Macbook Air Screen keeps turning off while in use

Hi all,
I've had my Macbook Air for about 10 days now - it was working fine for the first 5 days, then I went away for a long weekend break, came home, switched it on and now it is all messed up.
Randomly and frequently while the computer IS IN USE the display will turn off for a seemingly random amount of time then come back on with no input from me.  So just to be clear, this is not the power profile, or the energy saving setting... what happens is that while I am mid-typing or in the middle of a mouse movement (it has happend a couple of times during me typing this first paragraph already) the display on the Macbook will go completely black, as in the blacklight goes off and nothing can be seen on the screen - then, no matter if I carry on typing or if I just take my hand off the keys and give it no input what-so-ever, after some time (as short as 5 seconds or as long as 30 seconds) the screen will pop back on as if nothing had happened.
Some other things to note:
If I carry on typing when the screen goes dark the chracters i've typed are there when the screen comes back on - so it seems to be only affecting the display.
Whether I wiggle the mouse, bash keys or just sit back in frustration has no bearing on how long it takes for the screen to come back on.
It appears to occour more often when the macbook is on a solid surface like my desk as opposed to on my lap - though it has occured in both locations.
I have power cycled, restarted, rebooted etc a million times.
It happens in both OSX and Windows boots
It is truly random, I can go as long an hour without it happening, then it will happen 20 times in 5 minutes.
The keyboard backlight stays on throughout (if it is on already)
If this was a 5 year old laptop I'd be straight away assuming this was a display cable, inverter cable or lid-close switch problem, but it's only 10 days old!  I'll be very annoyed if this is a hardware issue this soon.  What should be my next course of action?? Phone Apple?  Or take it straight to an Apple store?
My only worry is that its impossible to recreate the fault on demand, its very random - however I did record a video on my iPhone of it doing it constantly for a 3 minute period while I was using the computer (complete with my sighs of frustration as a soundtrack!!).  Will that be enough to convince them if I'm unlucky (or lucky depending on which way you look at it!) and it doesn't display the fault when they inspect it??
I tried to embed the video but the video button above is greyed out, whats up with that?!
Thanks,
Seb

Step 1
Select "System Preferences" from the Apple drop-down menu at the top left corner of the desktop. Alternatively, you can open the System Preferences window by clicking the “System Preferences” icon in the dock.
Step 2
Click the "Energy Saver" icon in the Hardware section. The Energy Saver window opens.
Step 3
Click the "Settings For" drop-down box and select "Power Adapter" from the drop-down list. Click the "Optimization" drop-down box and select "Custom" from the list.
Step 4
Click the "Computer Sleep" slider and drag it all the way to the right. The slider will stop at "Never." Click the "Display Sleep" slider and drag it to "Never" as well.
Step 5
Click the "Settings For" drop-down box again and select "Battery" from the list. Select "Custom" from the Optimization drop-down box. Move both sliders to "Never."

  • I have a new MacBook Air which keeps turning off by itself and now won't turn on at all...

It's been working fine since I've had it but yesterday it kept turning off by itself and then within minutes off turning it back on it would do it again. Also the little box kept popping up asking if I wanted to sleep, restart etc as if I had pressed the power button. I tried to turn it off completely and now it won't turn back on at all. If I plug the charger in the green light comes on but nothing happens on the actual MacBook itself. What do i do ?

  • Hello, when I turn up my macbook it start lagging  a lot and also when it is turning off while I use it it works perfectly

Hello, when I turn up my macbook it start lagging  a lot and also when it is turning off while I use it it works perfectly anyone help

Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down. Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Anti virus software, as well as third party Mac cleaning utilities such as MacKeeper  and CleanMyMac can also slow your Mac down.
Check to see if the startup disk needs repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important data first before using OS X Recovery.

  • IPhone turns off while in use.

My iPhone keeps turning off while I am using it.  Battery at 50%.

what have you done thus far to troubleshoot?  Have you taken the basic troubleshooting steps recommended in the User Guide?

  • It's been power cycling (turns off while in use) with increasing frequency, and now won't even turn on. What gives?

My phone has been turning off while in use, and would, in the past, recover if I turned it off and on.
Now it won't do anything, and I know that the battery is not dead. What gives?

    Hello Hoges,
About your question of connecting the Elitepad directly to another PC via USB.
Since the tablet is considered a full windows PC, you cannot connect it directly to another PC via USB.
Androids and Apple iphones, etc etc. are different than a windows PC. Even if you used an OTG usb cable.
Windows PC's could be connected via a crossover cable but it is very particular and requires an ethernet port on both machines.
You can connect them via a Network though, like connecting via a Home Group through a wireless connection.
Better still, you can backup your files on a cloud service like Dropbox, Onedrive or Google and then download them to the other machine. If both machines are using Windows 8.1, you can use HP Connect to backup and transfer files.
If you have a usb to micro usb adapter, you can use a pen drive to tranfer files with.
I do not know anything about the magazine articles you are downloading, but if done so via an app in the Windows store, couldnt those be redownloaded anyway without transfering?
IF the tablet is still under warranty and the charging port is loose, you can contact HP Support to see what your options are.
    Hope it helps.

  • For several months my MacBook Pro screen randomly turns off, but keyboard is on. Today the computer just turned itself off. Why?

For several months my MacBook Pro screen randomly shuts off. The keyboard is on. To fix it I use the power button to shut the computer off. Today the entire computer turned off. It took several tries to turn it back on. What is causing this?

    Are kernel panics occurring?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If this problem is related to software, this should fix this problem.
If it doesn't work and you can start your computer, open System Information or System Profiler (it's in /Applications/Utilities), choose Power in the sidebar, and copy here "Charge Information" and "Health Information".
If you can't start the MacBoook, the only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller

  • DVR 620 keeps turning off while recording

I've been recording dvd's a lot in the last few months, but this just started today.  I can't find anything in the manual about this.  Does the dvr part need to be cleaned from time to time?

Describe in more detail what is happening. Are you trying to dub from VHS to DVD? If so, can you play back the VHS tape without a problem? Which kind of DVD is it? DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW? And is there sufficient space? What setting is your record speed? Not dubbing, just recording a tv show onto a Memorex DVD+R (16X 4.7GB 120min) disc.  It was a new disc, recording speed SP, which is  good for 2 hours, and it was only 30 minutes into the recording.  Not only did it stop recording, the player/recorder turned off.  It wasn't programmed, and I was in the room, so I grabbed the remote and turned the player/recorder back on and hit record again and it recorded to the end of the show. It did that 3 times yesterday but not once today.  I've only recorded one show today though.

  • PS Now keeps turning off while I'm playing.

I bought a game on PS Now and I'm in the middle of playing it when it gives me 20 seconds before it turns off. My speed test at home says I'm clocking in at a pretty good rate. I don't care if it goes to 240p, I just want to play the game I payed for. Are you going to reimburse me?

  • My G7X keeps turning off while shooting video..any tips?

I am new to Canon...coming from the Nikon world..and having a problem trying to shoot video with my new G7X.
The camera turns off after a few minutes...any tips?

A very nice choice of camera's that G7X is !!
A speed class of 6 or higher is reccommened to achievve the highest recording lenght in time and GB's.
Just how long before it shuts off ?
Have you formatted it properly in the camera ? Tried a different card ?
This is from your manual and Ive looked at many Powershot manuals...it is the same or very similar for all.

  • I have a g5 desktop and I am having an issue with it turning off while im using it. I think it may be something to do with the cooling system

I am wondering what could be causing my computer to shut off while i'm using it. I think it is something to do with the cooling system because it feels hot to the touch and will not turn back on for awhile until it cools down

    Is yours an iMac G5:
    or a PowerMac G5:
There is a big difference in the cooling systems. If you have the tower, we can get your post moved to the forum where all the G5 tower gurus hang out.

  • My macbook pro screen keeps turning blue?

This just started about ten minutes ago but its happened three times so I'm kind of concerned. My screen background on my Macbook Pro turned blue after I refreshed a Netflix page. None of my open windows shut down but the image I have as my background was gone and the light blue screen took its place. When I went back into my settings to put the picture back up, it showed that it was still set as my desktop screen, even though it clearly was not. I had to click on another image and then click back on the one I wanted to get it to reset. Is there any reason why this is happening? And can I fix it or do I have to take it in to the apple store and see if they can take a look at it?

    A few suggestions:
When troubleshooting, disconnect all devices from your computer.
Restart in Safe Mode:  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu.
    Restart
After you reach your desktop, repair permissions and again restart your computer.  Directions are in the OS Help Menu if you need assistance.
You should call Apple tech support before your standard warranty runs out.  Hopefully, you have AppleCare.
Hey, thanks for your suggestions but when I tried the first part which was the run in safe mode it only made parts of it, specifically safari, lag even more to the point where I could not load pages without it lagging. For the second part about the repair disk, is that the same thing as re-booting your mac or is it different thing? Thanks again for your help!

  • Screen keeps turning off

i had broke my blackberry screen about 3 weeks ago, and got it replaced with an old blackberry i have. now im experiencing problems NUM staying locked in the top right corner and the screen going on and off.
can this be from the replaced screen? or something else?

I have exchanged my Blackberry 8900 FIVE TIMES NOW!!!!!!! This last time I was told that I would be eligible for an exchange to a model that was not defective regarding the roller ball, flash being constantly on and freezing. I was told I could get an in store exchange at no cost for the 9300…Well after going to 3 stores and all out of stock, I found out its discontinued….So I was told T-mobile would send me one. I called back and they told me it would cost me and would extend my contract and that the only way to get out of the contract was death. I was disgusted and couldn’t continue talking to the supervisor. I called back today and was told that I was eligible for a 9300 since this was the FIFTH exchange….Then they tried to process the order and they said blackberry wouldn’t allow it and offered me a Nokia. That’s ridiculous that T-Mobile lets Blackberry dictate their exchanges. I’ve been without texting, e-mail, and maps for a week and been on the phone with so many people at T-Mobile, total waste of time and costly.
I can’t wait for my contract to terminate in December!

  • Brand new iPad 2 16GB screen keeps turning black while I try to set it up.

It is fully charged yet when I'm trying to set it up, I'll get through the first couple of steps then the screen goes black and it shuts down. I literally opened it from its sealed box less than 4 hours ago.

Try rebooting your iPad.  Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons at the SAME time for about 10 seconds (ignore the red slider to shut down) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will restart.
If after this, your iPad still exhibits issues, I'd make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store.  Have then check it out.  If they determine it is deffective, get a refund, not an exchange.  The reason is they could give you a refurbished iPad as opposed to a brand new one.  Once you get the refund, buy a brand new one and chances are you won't have any issues.
