Macbook air hanging

my new macbook air is hanging up on me. while im on safari its automatically hanging wherein i cant move the mouse or even shut the device down. ihave to wait for a couple of minutes for it to work again. what to do about this? this is making me nuts!

If the machine is less than 90 days old or you have already bought AppleCare you can call AppleCare for some help,. The number is in your owners manual.
I suspect the issue is you have too many tabs open with not enough RAM or you have a process that is taking too much CPU. You can check how much FREE RAM the system has in Activity Monitor, in my experience OS X operates best where there is a minimum of 500MB of FREE RAM at all times. You can also use Activity Monitor to test to see if any applications are using too much %CPU.
If you are not familiar with Activity Monitor it is located in Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor.

My macbook air 2012 hangs randomly, when it happens the only thing i can do is push the power button and restart. I tought it was mavericks related so installed ML again but it still freezes sometimes. The log of the few minutes before the freeze:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook Air hangs when connected to an external main monitor

I have a Macbook Air the I connect to an external monitor as a main monitor using an HDMI to DVI cable. The configuration is equivalent to the LED display from Apple. The system works correctly while I am using it, but when it gets sleep, the system is unable recognize the external mouse/keyboard, and it hangs. I have disconnected the external monitor, disconnected and reconnected the USB and nothing works. The only way to recover the computer is to halt it using the power button and power it on another time.
I have also put the computer to not sleep if it is connected to mains. It still sleeps.
Does any one know how to solve this problem?

    I do not know.
What I know is that if I suspend the machine, it recovers correctly, but if it suspends itself, it is not able to return to normal activity. It seems like it is unable to remember that it has to use the external monitor and peripherals in the second case.

  • 11" Macbook Air Hanging Wifi when attached to 27" Cinema Display

For the last week I've been encountering the problem: I've replaced my wireless router with the new Extreme, I've changed the channels on that router. I've deleted my locations file in my network prefs and established fresh locations. All my software is up-to-date. My other devices (iPhone 5, PCs, iMac, etc.) are downloading and uploading things smoothly. It is only the air that essentially just takes 30 seconds to connect to servers and then it eventually does. It's not my browser caches--it is system-wide (Unenet, FTP, etc.). I've noted the problem the most when the air is attached to my 27" Apple Cinema Display. I've used different routers and the problem still exists. The genius looked at me funnily when I took it in and she suggested that I just delete my location files in the Network Pref. I can't tell you how many times I've done this. And it works for 60 seconds, then I monitor it closely and the wifi automatically slows again. Help!

  • Macbook Air Hang after normal boot.

my MBA is year end 2011 version 10.6.8. it boots normally to desktop. Once in desktop it will hang. hang for about 2 to 5 minutes before when back normal. You cant click or do anything for about 2- 5 minutes. Pls advise. TQ

When your drive is corrupted to the extent that Disk Utility cannot repair there are two basic possibilities: 1) the computer is being force quit and/or shut down improperly or 2) the hard drive is failing.
Now that you've done a clean install and presumably got the MBA running okay again I suggest that you pay attention to how many times (if any) you get a kernel panic (the dark screen with the message to restart your computer in lots of languages) or the computer freezes and you have to hold down the power button until the computer shuts down. Also, run Disk Utility once or twice a week and click on the Verify Disk button (not verify disk permissions) to check the drive's health. While you have Disk Utility open, click on the hard drive and check the S.M.A.R.T. Status. If it fails, you know the drive is going bad. The problem with SMART is that it often doesn't report fail when the drive is going bad so it isn't perfect.

My 2012 Macbook Air 13 (512/2.0ghz/8gb) crashes (kernel panic) after the SMC update.  It crashes when you open it after it has been sleeping for about 8 hours.  It does this after it sits for about 8 hours closed (sleeping) on battery and while plugged in.  It is easy to replicate, it happens every day when I come in to work and then when I open it to work in the evening.  I have submitted the crash report to Apple each time it happens and explained the circumstances which caused it to crash.  Anyone else having this issue?  I'm on 10.8 and applied the recent SMC update.  It never did this on Lion (what it shipped with).
Are there any power nap logs I can check to see if that is causing the issue?  Can I disable power nap to try that?

im having the same issue as you zaze. my march 2012 macbook air hang every single time when it try to wake up from sleep mode. it started to happen after i upgrade to mountain lion and then the smc update. i believe is the smc update[power nap specifically] issue, because before that patch the Mountain Lion OS is doing fine[i update the smc patch a week after it was release so i'm pretty sure is tht smc patch issue.
tire of playing around with the config, on this and off tht, it does not help at all and still hang[keyboard not responding , screen hang, sometimes cursur can move but it can do nothing with it].
i need to go through this multiple times a day until i so fed up that i change sleep mode to kick in after it idle for 1 hour.

  • Power Nap Not Showing in Energy Settings of my 2012 MacBook Air

I've updated to Mountain Lion, I have a new 2012 MacBook Air. Is anyone else able to see these settings? I can do a spotlight search for power nap, and it takes me to energy settings, but I get nothing else.

  • Bootcamp hangs when installing Windows 7 on Macbook Air

I purchased a new Macbook air less than 1 month ago. 256GB SSD drive, maximum RAM. It's running OS X Lion (10.7.1). I plugged in a USB DVD drive, keyboard, and mouse.
When trying to install Windows 7 64-bit Bootcamp Assistant creates the partition, creates the windows driver disk, then reboots to install windows from my retail version of Windows 7 Home Premium (DVD.) It hangs with the progress bar about 10% of the way across. The message "windows is loading files" is displayed. I waited a full 45 minutes but nothing changed. Help!

Look at your SSD. See if there is an issue, firmware update, etc.
not all SSDs work - some work in one OS and not the other, the Mac 2011s have been known to have issues with their SATA3 cable interface and chipset.
Apple and Intel and others have all issued fimrware updates.
In some cases people have just sent back their MBP because they were such problem, and that just running Mac OS, not even Windows.

i want to turn my macbook air off. the shut down button already appeared but the mouse/cursor just hang and won't work. even after pressing the enter button to shut my mac off won't work. what will i do?

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

  • ITunes is hanging my MacBook Air on program start

Recently, starting iTunes causes my computer to hang. The window opens, I get about 10-15 seconds of interactivity, then the machine enters a totally frozen state - no cursor movement, does not respond to Command-Option-Esc, etc. Have to power down and reboot.
Have deleted .plists, all iTunes library and Genius files, and reinstalled iTunes to no effect.
Latest MacBook Air, OS X 10.6.7, iTunes 10.2.1.
Any insight appreciated. Thanks for the time.

My MacBook Air running on Snow Leopard gets extremely slow (almost like a hang, except if you wait about half an hr, it actually moves) after login interface. Sometimes it never gets past the background of the homepage, desktop doesn't seem to load. After multiple forced shut downs and left to run for hours, sometimes the desktop loads but the dock does not respond when applications are opened. The computer is then unable to shut down normally. Forced shut downs are necessary most times. Time machine backup takes extremely long, and attempts to use the time machine to bring the laptop back to the time befiore the problem arose was met with extremely slow and hung time machine function.
    Please help!

There isn't much besides a failing hard drive or other hardware fault that can cause those symptoms. Run the Apple Hardware Test, or just take it to an Apple Store for testing.

  • Installation hangs - OSX upgrade on MacBook Air

I am attempting to upgrade OSX on my MacBook Air.  The installation hangs at "Time remaining: Less than a minute" and eventually cycles off.  The error log indicates "missing CoreServices." This has been going on for > 24 hours.  Any advice?

Tried to upgrade a Macbook Air with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to Mavericks from the Apple store. Nothing seemed to happen when clicking on the dowload button and the request APPEARED to hang. The download button changed to a light grey for a few seconds, then came back as a clickable download button. There was no progress bar in the downloads section. This problem is known to Apple but was not solved as of November 1, 2014.
In fact, the upgrade download button did trigger the download.  The only indication one gets is in the dock, where the OS X icon will show only "Download... ".  There is a minuscule progress bar under the icon and it will take 30 minutes or so before progress starts to show in blue!
If you use an internet wire connection with a router (without other computers connected), rapidly blinking lights on the router will confirm high traffic to the MacBook Air.
The complete download took over 3 hours, via the USB/ethernet port. I also made sure the computer had power supplied by the wall charger.  For some reason, the download caused the light on the magnetic plug of the charger cable not to show red or green, and the battery remaining time was not operational on the computer screen.
Installation took more than double the time shown as remaining.  You just have to be patient.
After rebooting, the fan was constantly on and the battery remaining time was still not functional on the header bar. It took about an hour for Spotlight to re-index the computer.
All upgrade activities completed, after restarting the computer, the fan was running loudly and the battery remaining time was not working.
I tried the following as recommended for a similar problem reported after installation of Mountain Lion. By pressing Control-Shift-Option and the power button all at once for a second, the computer switched off.  Pressing the power button to restart the computer showed everything was back to normal: no fan noise, and the battery remaining time percentage works again.  Plugging in the charger also brought again the red charging light.

  • MacBook Air mid-2014 EFI Firmware 2.8 Hanging?

Has anyone had an issue with their Macbook Air (mid-2014 or other) hanging on boot (Apple logo and spinner) after downloading and installing the 2.8 firmware update?
I updated mine through Software Update. It's been sitting on that screen for at least 20 minutes now. I've tried rebooting and it just goes back to that screen.

    Thanks,

Erasing the partition, reinstalling Mavericks, and restoring from Time Machine seems to have done the trick.  At least I wasn't bricked.  But I would recommend having a fresh backup before the little notification from System Update (yes, this update came through System Update) pops up.  Hopefully my experience is unique.
