MacBook Air EtreCheck Cleanup Needs

I've seen many recomendations to run EtreCheck to see what might be slowing you down or causing restarts.  So, I ran it, cleaned what looked out of place, restarted, dumped trash, ran and repeat and I think I am to a good point of asking for a bit of help now.
Will post my results below but two items I for sure need assistance on (please point out other concerns in hardware or software):
1. can't locate the com.spotify.webhelper.plist to delete it
2. OLD APPLICATIONS - I am running the legit office suite with weekley updats so totaly confused why it is listed as a problem.
Results of EtreCheck:

  • HT3503 i have a macbook air and I need to connect my firewire device to it. Where can I find the correct adapter?

I am trying to connect my presonus firebox that uses firewire to my new macbook air, but I need an adapter. If anybody knows of one please help.

@Christoph: Um, no there aren't. The only thing I know of is the Belkin TB hub, which is $300 & way more complicated (& bigger) than just an adaptor.

If anyone knows of something with TB in and simply one or two FW ports out, that would be extremely useful for this audio guy.

Call AppleCare and ask them to send you a replacement set. They will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • I just ordered a macbook air today and need to know if the 128gb SSD is enough space. I presently have a macbook pro and am using only 30gb hard drive space so, the apple rep said 128 is enough as I do not load much pictures or gaming etc. Also is i5 ok.

Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.
Perfect 2TB HD, very slim, the "little giant"   made by Toshiba (have several of these) $119

  • If I own a desktop iMac and a laptop MacBook Air, do I need to purchase Lion for each of them?

If I own a desktop iMac and a MacBook Air, do I need to purchase Lion for each of them?

No. You can install Lion on all machines under your control. BTW, to avoid wasting bandwidth, time, and electricity, when you first DL Lion, don't install it, quit the installer, and copy the Install Mac OS X Lion.app which is DL'd to /Applications to another location. The stupid, inane installer deletes itself as part of its installation process. Then, copy the saved version to the other machines. Do note that if you move the installer app from /Applications, you can install it, and it won't be deleted.

  • Does my Macbook Air 13 inch need to be replaced?

Does my Macbook Air 13 inch need to be replaced if it only gets 5 1/2 hours of battery (by just surfing the web) and I just purchased it?
The only reason I got the 13 inch was because it had a better battery life over the 11. I can't imagine the 11 inch getting 3 hours or somethings that's ridiculous.

There are a lot of things that affect battery life. Flash Player is a major culprit in decreased battery life. Watching streaming video is another. Check out "Click To Flash". Helped me a lot.  I have the late 2010 MBA 13 with SnowLeopard (no Lion) and average 7-9 hours of battery life.

  • I've got a USA macbook air and i need to find alternate symbols on the keyboard

Hey, I've got a USA macbook air and I need to find a UK pound symbol.....can you help? Thanks x

    Go>Preferences>Language & Text>Input sources
Now go on down to "British" and check off the box for your flag there. All good? Okay, close up.
Back to the screen. You see that little flag up there in the corner of your screen? Click on it. Pick the right flag so the Union Jack is flying in that corner. Good. Now click on the flag and pick: "Keyboard viewer."
Now hit the shift key on that keyboard viewer and you'll see where the pound sign and other symbols now are and will always be so long as that little British flag is in the corner. Should be #3. This will save you having to do any combo of keys in order to get the British pound sign.

    Hey Stella,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities, and thanks for the question! I'd read through the following article before selling your Mac - it'll include instructions on how to reformat your hard drive:

As a graphic design student I wanted to own a laptop that was capable of running Adobe programs and games, but I bought a 2014 Macbook Air; 128GB of storage, 4GB of memory, and runs at 1.4 Ghz. With this information will I still be able to run programs with no problem or will I need to buy a Mac Mini to run all the programs and games that'll be too much for my Air.

Your MacBook Air has turbo boost up to 2.7GHz >  http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-air?product=MD711LL/B&step=config
Check Adobe's website for minimum requirements for the apps and games you want to use.
Turbo boost is a technology integrated into Intel processors that temporarily increases the speed of the processor when needed.

  • My new macbook air says I need to sign in with another id to download app store updates

I have a new MacBook Air.  I have two pending updates from the app store (garage band and iphoto) that it will not let me update because it says I am not signed in under the correct account.  I am signed into my itunes account so I don't know what I am doing wrong.  Can someone help me please?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Did you purchase a second-hand Mac? If so, this is the answer. You need to purchase Mountain Lion by reinstalling the original Mac OS X version that came with your MacBook.
If you didn't purchase a second-hand Mac and you have a Mid 2012 or Mid 2013 MacBook Air, make sure you started up in Recovery HD and that you are using the Apple ID you used to set up your MacBook Air. Another option is to use Internet Recovery (hold Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting), because some users said it doesn't require any Apple ID.
If this doesn't work, contact with the Mac App Store support > http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact

  • MacBook Air freeze and need to be restarted when downloading with a web browser only!

    Here is my configuration:
    - Macbook air 2012, mountain lion.
Here are the symptoms that affect the computer:
    - The computer freezes when I try to download a file through a web browser (tested with chrome and safari). I can download  through the Appstore for instance.
So I have to turn it off by long pressing the off button.
Then when I restart  it reboot without worries or it restarts again by freezing and by 3 beeps when the desktop appears.
    - What I tried to do:
Checking permissions and disk and no problems detected.
Reinstall osx partition from the partition recovery hd, but I got an error when preparing the installation.
I wanted to mention that this problem started to appear when I downgraded parallels desktop 8 to 7 and running my boot camp with parallels 7 but with higher configurations!
    and it crashed several times.
I also read that the number of beeps had a precise meaning.
    Thank you

  • Just Bought A MacBook Air,Do I Need Norton Antivirus,Thx

    I'm A New MacBook Air Owner,Do I Need Norton Anivirus,Thx

    No.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • TS3276 I can not send group emails on my new Macbook air. I need to for my job. Help.

I cannot send Bcc group emails on macbook air, Maverick. Any ideas?

    create a group in contacts.
create a new email in Mail.app
in the View menu in Mail, check the Bcc address field option
in the Bcc box in your email, type in the name of the group and then a comma.

  • I have just bought my first MacBook Air do you need antivirus software?

I have just bought my first MacBook Air should I have antivirus software like you do for a Windows base PC?

I don't recommend anti-virus software for a Mac. Such software often causes more issues than it solves.
Be careful about the websites you visit, the links you follow, and the attachments you open and you should be fine.

  • HT1766 I got a new MacBook Air. I need to sync my iPhone with the iTunes on my new computer so I can back up my iPhone. How do I do this without losing my pictures/contacts, etc. on my iPhone?

I have not updated my phone yet because I know it needs to be backed up first. However, I cannot do this in fear of losing everything on it if I sync to my new itunes. I am not really concerned with losing music, just do not want to lose pictures, notes, etc.

First you need to copy the entire iTunes folder from the
old computer to the new one.  You should also make sure
that anything on the old computer that goes on the iPhone
is present on the new computer.
If it is a Mac, this process is usually pretty easy by using
Migration Assistant which will transfer all that stuff over to
    the new Mac.
If you are using a PC, I will defer that to someone else for
all but the iTunes stuff.  You will do the same thing on the
PC, that is copy the entire iTunes folder to the new computer.
Migration assistant is available to move things from a PC,
but not sure how well that works.
When openning iTunes for the first time, you will need to hold
down the Option key on the Maccbook Air and you will
be presented with a dialog box and you will select open existing
library and navigate to it.  Failure to do this, will create a default
library with nothing in it and you will have to move stuff again.
So if all the data is the same, you should be able to sync
    just fine.
