Macbook air migration from mbook pro

hi i currently have 76gb on my hard drive on my macbook pro. when the mb air arrives with 80gb will their be enough room on the Air to do a migration or will i have to delete things off the macbook pro first to do the full migration?
Thanks
Rob

i have NOTHING nice to say about migrating from a macbook pro to this thing you call a computer. my client put it best when he called it a "glamorized cellphone." its a lemon people. hang onto your macbook pros, this thing is like totally ********. all i can say is with migrating or "upgrading" from your "old" macbook pro, GOOD LUCK!
the first thing apple said to me yesterday when i was trying to get support for migrating was "*oh, you can use firewire to firewire*" "what, the macbook air doesn't have firewire?" *no kidding*. it took them forever to tell me how to get the ethernet to usb adapter working +(I needed to plug both computers into a router--not so wireless sounding!? nope, and there is no direct computer-to-computer way, apparently, although he did mention usb to usb, the one thing I didn't try)+. wireless transfer was going to take 8 hours for 4 gigs of info , I finally saw that I could migrate using a time machine backup, but even that was ridiculous. His initial user folder was 60 gigs, which wouldn't fit. I would have had to backup his old computer by stripping it down first, which would just be ridiculous. I mean, this is his setup, why is Apple releasing something that is having us have to strip our machines down to the barest of bones. Its 2008, not 2000!
i spent 7 hours trying to migrate my client from his "old" computer. his mail alone filled up half the memory available, and we couldn't fit his photos, his MUSIC, any of that. so he has to lug a hard drive around with him wherever he goes, luckily his firewire glyph porta drives have a usb 2 connection, but we had to order him a powered usb port! he was SO BUMMED he spent as much money as he did to get the one with the super fast (64 gig) harddrive.
at the end of it all we gave up. i think he is going to send his back to apple and keep his macbook. i've set up his computers for 10 years, he always gets the latest. this migration was for all intents and purposes, miserable! she looks great though, and she is a fast machine.

If you used migration assistant then it probably created a new Login user and placed the migrated files under it.

  • How can I back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro Hard Drive using Time Machine?

Want to back up a MacBook Air on a Mac Pro with a spare hard drive. Sharing allows Time Machine to find the hard drive, but get a drive busy message when time machine tries to back up onto the drive.
    Any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Can I exchange my macbook air for the new pro?

I recently bought a haswell series 13" macbook air exactly 1 week before the introduction of the new haswell macbook pros.  After considering the spec and price difference I realized I'd rather have the pro. I looked on the returns tab on the website.  It said I can return my product within 14 days. Is it possible for me to exchange my air for the pro without having to go through returning my macbook air and buying the pro?  I realized the price difference wasn't all that differernt and I wouldn't mind the extra power. I currently have the 13" macbook air i5 with 8gb. I plan on getting the 8gb for the 13" retina display macbook pro as well

I strongly doubt it. The best thing for you to do is to return this one before the 14 days expire. If the time passes you will have to keep the Air and try to sell it privately.
Once Apple accepts the Air back and you know you are getting a refund you can start the order process for the Pro.

About the only thing that "might" be able to do is upgrade the SSD. OWC sells SSD upgrades for that unit. You would have to contact Apple though to verify that no warranty issues would apply when making the upgrade.

I don't know what service options are available in India but if this helps I do know that once you purchase your Apple product the warranty is valid anywhere in the world.

  • Can the macbook air do everything my pro does?

can the macbook air do everything my pro does?

Yes but slower, depending on how old your pro is. The cpu in the air models are slower then what is in the pro models. Slower cpu mean that everything works slower.

  • How can I move AVCHD files from my MacBook Air to my Mac Pro?

While on the road, I will be putting my AVCHD video on my MacBook Air. This will free up space on the SD card and enable me to export clips to iWeb, etc. But when I get back to my desk, I'll want to put all of that AVCHD content onto my Mac Pro for more thorough editing and long term storage. What is the best way to move the unedited AVCHD files (events) from one computer to the other?

    Jim,
There's a few ways you can do this but here's a method thats simple which also provides you with a backup of the movies contained on your SD card.
Try creating a disk image from your SDHC card from your Cam. You'll need an SD card reader and when you connect to your MBA you can create a .dmg file from disk utility.
Once you've done that you can launch imovie and then double click on your .dmg and imovie will prompt you if you want to add the movies to your library.
When you get back home you can follow the same procedure by copying over your .dmg. No need to export from imovie on your MBA to your MP. The added benefit is that you have a complete backup of your SDHC card in the .dmg which you can backup to DVD.
    Hope this helps.

  • Migrating from mac pro to mac mini firewire 400 - 800 cant find computer

    hi there
am trying to use migration assistant to move from old mac pro to new mac mini using firewire 400 - 800 cable but one computer cant see the other - any ideas anyone? have lots of large files so don't want to use wifi
    cheers
    Maria

    Did t d this?
Make sure both computers are connected via FireWire or ThunderBolt before starting. If you connect the cables after Migration Assistant is already running, the source computer may not be properly detected.
Restart the source (original) Mac while pressing and holding the "T" key.
    You can use ethernet too:
Make sure that the source Mac and target Macs are connected to the same network, either wirelessly or via Ethernet. (You can directly connect the two Macs via an Ethernet cable if both are Ethernet capable. To make MacBook Air Ethernet capable, connect using the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter.)

  • I cannot boot my 2012 Macbook Air 13" from external USB 2.0/3.0 drive.

I just purchased a new 2012 MacBook Air 13" with 8GB ram and 256Gb SSD. I have clones of my 2011 MBA drive made with Superduper on both a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 external drives. The USB 2.0 drive enclosure contains the OWC Aura 256GB 6G SSD that used to be the internal drive for my 2011 MBA.
I cannot boot my new 2012 MBA from either external drive. When I try to do so, the MBA displays shows a gray circle with a line through it.
I can boot my MacBook Pro 2010 and 2007 Mac Pro just fine with either USB external drive. So, it must be something up with compatibility with the new 2012 MBA. All of my Macs are running 10.7.4 with all of the latest upgrades available as of 6/24/12.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Bud James

I have a drive I had been using in a 2007 MacBook that I would like to "upgrade" to a compatible version of 10.7.4 (build 11E2705), but I am having trouble finding a way to get the version of the OS on the drive without affecting the data on the drive.
I had hoped that booting from the Recovery partion on the SSD would allow me to "Reinstall 10.7" to get a compatible version, but the drive still can not boot the 2012 MacBook Air.
I may try cloning next, moving directories I want to keep to the root level of the target drive, but I wish there was an easier way to "refresh" the install of the OS to a newer version for new hardware.
I also need to find a way to "refresh" the USB drive I have for installing 10.7, to make sure it has the ability to boot new hardware, since the original 10.7.4 USB install clone does not boot the newest laptops.

  • MacBook Air migration stuck at 48 hours and 20 minutes

I started a migration with my new MacBook Air at startup. I wirelessly connected the Air to my MacBook (black) and all seemed successful. But the data transfer has been at "48 hours and 20 minutes remaining" for the past day. I don't see how to cancel the migration from the MacBook Air. And even though I shutdown the MacBook (black), the MacBook Air still seems to be running the migration.
How do I cancel or even shutdown the MacBook Air?
Has anyone experienced this? What was your solution to successfully migrate data?
    Thank you.

If both Macs are connected with a cable (Thunderbolt or FireWire), disconnect and connect it again, so the restore should continue.
If not, I'm afraid that the only solution is to restart the MacBook Air and start Migration Assistant again

  • How do I stop my macbook Air overheating from Yosemite 10.10.1 download?

As soon as I downloaded the latest Yosemite OX 10.10.1 download my macbook air started to over heat. How can I stop this from happening as it is a loud noise and obviously not good for my computer?
    Additional info if necessary:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name: MacBook Air
      Model Identifier: MacBookAir5,2
      Processor Name: Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed: 2 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 4 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Boot ROM Version: MBA51.00EF.B02
      SMC Version (system): 2.5f9
      Serial Number (system): C02K40ZHF57J
      Hardware UUID: 33D04039-5418-561A-9944-79E459B2DDA9

Since overheating is something the computer tries to prevent, it will shut down if the temps get too hot, thus your experience is not overheating.
You can have a look at Activity Monitor (Menu Bar > View > Show All Processes) and then sort by CPU to see what the culprit is during downloading.
A hot Mac is not that big of a problem, the fan takes care of the heat and if you do not mind the noise, then that is it.
