MacBook Air from prior MacBook Pro leads to poor performance?

Last week my laptop (MacBook Pro) was stolen. I decided to buy a MacBook Air and reinstall my applications and some of my data from the MBP to a new MBA. I love the size/weight of the MacBook Air and the battery life but I've been having a number of issues with performance. For example:
-I'm getting the "beachball" a lot more on the MBA than I did on the MBP. I took the computer into the Genius Bar today and they told me that "it might not be good to run more than 6-7 apps at the same time" on the MBA. With the MBP I never had a problem runs lots of apps simultaneously.
-I'm having a problem whenever I download images from the Web. My computer basically freezes for 5 seconds or so. That never happened on the MBP.
What I'm wondering is whether these things are common with the MBA because it isn't as high-powered as the MBP. I'm also wondering if a part of this is because I didn't install the MBA from scratch but rather from my previous MBP install (through Time Machine). I know fresh installs are better but am really dreading the thought of having to reinstall all apps, reconfigure preferences, etc.
Any thoughts?

Sorry to hear about the theft. The Airs are great machines for a few reasons but one in particular is that the NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics chip is a really top notch choice. Some benchmarks report that it is comparable or superior to the upgrade on the new Pros. The CPU is Core 2 Duo and at a lower GHZ it is designed for low temp, long battery life. Multi applications really depend on a combination of spare hard drive space and loads of RAM (although yes, you will see beach balls more than a Pro, but in theory it is more a cosmetic lag than sluggish machine). I've had two Macs, and I feel that any Mac can get sluggish if you don't do maintenance on them. Repair, verify, clear your cache, and so on. Don't forget certain times are heavy with background activity (indexing, etc). In the end if you need the snap of instant response, take it back and get a Pro, but you pay a price (heat and short battery life.) What size is your Air? How much RAM has it got and what size SSD? Another idea would be to get your exact old machine from the refurbished Apple page (at a discount)>

If you used migration assistant then it probably created a new Login user and placed the migrated files under it.

I need to buy Macbook Air with MS W7 Pro. How?

If all you need is Office then you dont need Windows 7 as there is already a version of Office which will run on a Mac. Its called Office 2011.

  • Can I use a power cord from a Macbook air with a Macbook?

Can I use a power cord from a Macbook air with a Macbook?

No, the MacBook Air power adapter is a 45 watt. A MacBook needs at least a 60 watt power adapter although you can use a MacBook Pro 85 watt adapter. You can use a higher wattage adapter without any problems.

  • How can I back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro Hard Drive using Time Machine?

Want to back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro with a spare hard drive. Sharing allows Time Machine to find the hard drive, but get a drive busy message when time machine tries to back up onto the drive.
    Any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Can I exchange my macbook air for the new pro?

I recently bought a haswell series 13" macbook air exactly 1 week before the introduction of the new haswell macbook pros.  After considering the spec and price difference I realized I'd rather have the pro. I looked on the returns tab on the website.  It said I can return my product within 14 days. Is it possible for me to exchange my air for the pro without having to go through returning my macbook air and buying the pro?  I realized the price difference wasn't all that differernt and I wouldn't mind the extra power. I currently have the 13" macbook air i5 with 8gb. I plan on getting the 8gb for the 13" retina display macbook pro as well

I strongly doubt it. The best thing for you to do is to return this one before the 14 days expire. If the time passes you will have to keep the Air and try to sell it privately.
Once Apple accepts the Air back and you know you are getting a refund you can start the order process for the Pro.

  • I purchased a macbook air from someone on craigslist, and when i try to download iPhoto, it tells me that these apps were already designated to another apple id.

I purchased a macbook air from someone on craigslist, and when i try to download iPhoto, it tells me that these apps were already designated to another apple id. any way to reset the app store from thinking it's still alligned with him? Lion was reset already, but this isn't. If i download on my mac mini, will i then be able to retrieve the download on my air?

    Hi...
On the MBAir drag the iPhoto app to the Trash, empty the Trash.
Then try purchasing and downloading iPhoto.
You can re download iPhoto on all your authorized Macs. To authorize the MBAir, launch iTunes. From the menu bar click Store > Authorize This Mac. You will be prompted for your Apple ID and password.
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

  • Should I buy the new MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro

Should I buy the new MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro?

it really depends what you are going to be doing, if you are going to be video editing and doing intensive stuff the Macbook Pro.
if you are going to be just browsing the web and doing lite video editing and not that intensive stuff than you should go with the Macbook Air.
Also if you want a cheaper computer than you should get the Macbook Air.  By cheap, I mean less expensive.

    No.

If you didn't purchase the extended warranty, AppleCare, you are not entitled to any repairs free of charge once the 1 year warranty expires.

  • Use of 802.11 ac wifi with my MacBook Air from end of 2010

Is it possible to upgrade my MacBook Air (from end of 2010) with an adapter for 802.11 ac? I want to use it with a new AirPort Time Capsule.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your AirPort card does not allow you to use 802.11ac. However, you can buy a Wi-Fi adapter that supports 802.11ac, so you can connect to your new AirPort Time Capsule through 802.11ac.
Note that this is not necessary, and that most users will not note any difference between 802.11ac and 802.11n, which is the connection that your Mac will use to connect to your AirPort Time Capsule through the internal AirPort. Also, note that you will need a driver for the Wi-Fi adapter

  • Can I load Lion from preloaded MacBook Air onto my MacBook?

Can I install Lion from preloaded new MacBook Air onto my MacBook after I install Snow Leopard?

That would be against the Software Licence Agreement. It may not work in as much as the Lion install on the MBA is machine specific. Pay the $29.

  • How update my macbook air from OS X 10.5.8 to newest OS

how I can update my MacBook Air from OS X 10.5.8 to newer OS avalaible

You can't directly upgrade from 10.5 - call Apple and purchase 10.6. Back up your computer and install 10.6. I'm not sure what version of 10.6 you'll get - you may need to download an update to 10.6 before you can upgrade to 10.8 because the App Store wasn't part of the original 10.6 - it came with the 10.6.8 update if I remember properly. Once you've upgraded to 10.6 and have the App store you can upgrade to 10.8.

  • Upgrade Hard disk on a macbook air from 80g to 120g

I'm trying to upgrade my hard drive disk on a macbook air from the original 80g to the new 120g, does some one knows were can I find and buy the 120G HDD?

    Hi Andres,
there is a problem if you mean the 120 GB HDD from Rev. B - your MBA uses the PATA-interface, the new one the SATA-interface.
In one sentence: The 120 GB from Rev B. will NOT fit your Rev A.

  • New MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro?

My crappy HP laptop has officially passed away last night, after being sick for quite a while (RIP). I hate HP and usually get it, only because I'm broke. But I've always admired MacBooks and have gotten used to using Apple (I have an Apple computer at work, I have an iPhone/iPad). Anyway, so now I'm looking to get either a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro. I'm currently debating between the basic 13" MBP and the 13" MBA. They both look delicious. The price looks better for the MBA, but I can throw in a couple hundred if the MBP is more worth it.
Here's some more about me. I'm a recent college graduate. I do A LOT of writing and sometimes PowerPoint presentations, so I'm gonna need to make heavy use of Microsoft Office. I'd also like to do some light graphic design and video editing. I plan to use the basic Apple video editor + Adobe Photoshop and maybe InDesign. I listen to a lot of music and occassionally watch some shows/movies. I kinda take a lot of photos and video so I'll be uploading a lot of those. I do plan to travel with it somewhat, but not all the time. Btw, this will also be my main computer. I want it to last me a while, unlike the HP which is only good for a year then starts having problems. Suggestions?

I currently have a 2 year old 13" MBP with a 256GB Samsung SSD and 8GB of RAM. It has been so long since I've used a DVD or CD that I'm considering removing the optical drive and adding a second hard drive since 256GB is a bit of a squeeze for me. I've always tended to keep my Mac notebooks 24-30 months and then sell them with a bit of AppleCare extended warranty left - which tends to reassure the new owner. It is looking like this notebook has at least another year of life for me - and it is my main computer.
If I were in the market today I'd take a hard look at the MBA mostly due to the long battery life. The trade-off is a computer that's not upgradeable and not being able to add RAM concerns me. I started out with 4GB with this current machine and upgraded it to 8GB after installing Lion. The SSD has made a big difference, but still; with only 4GB of RAM will the Air take me 21/2 years? Since my notebook has become my main machine, while I find the Air tempting, I'd probably go with another MBP since it can accept both hard drive and RAM upgrades.
