Macbook Air Or Macbook Pro for Travel

Hi all,
In recent times I have been travelling quite a bit, and will be doing so again. My problem, travelling with my DSLR, iPod and Macbook Pro 15" has become a bit too much-mainly the weight of the macbook Pro.
I am thinking of getting the the Macbook Air which I believe is a lot lighter than the Pro I have, but am worried it might not do what I want. When travelling it is used for connecting to the WWW, emails, photos and thats more or less it really.
Would the MB Air be OK??- Happy to hear your thoughts
Michael
PS Could I install Aperture on thr Air??

The current version of the MacBook air matches up quite well to its bulkier brother. I replaced my 13" MBP (2010 model) with an 11" MBA and I could not be happier with it. What I do on it?  Word processing, some video editing, internet browsing, email, photos. Just about anything I would do with a bigger, heavier laptop. Needless to say, it is way more portable than the MBP was.
If using Aperture is not actually of great concern to you, you might also want to just go with an iPad for what you said you wanted to do with the Mac.
This might help you with Aperture. It's based on a previous model but I think it is quite enlightening. I do believe the current MBA outperforms the previous one by a fairly good margin so I wouldn't worry too much:  http://theapertureblog.com/2011/09/17/observations-on-running-aperture-on-a-macb ook-air/

Would an 11" MacBook Air be more ideal for travelling purposes I.e backpacking?

The most ideal yes, however you MUST use a cushion device to prevent your LCD from recieving pressure AND you must buy a waterproof bag etc to prevent it from getting wet in rain and bad humidity if backpacking outdoors.
Why your MacBook Air needs a warm coat too
While you should never store your notebook in a cold car for any significant time (couple hours or more), in cases where a notebook is being carried thru cold weather in a case, having a padded and zippered (not just a sleeve!) case is very important not just to protect your Macbook from a shock from being bumped or accidentally dropped, but for thermal protection. In coming in from a cold walk or environment, an unprotected and cold notebook is subject to condensation forming not only on the alloy casing but more importantly on internal parts and the logic board which is to be avoided at all costs. Namely when turned on and the fan kicks on and blows warm air around the cold logic board condensation can form and in worst cases either eventually produce a fault or lead to compounded problems where corrosion forms inside your Macbook.
For transporting in the cold, your notebook needs more than a sleeve, rather a padded / insulated carry case to prevent temperature fluctuation from causing condensation.
Extreme climate conditions that call for more than a simple notebook carry bag
For exotic travel, college campuses where distances between buildings in very rainy climates must be made, or in which one may have to travel any distances thru harsh snow, ice, or heavy rains, most all conventional carry bags designed for laptops are very inadequate. Such zippered or snapped bags both do not keep out very high humidity and do not protect much from a deep soaking in what is most often a cloth notebook bag.
Skyward facing zippers on most notebook bags are poor protection from water. Consider one of several options, that being a waterproof hard-plastic case designed for notebooks, or a waterproof rugged bag or case specifically designed to keep out harsh humidity and water. In the case of very thin watertight weather bags, these can often be used inside your existing notebook carry bag.
Watertight pouches, sealing weather bags, and plastic hard-cases to keep out extreme elements, rain, and humidity from reaching your notebook

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • Which is better for physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

Which is better for a physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

    Macbook Air
I cannot see you using strenuous applications to help you with a Physical Therapy Degree.
Have a think of whether you want an 11" or 13".
I'd recommend the 13" because although the 11" is perfect for taking notes in class etc.; when it comes to performing as a desktop and not sitting on your lap, it can seem too small.
The 13" is the best of both worlds. You can keep the portability and the power in one.
Make sure you get a large enough SSD, they always fill up fast with documents and possibly downloaded text books etc.
With the 13" if you decide to create a innovative project or a collection of photos, you can also use more RAM-consuming applications like iPhoto and iMovie, or even Aperture without worrying about freezing.

  • I have started migration système to transfert from hold Macbook pro to New MacBook air application starter successfully for several hours. But since more than 3 hours I got the message transferring Time zone paramètres with time left less than 1 minute.

    Hi
I have started migration système to transfert from hold Macbook pro to New MacBook air
Application starter successfully for several hours.
But since more than 3 hours I got the message "transferring Time zone paramètres " with time left less than 1 minute.
Any recommendation or suggestion to solve it ?
    Many tanks

If it has run for 3 hours it's probably done and you can quit Migration Assistant and reboot the new computer. In the future rather than using Migration Assistant I would recommend using Startup Assistant which tends to be a bit more reliable and does not create a new user account as MA does. • MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0

A new update was released today for june 2012 macbook pro'ss/air's. Is anyone else hoping for gaming improvements/improved nvidia drivers? I just updated but havent had a chance to test anything yet. I would also be interested in seeing if battery life improved at all.

  • MacBook air versus MacBook Pro

Which is better for video editing: MacBook air or MacBook pro? Which is more durable? What is the difference?

both will do the job for your.
the macbook air having a better resolution than the 13 Inch Macbook Pro.
the macbook air is lighter but not by much if comparing to a 13 Inch Macbook Pro.
the macbook pro however, comes with an optical drive and the macbook air does not.
the macbook pro's memory is upgradeable and the macbook air's memory is fixed.
the best solution for you, go to the apple store or best buy and compare them side by side.
i own 2 macbook pros - a 13 inch and 15 inch - upgraded the RAM to 16GB in both of them and took the hard drive off and installed SSDs in them.  Now I have a very fast Macbook Pro.

  • Macbook Air or Macbook Pro? What do you think?

I am currently in my last year of high school and will be off to university next year. I am thinking of getting a Mac but i'm not sure which one. I am just wondering if what do you guys think? Macbook Air or the Pro one? I will be mostly using it for school work and for university work on September. As well as for personal use. Thanks

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air forums. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Envy 4500 has stopped printing off both a Macbook Air and a Pro - was fine before

I've been very happy with my printer/scanner but today it has stopped printing off both my Macbook Air and Macbook Pro.  The printer seems fine so not sure why this has happened.  Please help!

    Hi @Swaggie,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that your HP Envy 4500 is not printing from your Macbook Air and your Macbook Pro. I am happy to help you with this printing issue!
For further assistance, I will need to know the following information:
The version number of the Mac Operating Systems. To find the exact version, visit this link. Whatsmyos.
If the printer is connected, Wireless, or USB.
If the printer is able to make copies. Copy Text or Mixed Documents.
If the power cable is plugged into a surge protector, or directly to the wall outlet. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
If there are any error messages on the printer's display panel.
In the meantime, please take a look through this guide, 'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Does Not Print: Mac OS X, and let me know what happens!

  • After update to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0 screen start flicking

I've just updated my macbook pro 15" retina with Macbook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0 from App store (just this update).
After that, every time it goes on the screen saver or if I close it, I can't get it back on, the screen starts flicking black.
There is no away I can enter the password, even the keyboard is flicking.
I have to force the macbook pro power off and on in order to use it.
    The update is this http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1609
    How can I solve this?

Unfortuantely, right now there appears to be no solution except for restoring from a backup before Update 2.0.
Update 2.0 is a mess - you are lucky if that is the only thing it affects.  See: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20272989#20272989

  • New MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros supporting Snow Leopard?

Do the new MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros support the Snow Leopard OS? I have been trying to install 10.6 but the screen is blacking out after install for the Air and I cannot even boot into an external drive for the Pro. Any suggestions or help?

    Kada,
A Mac's Firmware is designed to reject the installation of a Mac operating system that predates the version and build the unit originally shipped with. There is a good reason for it, as earlier versions would unlikely be in anyway compatible with the hardware. An OS that predates the hardware would not have the requisite drivers for the built-in peripherals, such as the graphics subsystem and ports. The safetey measure prevents Apple from having to deal with the potential nightmare of users having problems they are not prepared to alleviate.
You may be able to physically create a working situation by running an earlier build using a VM layer, such as using Parallels or Fusion, but Snow Leopard's single user licensing doesn't lawfully permit it. Snow Leopard's Server edition does however. Then again, it still wouldn't solve your scenario, as you would be running Lion or Mountain Lion to support the VM.

  • I would like to know how do I install the brazilian keyboard into macbook air, keyboard with accents (Portuguese Language), I tried so many times how to put into it (Macbook Air). So, thanks for now! I'm waiting for it.

I would like to know how do I install the brazilian keyboard into macbook air, keyboard with accents (Portuguese Language), I tried so many times how to put into it (Macbook Air). So, thanks for now! I'm waiting for it.

After you go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources as suggested by sberman, click on the + button and scroll down to Portuguese and select that.  Over at the right you will see the choices Brazilian, Brazilian abnt, Portuguese.  You might want to add all three to see which you like best.
The "Brazilian" layout is pretty useless.  It is identical to the US layout and the only way to make accents is via the option key shortcuts:  option + n, then o gives you õ.
The Brazilian abnt and Portuguese layouts have dead keys for adding accents over at the right edge of the keyboard.  But these may not match what is printed on your keys.
You may prefer to stay with the US layout.  On that you can get accented letters by just holding down the base letter and selecting what you want from the popup menu that appears.  Or you can use the option key shortcuts.
Another option is the layout called US International PC, which has accent deadkeys on ~, ', etc.
Which ever layout you want to use, you must select it in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.
To see which key does what for any layout, use the Keyboard Viewer:
