MacBook Air fails to "wake"

I have a 2014 MacBook Air running 10.9.5 with 1.4 GHz Intel i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
Have only noticed today that when I try to wake it from sleep mode, I get a black screen and only my cursor- and nothing else. Not even my screen saver, so I have to press the power button (the only key that seems to function). It runs fine in all other respects, and the only updates in the last month are the security update (2015- 002) and the update to Safari (which I don't use anyway).
Not sure what could be causing this- and if anyone's got a solution that'd be great.

Hi flowerbedgrl
Hope you are well.
So, I'm guessing you've noticed this multiple times today (it wasn't just a once-off)? I'm also assuming you've checked your Energy Saver settings etc.
You could try doing this:
Shut down the computer
Unplug the power cable
Wait about 15 seconds, and reconnect power cable
Restart while holding down Command and S (keep these keys pressed until you see a black screen with white text).
When the text stops, the bottom line should read: root#
Type in the following lines (taking careful note of where the spaces are), one by one, pressing the return key after each line:
mount -uw /
cd /Library/Preferences
mv com.apple.loginwindow.plist oldlogin
reboot
    7. Your Mac will reboot.
If you find that your Mac still does the 'black screen' thing, wait about 10 seconds and try clicking around with your cursor to determine if it now wakes up or not.
Hope this helps.
Joe.

  • Macbook Air fails to wake up from sleep. The keyboard lights up but the screen was still black. Had trouble turning it on and off and after I was able to turn the notebook back on, my information was lost.

My brand new macbook air is just over 1 month old, and I am already having a problem. While working on a pages doc I stepped away for a couple of minutes to find that my notebook went to sleep. battery life was 71%. So I tryed to wake it by keying a few buttons, but the screen would not wake and the keyboard was lit up. Also, I could not power it down. I was only able to power it down after i plugged it in to the wall outlet. After I restarted the computer my document was lost. I changed the settings so that the computer was fall asleep after 1 hour of no activity, because I'm afraid this will happen again and I will lose my work. What can I do to fix the problem?
    Regards,

Well, since upgrading to Mavericks, I started watching a movie. Suddenly the screen dims and then goes black. Trying to waken my MBA means I need to restart. I have turned off all the sleep fuctions for the monitor and the hard drive. Still is happening??

  • MacBook Air fails to wake and reboots instead after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi,
I've got a MacBook Air, 2011, 13', that has been working fine for a few years already. I upgraded to Mavericks two days ago and so far it has been working great except for one irritating issue - it keeps rebooting my system instead of waking up the computer from sleep after some long sleep cycles. For instance, I was working on my MacBook for the whole day yesterday and put it to short sleep for a few times and everything worked fine. But when I put my Mac to sleep and got back home and tried to awake it, I saw a rebooted login screen, and the system suggested that I should send a crash report to Apple.
The exact same thing happened just a few minutes ago when I awoke my Mac from a night-long sleep.
On Lion and Mountain Lion, I never had such issues.
Is this an issue with Mavericks that I should fix somehow?
    Thanks for your replies.

  • Macbook air doesn't wake from sleep

Since upgrading recently to Snow Lion my late 2010 Macbook Air won't wake from sleep mode. I have a second monitor. After sleeping I hbave to hit the ctrl-alt-power to get it to boot up which is does as a normal cold start. I have power sleep turned off. Ideas?

Later today I disconnnected my 17 inch monitor and put the mAcbook Air to sleep from the Applpe menu. 1st thing, it didn't want to go to sleep. Finally it did. About 3 hiours later I opened the lid or hit space (I forget which) and the screen lit up to where I had left it.
That woukld seem to suggest that somethihng is going on with the monitors preferences, or whatever, as before updating to Mountain Lion I had no sleep problems. What now? Reinstall Mountain Lion or?
    TIA, BIll

  • Macbook Air crashes on wake

I have a Macbook Air purchased in mid 2013 (SPECS: 1.3 ghz, 4GB DDR3). I have been using it since then with no problem. In the last 3 weeks, it has started freezing whenever I wake it from sleep. Over the same time period it has also started taking a long time to boot up (anywhere from 2-5 minutes). Safari has been crashing frequently as well, and I have switched back to Firefox for now to avoid this.
    - When it wakes, the password screen shows up. I type in my password and then nothing. I can leave it for several minutes and it won't log in (oddly enough, I can see the mouse on the screen and move it)
    - I don't think this was temporally related to an install of an OS update. It is currently running Yosemite 10.10.2
    - I found some discussion that this could be fixed by an SMC/PRAM reset. I have tried this and it seems to help in the short term (a few hours) but then I close the lid of my Macbook and put it to sleep and if I leave it for the night or a couple hours, it goes right back to freezing
    - I am totally lost and could really use some suggestions on where to look/what to try next. I would consider taking it to the genius bar, but since it was purchased by my ex-boyfriend, that would likely mean calling him to get permission to make changes (I assume) and for a number of reasons I would prefer we not be in contact. He gave me the computer and knows I have it, so it's not a legal/stolen issue.

I got it to crash again.  I tried to pare down the log as much as I could.
Observation: if I turn off WiFi, it does not appear to crash.
Any help is greatly appreciated. This is driving me crazy.

  • Macbook Air 2012 now wakes up with delay

I got a new Macbook Air 13" in July. 2 weeks later I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Since then the login screen wakes up with a delay of a few seconds from sleep. Even though the login screen displays promptly, the keyboard does not respond ... then there is a screen flicker and then only I can type the password.
This is defintely a bug - any idea how to resolve this?

It is either your CD or your Superdrive (you never said explicitly, but sounds like you are using an external USB superdrive).
Have your tried installing CD/DVD sharing on another computer (if that is an option) and trying the install DVD from that computer (and using remote install)? This may rule out the DVDs themselves. If you do this remember:
    1) You will have to connect to wireless or wired network when holding down the option key during MBA boot,
    2) You will need to run the "remote install MacOS X" application that you have installed on computer with remote DVD drive,
    3) The entire process will take a VERY LONG TIME (including the startup on the installer).

  • Macbook occasionally fails to wake from sleep

i have a new macbook (purchsed in july) which occasionally (every 1-2 weeks) fails to wake from sleep. it either hangs on the blue screen which first comes up when you switch it on, or on the black screen which normally follows shortly afterwards.
i regularly use it "closed", i.e., with an external screen and keyboard, but the problem seems also to happen occasionally when i switch it on without these peripherals.
    any ideas?
i've also had dvd player crash once. it was in full screen mode, and i couldn't switch to any other applications or force quit dvd player, so again i had to cut power.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Having similar issues...not that it happens everyday ...it's very infrequent..but yeah im in the same boat..
As far as the computer being hot...
    Go to :
    System Preference--->Energy Savings
From there you should have the boxed check both on Battery power and AC Cord to put the Hard drive to sleep when possible..
Once i did this it never happened again(the closing of the lid and still running)
as far as the other issue??Help.!!Anyone?

  • MacBook Air won't wake after shutting lid

    Hey guys,
My 11" Macbook air OsX 10.6.8 goes to sleep when I shut the lid with external monitor plugged in.
The problem is, it will not un-sleep anymore. Usuall just opening the lid would do this, but now it just stays blank on both monitors. Pressing the on button elicits no response either.
To get back to the computer I have to hold on button down for 5 seconds. Presumably this forces full shutdown, Then pressing the on button will do a full load from shutdown.
Incredibly frustrating! Is there ay way to adjust the settings for what closing the lid does?

I have a Macbook Air and it also frequently (6 times out of 10) will not wake from sleep mode, only way to revive it is to hold down power button for 10 secs and force a restart. VERY FRUSTRATING!
I also occasionally use an external Apple 24' Screen (Non LED) and find that the MBAir will often freeze when you plug that into it or unplug it from it.. Perhaps I have a hardware fault on the MB Air? Or will this be fixed in software?

  • Macbook Air won't wake on demand

I just bought a new Macbook Air to replace my 2009 Macbook Pro.  I used Logmein all the time to access my laptop when it was sitting home.  I'd usually leave it plugged in, lid open, and it would be asleep.
Now, with this new computer, I cannot wake on demand.  Once it goes to sleep, I cannot access it with Logmein.
In system preferences/energy saver, i have "Wake for Wi-Fi network access" checked.
In system preferences/sharing, i have screen sharing turned on.
in Logmein preferences, i have "Enable Wake 'On LAN' from Sleeping mode" checked.
I don't feel like anything is set up differently than my old computer, but for some reason it does not work.
    Anybody have any help?

Exactly same problem. wake up from sleeps causes black screen (not always, but often).
moving the mouse unvovers the regular login-screen. then everthing works fine.
didn't try to close and reopen thee lid. thanks for the tip!
PRAM & NVRAM reset and safe boot already tried.  unfortunately did not change anything.
    Great machine anyway!
    Thanks for any help!

  • MacBook Air freezing upon wake from sleep

Hello there! Ever since installing Mavericks, my MacBook Air freezes nearly every time I wake it from sleep. Whever I open the lid, it allows me to enter my password, and then it freezes. Other times, it will let me log in, and then whenever I try to use Safari or another application it freezes. It doesn't completely freeze, I get the beachball and everything. What is going on?

    Hello there AustinJGibson,
It sounds like you are having performance issues with Mavericks.
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after having installed Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting information from this article named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
Next I would perform a Safe Boot:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Macbook air doesn't wake up after improper shutdown

    Hi guys,
I've had this issue for couple times in the past 8 months.
I've consulted Apple support but doesn't seem helpful at all.
They took my MacBook Air for invenstigation for over a week and returned and concluded no issue found.
Hence I had to consult genius on the forum.
I seldomly had this issue, my MacBook Air 2012 just shuts while it's in use, or while it's asleep, and I couldn't wake it up.
It looked like dead and nothing turned it back on, keyboard nor pwoer button.
I could only to wait for another 10 or 15 minutes, and then press the power button again.
Usuallys it comes back from a restart and return to the login menu.
After I log in, it shows there was an inproper shutdown.
This kinda annoys me as I don't know if there's going to be any potential issue after my warranty expires. (still 4 months left)
After suggestion would be much appreciated.

    Hi all,
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the late reply as I was away from Internet access for the past week.
I couldn't reproduce this at will. It happened again this morning.
I was pretty sure I had the power connected, lid closed and connected to my HDMI monitor and USB mouse and keyboard. I left the MacBook Air on when I went to bed, and I had power went sleep after an hour in the energy setting.
When I resumed my computer by pressing keys couple of times (strange, it doesn't wake my computer up with one press) on my USB keyboard, my computer went straight into the login screen. I knew it was shutting down again.
I just did reset SMC but I don't think it helps. I'll monitor it for another week.
I did have the crash log and will send to Apple Support for further investigation.
I'll post it here just in case anyone is interested.

  • MacBook Air won't wake up, and when it finally does the clock is wrong.

I've got a 13-inch Late 2010 MacBook Air that since yesterday has been very difficult to wake up. Battery is fully charged, but opening and closing it, hitting keys, pressing power button and clicking trackpad caused no response. Eventually it seems to wake up on its own after minutes or hours of frustration. The last time holding down the power button for several seconds seemed to finally wake the machine up (not turn it off as I would expect) – though holding down the power button had no effect previous times I had this problem.
When the machine finally decides to wake, the clock is wrong. Correct time zone, correct date, but slow some minutes or some hours. Eventually it will connect to the time server and reset to the correct time.
The first time I finally got it awake, I reset the PMU and zapped the PRAM, but those seemed to have no effect.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing these problems? Thanks muchly!

  • MacBook Air won't wake up after sleep

I've been reporting sleep problems with my iMac for a while in the past. No-one here would take it seriously (probably hardware, your reports are incidents, no-one else has these problems) so I just went away and I disabled the sleep function of my iMac alltogether, and I won't select the "sleep" button in the login screen anymore, or select "sleep" from the apple menu. No sleep no problem, right?
*Well, I bought a Macbook Air three days ago, and in those three days I have had TWO occasions already where I wanted to wake the Macbook after sleep* (closed lid) and it wouldn't wake up. All I get is the rainbow mouse pointer and the Macbook is unusable unless I reboot it.
Mind you, nothing is connected to the macbook but the power cable, and I find it hard to believe that my Macbook Air would also suffer from 'hardware problems' like my iMac alledgedly is.
In all my time using OSX 10.4 on my 17" PowerPC MacBook pro I have never had any problems, but since switching to Intel Macs with 10.5 I have these "sleep" problems all the time.
What gives, and can I expect Apple to do anything about this problem that I've been having since I bought my iMac more than a year ago, and is now also spoiling my MacBook Air experience?

I have a Macbook Air and it also frequently (6 times out of 10) will not wake from sleep mode, only way to revive it is to hold down power button for 10 secs and force a restart. VERY FRUSTRATING!
I also occasionally use an external Apple 24' Screen (Non LED) and find that the MBAir will often freeze when you plug that into it or unplug it from it.. Perhaps I have a hardware fault on the MB Air? Or will this be fixed in software?

  • My late 2010 Macbook Air fails to start up

I took my MacBook Air (late 2010 models) with me on my travels to Asia. A few days into my trip, I went back to my laptop. After opening the lid, the Macbook started up from the hibernation state as normal. Whilst I was typing in my password, the laptop suddenly switched off no warnings given. Very briefly I thought to see the screen turn white before it went black.
Now, the laptop does not start at all. After pressing the power button, there's no response. The fans don't spin up and there is no sound or display feedback. It's basically completely dead. I have tried using the known key combinations to reset the System Management Controller, but still no luck. Many recovery procedures suggested by Apple do not work, since i can not start up the computer.
Has somebody got experience with this issue so I can diagnose the problem based on these symptoms?

Hi, thanks for the response. I did try most of these steps and they did fail on me.
I decided to take my laptop to the approved service providers. Luckily my laptop's issues could be resolved by the technicians. They found that the power supply chip was faulty.
Since they replaced this chip, my MacBook now starts up perfectly normal again.
