Macbook Air Extremely Slow/Stuck
Dear all,
A few months ago my MBA was still logged on when the battery went empty. I charged it completely, but then it was extremely slow. Sometimes it was just stuck. I then used the power button to shut it down completely. After that my MBA never starte up again: it remained stuck at the start-up screen (spinning cogwheel and mac-logo). I asked the distributor to re-install OS X. Fortunately the distributor was willing to do so. Re-installing OS X helped.
Yesterday the same thing happened. Obviously I don't want to go through this again so I am waiting very patiently for programs to load. Sometimes this takes up to 20 minutes. (I should add that sometimes it works very smoothly). Clearly, this is not very functional. Does anyone have an idea what to do? I need my mac.
One thing I may have done wrong: I renamed the computer name into my name; Thijmen. I used the uppercase T, which I shouldn't have, according to what I've read after changing the name.
I hope someone knows what to do with this.
Kind regards,
Thijmen
I went through the same issue with changing the main user's name while not realizing what the terrible path ahead would be, but I never had startup issues personally. newer MBAs should be starting up on a dime, so obviously you have a serious problem that can't be solved easily at home.

Macbook Air Extremely Slow Wireless
Hello All,
Got my brand new MB-Air and from the get-go noticed extremely slow wireless performance. I did a bit of digging and here is what I found.
The MB-Air works OK with cheap (consumer) wireless APs, however when used in conjunction with the commercial APs most of which use the Atheros chipset the performance is horrible. I found that when connecting to APs that use Atheros' commercial chipset, the MB-Air connects with 802.11 G specs instead of N even when the signal metrics are excellent such as -39 RSSI.
Moreover, even With the 802.11 G connection at 54Mbps the performance is both sluggish and latent. Small file transfers have a 50/50 shot at working and large file transfers seem to die reliably. Albeit this could be an issue with Apple's implementation of SMB / Samba which is rather poor.
I have tried to turn off Bluetooth to see if my experience is different. We'll see.
I would be interested in feedback from people who are also experiencing the same poor wireless performance to learn the chipset of the AP they are having issues with.
By-the-way -- I will take a fix, if someone has come up with one. However my guess is that this is an engineering issue that Apple has to fix.
BPSitting side-by-side, my MBA was averaging less than 1 Mb/s on downloads, and my MBP more than 9 Mb/s. The MBP was fully ten times faster. As you can imagine, viewing videos was a ragged, unpleasant experience on the MBA.
I'm using an early wireless-N Belkin router, so it didn't show up on airport utility, thus i couldn't change channels there as proposed on this thread. But to isolate the problem, at my brother's suggestion i took both computers to a Starbucks, and observed the two computers downloading there at equal speeds. So clearly the problem wasn't with my MBA, but my router.
I went to Belkin's website to figure out how to change channels on the router, and checked for firmware updates. There was one, so i figured I'd do that before attacking the "changing channels" task. I upgraded the firmware, and with that simple fix my MBA is happily zipping along now with >9 Mb/s downloads, same as the MBP. More than TEN times faster than before. My iPhone download speeds increased more than tenfold, too.
My advice, if you're having wireless problems with your MBA: First make sure your router's running the latest firmware. -
Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone. I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow. I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1: It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1. For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems. So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine. Is that possible? Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2: It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets. A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable. I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer? Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
All the best. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal. -
My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Furthermore, when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank and I sit here frustrated. Anytime i wake up my computer, my keys don't respond and I've waited at most 3 minutes untill i can type in my password. Even sometimes when i type in my password and hit enter, it takes forever to open up my mac. I have barely used any storage in my macbook, since i only use it for college, and I have run clamscan wiht no viruses showing... Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Why is my macbook air so slow?
why is my macbook air so slow?
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -

why is my MacBook Air running slow and I bought the 11 inch with all memory and turbo boost
Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference? -
My macbook air running slow even on recovery mode
My macbook air running slow even on recovery mode when I press Alt + Power it takes me to Mac os Utilities the mouse barely moves, I erased every thing on the hard drive so I can install a fresh copy of mac os but I couldn't because every time I try to boot up from the USB that got the mac os it takes for ever to load the OS for installtion, and some times every thing freeze when I'm on the Mac os Utilities mode. Any ideas of what's going on ?

My mid 2011 MacBook Air has slowed down significantly overnight?
Last night my MacBook Air was working fine.
When I went to use it this morning, it has slowed down significantly. It takes awhile for it to respond to trackpad movement or the keyboard. Opening finder is delayed now, opening any app is delayed now. Booting it back up takes extra long now, probably around a minute compared to thirty seconds before.
I've tried an SMC reset, repairing the disk and repairing disk permissions.
From what I can see, the hardware doesn't appear to be failing, but I could be wrong.
Can anyone help me out? What could possibly be going on with my MacBook? How did this happen overnight?Your MacBook Air's memory is not upgradable, and as you already determined unused storage capacity is not a relevant factor.
There are many reasons a Mac may be performing slower than expected.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

MacBook Air painfully slow after Yosemite update
Dear all,
I've updated my Macbook Air (2011) to Yosemite in order to make it compatible with Apple TV.
Since doing this everything is VERY slow, not just slightly slow but VERY slow.
I was advised to buy more memory - but it doesn't seem possible to purchase extra memory for a MacBook Air.
I would really like to take a step backwards and change back to my previous OS - is there any way of doing this?
I don't mind not using Apple Tv with my Mac as long as it goes back to working normally.
Thanks and sorry if this question has already been posted.Hi,
I ran Etrcheck and this is the result :

I get the spinning wheel most of the time before the action is completed. All other Macs which are newer in my home WiFi network operate just fine. I have done a top level (novice) check for malware, and haven’t found anything. Any help you can suggest would be truly appreciated! Thank you!

I don't see any of the usual software suspects associated with slow downs. You don't need the Seagate software, you should uninstall that.
Reset the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
You only have 2GB of ram and could upgrade to 8GB, but Snow Leopard should run ok in 2GB.....not great but ok.
Start up in Safe Mode OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support be paitient as it will take awhile to start as it checks and tries to repair any problems with the file system. Once it's completely started up you can restart normally.
Insert your Snow Leopard disc and restart while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions. While in Disk Utility check the SMART status of the hard drive, anything other than Verified indicates a problem with the hard drive.
Again, you only have 2GB of ram.....try restarting your Macbook every day.....it's been running for almost a week now. -
My MacBook is about a year old, and recently it became extremely slow during startup. At first it just seemed a little slow, but the past couple of days it has taken more and more time. It's now taking 5 - 10 minutes to fully come on. Once it's on, everything is fine.
I've troubleshooted in Apple Communities and tried all of the advice I've found, but nothing seems to be working. Here are the details.
My computer:
MacBook
OS 10.7.4
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Available hard disk space: 163.27 GB free (out of 249.2 GB)
What I've tried so far (in order):
1. Check startup disk - Startup disk was correctly selected
2. Use Disk Utility to Verify Hard Disk - No problems identified
3. Updated system software - no major updates (I update regularly to begin with)
4. Check System Monitor for hidden activity - Almost no activity (no other programs were running at the time); no strange users or activity
5. Check Login Items - The iTunesHelper was causing an error. I removed it and replaced it with iTunesHelper from the iTunes Package. The error was fixed, but no improvement in startup time. (Current Login items: GrowlMenu, GrowlHelperApp (Growl is up to date), iTunesHelper, Dropbox)
6. Check Library System Fonts - All necessary fonts for OS 10.7.4 are present. I haven't added or deleted fonts besides what can be installed with the OS and or with MS Office. Here the full list (long):

7. Verified and repaired disk permissions (there were several differences, they were all repaired).
I don't know what else to try. My Mac's not making any strange noises, and is otherwise running well. The only thing that I can think of is that it's been too humid in my house recently (rainy season in Japan). But the slow startup seems to be the same regardless of time of day and humidity, and if it were humidity I have no idea how to fix that. Also, none of my other Mac devices seem to be similarly affected, so I doubt that's the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!It turns out that my hard drive was shot. I took my MacBook to the Apple Store on Wednesday, they kept it for analysis and repair. They replaced the hard drive, and I've already got it back (Friday; less than two days in total).
Although I did check my hard disk with the disk utility, it did not identify the problem.
Some other troubleshooting advice that I overlooked was to try reinstalling my OS and to try starting up in Safe Mode. Neither would have helped in this case, but they may be useful for someone else having similar problems.
Other advice - always make sure your data is backed up and that you Apple Care coverage is up to date. -
Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists
My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet. Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
Any advice is appreciated!

I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!

MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!
Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Jun 6 09:24:24 localhost kernel[0] <Debug>: Previous Shutdown Cause: -60Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'm not too Mac savvy, so the help is very much appreciated. So here's what I've done...
Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
Reset P-Ram.
Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
The battery condition is normal

I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal. I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

I have to make an application, in which there is an option "Report". When the user click the Report option, it should open a compose message page. from there the user can able to compose message. and then able to send it.
