    Hi Fred,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

the thing is that when i did the clean install they did check with a hardware test first and nothing was wrong, i guess it was a false-positive, is there anything in the kernel report from which i can say it's either hardware or software related

Please try temporary connecting your printer to some other power socket, without using any power extention or hub.
If the same issue persists, contact the local HP Support center, as it seems like and hardware or Power Supply problem.

  • My MacBook Air chimes during startup but flashes a bar at the bottom then shuts down, is this a hard drive failure or a hard ware failure? Please help I miss my laptop

First generation MacBook Air running OSX 10.6.8

    Hi,
From what you describe it's certainly a Hard Drive failure so you'll definetely need to contact HP.  Personally, considering this is the 2nd HDD in under 2 months, I say it's either bad luck ( however unlikely ) or there is another issue at play - it may be worth suggesting this to HP when you contact them.

  • IPad won't turn on without power cable and when it does, it shuts down within a few minutes

This last weekend I went to visit my sister and when I came back, my iPad was turned off. I turned it on again and all seemed fine but then within a few minutes, it went straight back off. It won't start up without the power cable attached, and when it does, it says "No WiFi" in settings, not "Not connected", but it's greyed out and says "No WiFi". I did a restore which went OK, but when I was restoring it shut off too and the restore didn't carry through. I'm really worried! I can't visit an Apple Store for a week, so I just wanted to see if I could get a rough idea of what the problem is now?

Your iPad is in Recovery Mode.
    Follow the instructions here carefully:

  • How can i set a password on my power off button so no frinds can shut it down whith just 2 presses

i want to set a password so when u click on the power button and then enter it wont shut down if u dont write in the password first. and the resson i want this is becasue som classmates turn it of during lessons and its anoying, i have seen one on the train on m y way to the school

If you enable fast user switching, and then login to two accounts, the casual user will find that shutting down requires the admin password.
However, the "non-casual" (saavy) user always has the ability to shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds. There is nothing that can prevent that. It is "hard-wired" as an ultimate shutdown safety.

My MacBook Air is telling me that my startup disk is full so I am unable to download from iTunes. What can I do to fix this?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Start by doing an SMC reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 and see if that resolves it.

  • My 2011 Macbook Air is telling me it does not support the 10.8.2 software update

My 2011 Macbook Air is telling me it does not support the 10.8.2 software update

Hmm, there are some machines to which the presently available 10.8.2 updates don't apply, but since it's typically the newest ones (from 2012) and the update shows up in your Software Update, it should work on yours.
You may try taking it step by step:
Go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/#osxmountainlion and start at the bottom of the list with the 10.8.1 update. If that works, keep working up the list as far as relevant.
If you want to save time and hassle, or you get stuck with 10.8.1 already, follow this routine to re-install the system from the Recovery Partition. You should then get the latest and greatest. Don't forget to first make sure your backup is up-to-date!

  • My 5 year old MacBook Air is telling me it "cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn't enough space in your home folder.  Quit mail, delete files you don't need, then reopen mail."  What is "home folder," and which files to delete?

My 5 year old MacBook Air is telling me it "cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn't enough space in your home folder.  Quit mail, delete files you don't need, then reopen mail."  What is "home folder," and which files to delete? Thanks.

The home folder is where all of your personal files are kept.
Best candidates to delete are movies, videos, music and photos since they generally take the most space.
Don't forget to empry the Trash after you delete the file because the space is not returned until the Trash is emptied.

  • My wife spilled a glass of wine on her MacBook Air. Now it's completely dead, and won't even show it's charging...

My wife spilled a gas of wine on her MacBook Air . Now it's completely dead, and doesn't even show it's being charged.... Any advice is welcome .

Liquids and electricity don't mix. Any hope of surviving a spill is based on immediately turning the device off, getting it as dry as possible, and then letting it have a lengthy drying period. Some people recommend putting it in rice to absorb moisture though I think that has its own danger. At this point your only solution is to take it to an Apple repair center and see what it will cost to replace the logic board - and to hope that was the only damage.
Sorry I couldn't provide better news. Check your home owners policy to see if this is covered (and if it is worth using). I have a specific rider on my policy for electronic equipment which includes full replacement value with no deductible.
