Macbook Air Disconnecting Randomly from Wifi

Recently, about a week or two ago, I began noticing that while on WiFi my Air would just disconnect from the internet. The four bars would still show, the mac would still be working, but it would be just long enough to disconnect me from everything I was doing forcing restarts. After I got extremely fed up with this, I tried my last resort - a PRAM reset. This fixed it... for 2 days. Now it's happening again, about once every five minutes. Anyone else experiencing this?

Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait for few  minutes.
Connect the router back to to the wall.
Power the router back on. Wait  until all lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
Restart the computer.
Start up in Safe Mode.

Can my mid 2011 macbook air be upgraded to wifi 802.11ac? I am considering replacing my 802.11n router with the 802.11ac time capsule. Will this effect my download speed on my 802.11n macbook air (mid 2011)? can it be upgraded?

No, you cannot change the Wi-Fi hardware in your Mac. The Time Capsule is still worth it due to its ability to make backups of your Mac via Time Machine.

If I take my MacBook Air to Italy from the US, will I need a voltage converter?

No. All you will need is a Plug Adaptor for the mains power outlets...
    Line voltage: 100-240V AC
    Frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz

How do I download my Microsoft office on to my MacBook Air using airdrop from my iMac? Please help

Out of curiosity, does Microsoft's licensing allow for such an install and/or more than one install? I just did a cursory check on their licensing and found that most are only licensed for one computer unless you buy a special key card.
I had a different app once that was only allowed on one computer; it would not install on the other Mac. You may therefore encounter problems - since you must have an install CD, why not use that if you have the key card allowing you to install it on more than one?

  • Does the macbook air get hot from use?

I am considering purchasing a Macbook Air.  I have had problems with notebook PC's in the past getting very hot.
Does the Macbook Air get hot from use?

Yes, well, virtually every computer has a fan in it; many fail their mission.
Now that you mention it, I saw no grill or mesh anywhere when I looked at the MBA at the Apple Store.  Is it where the lid meets the body?  I didn't see speakers, either, although I heard music.

  • Mid 2012 MacBook Air Troubles (Random Reboots & No Camera)

Hello, I'm hoping somebody can help me out. I have a mid 2012 Apple MacBook air that I am having problems with. Ever since I bought this laptop from my friend, it has randomly rebooted during sleep mode, and the FaceTime camera has not worked. I was told that water has been spilled on it at one point, but I have went over the entire computer and do not see any sort of damage. Because I was not having any luck getting it to quit the rebooting, and because the camera would not work, I purchased a replacement motherboard and battery.
The new parts arrived today, and I quickly installed them. I was instantly having the same exact problems. The computer will still reboot when I close the lid to put it in sleep mode. It instantly starts rebooting after about 2 to 3 minutes. And it will continue to reboot over and over until I reopen the lid. In addition the camera is still not detected, and I have double checked under the system properties that it is not showing up under the USB tab. I have cleared the PRAM & SMC, still no changes. As a last ditch effort, I decided to reinstall OSX 10.9 Mavericks as a fresh install. No go...
Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get this thing running properly? I bought it because I wanted to use it for some home-video editing, and in its current condition I don't feel that it is trustworthy. The only things left that I can replace, would be the display or the thunderbolt daughterboard. I already previously had replaced the SSD with a larger 256 GB, and I tried swapping out the wifi card as well. I'm banging my head against the wall here, and really want to be able to use this computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Unless you get the answer you need here, I would contact Apple MacBook Air Support or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
Apple Service Technicians have access to all special tools, test equipment, parts, and proprietary data needed for efficient repairs.  If cost is your issue, you can ask for an estimate before they proceed with any needed repairs.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My iPhone 5 connects to wifi but shows one bar on the wifi signal meter but my iPad2 and Macbook Air both show full wifi bars when all three are side by side next to my apple router. Do I have an antenna problem with my iPhone 5?

It appears that my iPhone 5 has a wifi signal reception issue. I only show one bar on the wifi signal meter even when I an next to the router.  Both my Macbook Air and my iPad2 show full wifi signals at the same time.  Rebooting the Apple router and each device results in the same meter readings.

Does this occur with any Wi-Fi connection? Or only a specific one?
If it occurs with any Wi-Fi connection, take it to Apple.
If it is only occurring with a specific Wi-Fi connection, it is an issue with that Wi-Fi connection.
Try the following, it may help:
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Forget the Wi-Fi connection on the iPhone then reconnect.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).

  • Why is my MacBook Air slow on any WiFi network?

I have been having a strange issue with my 2013 11" MacBook Air (Mavericks 10.9.2).  It has seemed very pokey on internet lately.  The past couple of weeks in some places I have not been able to get online via wifi, including GOGO on Delta, which has never been a problem (iPad and iPhone got on right away).  So back to my house, which is on a Time Warner 30Mbps cable internet service. A browser speed test is only showing 1-3Mbps, which is on a Time Warner 30Mbps internet service.  I am getting terrible speeds as I mentioned.  Today I reset the modem and my airport extreme.  Then I took a MacBook Pro I have and went direct into modem with ethernet cable and speed went into the low 50Mbps!!!!!  So then I took the same MacBook Pro and went back to wifi, speed test still very strong - 30Mbps or better.  But back to my MacBook Air, and speed test only 1-3Mbps.  I also tried speed test on my iPhone, and it also shows 20-30Mbps.  So now I am convinced something is weird in my MacBook Air - the network and airport extreme don’t seem to be the problem.  I dont know what else to do on the MacBook Air to try and resolve this issue.  Can anyone give me any ideas?  I tried zapping the PRAM, still no help.  Thanks for any input or ideas!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Macbook air keeps dropping home wifi

My macbook air keeps dropping my home wifi service, I get a message telling me there is no internet service.  I still have a PC and it connects to internet service even when my mac cannot so it has nothing to do with the internet provider.  I have to delete, reinstall my internet connection a couple of times to try and get it back up and running.  I would appreciate any help with this problem!

I got my MacBook Air in December and had the same problem.  It was so frustrating I became enraged on more than one occassion--why were my family's PCs, iPads, iPod Touch, Playstation 3, etc. getting reliable (if sometimes slow) WiFi access, and my brand new, expensive Mac was having so many issues, like being unable to connect to the Internet in the first place?  !@%$#&^&%%@!
After combing the Internet and trying dozens of "fixes" that fixed nothing, I called Apple support, which advised me that I didn't need to change my router (which is only about 2 years old) but should change my router's security from WEP to WPA2.  I did, and it worked...sorta.  It was better, but I still had the same problems several times a day (as opposed to several times an hour).
Then, two days ago, I was sitting in the parking lot of the college where my husband and I work, and BAM the Internet was blazing fast on my MacBook Air.  I couldn't believe how fast it was.  That convinced me that the machine was fine and that it was "my Internet at home" (I'm not a tech person) that was the problem.
So I went out and bought an Airport Extreme router (about $180), brought it home, set it up in about 10 minutes (with our 15 wireless devices attached to the network--4 PCs, 1 Mac, 2 iPod Touches, 2 iPads, a 3DS, 2 Kindles, a wireless printer, a PS3, and a Wii).  My MacBook Air has been fan-freaking-tastic ever since (2 days now).  I used to avoid certain Web sites b/c I knew they would simply not load or load like crap, but now I can have them all open at once.
I know it's annoying to have to spend so much money to solve this problem, but I'm so happy we did.  All our other devices are running faster, too.  All I can say is that upgrading the router to the Airport Extreme solved my MacBook Air's hideous Internet issues in my home, at least--who knows what will happen if I have to travel and am stuck in a hotel room trying to do work?  Fortunately, I don't travel that often, so I'll jump off that bridge when I come to it.

  • 11.6" MacBook Air Slow Unreliable 5GHz Wifi on the Lap!

My wife and I just got new MacBook Airs, a loaded 11.6" for her, 13.3" for me (1.6 GHz 4GB/128GB and 2.13 GHz 4GB/256GB). We connect via a 45 Mbit/s download, 35 Mbit/s upload fiber connection with a Linksys WRT610N simultaneous dual-band wireless access point. My 13.3" Air works wonderfully in all respects, amazingly snappy at every task and fast 45/35 tested bandwidth via 5GHz Wireless N.
My wife's 11.6" Air, when connected to the 5 GHz band via Wireless N, tests very well when sitting on a table. But put it on your lap, and the connection becomes extremely erratic, with intermittent loss of connection when connected via LogMeIn, and download bandwidth tested at 1-10 Mbit/s only (though 10-20 Mbit/s upload). Connected at 2.4 GHz, it does fine at 45/35 bandwidth.
This is not acceptable, as the 5 GHz band is less crowded and therefore less prone to interference. Anyone else notice this phenomenon?
    David

  • Mid-2011 Macbook Air with very slow wifi yet with OSX 10.9.1

Yes, I am opening yet another topic on this pretty old issue because I am too confused with all that I have read so far (as also have not found a recent case similar to mine).
    I have a mid-2011 Macbook Air i5 13'.
My home wireless network works just fine and smooth with a Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo and a humble Acer Aspire One D270 netbook.
With my Macbook Air, connection is useless. If I want to search something on Google, I'd better off buying myself an air ticket and visiting their HQs to ask them personally to do the search.
I have tried some "workarounds" with no success. Sometimes the internet seems to get a bit better (I said *a bit*), but nothing even slightly near what I get with my other two computers.
    Where should I begin from?

Please take all the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it (not applicable to OS X 10.9 or later.)
    Step 4
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
