Macbook Air or MBP Which performs better

I'm considering the 13" MBP 2.9Ghz with 8GB 700GB HD vs the 13 in Air 2.0GHz (256GB).  Besides the boot time being faster on the Air vs. the MBP is there other benchmarks available to compare these two models?  I saw 15 retina and air benchmarks but nothing comparing what performs better the air or 13 mbp.  Thanks.

Most testing benchmarks don't adequately indicate the "real world" experience in regard to these two disparate setups. When the MBP is tasked to intensely execute a series of processor intensive tasks, such as video encoding or image manipulation, the MBP will "finish the race" much faster. The MBP has quad core, discrete graphics, and will be faster. It takes a measure of subjective "experience" testing to discern their real world differences, which will vary amongst users.
The SSD in the Air will make the unit "seem" much more peppy than a HDD equipped MBP. When loading multiple files into memory, the SSD really shines. It makes apps launch faster, the boot faster, and the saving of files faster. Since most users are not repetitively performing tasks that require the raw processing power of the Pro model, many will just find the Air plain faster for them.
Im sure arstechnica.com and anandtech.com will be doing straight-up comparisons really soon, as they have done on previous iterations of the Air and Pro. They both are very adept at discerning the usable differences beween both these lines.
Of course, if you equip your Pro with an SSD, it will beat the Air in every way, except portability.

Connecting MAC Air to Projector - which is better, hdmi, vga or usb?

HDMI is thje preferred digital replacemnt for older analog video standards, which your other choices use. It offers far higher signal and definition quality.
Apple has an adapter that is used with your Thunderbolt port/ Mini DisplayPort, if yours is equipped as such.
I've not had a problem with this. It is a Belkin.

  • AIR Vs MBP - which is cooler

Looking to get a mac for web browsing, occasional movie watching, word processing, video chatting, and occasional photo and document scanning.
Deciding between the latest AIR 1.86GHz with SSD or a MBP 2.3GHz i5 with SSD.
My deciding factor is heat - which laptop do you think will run cooler for these tasks? And will there be a considerable difference?

No heat issues really, I max out the cores (all 8) on my MacBook Pro and it's less hot than my old Intel Core 2 Duo.
The MBP 2.3 you can 3D game on, not on the MacBook Air.
The MPB 2.3 will last longer because it's got a better processor and graphics card.
The weight really isn't a issue unless your petite.
The MBP cd/dvd drive is a added benefit, it's a separate purchase on the MacBook Air.
The MBP comes with a optional anti-glare screen, a must if your portable, or want to view the computer from the pool, porch etc.
The Air has a glossy screen, reflects everything.
MBP is upgradable, faster/larger drive, switch out the Superdrive, add RAM. This is what makes it last longer, the powerful processors plus the ability to upgrade parts.
Still got my 7 year old Core 2 duo, it's in reserve now, but I could sell it, people want it too. It's got 3 more years of life on it easy, perhaps longer.
Runs windows and OS X at the same time.
MacBook Air? eh, perhaps 4 years if you don't do much with computers.
Oh, the Air, the CPU also does the graphics. The MBP, the graphics is a separate deal, less heat in one spot usually equals more performance as the CPU doesn't have to hobble itself to stay with the cooling system needs.
Why you can 3D game well on the MBP

  • Which performs better for windows development, bootcamp or parallels?

I have an imac at home and am using parallels to host a w7 vm, wherein I do some web and db development.  It is quite sluggish at times.  I think i may need to tweak the config to perhaps allocate more ram to it but i'm not sure.  I just picked up a macbook pro gen2 i7 and before I install a w7 vm or parttition i was wondering which is better, parallels or bootcamp?  I do like the interactivity that parallels gives me with respect to files between the w7 vm and lion, but am wondering it that is perhaps the achilles heal when it comes to performance.
what's the preferred route by other developers out there?
    Thanks!

that's what i thought.  thanks for confirming.  it sounds like i might be able to use parallels ALSO later on to access the windows bootcamp partition, based on reading another thread.

  • Updated MacBook Air or MBP with Retina Display?

    Hello guys.
I am planning to buy a Macbook, but I don't know which model.
Actually, I am thinking of buying the updated MacBook Air 13 inches, 256 GB Flash Storage etc, because it is really really slim and it has just updated , so it would be a purchase that would last as "the new model" for a longer time.
On the other hand, the model I really like is the MBP with Retina Display, but my problem is that I assume it will be updated soon. I was hoping that it would be updated during the Apple's last keynote(as it happened with the Air model) but this didn't happen.
I want to hear your thoughts. Is the MBP with Retina Display so much more powerful than the new MacBook Air that would worth the time waiting for an updated model to come?
I am really looking forward to buying a MacBook for myself , but should I wait for the updated model of MBP with Retina Display or go straight ahead and buy the updated MacBook Air model?
Thanks in advanced for your answers!

No one has any thoughts? :-(

  • Which performs better, the Retina or the regular pro?

I am debating which Pro to purchase, if I were to choose between the Air or a Pro. So far, I am going with the air, but I would first like to know the differences between the Retina and the regular Pro. I am going to use the laptop for school work, music, movies, and gaming ( Minecraft, GTA). I would like to know which Pro will do those tasks the fastest, without crashing or lagging, and the clearest. I am planning to buy a 13' with 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM, and a Dual-Core Intel i7 Processor.

Unless you plan on doing much video and photo editing or gaming the Air is the hands down choice for school use.
The newly released macbook Retina (entry level ones), in easy examination is a thicker macbook Air, thats a bit faster with a retina display.
I have 2 Pros (older) and the current Air. The Air is very nice for its very lightweight packing around,......
,...however now the new Retina pro and the Air are very close together,........both 802ac wifi
    both have PCIe SSD
    both have Mavericks and Haswell
as said, bit more speed and Retina display.
The 13" Air in I5 however has the longest battery life by far, with reports in the 13 and 14 hour range.

  • AMD vs Core I7 - which performs better for Adobe Products?

    I'm currently running an AMD System (Phenom 2 x4 3.2Ghz, 8GB DDR3 PC10666, ATI 3870 512MB, Windows Ultimate 64bit, WD 120GB 10k RPM)
and I'm wondering if it's worth purchasing and building a new, intel Core i7-920 system. I know the higher end, 970 would be better, but I don't feel like dropping $1k on a processor - so 920 is what I'm looking at.
I would like to know (from users who have used, or are familiar with both platforms) which system performs better with the Adobe production suite and if it's worth the investment to switch from AMD to Intel. Does Hyper Threading affect the way AE / Premiere render? Will I notice a difference in speed from 8GB to 12/24GB for memory (for AE / Pr)?
I would also like any suggestions on graphics cards (FireGL vs Quadro or GTX vs Radeon) to boost performance. I'm not much of a gamer and I would like to concentrate more of power on production. Right now I'm using a gaming card (an older one at that) and I would like to know if buying a newer one will boost performance for AE / Pr.
Any help, tips, or suggestions would be great!
    Thanks,
    Drew

I would recommend Intel processors over AMD for Adobe products.
Does Hyper Threading affect the way AE / Premiere render?
I can't talk for Premiere. For AE, it's perhaps marginal compared to the number of physical cores. And could be in some cases counter-productive if it tricks AE's multiprocessing system into believing there are twice as many cores, because of the way AE assigns RAM to the rendering instances it launches for each core (when "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" is enabled in Preferences).
Will I notice a difference in speed from 8GB to 12/24GB for memory (for AE / Pr)?
Yes, 8 GB is actually the absolute minimum you want for a quad core system (2 GB per core).
After that, it depends on the content. For HD sized Comps, large source files and/or 32 bpc processing, having more RAM would lead to better performance and reliability.
I would also like any suggestions on graphics cards (FireGL vs Quadro
or GTX vs Radeon) to boost performance. I'm not much of a gamer and I
would like to concentrate more of power on production.
In AE, OpenGL previews are meant to provide a smoother/more responsive experience when interacting with the application. It won't help with render times in most cases. A medium to high end consumer level card should be fine. No need to sell the house for one of the pro level models. Keep an eye to the list of officially supported card/driver combinations.

  • Problems with Yahoo Mail and Calendar on MacBook air.  Very slow performance.  Any ideas?

I have a macbook air running Apple's latest OS. My system is up-to-date.  Over the last few weeks, I have had a very difficult time accessing my yahoo mail and calendar.  I can access other sites, thus I know my connection is solid.  The problem seems to be limited to Yahoo.  I can access my yahoo account on my husband's PC without any issues.  To be specific, here are the symptoms of my problem.  When I try to open my yahoo mail on the Mac, I get the spinning wheel for several minutes.  I view my yahoo calendar through ical.  Yahoo is not connecting with ical, thus my calendar is empty.  I verified my settings and they are correct.  Also, sometimes after trying and retrying the calendar will connect.  I checked the web and did not find any info about this problem.  I appreciate your assistance.

I have been having the same issue. I can't figure it out. I have tried setting this up my yahoo calendar on my phone and my computer and my iPhone with no luck. It's definitely a Yahoo Problem. At this point I have become enemy to Yahoo Calendar.

    Hello.
    try this
1- You have to restart your MBA holding down the Command+S keys, and this will take you into Single User Mode and it’s Terminal interface.
2- Then you have to check the filesystem. to do this you have to type the following command in the terminal interface:
    fsck -fy
3- Then you have to mount the root drive with write option enabled so you can apply and save any changes. Type this in the temrinal interface:
    mount -uw /
4- And then type this command exactly as you see it here:
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
5- Reboot your MBA by typing this in the terminal interface:
    reboot
6- After you reboot, you will be see the “Welcome Wizard” startup screen. Follow the wizard and create a new user account. This new account name must be different from the onewhose password you want to recover.
7- Continue and boot into your Mac OS X with the new account you have just created, this new user account is an Administrator and has administrative access
8- Now that you're logged in, go to System Preferences
9- Click on Users & Groups
10- Click on the Lock icon and use your newly created user name and password if asked. This will allow you to make changes to other user accounts
11- On the user panel select the user account whose password you have forgotten and then click on the Change Password... button.
    12- Enter your new password
13- Reboot/restart your MBA and now you can log back in with your old account. If you want you can delete the user account you created following this steps.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck

  • My laptop (macbook air) asked me which library I wanted to open iphoto with but there were no options of libraries to open it with - I had to create a new library and all of my photos were gone.

My laptop said I was running out of space on my start up disk and then I opened iphoto and it asked which library I wanted to open it with. There were no options available so I had to create a new library for my iphoto. None of my photos were on iphoto when I opened it again. The same thing happened with my photobooth - all of my photos have disappeared.
I tried to do alt + command when opening iphoto but it didn't help, however I found some of my photos in the masters folder I found when I right clicked on the iphoto file.
Please help I have all of my photos from the last 3 years on my iphoto!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
have you found where is your original library is located? Is there both an Old Masters and Masters folder in it?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
how much free space on your boot drive? It's strongly recommended to maintain a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space for optimal system and application performance.

  • LINUX or AIX?? Which performs better for Essbase

  • Should I sell my MacBook Air to get a MacBook Pro?

Currently I have a MacBook Air Mid 2011 with the following specs:
Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Hard Drive: 250GB
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
I originally put up an add to sell it for 950$ since it's from 2011. I wasn't sure if this was a good price or not but that's besides the point. I got an offer and I have the option to sell it now. The reason I would be selling it is because I would upgrade to a new 2013 MacBook Pro. I'm currently a student going into 1st year of University. Since I'm a student I can get the new MacBook Pro for only $999.00 so I wouldn't have to spend too much money upgrading which is good. The only thing I wasn't sure of is if this is even an upgrade I should consider.
Here are the specs of the 2013 MacBook Pro:
    Processor: 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1600MHz memory
    Hard Drive: 500GB
    Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000
I don't know much about specs so I don't really know if a 1.8 Ghz Intel Core i7 is better than a 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5 or not. The program I'm going into doesn't involve a super high powered computer, but I do have one elective which is Computer Science which might require a high powered computer.
Anyways, I just wanted to upgrade because sometimes when I'm watching Netflix or YouTube videos that my MacBook Air tends to struggle sometimes. It gets very hot at the top left of the keyboard. It's not like the laptop lags or anything but it can get VERY hot. I try to keep the fan uncovered but I feel like there might be a big dust build up or something because it never did this when I first got it.
I'm also wondering if it'll be more convenient having a MacBook Air. I can get the brand new MacBook Air for $1049 which is only 50$ more than the Pro, but I imagine the pro is more for my money and my MacBook Air might even be faster than the newest MacBook Air.
Anyways any tips would be nice because I have a week to make my decision so thanks to anyone who is willing to help me out!

Perhaps you could re-state what you actually want to do. If you really want to program in Windows, then why are you looking at a Mac? You can certainly do C++ (or anything else) on a Mac, if you so desire.

  • Macbook Air HD video

My 1 year old Macbook Air (Late 2010), which I think is supposed to have 5 hour battery life, isn't quite as fast. My battery was 65%, and after watching a 1 hr 30 min movie, it is now 15%. The movie was in HD, but I don't know if that has to do with anything. Any ideas that can help me would be nice.

HD movies require more performance from the graphic card and the processor, so this may be normal. Note that Apple got 5 hours of battery with other tasks, not HD movies.
I think it's normal, but open "System Information" app, select "Power" in the sidebar, and copy here "Charge Information" and "Health Information" to check if there's something wrong
