MacBook Air looses connection progressively faster

My MBA has been having problems maintaing the wireless connection. When I turn the computer on, I might be able to keep it going up to 30 minutes, but it seems to me that it gets worse as it warms up. I've tried propping it up so that it has some ventilation and it seemed to help, but at this point I am not sure.
Originally I thought it was my wireless connection that it was failing, but I spent one hour and 47 minutes with my IP yesterday trouble shooting the connection and their conclusion was that it had to be something about airport and I am inclined to agree with them.
Anybody else that is experiencing the problem getting worse the longer you have the computer on?

Sea Air,
The reason I ask about your location is the problem is possibly wireless interference in your home/office. Often times when troubleshooting wireless it's important to isolate the location you're connecting as the problem. For example...
In my home I have Comcast cable high-speed internet and my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I'm 13-15 feet from the base station with direct line-of-sight to the router. My connectivity over WiFi is 30% slower versus if I hard wire to the same router. Occasionally, I'll even lose signal if my neighbor is online (he only has his router on when he's at home and connected). However if I take that same machine to a local Apple store with no wireless interference the machine is 40% faster (obviously the store's connection is faster) and I never lose speed or connectivity.
So with all that being said, it's possible that the connectivity is interference based. What sort of protection are you using on the router you're connecting to? WEP? WPA? WPA2? Open?
From my experience you'll want to avoid WEP as your encryption type and if you're using a 3rd party router like a Netgear or Linksys you'll also want to disable any of the "gimmick" features like Range Extender and Speed Boost. I've found that Macs don't play well with those enabled.
Lastly, you can download an application called iStumbler98 (from VersionTracker.com or Google it). Run that application and you'll be able to see all the various networks in your area and the channels they're operating on. If you're all on the same channel (routers that is), you might want to consider changing your router's channel as that often times can greatly assist.
Good luck!

How to turn off screen on Macbook Air when connected to Led monitor screen?

The only way you can turn it off is to close the lid - so you would need an external wired or wireless keyboard and mouse/trackpad attached.

  • I have a BTHub4 - My iMac, iPhone, and children's iPads all connect to the internet no problem. I cannot get my 2 MacBook Pros or my partners MacBook Air to connect. Have tried diagnostics - says to change DNS but  it is correct.

I have a BTHub4 - My iMac, iPhone, and children's iPads all connect to the internet no problem. I cannot get my 2 MacBook Pros or my partners MacBook Air to connect. Have tried diagnostics - says to change DNS but  it is correct. I have re-set both router and all laptops - no joy. They can all see the network but cannot connect.

This is extraordinary. I have moved the router and also tried resetting it to its factory strings.  We have had this router for over a year and all our devices have always worked. Now all four laptops will not connect to the internet. Only one oMac and our phones and iPad.
I have had far more devices running at once before but now all laptops are timing out on connection. Some say this iIP address is already being used but if I manually set to a slightly different IP address it does not help, noir if I manually set to the correct IP address. Why would all our laptops (four) suddenly be unable to connect?

  • Macbook air hdmi connection problem

I cannot get my macbook air to connect to my tv via an hdmi cable. I suspected my cable until my neighbor had the same issue. Have others experienced this and is there a solution?

I have had this same problem. Has the wifi worked before? What I did was I turned my wifi off, then I restarted my computer, then I turned my wifi back on. If that doesnt work, leave the wifi off, and shut it down for a while. Hope I could help!

  • Macbook Air wont connect to HDTV

I use a MiniDisplay to VGA connector when I use my macbook air to connect to a monitor. My macbook is detecting its there, is there a certain setting on a TV that I would need to switch

That depends on the TV. You'll have to research its instruction manual.

  • Macbook Air loses connectivity every time it sleeps.

For about a month now my Macbook Air loses connectivity to wifi whenever it goes to sleep. I have it connected to my personal wifi and when I leave the MBA idle it goes to sleep after 15 mins. When I wake the computer it is still connected to my wifi, but the connectivity is gone. I have to turn airport off and then turn it back on. It regains connectivity immediately after that every time. However, it obviously shouldn't do that and it is annoying because it interrupts my downloads. I have tried playing around with the settings and reading the discussion boards. While people have had similar issues, none have been exactly the same and none of the troubleshooting has worked. Wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or fixes for this. Thanks in advance!

    Hello BrettG81,
I know that can be frustrating when your MacBook Air does not maintain a Wi-Fi connection. There are a few things that you can try to get it working again. I know you have done some looking at your settings and possibly some adjustments, but go over the first article as some of the troubleshooting for OS X Snow Leopard and Lion can be helpful. Another troubleshooting option is to create a new network location and test it out to see if you still have the same issue. All the steps are linked below.

Sorry to hear about your issue. Try working through the document I linked below and see if it resolves the issue.
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection
If this does not resolve the issue post back and include some more information about your wireless setup. Items like brand of router and type of encryption you are using would be very helpful. Thanks!

  • MacBook Air Display connection problem

Hi,I recently got a MacBook Air (late 2010) used 9my dad gave it to me ).
When I shut the computer's display it sometimes doesn't illuminate when I wake it I tried entering the password even though I can't see.
And then i can vaguely make out my desktop or the apps.I recently discovered that by moving the whole computer it would illuminarte again i'm thinking that there is a loose connection between the screen and the motherboard.
I'M RUNNING OSX 10.7.2 AND EVERYTHING IS UP TO DATE I'M VERY PICKY ABOUT THAT IF MORE INFO IS NEEDED JUST ASK.
    I would appreciate any response,
    -Georges

  • Macbook Air only connects to the internet for a few seconds at a time.

My 2013 Macbook Air (10.8.5) will only connect to the internet for a few seconds. It recognizes the wifi, but will just timeout when trying to access a website. If I turn Wifi off and then back on, it will work for another few seconds, only for the same issue to come up. I've tried EVERY SINGLE troubleshooting tip I could find and nothing works. I've renewed DCHP, rebooted my Mac, rebooted the router, network diagnostics, everything. I've scanned with Sophos multiple times and nothing has been detected. My 2007 MacBook Pro works just fine on the network as well as my roommates Macbook and my Apple TV. I have no clue how to fix it and am praying someone knows what to do. Please help!

Start by getting rid of "Sophos," which is worse than useless.
Remove the Sophos product by following the instructions on this page, and also this one, if applicable. If you have a different version, the procedure may be different.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • MacBook Air - Cannot connect to Ethernet Computers on WiFi Network

I just bought a new MacBook Air (11 inch) less than a week ago. Love it, its great. I am however having an issue with connecting it to computers on the same network, but only if those computers are connected to the network via ethernet (while the Air is on wifi).
I have an older MacBook (2.2Ghz running 10.7.2 also) with no issues connecting to other computers over the wifi if they are on ethernet. My old MacBook and the Air can also communicate no problem over wifi, but if I connect my old MacBook to the ethernet connection I cannot ping it from the Air.
The reason why this is important is because I am trying to hook the Air up to a buffallo linkstation to setup TimeMachine like I have it set up on my old MacBook.
I am using a Buffallo WZR2-G300N Router as my gateway and access point (I also have a D-Link switch, but I have by-passed that to troubleshoot the issue). Firmware is up to date.
The Air also has no problem connecting to the internets.
Any ideas oh Apple Support Community?? Many thanks in advance.

Try using Finder > Go > Connect to Server > smb://ipaddress. If you can connect this way, then good. I'll have more to say later. Just try to get this working for now.
    Before trying to connect:
    On the XP machine.
    1. Right-click on a folder to share (e.g., My Documents), chose Sharing, and select both Sharing Options.
    2. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
See how this part goes. I can't remember where some things are in XP, but you may have to enable Network Discovery somewhere.
    On the Vista machine.
    1. Go > Computer > Users > User; right click on the User folder, and choose the settings that give Everyone—both Read/Write permissions.
    2. Go Control Panel > Network and Sharing Options > Turn on network discovery, Turn on file and printer sharing, Turn off public folder sharing , and Turn off password protected sharing (unless sharing won’t occur without turning it on).
    2. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
See how this part goes too. I can't remember some of the detail in Vista.
    On the Sno machine,
    1. Go System Preferences > Sharing > Check File sharing > Go Options > Enable SMB sharing.
    2. Go System Preferences > Network > Select Airport or Ethernet depending on what you are going to be using. I am assuming you will be using wireless below. Let me know if not true.
    3. Having selected Airport, select ask to join new networks and show Airport status in menu bar.
    4. Click advanced > click remember networks this computer has joined > Click Wins > Enter the ip address of your Win7 machine in the WINS server box > Enter the Win7's workgroup name in the workbook box unless it already is there (look in the drop down menu too). In all likelihood the name is workgroup, but check on the Win7 machine.
    5. Restart
