Macbook air getting loud
is it normal for my brand new macbook air to get really loud when I'm playing non-intensive games from the app store?
Yes that is normal.
“During processor intensive activities—such as processing HD video or playing a game that makes extensive use of the graphics processor—the fans speed up to provide additional airflow.”

When I'm streaming videos from my Macbook Air to my AppleTV, my Macbook Air gets rather hot and the fan works hard and is loud trying to keep the laptop cool. Is this harmful to the laptop? Is this normal?
My MBA fans start running when I play video too - the CPU's video processor is working pretty hard to decode the video. The fans job is to provide better airflow. The time to worry is when you play video and the fans don't run.

why is my macbook air getting so hot, fan running, and burning through the battery fast?
I have started to experience my computer getting really hot also. Since one month back in time it has started to get raging hot (up to 99 degrees celsius) just by surfing the internet. Sometimes it stays that hot but most of the time the temperature gets lower after about 15 minutes..
this has never happend before and i am starting to get worried..
what is the problem and is there a sollution?? -
why my macbook air getting so hot, fan running, and burning through the battery fast?
are you playing intense games on your Air?
If so, that would be the reason

How hot do macbook airs get?
I was wondering if macbook airs get really hot when being used often because i have a macbook pro and it does get pretty hot and i need to put a pillow underneath it and i was hoping that if I got a macbook air it wouldn't get so hot. Also, is a 13" better for writing papers and gaming better than an 11" ???

don't put a pillow under it, you may be blocking the exhaust vents which could make it run even harder. It should be used on a flat, hard surface such as a table.

Yes, they can tend to run hot. A 13" would be better than an 11" for gaming purely do to the larger screen. For writing papers, either would be sufficient. -
I have an iMac and a Macbook Air. Both are running Snow Leopard 1.6.8. If I upgrade my iMac, will my Macbook Air get the update free of charge from the Mac App Store? Is it similar to buying an app on one iDevice and getting it free of charge on another iDevice with the same iTunes account?
Yes, indeed it is the same. But you must use the EXACT SAME Apple ID account on both machines for the Upgrade.
Hope this helps -
Does the macbook air get hot from use?
I am considering purchasing a Macbook Air. I have had problems with notebook PC's in the past getting very hot.
Does the Macbook Air get hot from use?Yes, well, virtually every computer has a fan in it; many fail their mission.
Now that you mention it, I saw no grill or mesh anywhere when I looked at the MBA at the Apple Store. Is it where the lid meets the body? I didn't see speakers, either, although I heard music. -
Macbook Air gets really sluggish and incredibly slow
Hi, my Macbook Air bought last December (2008) becomes very sluggish, as in really slow after some very light usage.
It usually happens when I'm watching a YouTube video (or any .flv video) in either Firefox or Safari or if I'm browsing for a long period. It's not just the browser that becomes slow, it's the whole computer. The video cannot be watched and it becomes all jittery. Switching between tabs takes a while, and even scrolling down a page has a delay. Typing also has a delay, and the whole experience is just horrible. Moving along the dock, the icons magnify at irregular intervals and launching an application takes extremely long, even the System Preferences Pane.
The happens whether I have three or four applications open with twenty tabs in Firefox or with just my browser and only two tabs. Along with the sluggishness, the fan starts very loud and to get rid of the slow behavior and loud fan noise (the noise wouldn't bother me, but I associate it with slow, slow problems) I have to flip the lid down and leave it go to sleep. When I return, watching the video is ok for a while, but if I have to pause it to do something else or if I do something other than view light web pages like change tabs, the computer slows again.
It's a Macbook Air 1,1 with a 1.6GHz processor and 2GB of ram. I have 50GB of the 73GB of hard drive space empty.
I recently updated it and left if off for a couple of days, but this hasn't helped.
There are only two applications which open when I log-in also, so I have no idea what the **** the problem could be.
Any ideas, and what could I do to fix it?
Your help is EXTREMELY appreciated by this very frustrated Air owner!
Thanks,
Ed.My first generation Air was sluggish from day one. Part of the problem is overheating, you can see that in the Activity Monitor as process 'kernel_task' taking 150% CPU or more. My fist generation machine crashed a lot, but that was eventually fixed with a firmware update that I suspect made the machine even slower. If I lift my machine up and hold it against a table fan, I can watch the 'kernel_task' CPU % claim down to almost zero.
I suspect another defect with the Air is the disk I/O system. I know the disk is not supposed to be the fastest, but if you have one application that do anything on the disk, everything else slows down to a halt. DMA (direct memory access) was invented 1989 or earlier, so I really don't know why the CPU should stall when some I/O is ongoing. It is so frustrating to watch a CPU load of 20%, have two CPUs, and still have a machine that is so sluggish that it is practically unusable.
I'm a double idiot, because when my first MacBook Air broke (the common hinge problem) I bought a second generation one, thinking that Apple fixed the problems. To be sure I was not the cause, I did a clean install.
Now I sit here tilting my almost new MacBook Air to give free airflow under my machine by my table fan, and still can't really use more than one application at the time, constantly restarting web browsers to be able to scroll pages, exactly the same problems as the first one.....
I have hopes for Snow Leopard fixing part of my problems, the disk I/O problem, but who knows.
I do think I will buy a new copy of CoolBook, the tool that saved me with my first MacBook Air. If underclocking and undervolting, it was kind of usable, could even watch videos!!!
Apple, please, fix MacBook Air!!!! -
I have MacBook Air 11 Inch.
It's get too hot whenever I used MacBook. Also whenever it gets hot my Mac get slow.
It was not like that when I bought it.
I like to format my Macbook Air. Like I like to have my MacBook air like first time I got it.
How i can do it?well you cant really fix that issue but if you run heavyt apps it tends to overheat but it will not damage the machine thats why they have fans to coll them off
if it gets really hot then take it to the apple store and there might be a problem with the cooling system -
Hello, recently I have noticed that my fan is loud, especially when I am watching youtube videos for example.
I have searched online but can't find an answer, I saw that you can help me if you get my activity monitor file, so here it is:

What is your definition of "good for gaming?" I think that's the biggest problem with any machine that features an integrated chipset. If you're looking to get 60 FPS in an 8-on-8 game of Modern Warfare 2 at ultra graphics settings, that isn't going to happen. What sort of games do you play? What are you requirements/expectations. If the purposes for this machine exceed 50% "for gaming" you really need to consider the 15" MBP with a dedicated GPU, the differences are quite significant. -
Why my brand-new macbook air getting so slow on internet connection?
My mba getting so slow all the sudden, it take me at least 20 sec to get on Google page. anybody can tell me what is wrong?
Have to say comparing this thread to many others that it isn't just the internet and wireless connection. I'm just about ready to throw my new Macbook in the garbage as this has been an ongoing issue since I bought it. And it's not the connectioon as anyone else coming in to our home is able to connect easily, Google TV runs just fine, the only device with issues is the MacBook. The hours I waste waiting for pages to load or trying to reconnect are numerous. Very dissappointed.
While this thread had a happy outcome, most of the others are like my situation where the problem doesn't get resolved. If the standard PCs and windows can work fine why doesn't a Mac. I feel duped and dumped twice as much money into a device that doesn't work as good as the less expensives laptops with Windows.

Macbook Air suffering loud fan, extremely slow
Hi,
I'm using a MBA Mid 2013 (warranty ended by June 31), and below is my story (verry sorry if it's long and waste your time).
By the third week of June, my MBA got a problem with the sound. Since it's still in warranty duration, so i took it to an Apple authorized service center in my place. They kept it for a week, and after that, my MBA's sound problem gone. But:
Actually, I made some quick tests in that center, and everything seems normal. So that, i closed my MBA and left the center.
When i got home, i opened my MBA to retouch some photos, but the MBA is extremely slow (opening a photo in Preview took around 1 min), and the fan went crazily loud.
I opened the Activity Monitor. Surprisingly, there's a process named kernel_task was taking ~300% of the CPU, thousands of the CPU time.
I did some research in the community, and found a solution: "Reset SMC". I tried that solution and magically, the problem has gone. So that, i thought it was just a software problem, instead of a hardware one.
The warranty expired...
The first half of July:
Everything seems OK and my MBA is stable.
The previous week:
The kernel_task error seems back. At first, i repeated the SMC reset solution and it still worked. But few times later, that solution turned useless.
Although my Mac was still usable, but during the kernel_task error, it's very slow that i could not do anything. Sometime, the kernel_task automatically turned normal (and my Mac is fast again).
At that time, i tried a list of other solutions and found something:
- Reset PRAM: The key combination was very hard to be succeed. Mostly, my MAC normally boot to the OS.
- Safe mode: Same.
- Recovery: Same.
- Apple Hardware Test: Same. But, in a success one, the result said that there is a problem with my thunderbolt (When i check in the System Information, the thunderbolt part said that No Hardware Found...??).
So, I guess that there's few problem with the OS.
So that, in the previous weekend, i tried to re-install the OS (Maverick). My Mac seems normal again.
But today, after a sleep - wake cycle (close, and open the Mac screen), the kernel_task disaster was back.
In this evening, i tried to re-install the OS once again, with a different installation. But... the problem seems more serious.
When i booted by a usb to install OS, the fan still loud and my mac still slow, which lead to the OS install could not be completed (stuck at 13%). And now, i almost cannot even choose the Startup Disk. Although i pushed and pressed the option key, my Mac will automatically boot to the Utilities for restoring the OS (because i formated that Mac partition).
Now, i'm very disappointed and confused. My mac is slow and the fan is loud anytime, i cannot install the OS. A software (perhaps?) error now turns to a hardware (perhaps?) error?
Could someone please tell me what is that error, and is there anyway to fix it?
Thank you in advance!Well, when you use a secondary display you are making the graphics processor work harder. That would explain the fan noises. Also, be aware of where you place the comptuer. Try not to block the back so it can vent and not place it near other warm devices.

Had to perform disc repair a couple of weeks ago and reinstall to defaults. At that time had spinning wheel when trying to start. Now have flashing folder icon with question mark, and cannot enter utilities or start from recovery USB. Totally stumped at this point.
You have not mentioned whether or not you are following procedure to switch to a different boot disk. Try holding down the option key while booting, and then all possible bootable disks will display, and allow you to choose the USB drive.

Macbook Air Terrible Battery Life
There are a series of threads on these forums regarding the rare case where Macbook Airs get terrible battery life on Mavericks, and some of them have numerous posts telling you to make a new thread about your specific issue. Here's mine.
The issues began when I did my initial Mavericks update. I had a series of really bad things happen, so I did a cmd+R reboot, and reinstalled the OS. It didn't help, so I scheduled a Genius appointment, and they wiped the drive and installed Mavericks clean.
All of the issues are gone now, except for one: my computer gets less than half the life it did on Mountain Lion. I used to get 14-16 hours of battery life on Mountain Lion when nothing was running. I just charged it to 100% and had just 6 hours of estimated life.
I've reset both the PRAM and the SMC, and neither helped. Might you have any further ideas on how to fix this?
Note: I know that Google Chrome is less energy efficient than other browsers. With that said, I used to still get well over 10 hours at 98-100% battery life on Mountain Lion with Chrome open. My usage of Google Chrome is a constant in this equation; this issue can't be so easily dismissed as being an issue with Chrome, I think.
Here's a screenshot showing a number of things (no apps being open, the poor battery life, and activity monitor)
