Macbook Air or Macbook Pro? What do you think?

I am currently in my last year of high school and will be off to university next year. I am thinking of getting a Mac but i'm not sure which one. I am just wondering if what do you guys think? Macbook Air or the Pro one? I will be mostly using it for school work and for university work on September. As well as for personal use. Thanks

Hi! i have a macbook pro 3.1 with core 2 duo, 3gb ram and a 10.6.8 version. I want a 10.7 version but i dont want any speed problems, what do you think?

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:

Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely

    If not why option available
    Thanks!

What Carolyn says is correct. You can, however, share an Internet connection with your iPhone wirelessly by turning in Internet sharing (found in System Preferences > Sharing.) If your MacBook Pro is already using a wireless connection, you can just connect to the same wireless network it is using.
    Best of luck.

  • Macbook Air is locked. What command should I use to reboot? Why is this happening? Pics included

I recently got a MacBook Air from someone who owed me money. The MacBook Air is completely locked and Im not sure how to bypass the secured login screen or which code to use that will boot in an alternative mode. I've tried Command + R, Command + S, Option and none of these three worked. When I press Command + R, I get the following lock screen (the picture is just upside down, not sure why.)
I own a macbook pro and have reset my password using Command+R. Not sure if MacBook Airs need a different command. When I press Command+S I get a loading screen, then a screen that tells me "Your computer is disabled. Try Again in 60 minutes"
    Why is this happening?
What command can I press to bypass this?
Could I put a clean OS on a USB drive and install it that way to have a clean install? If so, how do I boot it, if I can only get to these screens?
Now that my computer is disabled and I have to wait 60 minutes, should I perform the correct command once the time is expired or can I use it immediately, while the disabled time is still active?
    Please help!!!!
Also, not sure which OS its running since I can't get pass this to fully inspect the Macbook Air.

That is an EFI Firmware Password.
There are only two ways around it: bring it and some money to Apple, who will certainly want proof of ownership, or obtain the password from its previous owner.
A third method that I do not recommend is to pay any number of sketchy third party outfits that allege a means of removing the password. There are several reasons I do not recommend it, among them: I have no personal experience with them, I have no idea if they will be successful, and you may have no recourse if they damage the Mac and render it permanently broken. Apple will certainly refuse service if anyone other than Apple or an authorized Apple repair facility tampers with it.

  • MacBook air versus MacBook Pro

Which is better for video editing: MacBook air or MacBook pro? Which is more durable? What is the difference?

both will do the job for your.
the macbook air having a better resolution than the 13 Inch Macbook Pro.
the macbook air is lighter but not by much if comparing to a 13 Inch Macbook Pro.
the macbook pro however, comes with an optical drive and the macbook air does not.
the macbook pro's memory is upgradeable and the macbook air's memory is fixed.
the best solution for you, go to the apple store or best buy and compare them side by side.
i own 2 macbook pros - a 13 inch and 15 inch - upgraded the RAM to 16GB in both of them and took the hard drive off and installed SSDs in them.  Now I have a very fast Macbook Pro.

  • Envy 4500 has stopped printing off both a Macbook Air and a Pro - was fine before

I've been very happy with my printer/scanner but today it has stopped printing off both my Macbook Air and Macbook Pro.  The printer seems fine so not sure why this has happened.  Please help!

    Hi @Swaggie,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that your HP Envy 4500 is not printing from your Macbook Air and your Macbook Pro. I am happy to help you with this printing issue!
For further assistance, I will need to know the following information:
The version number of the Mac Operating Systems. To find the exact version, visit this link. Whatsmyos.
If the printer is connected, Wireless, or USB.
If the printer is able to make copies. Copy Text or Mixed Documents.
If the power cable is plugged into a surge protector, or directly to the wall outlet. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
If there are any error messages on the printer's display panel.
In the meantime, please take a look through this guide, 'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Does Not Print: Mac OS X, and let me know what happens!
Hope to hear from you soon!

  • How much does it cost to replace a Macbook Air keyboard? And what components does the replacement include?

How much does it cost to replace a Macbook Air keyboard? And what components does the replacement include?

I had two fans replaced in 2012 on my 2006 MacBook Pro were around £10 each with labor at £20. I don't know that these prices are still viable, but it may give you an estimate.
    Good luck,

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • Which is better for physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

Which is better for a physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

    Macbook Air
I cannot see you using strenuous applications to help you with a Physical Therapy Degree.
Have a think of whether you want an 11" or 13".
I'd recommend the 13" because although the 11" is perfect for taking notes in class etc.; when it comes to performing as a desktop and not sitting on your lap, it can seem too small.
The 13" is the best of both worlds. You can keep the portability and the power in one.
Make sure you get a large enough SSD, they always fill up fast with documents and possibly downloaded text books etc.
With the 13" if you decide to create a innovative project or a collection of photos, you can also use more RAM-consuming applications like iPhoto and iMovie, or even Aperture without worrying about freezing.

  • Hi I would like to show a presentation written on my macbook air on my television what is the best way to connect the two ?

Hi I would like to show a presentation written on my macbook air on my television what is the best way to connect the two ?

Much depends on the available connectivity  of your television.
If it has HDMI input available, all you will need is a minidisplayport to HDMI adapter, and an HDMI cable long enough to place the Mac in the desired proximity to the TV. The adapter is avaialble from the Apple Store online.
Provided the HDMI input on the television supports sound, and the model of your MBA supports it as well, make suree that your adapter is also supportive of sound, otherwise you will need to run separate cabling from the headphone jack of the MBA to TV sound input or external speakers.
This is a somewhat specific answer to a question without any requisite detail. You don't indicate the model or type of inputs on your TV, nor do you indicate the model/generation of MBA you have.

  • After update to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0 screen start flicking

I've just updated my macbook pro 15" retina with Macbook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0 from App store (just this update).
After that, every time it goes on the screen saver or if I close it, I can't get it back on, the screen starts flicking black.
There is no away I can enter the password, even the keyboard is flicking.
I have to force the macbook pro power off and on in order to use it.
    The update is this http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1609
    How can I solve this?

Unfortuantely, right now there appears to be no solution except for restoring from a backup before Update 2.0.
Update 2.0 is a mess - you are lucky if that is the only thing it affects.  See: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20272989#20272989

  • New MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros supporting Snow Leopard?

Do the new MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros support the Snow Leopard OS? I have been trying to install 10.6 but the screen is blacking out after install for the Air and I cannot even boot into an external drive for the Pro. Any suggestions or help?

    Kada,
A Mac's Firmware is designed to reject the installation of a Mac operating system that predates the version and build the unit originally shipped with. There is a good reason for it, as earlier versions would unlikely be in anyway compatible with the hardware. An OS that predates the hardware would not have the requisite drivers for the built-in peripherals, such as the graphics subsystem and ports. The safetey measure prevents Apple from having to deal with the potential nightmare of users having problems they are not prepared to alleviate.
You may be able to physically create a working situation by running an earlier build using a VM layer, such as using Parallels or Fusion, but Snow Leopard's single user licensing doesn't lawfully permit it. Snow Leopard's Server edition does however. Then again, it still wouldn't solve your scenario, as you would be running Lion or Mountain Lion to support the VM.
