Macbook Air kernel_task problem SOLVED (a least for me)

Hi,
Introduction:
I bought my MBA original (A1237) this January. Soon after the kernel_task problem arised - it consumed some 130% - 160% of CPU.
The problem did not occur when in Safe Mode. So I asembled a list of kexts that were running after normal boot but were not running in Safe Boot. I tried to remove them manually one-by-one .... with no result. The problem persisted.
Then I began to experience problems with the top case. First my powerbutton died, then the trackpad started to behave crazy and finally my keyboard refused to work as whole.
So I bought another A1237, with cracked LCD. I disassembled both computers (using ifixit.com guides - it is really not difficult!) and put my screen assembly (the whole piece with hinges etc.) to the new-bought computer. Unfortunately the logic board had EFI password on and the seller did not know it
I've been going crazy and as a last resort I removed the logic board and replaced it with my original logic board.
Well - now it works No kernel_task problem, the comp has been now running for 24 hrs and both cores are performing between 5 and 50%.
WHY did it work?
I don't know.
The top case problem probably had nothing to do with it. It just happened by the way.
Well, many users have reported this problem as a CPU temperature related.
The only thing I can imagine is that the thermal paste, that assures thermal conductivity between the cores and the heatsink was "worn", old, dried, cracked... This can happen when it is exposed to low temperatures. The cores overheat then. My system reported CPU temp between 30-50 Celsius, but I think that this is measured at the heatsink, not at the CPU directly.
Solution you may want to try:
Disassemble your Air to the point where you remove the heatsink. Remove the thermal paste from both the CPUs and the heatsink a replace it with a new layer. (My paste cost some $5.) Then put it all back together. Use guides at www.ifixit.com, there is guide for applying the thermal paste too. You will need just a tiny screwdriver.
I cannot tell for sure that this will work for you but I simply cannot imagine anything else, that could have solved the problem for me. Sometimes it is probably just disassemble-reassemble.
Unfortunately I have no clue why the kernel_task problem did not occur when in Safe Mode.
Well, that's all I know. I know a little but am happy to have it working in the end...

Seems to be related with AppleHDA Audio Codecs (old ones from OS10.8 work), that's why when you guys unplug the headphones the CPU level cames to normal levels. This problem is still not solved.
I've been chating with some Apple amployees about it and they say it's a Maverick's problem. I've said them that so many people is having this problem in Apple's official forums and they reccommend me to say you guys to open a "Feedback Bug Report" in Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
They told me that in the forums where you guys explain this issue, they don't read it them all, and the worst of all, apple enginyeers don't read them. So, i reccommend you to open a Bug Report in order to let them know about this problem and giving them enough information to solve it.
Thanks

  • Has your Macbook Air overheating problems been solved?

    Hi All,
Has there been a solution to the Macbook Air overheating problem for you?
I'm considering selling my MBA but want to see first if there has been any new updates on this issue.
I have a Macbook Air with the specifications as follows:
Model: MacBook Air 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Production year: 2008
    Production week: 15 (April)
    OS X Version 10.5.7
Have had the computer for about a year now and it has been constantly overheating and becoming more or less unusable when doing so. Have been hoping upgrades to the software would solve this eventually but that does not seem to have happened.
As I'm writing this room temperature is about 20 degrees celcius. Laptop sits on a table with power cable plugged in. Not running any external screen. There is no video streaming or music playing. Only the Firefox browser and a few more idle apps are active such as Mail and Skype (in the background). Even under these conditions the fan is currently running loud at 6100rpm and the Macbook Air is very hot underneath.
CPU temperature is currently 54 degrees Celsius. Both cores seem to be active.
Now, as an experiment I will head over to YouTube to watch a video and open up Microsoft Word in the background, a perfectly normal usage for a computer this new. This is what happens:
The computer starts to become painfully slow. After for example clicking an item in the browser there is a 1-3 second delay before the click actually becomes effective. It's now so hot underneath that I would not want to keep it in my lap. It is hard to use the mouse pointer properly as it does not update in realtime, I have to assume where it will land based on my movements. When scrolling, the spinning wheel icon becomes active. Everything is now happening in slow motion.
Video is lagging heavily. I can only see probably 1 out of every 10 frames or less of the video. All applications running are very slow. CPU temperature is now 64 degrees celsius. Fan is at 6200. Computer is now unusable for me. When I scroll a page in the browser it takes about 2-3 seconds before anything happens. Changing tabs takes 5-6 seconds after I click them. I will have to shut it down before re-starting and resuming work. When room temperature is even higher on a hot day needless to say everything gets a lot worse quicker.
Is this normal for Macbook Air's? If that is the case they are more or less unusable for most types of normal 2009 year usage (video, audio, browsing, office work etc).
What solutions have you found? Coolbook? Software/Firmware updates? Hardware changes? Please let me know if you have been able to make your MBA not overheat under normal usage.

    Hi Everybody,
Thanks for your replies to start with.
I have tried to install Coolbook now and has it running. When using 'throttling' and letting it change CPU speeds (I think..) the problem still remains. When watching a video or other demanding task the temperature goes way up. Running a CPUTest (small or big) gets CPU temperatures of up to 84-85 C. Fan of course at 6200rpm all the time.
Right now, I have Coolbook set to 800Mhz and 0.9V. Apps running are Firefox, Skype, Mail and iTunes with no audio playing. CPU temperature at 56 c and fan speed (as usual) at 6200rpm. I can use the computer now. It is still lagging and not very fast at all. Sometimes text appear 1-2 seconds after I have written it on the keyboard.
So Coolbook has made a difference for me, but only when putting the CPU speed down to 800MHz. I wouldn't call reducing the CPU speed to half a 'solution' though and will not keep that as a long term solution. Reducing voltages for higher CPU-speeds 0.9875V for 1600MHz does not work, it still heats up massively.
Have used the MBA for the whole day today and can't recall a single time the fan has not been around 6200rpm except right after boot.
Thanks for the tips on upgrading to 10.5.8. I will try that right away and let you know how it works out.
Have also considered buying some cooling device but just as you say that feels like a bit of a last thing to resort to.
I'm surprised Apple hasn't responded stronger to this. Had this happened in the car industry we would have seen thousands of cars being sent back to the garage to be fixed.
If this only has to do with some specific production weeks then the right thing to do would be for Apple to let those people have their computers either fixed or replaced.

Reset the SMC, then test your MacBook Air again.
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

My MacBook Air has problems connecting to a saved network when I first open it. When it idles, the connection gets lost and even clicking on the network won't connect it. Then I have to turn off wireless and turn it back on for it to connect. My boyfriend's MacBook Pro does not have this same problem and this problem started maybe 2 months ago and nothing about our internet or router has changed, and its only my computer having the problem. Its a 2013 MacBook Air and my softward is: OS X 10.9.1 (13B42). Please help!

    Hello, nheredia05.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a couple steps that I could recommend trying.  Power cycle the router and test to see if the behavior persists.  Next, try an remove this prefered network from your list and then add it back again.  Make sure all firmware updates have been processed on the router side and the settings have been optimized for performance.  If the issue still persists try the steps in the second article.

My MacBook Air is in a support profile for one of my Apple IDs while all my other devices are in a support profile for a different one of my Apple IDs; how can I combine under one?

Actually, this can be done without merging Apple IDs, as I found just by trying this out: I went into the support profile for the Apple ID that had only my Mac listed. I then chose to disassociate the Mac from that Apple ID. I signed out and signed in using my other Apple ID (the one with all my other Apple devices). I chose to add/register a new device, entered my Mac's serial number, and now it is associated with all my other Apple devices under a single Apple ID. No merger of Apple IDs required.

I logged onto my MacBook Air and it is asking me for my "local items" keychain password for several different things. I do not know what this is or how to get rid of it. Please help. Thanks.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, testing after each one, until it's resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Follow the directions in this support article.
    Step 2
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.
    Step 3
Open the Keychains folder as in Step 1. There should be a file in that folder with the name "login.keychain". If there is also a file iwith the name "login_renamed_1.keychain", then please do as follows:
    Rename login.keychain to "login-old.keychain".
    Rename login_renamed_1.keychain to "login.keychain".
You can then close the folder.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Delete the login keychain from the keychain list. Choose Delete References when prompted, not Delete References & Files.
    Select
    File ▹ Add Keychain...
from the menu bar. Add back the file now named "login.keychain". If any of your needed keychain items are missing from it, also add back the file now named "login-old.keychain". I suggest you transfer any needed items from that keychain to the login keychain, then delete it. The transfers are made by drag-and-drop in Keychain Access. You'll need to enter your password for each item transferred.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

Plug it in and leave it on the charger for about 5 minutes then try to turn it on. If that doesnt work, contact apple and have it sent out for repair or take it to your local apple store. they will probably cover it for free if no physical damage has been done.

  • Any resolution for new macbook air hibernation problem?

I know this problem has started to surface online where the macbook air goes into sleep but doesn't wake and the only option is to hold the power key to reboot.
After having read posts, resetting PRAM and SMC, I still am encountering this issue.
Has anybody found any solution that has worked or is this a machine or software defect?
    Thanks

I have the exact same problem. Has it been confirmed that this is a software issue and not hardware related?

  • MacBook Air kernel_task using 130 to 150 % CPU overload with fan overheat

After hours and hours to get a diagnostic for this problem, I have solve it.
It seems to be a troubleshooting with the Apple ETHERNET to USB adapter used thru an USB Powered hub (A Kensington here)...
    My configuration was:
    MacBook Air 1.8Ghz SSD
Wireless BT Apple Keyboard (Aluminum) and Mouse
    24" Apple Display (DVI)
    USB USB Powered
iPod Classic 80 Go used by iTunes and Time Machine for Backups
    __!! Apple Ethernet/USB Adapter !!__
    Canon Pixma USB Printer
Overload CPU with kernel_task up to 150% was cycling.
That's the first reason of the difficulty to diagnose it.
Because the adapter was so hot I couldn't even touch it, I thought it was probably in charge of this mess.
Reading some forums, it's possible that there's multiple reasons for an overload CPU time by the kernel_task and this is one of these.
If you encounter messes with kernel_task using an Apple Ethernet/USB adapter, check it first to do anything else.
    Hope to have help you...

it seems to be temperature issue, i.e. the system tries with the kernel task to avoid an overheating of the cpu/gpu. those guys here

I want to use my MacBook Air as an external disk to my iMac. I talked to Apple care and we solved it by connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the two computers. I then turn on the MacBook Air while pressing the "T" and it works. I can sit and work on my iMac and grab/change/save the files that are in my MacBook Air EXCEPT for the Microsoft Office files. I called Microsoft and they can't solve it. They say it might be a problem with the Thunderbolt cable. Has anybody have this problem?
Both computers are 2011 and they both have Office 2011.
    Thanks in advance,

For Word it says "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, /)"
For Excel it says "the file could not be found. Check te spelling of the filename, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure hat the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted.
