Macbook Air freezes

I have a 2-month-old Macbook Air that periodically freezes.  I am working along in MS Office and all of a sudden the screen freezes, sometimes I can still move the cursor, sometimes not, but nothing is clickable on the screen and the keyboard also doesn't do anything.
Sometimes if I wait long enough everything suddenly returns to normal, sometimes after 15 minutes I just force shutdown and restart (after which it seems to work properly for another day or so).
I'm going to take it to the Apple Store but I'm wondering if there's any log anywhere I can use as evidence for the Genius Bar guys.  My luck it won't act up while at the store and they'll just send me home to reinstall OSX or something...
Thanks!

Hi ..
A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help.
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a bit longer then a normal boot so be patient and follow the instructions at that link to the letter.
Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon (top left in the screen). From the drop down menu click Restart.
See if the Mac still freezes ...
If it does, if you migrated files from another Mac to the Air, check to see how much free space there is on the startup disk.   Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
A word to the wise. Before taking your Mac to a Genius Bar, make sure and backup all your important files first. Even if they just reinstall the Mac OS X, best to be on the safe side with a backup.

  • Macbook Air freezes when changing screensaver

I am having issues when I try to change my screensaver. Whenever I click on a different screensaver option, my Macbook Air freezes, and I have to force close System Preferences. I have no problems with changing my desktop wallpaper. I have restarted my laptop but it still freezes.
I saw another board with a similiar problem except instead of the screensaver window freezing, their desktop window would freeze.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be several such files. Move them to the Trash.
Test. If the problem is resolved. recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab.

  • Macbook air freezes in screen save mode (Mid 2011 model using Mountain Lion

My MacBook Air freezes during screen save mode & is completely unresponsive.  The only option is to press & hold the power button to force a power down then restart the laptop.  This issue is not intermittent but happens every time the laptop is in screen save mode for any length of time (+20 mins).
The laptop is a Mid 2011 model. 1.8 GHz i7, 250 GB solid state HD, 13" display with 4 GB RAM.  I updated to Mountain Lion latest version about 1 month ago.

Hi there. I'm not using any 3rd party screen saver software, only the standard Mountain Lion supplied stuff.
I did have to get the Genuis Guys to reset my SMC as my battery, fan & power lead were showing problems.  Those issues are now solved but this has persisted.
I am considering a reinstal of the OS system but that is a 1 hour download following by ?? hours of waiting for the program to restart.
I'll try using one of the other screen saver options to test that.
    Thanks for that idea.

  • MacBook Air freezing upon wake from sleep

Hello there! Ever since installing Mavericks, my MacBook Air freezes nearly every time I wake it from sleep. Whever I open the lid, it allows me to enter my password, and then it freezes. Other times, it will let me log in, and then whenever I try to use Safari or another application it freezes. It doesn't completely freeze, I get the beachball and everything. What is going on?

    Hello there AustinJGibson,
It sounds like you are having performance issues with Mavericks.
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after having installed Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting information from this article named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
Next I would perform a Safe Boot:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,

  • Macbook air freezes up at grey screen and

My macbook air freezes up at the grey screen where you sign in. The mouse is stuck in the upper left corner and does not move. None of the buttons work either. What can I do?
It boots up like normal and then I cant do anything once it goes on the grey screen. HELP!

Reboot the computer and hold the Shift key as soon as it chimes. When you see the Apple icon release. This is will start you in Safe Mode (hopefully). Once the computer gets to the Finder (assuming it works) restart as normal and see if the cache cleaning solved your problem.
If that didn't work restart holding the Command R key to enter the recovery partition or Command Option R to enter Internet recovery mode. From one of these two options you can reformat the hard drive and restore from a backup.

  • My MacBook Air freezes momentarily after update to 10.8.2

My Trackpad/keyboard pointer freezes after I updated my MacBook Air 11 "2010, model A1370 to OS X 10.8.2.
With a few minutes intervals the pointer freezes for approx. 5 seconds - quite annoying.
Is there a solution to this problem - I have noticed a lot of other users with the same problem.

This appears to be a usb issue. I've noticed that the trackpad/keyboards stops for a few seconds everytime a usb device is plugged/unplugged.

  • MacBook Air Freezes at 50% when booting

    Hi,
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot. I'm new to the Apple Support forums (well, new to online forums in general). I have a newer MacBook Air that has very recently started to freeze periodically (spinning wheel), and now freezes while booting around the 50% mark. The only way I can get it to boot is to reset the SMC and the NVRAM using the keyboard commands when powering up. Even when it does boot, the Finder and dock are non-responsive most of the time and I have to shut-it down again by holding the power button. I have been to a licensed Apple service centre in my community, and they did all of the hardware tests, which it passed. I have run the disk utility from the recovery screen and there were no errors reported. I've also re-installed the OS from that same screen, but it still would not boot after finishing the download. I've searched many of the support communities and found out about EtreCheck. I have managed to get my MacBook to boot and ran the software. Below is the report that was generated. I'm hopping that I am missing something here and someone can point me in the right direction to get this fixed. It's been two weeks since the problems started and I travel for work. I'm sure others can appreciate how hard it is to work on the road without reliable access to my Mac. Thank-you in advance for any advice you can provide.

So, my Macbook Air has suddenly started to freeze and leave me with the dreaded spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I get 10mins into a session, and sometimes the freezing will occur as soon as I log in. I have tried to log in in safe mode, but I also get the SWOD here as well! My details are as follows:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

  • 2014 macbook air freezing

My Macbook Air has has intermittent issues with freezing but recently it has gotten worse. It is freezing 3 times a day. I tried online support but nothing they suggested worked. I took it to the store last week. They could not replicate the issue. One guy said to reinstall the OS, another said that would not correct the issue. So, I brought it home and reinstalled the OS. Today it started freezing again. I called support and they began having me repeat all the previous steps. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve the issue?
The freezing is not related to any specific program.
    Thanks,
    Dana

If you are using the Sky Player software, it may be that this app is using up all you memory space and crashing the computer. How much memory do you have installed? Do you have other apps running at the same time? Are there settings in the Sky Player that can limit its demands?

  • Macbook air freezes after login on internet

    Hi
I'm having an issue with a student's macbook Air, running 10.6.7 fully updated.
What happened is it was working fine, she was just having a website pop up issue, so I ticked the "Auto Proxy Discovery" setting, like all other macbooks.
Then I quit Safari and opened it again, it loaded some of the Apple page and beach balled. I can move the mouse but everything else is frozen, cannot force quit, so had to hold down the power button. The same thing happens in Firefox. The kicker is that it all works in Safe Mode and I can browse to a website just fine. (All students are required to login to the proxy server)
It works fine in normal mode if I'm just using Word or anything not requiring internet.
She has had this problem before, but it was fixed by the previous IT guy and she did say it ran out of power last night and shutdown. This just seems so strange!
Thankyou for any help in advance.
    Pierre

Ok I have an update which is most interesting.
The student said it worked fine at home over the weekend. They brought it to school today and bam, as soon as they log onto the network it will freeze if it gets any internet traffic. I cancelled the proxy login when opening Safari then it froze after 3 seconds, but I still believe it's internet traffic related.
I turned it off and back on, but didn't log onto the network just yet and it works fine, obviously getting no http traffic.
I guess when I couldn't find the power button like a normal macbook it decided not to like our school

  • Macbook Air freezes on Saturday mornings

This is really strange and i would like to solve it.
My Macbook Air works fine all week, but EVERY Saturday morning, when i first open it to use it, after about 2 minutes it starts freezing and getting the spinning rainbow thingy. This lasts about 1 or 2 minutes and keeps repeating itself for around 20 minutes or so.
After that its fine and no longer does the spinning rainbow or freezing or anything.
This ONLY happens on Saturday mornings.
Restarting is useless. I had even re-installed OSX and it still remained the same.
I tried loading Console, but nothing strange was reported.
    The computer is a MacBookAir2,1 with 120GB HD, 2GB DDR3 and Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard.

It sounds like you have a backup program, or other progam that is trying to do something scheduled. When it does that, have you looked at the Activity Monitor to see what is running, whether a program is monopolizing the CPU?  Activity Monitor is under applications/utilities.

  • MacBook Air freezes when connected to the Internet. (LAN and WiFi)

    I have a MacBook Air A1304 running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
When it connects to the AirLive Duo router set as Client + AP (bridges the wifi signal from the DSL), it freezes up.
Wifi works fine with the iPad.  I tried the wifi and LAN and I get the same results. I don't even have to be surfing, just being connected to the Internet will freezes the whole MBA after about a minute.
AirLive tested their router with their MacBook for two days but didn't have any problem. I run the latest firmware for the router too.

  • Macbook Air freezes after standby and boots with Questionmark-folder

    Hello Apple Community,
    My Macbook Air 2011
    i5
    4gb ram
    128ssd
    Lion
started acting up recently. After waking it from sleep (on any of the 3 hibernate modes) it freezes(beachball, no reaction) as soon as I use an application.
Adding to that, everytime I boot it needs around 4-6 attempts to boot and not show the questionmark folder.
I did reset NVRAM and SMC, which brought very short relief, but after 2 or 3 boot sequenzes it stopped working again. I then repaired the disk in recovery mode which seemed to fix the boot problem. However, the sleep problem still persisted. I changed the hibernate setting from 2 to 1, because I assumed a harddrive problem. After that though, the mac did not wake at all after sleep and I had to force a restart. After that, the questionmark folder was back...
Does anyone have any input? I really dont know what to do, it seems both RAM and harddrive broke. However, when it boots properly it runs like always, no problems, what so ever.

Time to send it to Apple for repair...

I had this Macbook air for a week now and is running on Lion. Everything was fine until yesterday when it started freezing several times a day for no reason. Any clues?
