Macbook Air (OS Lion) with very slow start up

Hi all,
I do not know why but my Macbook Air with OS Lion is taking to long to start up and this problem started without any reason.
The Software if updated.
I surfed on internet trying to find a solution, I experimented several potencial solutions but till now I could not solve the problem.
It is very quick shutingdown but it takes arround 30 min. to start up.
Thank you very much for your help

Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
thanks for your responce

  • I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear. However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
    The RAM modules are paored  2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and  6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

  • New Macbook Air i5 wireless is very slow and disconnect again and again. Any one has the same issue or some help??

I recently bought a new 13 inch Macbook air and wireless internet is really slow and disconnect again and again. However I hav another windows laptop at the same place and that never disconects or looses signals? wireless on this mac is too slow that I cannot even use to make a skype call. I am new mac user and getting a bit disappointed because of this bad performance.I googled about this issue and found that lot of people are having the same issue with macbook air. I switched off the bluetooth adaptor but still no progress. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I am experiencing something similar with my MBA 13"/i5/256GB.
To take it one step further, I started up a Terminal session and ran a ping against my wireless router. I see the same pattern repeated over and over: I get about 5 or 6 pings through, then 4 or 5 misses, then it reconnects again. When it reconnects, the first ping or two have times in thousands of milliseconds, where normal is maybe sub-millisecond to 4ms for the remaining few seconds.
I have other wireless devices, including iPhone, iPad, and an older MacBook - all work fine. The MBA is the only Lion device.

  • Wet MacBook Air... running very slow

Recently my 11" MacBook Air (mid 2010) had some wine spilled on it. The screen went black immediately and the power would not turn on. Put it in a giant bag of rice over night which did nothing except get rice stuck in the hinge. A friend took it all apart and did watever he did and it works now but it runs really slow, slower than a PC... you can't watch streaming video and applications take what seems like forever to open.
So my questions are: Do you know what part of the macbook is damaged to make it run that slow? And how much would Apple charge to fix it?
    Thanks

These laptops are not very repairable - they only have a few major components and they would be swapped rather than trying any sort of component level repair. As a first guess I would say that Apple would probably swap the main logic board and maybe the SSD. Depending on the screen they may also suggest swapping that. The cost of doing that would be a significant portion of the cost of a new machine.
If you have household insurance you may be covered for the accident. Depending on your policy it may be worth exploring that avenue.

  • MacBook Air over cooling with very loud sound

My Mac Book Air is over cooling even though it isn't hot. The fans run 24/7 until I turn my Laptop off once I turn it on again they run again. The fans are very very loud and I think it is making my Laptop slower. Any ideas?

Lion very slow starting apps with Firewire 800 drive mounted.
When my Firewire 800 drive is in sleep mode, when I start up an app like MS Excel or Addressbook. I get a spining wheel and a delay before the app launches. Any ideas? Never happened in 10.6.

Long shot: What format is the drive?

  • HT4410 I have just installed Windows 7 64-bit full version Home Premium using Bootcamp and cannot get access to the internet. I installed on a Macbook Air Mid 2012 with Mountain Lion. Are there some drivers that are missing from the Windows 7

Dear Apple. I have just installed Windows 7 64-bit full version Home Premium using Bootcamp and cannot get access to the internet. I installed on a Macbook Air Mid 2012 with Mountain Lion. Are there some drivers that are missing from the Windows 7 bootcamp install download from Apple

It is a Total Misconception that the Support files are installed when you are installing Windows, even if the USB drive that holds them is inserted in the system when doing the Windows install.
You must always Run the Setup.exe files from the support files or run the drivers individually once Windows has finished installing and booted to the desktop.
Also you really need to run the Boot Camp Control Panel Applet and check for updates as not all the newest drivers for full function of all the hardware is included with the original support download. That download is basically a generic version to get the system working and without doing the updates not everything will work properly.

  • Hi. I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 soon with 4 GB of RAM and wondering how much memory space does norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the mac. Thanks a lot :)

    Hi
I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 model with 4 GB ram soon. I was wondering how much space (memory) does Norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the computer. Also, I am going off to uni so will predominantly be using the laptop for surfing and MS office.
    Thanks a lot

Sorry to disagree mende1.  In this age of email attachments and social networks, it is actually a good idea to have a good antivirus on your system. {I realize that this is a religious argument and I will say no more}.  With that said, the general concensus is that Norton AV is terrible. It is intrusive and uses up a lot of cycles.
There are a lot of better AV clients out there.  I use ClamXav which is free and uses the clamav antivirus that is open source.

  • My macbook air, w/ Lion 10.8.2, is so slow suddenly.

My macbook air, w/ Lion 10.8.2, is so slow suddenly. I have run disk utility and applejack, and am also looking at the Activity Monitor. CPU system % is 80; 107 processes, 538 threads. System memory says wired 871.7 mb w/ VM size 228.35 GB, page ins 668.2 but no page outs. Disk activity shows lots of red spikes - peak 353 kb/sec.
    ideas?
    Thanks!

Hmm... that's really strange... I have almost the exact same model... and mine is running fine. I would suggest taking it to your local Apple Store and have a Genuis at the Genuis Bar look at it.

  • InDesign problems on Macbook Air running Lion.

    HI folks,
I have recently purchased a 2011 Macbook Air, running Lion. I have a copy of Indesign CS4 that I am trying to get running on this machine. I previously had it activated on my macbook pro and had no problems. I deactivated it from that computer and have activated it on the new machine. After creating a new document in InDesign I find that I get the beach ball and it won't do anything. Have any of you had a similar experience? Do any of you know the solution to this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    James.

Well, you haven't given us lots of detail - but only because there aren't that many details anyways, right?
Did you install from the original media? (It never would have occurred to me to just drag apps off one machine and drop them on another, but people do this sometimes.)
Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall? (That's what I'd do first if a fresh install of a program was borked from the very beginning.)
Have you tried it as a new user? (If it works in a new user account, then the problem is with your user account, not with your install of ID.)
There are other things to try - search the forums for removing the SING datastore, or resetting preferences - but really the uninstall/reinstall should make it work right off the bat, and it also should take less time than actually diagnosing the problem & fixing it.

  • Lion is very slow. I have problem to make copy of a file. How can I make a check  to see what is wrong?

Lion is very slow. The big problem now is when I need to make a copy of a file in an external HD. A file about 7 Gigas can take 4 hours!!!
Using Aperture I try to save a library in an external HD (another) with function "export project as a library" an takes hours for something around 1 giga.
Since I have Lion I can not use Time Machine. I have a Western Digital 2 Teras in raid 1. 1 tera for copy and 1 tera as an image. It's been impossible. I had to format the HD and when I try to start using Time machine my 600 gigas of data becomes in 7 days!!. 7 days !! for a backup. An usually after several hours (sometimes 20hrs,  sometimes 1 day and a half) the process stoped abrudtly... and that's it. star again.
How can I check or perform a exploration to see what is happening?
    thanks in advance
    RyJ

Is a Western Digital Studio Edition II 2T (in RAID 1 mirror). The HD has 2 drives 1T each an put one mirroring the second one.
HD is connected to Mac through Firewire 800.

  • Help! Macbook Air lost association with USB Airport hosted Time Machine Backup

Okay, so my wife's Macbook Air was doing Time Machine backup to USB drive attached to previous generation Airport Extreme...
We bought a brand new Airport router a couple of weeks ago, I plugged it in and everything went smoothly. Plugged in USN drive that attached to older APE router, and it's still visible on the network. However, ever since we got the new router, the existing backups are not associated with the Macbook Air anymore.
Yes, I can start over with a new backup file, but I was hoping to use the existing backup (it takes a while to backup wirelessly, and we lose the whole history if we wanted to recover previous versions of files that were backed up—I can't think of anything we'd need right now, but Murphy's Law will probably apply if I go ahead and erase the old and start new).
I was hoping all I would have to do was drag the old backup file onto the Time Machine icon to re-associate it with this computer, but I can't see any way to tell Time Machine, "hey, here's the backup file you are looking for... it's right here on the same USB drive attached to the new router."
(Also, before anyone says to make sure I have a backup of the backup, I do. The computer is backed up offsite with Backblaze, too.)
Perhaps it will be best to just start from scratch with a new Time Machine backup, that just seems like overkill, since there was nothing wrong or corrupt with the existing Time Machine file, I just switched what router it was attached to. Thanks for any advice/enlightenment.

    I guess I have a few comments.
Apple has an opt out.. they do not support Time Machine backups on older Airport Extreme. Apple have always stated it is unreliable and so refused to support it.. only with Gen6 of the AE have they changed to supporting TM backups.
From your point of view it should have worked.. it may indeed still work. But the change of network is significant and it will take some work on your part.
    1. I need to know what OS is the MBA running??
    2. Moving a disk from one network location to another, I would strongly recommend a full reset of Time Machine on the computer.
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    3. Pondini in the same reference has some info about inheriting old backups .. slightly different context but it also could help.
    see B5 and B6
    4. It is also possible to move old backups into a new backup.. but this is then going too far.
I would simply buy a new USB drive.. and keep the old backup drive for a few months until your new one builds up sufficient history to be sure you will not need the old ones.. at that point you can use the old backup drive again after a reformat.
    5. To do the new backup, since wireless is indeed a long and burdensome chore to make that crucial first backup, buy a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.. assuming your MBA is recent enough. Ethernet is so worthwhile having it is required not optional extra. The cost at $35 is one of the cheapest adapters for a very expensive interface..

It is now running Yosemite 10.10.1. I seem to have plenty of memory but the machine still runs slower than before installing Yosemite. Excel has a very noticeable lag when opening and loading files.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I ran through the various steps as suggested including resetting the SMC.
I would say that there was about a 10% improvement. Although one of the icons still bounced for the count of 40
I'm still wondering why from the About this Mac, then System Report. it refers to my name MacBook Pro (2).
All the various problems seem to have started with the upgrade to Yosemite.

  • Can a 128 ssd storage still effectively work if I install windows 8.1 plus msoffice and a window-based proposal system? I plan to buy a macbook air entry level with 1.7 gh i5 processor.

If you are going to use Mac OS X and its associated applications, and a BootCamp partition with Windows 8, and MS Office and all of the work created there, you will more than likely run out of space on a 128 GB SSD pretty quickly...especially if you put any music, photos or videos on it.  Those things take a lot of space so you will have to be very, very careful about what you want to put on a 128 GB storage space.  You would be better off going for 512 GB with what you plan on doing with it.
