Macbook air mainboard failed

I have a macbook air from 16 months ago
suddenly it´s stopped working.
I took the Macbook to Apple technical support in Chile (MacOnline) and the support people reviewed the equipment and the diagnosis was that the motherboard is faulted, the cost of repairing the equipment is the same as buying a new computer which does not have make sense.
I am very disappointed in the quality of the Mac Air, I can not believe that only worked for 16 months
anyone know if there is a manufacturing defect associated with this model?

a recall by Apple does not exist as of yet for this model, so no.

  • Please help! - Macbook Air that failed repair disk process, will not boot

    Hello, and thanks for looking.
    A bit of background:
My Macbook air recently started working stragely post upgrade to most recent snow leopard. Symptoms: spinning beach ball when cursor went up to menu, and could not click on apple symbol. Would still run 'normally' though.
Fixed permissions and did a disk check - was advised to repair disk - and this process failed 1/2 way through. The computer then would now not boot up in safe mode or otherwise. All I can do it boot up with superdrive into OS.
Due to small windows partition (I think) I cannot simply reinstall the OS, as it gives me the message "cannot change disk - save as many files as possible and erase and install".... where the final problem begins....
All I can then access is Utilities, with my options being erase and reinstall, or to try and make an image of my Mac HD - however - cannot eject the superdrive as it is running the OS to put the drive image on my external drive.
Seems my only option is to erase the drive at this stage?? Called Apple and this was a "new problem" to them, and repair centres didnt know what to do either.
The only glimmer of hope is that if I hold "option" down when starting I can still boot into windows, but cannot save the image there either. All I can do on that screen is establish a network/internet connection.
I gather that I cannot remove the Air HDD and put it in another mac as it does not have a standard interface, but then came across the "Netbooting" feature.
Would this somehow allow me to run through remote disk the OS on another Mac? and then have connected my external drive to save my HDD image to?
    Or am I stuffed?
ANY advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks so much.

I would suggest trying to save/repair that drive with DIskWarrior yet before having to stop here and pick up a paddle.

  • MacBook Air Airplay Fails

I am having trouble connecting my MacBook Air (late 2013 model) running 10.8.5 to my AppleTV (early 2013 running 6.0) via Airplay.  I am on the same network and have the airplay icon but when I try to connect it fails.  Is there a solution to this problem?  I have a iPad Mini that Airplay occasionally is succusful with but it sometimes takes multiple attempts to sync.

Same here ????? All other iOS devices work, but NOT my Macbook air..

  • Macbook Air hardrive fail problem

Hi, I would like to ask for some help. A few days ago  i took my (15 months old) Macbook Air to the Apple representative in Uruguay  (I'm here travelling) because the general password was not being recognized so i wanted it to be reset. They did that and the next day I picked it up from them and used it all day. In the evening it suddenly froze while i was using it. I turned it of and back on and it started displaying a sign of a file with a question mark on it. I took it back to the shop the next day and left it with them.  They were supposed to call me that day but never did.  the next day I called them and they told me that the computer was not recognizing the hardrive, that there was a hardrive failure, that reparing it would cost much more thsn the cost of the machine itself so i needed to buy a new one and that on top of that they could not recover any data. Everything is supposedly gone forever. I asked if there was nothing they could do to recover the data and they said " we do not have the technology to do that"...
More worrying they told me that the hardrive inside the machine was not the original. I opened the original box myself and the laptop has always been with me, never serviced or left for a prolonged amount of time outside my reach.
After that they told me that they were going to look at it again and they were going to call me when it was ready
I told them that i was travelling that evening. They never called back. When i tried calling them no one picked up, it was closed. It was a Saturday, the dont open Sundays so I had to change my ticket and stay untill They opened again.
Please guys help me because i don't know what to do. I'm not a very technical girl but this all sounds a bit strange to me.
Plus I lost very important data that i need for my work that i need to recover.
Can you please suggest what i can do?? I would greatly appreciare it!!!
    Thank you!!

Perhaps you should provide feedback to Apple about this.

  • Macbook Air internet fails 50% of the time.

I'm a first time mac owner and currently very dissatisfied. I've had my MBA for about 3 months now, its running 10.7.4 Lion and it was running fine for a long while. recently I have been having issues where I launch safari and the system hangs, the page either doesn't load or takes 20-30 minutes to load. It takes days for my email to sync/download. the system is nearly unsuable.
What I have done to try and make it work:
    - bought a wifi repeater to extend signal range/strength
    - boosted both router and repeater with 14-20Db antenne
    - run dead run wired connection through my house and use ethernet USB adapter
    - On the computer, turned wifi on and off, The issues is persistant with wired connection too.
    - Turn off bluetooth and remove bluetooth devices
    - ensure connection in network manager, I have connection via both wifi and eithernet, both DHCP's are verified and they work perfectly over the internal network.
I know the external network is not an issue, I have 3 Win7 machines, 4 android devices, an ipod touch, and 2 Ubuntu servers connected. Professonally I'm a network administrator , I know my house is wired correctly and recieving proper signal.
Additionally will this problem be solved if I upgrade to Mountain Lion? I upgraded the system very early on. That is about the time the problems started. The wifi issues were bad enough to make me revert back to 10.7.4.
I've been beating my head aginst a wall for 3 months. Really dissatisfied that I have a 1000 dollar system that only works 50% of the time.
    ~Casey

Connect via Ethernet and turn Wi-Fi off. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results.

  • Trying to install old Jam Packs on MacBook Air/Lion.

When I try to install my old Jam Pack, World Music, on MacBook Air, it fails at the last minute, giving infinite errors due to PListBuddy not being supported, necessitating a restart. Symphony and Orchestra worked fine. Anyone esle had the same problem or any luck fixing it? Thanks.

So Jam Pack is a bit peculiar. What you'll want to do is:
    1. Have the CD in the drive, and the file Install Jam Pack World Music in view.
    2. Right-click (control click) on the file, and select Show Package Contents.
    3. Open up the Contents folder.
    4. Open up the Installers folder.
    5. Find WorldMusic_Instruments_Tiger.pkg, and run the installation. You will get a few PListBuddy errors, but these can be closed, and the installation will finish.
    6. Find WorldMusic_Loops_Tiger.pkg, and do the same as step 5.
    You should be good!
    Other info:
Some errors I noticed: It said that the installer was "waiting for other installations to complete". Just open Terminal (Applications -> Utilities), and type: sudo killall installd
    Try installing again.

  • I have a problem syncing iCal on my Macbook air (10.7.5) and my iPhone 4s (5.1.1) over iCloud. The following server error message comes up "The request (CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation) for account "iCloud" failed." Been to Apple - no luck. Ideas?

I have a problem syncing iCal on my Macbook air (10.7.5) and my iPhone 4s (5.1.1) over iCloud. The following server error message comes up "The request (CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation) for account “iCloud” failed." Been to Apple Store - no luck instore, or with Super genius over the phone when with genius in store, taking data in real time via ethernet!
I had to do a full wipe of my system because of time machine back up issues 2 weeks ago, and the error has only occured at some point since then. I only did a drag and drop of my user account folders/files into an External HDD rather than a copy of my user account (advised by the staff in store at Apple to do this) and when reimported, the Mail folders are all present but each message is in a sub-sub-sub folder that is numerically named. I do not have a mirror image of the hard disk prior to the wipe, only a time machine back up from 2 weeks prior to it being done. I am uncertain if this reinstall has caused the issue.
I am not happy to upgrade the software in my iPhone until I have the calendars working. I have purchased Mountain Lion, but again am concerned about upgrading until the issues are sorted.
I have tried the other solutions on here with no luck. HELP please.
    Many Thanks.

    Progress Update.
I made a back of what existing phtos and Videos I had on my Iplhone.  I used Image capture to do this making an entire back up of photos and videoa that were still intact on the phone.
Image capture is god for this purpose, as it does exactly what you ask it to do without applying any rules or squishing the files back into iphote (which might also be corupted)
Image capture wil do the basic function of retriving the contents of the phone and save them as native files on your hard drive.
Once I did this I erased my iphone, and re intitialised it restoring an older back up from icloud.
As the retore was happneing - I did retreive the missing files that cuased the intial beviour as above, and I could play the videos that were missing in the above scenerio.  The wierd ting was however that even though the source files were now back on the device, the thumbnail previews were missing. Where I ahd balck thumb nails for server portions of the resotred content.
I then went to bed as the restore is a long process.  When I woke up the library had library had cleaned itself up.  Mysteriously the prcess had deleted the files missing the their thumbnails.
This is very perculiar and bad behavior.
I am now repeating the process, and will attempt to download the missing content as it is restored and prior to the phone trying to fix itself.
    Here are the lessons learned.
DO NOT rely on Photo Stream to keep back ups and synchornise videos from you IOS device. IT DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS CAPBILITY
DO NOT rely on iCloud Back Up alone - always fd an occassional iTunes back up or more reliably still always take a back up of photos and video files using Image Capture to be doubly sure that you a have backd up any content.
DO THIS NOW - dont wait to loose your phone ofr have your phone repaired by replacement at the apple Store.  (I did both :-(

    Hello b.krushel,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
Any number of things could cause this issue, so I would recommend this article named iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3999.
    These sections in particular:
    General Troubleshooting
Make sure there are no current issues listed on the System Status that affect iCloud Calendar. The System Status is located on the iCloud Support webpage.
Make sure you have fully enabled iCloud Calendar for the client you are using (for more setup and troubleshooting information on iOS, OS X, Windows and iCloud.com, see the additional details below).
Check to see if the issue you are seeing is covered in iCloud Help. To search iCloud Help, visit help.apple.com/icloud.
Check your settings and preferences as something may not be set up correctly. For example, having incorrect date and time settings can cause issues which are easily resolved by entering the appropriate settings.
Troubleshooting Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion (iCal on OS X Lion)Note: For instructions on setting up iCloud Calendar with Calendar or iCal on your Mac, see iCloud Setup. If you are having trouble with Calendar or iCal on a Mac and you are using iCloud Calendar, try each of these steps, testing after each to see if the issue is resolved:
Make sure you are using OS X Lion v10.7.2 or later. Click here for help verifying the version of OS X you are using.
Make sure your computer is online. Attempt to view www.apple.com and iCloud.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud calendars and events will not update in iCal. Click here for more information about troubleshooting your Internet connection.
Verify that your iCloud member name is entered into the iCloud Preference pane in System Preferences. See iCloud Setup for more information about setting up iCloud on a Mac.
Make sure you enter and update calendar information in the iCloud section of Calendar or iCal. Only calendars and events in the iCloud section of the Calendar or iCal Calendar list will be pushed to iCloud. Both Calendar and iCal for the Mac support the display of and interaction with multiple accounts and datastores, for example, iCloud, On My Mac, Exchange, Google, and so on. This makes it easy to create or modify events or calendars in a section of  Calendar or iCal that may not be updating iCloud. Learn more about moving local calendars to iCloud.
In some cases, you may find that you have data duplicated in both the local On My Mac and the iCloud sections of Calendar or iCal. Learn more about resolving this issue.
You can make the iCloud calendar your default calendar for all new events. In Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion, choose Calendar > Preferences > General, or in OS X Lion, choose iCal > Preferences > Generaland under the Default Calendar heading, select one of the Calendars under the iCloud heading. Close the Preferences window to save this change.
If recent changes simply don't appear, try forcing Calendar or iCal to refresh by selecting Refresh All from theCalendar menu.
Make sure your account was successfully created in Calendar on your Mac (or iCal). After upgrading to iCloud Calendar, you may need to quit and reopen Calendar (or iCal). To confirm your account is configured correctly in iCal:
    Open Calendar (or iCal).
    Open Calendar (or iCal) Preferences.
Click Accounts. You should see an account with your iCloud member name entered.
Turn iCloud Calendars off and back on
    Quit Calendar (or iCal).
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Remove the checkmark in the checkbox next to Calendars.
Close System Preferences and wait about a minute.
Open System Preferences and choose iCloud.
Replace the checkmark next to Calendars.
    Close System Preferences.
Open Calendar (or iCal) and test to see if the issue has been resolved.
Restart your computer. This may sound simple, but it does reinitialize your network and application settings and can frequently resolve issues.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • MacBook Air will not print on wireless Epson printer.  It says 'filter failed'

MacBook Air all of a sudden will not print on wireless Epson printer.  The error message is 'filter failed'.  Shut down everything and rebooted, but still not printing.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Select
              /var/log ▹ cups ▹ error_log
from the hierarchical list on the left side of the Console window. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last failed printing attempt. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Macbook air is stuck in a reboot loop after running Software Update.  It looks like a firmware update is failing.

I have a first generation Macbook Air running Lion, and just ran software update to get the latest version of iTunes.  It appears I may have gotten a firmware update mixed in the bunch, and now it keeps trying to run the update at boot, failing, and shutting down.
I can start the restore partition, and the system appears to function, but I cannot figure out how to abort this failing update so I can use my system, and determine which update is breaking it and why. I've tried resetting the firmware, but that didn't change anything.
There's nothing, not even a the CD drive plugged into the Air, so it's not a peripheral problem.
I could restore from backups, but that seems like a very brute force way to get rid of a firmware update loader.
Does anyone know how to disable these little beasts?

Restart the Air while holding down the shift key, this is safe mode. Once in to the login screen, login then hold the shift key again. It will disable login items, which can be the cause of startup problems. Remove all your login items from your user accout and try a restart (Note the login items if you need to re-add essential ones later). If it all works well, then keep an eye on third party startup items, they will cause you grief!

  • Adobe CS2 installation failed on macbook air

I am trying to install Adobe Photoshop CS2 on Macbook air, but when the installation goes the half way, system generates a message, "installation failed, please contact the manufacturer". Could you please help me to resolve the issue. thank you

Assuming it is not an OS compatibility issue (which it may well be), you would not be able to activate it anyway. The activation servers for CS2 and earlier are dead and gone.
See the page in the link below. Follow the directions carefully. And see if that works for you.

  • MacBook Air/nvidia GeForce9400M/driver issue  font installation fails on xp

xp sp3 on a MacBook Air (bought 04-2009, 2x 1,86 GHz, 128 GB SSD) fails to install otf type fonts with an error message. Also Adobe Photoshop 10 (CS3) will crash upon trying to insert writing into a jpeg, tif, psd etc.
Source of problem: The nvidia graphic driver needs some more memory allocation than xp expects.
Remedy: open the registry editor (START>RUN>regedit)
    navigate to the following key:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement
    add a new REG_DWORD Value
change the name of the value to
    SessionImageSize
    set its value (decimal) to
    20
    reboot
-- this problem would only seem to affect xp sp3 systems with nvidia graphics
-- be sure to backup your registry before changing it and
be sure to know what you are doing before editing the registry
Apparently this problem has been recognized by nvidia and implemented in their latest driver release. This is not suited, however, for Apple products, since they have further customized the nvidia driver (and apparently NOT included this fix!).
The fix will resolve the problems mentioned above with installing otf type fonts and inserting writing into pics in photoshop. Photoshop, however, continues to crash upon exiting, an issue not yet resolved.

    Hi and welocme to Discussions,
use the SafeBoot options of XP as described here http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B315222&x=10&y=11
Use Safe Mode (=Minimal) to startup XP with a minimal set of drivers and from there uninstall the not-working Nvidia drivers.
The reinstall the drivers that worked.
You might wanna tryout if 'Last Known Good Configuration' works.

  • Installer failed to initialize. Installing PS Elements 10 to a MacBook Air

I am trying to install Photoshop Elements to my MacBook Air and I get the following error:
Installer failed to initialize. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem.
I did and it can not seem to find any issues.
    Help.

I called into support last night because I am an impatient type and expect better response time. I was told the disk I had was damaged and I would have to download the file. I expected to at least to get a replacement disk as I just bought the program. I was told I have to pay to get the disk.
This whole thing is so frustrating.
I did at least get the program up and running.
