My Macbook Air hinge is broken. How to replace it.
Don't bother if it's not under warranty. I had the same problem. They wanted $440 for a whole new display. Bought a new Droid tablet for that price

TS2948 Does anyone have recent experience of getting a macbook air hinge replacement foc
Does anyone have recent (2013) experience of getting a macbook air hinge repaired FOC ?
I just tried to get my original MBA hinge repaired, but the Genius guy in Amsterdam said they stopped the replacement 1 1/2 years ago :-(
Would have been appreciated if Apple could update the original note to indicate the extended warranty on the hinge is no longer in effect. -
just got the Decoded leather cover for my Macbook Air (which is just beautiful with no covers!)
it got a leather and elastic straps that won't let the lid close completely (few mm gaps)
asy idea if this would harm or loosen the lid hinges over time?A: it wont let the lid close , I can tell that by looking without you telling me that that is so.
it can keep the unit from going into sleep because the magnetic reed switch isnt making contact with the magnet in the display to activate it.
if there is any hinge torque when close due to the gap from squeezing it while closed at the opening point, there could be an issue, but that requires firsthand examination, which I cannot see. -
Apple macbook air hinge defect -closing lid is considered accidental damage
Hi Apple
Is closing the screen normal operations of the macbook air?
my apple air has a defect with the hinge. could apple please change your policy to accept hinge as warrant on apple air models
purchased my air 28/2/2008 from Sydney Broadway apple shop. I think this was the first day they got delivery in Sydney.
Last week when closing the screen, it was about half way down, it made a crack noise, and the hinge moved. (see photo from link below)
I have been to two apple care centres in Saigon, Vietnam this week. Spoke to apple in singapore and usa. They all told me i broke it and the damage is accidental. Offically on paper it was "it might be accidental damage, warranty repair declined"
Many people have had this problem, mostly in USA.
Below is the link to a post i made on the problem. It has a photo of my laptop hinge, it is not as bad as others, because i stopped using the air as soon as it happened

PS. Apple Air is the BEST laptop yet for me personally. light, 13" screen, full size keyboard, multitouch huge touch pad, nice casing, no dvd player and osx
I have owned these laptops:
compact portable iii
dell latitude d600
toshiba portege 3500 tablet
fujitsu lifebook p7010
motion ls800 tablet
apple macbook airIf I can add my two cents... Mine broke just like the others on this thread, and almost like everybody else, the first genius I consulted with told me that it was accidental damage and that they won't cover it. I left the Apple Store and called Apple customer service, explained the situation, including the fact a 1800 $ computer shouldn't broke without reason, that there was multiple people on the internet with the same problem... a few days later, Apple called me to say that they will cover the display change under warranty. Still, i'm not impressed :
- The attitude of the first genius was very arrogant, telling me that I shouldn't try to "steal from Apple" by trying to cover accidental damage...
- When I got my MacBook Air back, the genius told me that they did put a new hinge design in there, which feels much more sturdy indeed. So if Apple changed the hinge design, they know there was a problem with the hinge, but they still won't change your failed hinge unless you complain : what kind of customer service is that ?
I'm feeling a class action over those first gen MacBook Air, really... 1800 $ gets you a computer that doesn't perform (kernel_task problem), with failing hardware (hinge defect).
By the way... mine have also a decoloration of the trackpad that Apple won't cover because they say it's "cosmetic". How ironic from a company who charge big preniums for design not to cover "cosmetic" issues. -
Anyone have any suggestions on repairing the broken hinges on a MacBook Air? The cheap plastic hinges on mine have broken and the monitor is about to fall off. Does anyone know why this obvious design flaw is not being covered under a warranty and have any suggestions of what to do? Everything else about the computer runs great so I don't need or want to buy a new computer because of a design flaw. Thanks for your help.
Ask Apple why it isn't covered. We as fellow users can not give you a definitive answer.

Hi all, the right hand side hinge of my 2.5 year old macbook air has broken into pieces, and cracked and broken pieces of plastic off the grey plastic tubular hinge interconnecting piece. Does anyone know if this is covered by any kind of warranty for faulty parts? the metal hinge has broken and the screen is literally hanging off, although the computer has suffered no abuse or any kind of hit, just normal and infrequent opening and closing!
As Tony recommended you need to contact AppleCare directly. But hopefully this thread will serve as a reference point - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1893302?start=0&tstart=0
If you go through it all (and it's very long) you'll see that covers over 2 years and more importantly has had mixed results from users. It looks like Apple is handling machines on a case-by-case basis. -
Macbook air hinge repair question please respond!!!!
Hey everyone, I have a question that hopefully someone can answer I've never sent anything into apple repair so don't know if they're a pain. Anyway in 2008 I bought a macbook air off of a guy I knew, he informed me there was a flaw which was the bottom right hand side of the bezel looked like bent a little toward the user, the computer worked fine and I love it! Anyway after like 8 months I opened it up and the left hinge thing cracked and this little piece came off??? I walked into an apple store while travelling without the air and talked to a genius he said its a common defect and they would fix it. I called tech support told. My story including the bezel thing and they said they would fix it.. should I be worried they will get it see the bezel and say well fix the hinge only somehow? What do you guys think? They can't be as liberal as dell who. Will repair anything...I mean I suppose once they get it they'll have to replace the bezel anyway because it seems to go together. The computer and hinge work 100% but. Would be sweet if repaired.. any thoughts? Sry for typing I'm on my mobile. O and I bought the air for 1000 still loving it..
I would suggest sending it in. I believe they will replace everything. They replaced parts on my MacBook once that I didn't think need replacing. Also, about six months ago, one fan went out in my current MacBook Pro. I called Apple on a Friday. Monday morning FedEx brought a box. The gal helped me pack it quick and she took it along back with her right away. Wednesday morning at 9:10AM she was back with it. Apple had replaced BOTH fans in it.

Late 2008 Macbook Air Hinge Problem
Hi guys, I bought a used Macbook Air a few months ago, I absolutely love it. However the hinge has been getting kinda loose, to the point where the screen will start to fall backwards if the laptop is moved at all. I am told Apple replaces the hinges for out of warranty Macbook Airs, but this one has dents in the corners from previous owners, although it is in good condition overall. The Apple store is very far from me, is it still worth my time to bring it in or is that automatically considered user damage?
Thanks!
RIP STEVE!Maybe, but not conclusively. Try it again, but for security I would make a backup if you don't already have one.
If the drive cannot be repaired this way, then you should erase the drive and reinstall OS X:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If this doesn't work then the drive should be replaced. -
Macbook Air hinge!!!
Hi guys!
I bought an apple macbook air mid 2013 13,3 core i7 8gb 512gb... And I have a problem with the hinge. When the computer's lid is closed and I apply pressure to the left side of the black hinge bar at the back of the computer it clicks. Can you guys that own a macbook air please try pressing and see if this is normal ?Mine sometimes clicks a bit as I close it but doesn't click as you describe. It doesn't sound like anything to worry about but you could take it in to be checked if you are concerned.

Lifetime warranty for macbook air hinge?
Is there a lifetime warranty for the original, first generation MacBook Air's hinge, like I've heard from some forums?
No. One year standard warranty which can be extended to three years with AppleCare.

Hello I am from Belarus and I have a MacBook Air (serial number: w8******y51) and I have a problem with the hinges (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2948) . In an authorized service center told me that I bought my MBA more that 3 years ago, so Apple Service Provider Comments say this not more eligible and service center can do not repair this MBA. BUT in service a guy said I should turn to support and they could give me a special code by which in service will repair my MacBook Air for free.
Question is how to obtain thi code. Apple communitie, please help me!
Anton.

Today (09/07/12) I took my 2008 MacBook air with broken hinge to the apple store here in Orlando fl, and the guy at the genius bar said that the end date for the two year grace period for fixing the MacBook air's hinge problems had ended two days ago. But he spoke to his manager and explained the problem they agreed to fix the MacBook and all the other problems for me and it's not going to cost me a dime to fix. And I should hear back from then in 3-7 days. So if u have a 2008 MacBook air with any hinge problems then take it in so they can try to fix it for you since it has been only 2 days since the grace period has ended.
