set to pause by the URFII
When the printer is connected directly to the MacBook AIr by USB it works without any problems.
The support of Canon cannot reproduce this problem so they blame the OS.
    Does anybody have an idea
    thx

To all who'll face the same problem:
Sometimes it is easier than one can imagine:
With a right mouse click on the printer dialog box one can reset the whole printer system. After that I reinstalled the printer and...
    it works!!
Thx to all who had a view.

  • MacBook Air cannot pair with iphone

    Hi,
Once I've configured my MacBook to use tethering with iphone 3GS via Bluetooth. Suddenly it stopped to work. Then I tried to pair two devices again, but simply I cannot.
I open Bluetooth assistant which finds my iPhone, click to connect, then code appears both on MacBook and iPhone, click to confirm, wait 10-15 seconds and get the message on iPhone that it cannot pair with MacBook Air, and on MacBook I receive and error. Tried restarting, turning tethering on and off, etc - no effect.
I thought that maybe there is something wrong with iPhone s/w, but today I checked with brand new iPhone 4 with 4.0.2 SW - result is exactly the same.
Wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse works on that machine without any problem....
    Any clue?
    Krzysztof

yes, but it does not refer to iPhone, while problem is clearly related with MacBook - if I could pair another iPhone without problem, then the problem would be within one particular iPhone, wouldn't be?
