Macbook air sometimes loses all sound?

Occasionally my mid-2013 macbook air 11" will completely lose sound output both through headphones and the internal speakers. This happens randomly and no matter of turning sound up and down or muting and unmuting fixes it, I have to restart the whole system each time. This is pretty annoying considering it happens often. Anyone know a fix/reason for this?

Plug in the headphone and remove it

Macbook air Wi Fi and sound stops every time it goes to sleep. i have to  restart it every time to use wifi and sounds. this started happening just after the latest upgrade to OS X. any reasons why its doing that and how to fix it.

Test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly."
    3. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    4. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    5. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    6. In some cases, the problem has been resolved by repairing permissions on the startup volume.
    7. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    8. Reinstall OS X.

  • My new macbook air sometimes has trouble starting up. It gets stuck at various stages. I have reinstalled Lion twice. That solves the problem for a few days and then in reoccurs. Any ideas? Thanks, Marty

My new macbook air sometimes has difficulty booting up. I reinstalled Lion twice. That soves the problem temporarily and then after a few days it reoccurs. It also has trouble at times opening mail or Microsoft Word. Any ideas? Thanks, Marty

    Marty,
Can you elaborate on what you mean by "difficulty" during the boot sequence? When/where is the difficulty occurring? Are you getting to the Apple logo? Apple logo with spinning gear? Blue screen? Login window? There's many phases to the boot sequence and when it fails can go a long way in determing what's causing the problem.
Also, what sort of third party software is installed? It sounds like at a minimum you've installed Microsoft Office? Anything else?
Lastly, after you reinstall Lion do you perform a restore from backup or remigrate your data/content right back into the new OS? If so that could potentially be the problem right there. But truthfully there's more information that needs to be provided to begin recommending troubleshooting steps.

  • Belkin iPhone Headphone Adapter is making my iPhone lose ALL sound ability.

Before I get further into this, I wanted to say that I have since discovered how to make this issue not happen. I wanted to post it incase other people have experienced this problem as it's very strange and has already resulted in me having to get my first iPhone replaced cause I (and Apple) thought the phone was malfunctioning.
Issue: While using the Belkin iPhone Headphone Adapter attached to a car cassette adapter my phone sometimes has severe sound problems. When I arrive at my destination and need to unplug my iPhone, if music is still playing and I unplug the phone from the Belkin adapter, the resulting issue is that *I lose all sound on my phone*. It stops having an audible ring (though it will still vibrate), it does not alert me about new text messages, it also (and this is the most frustrating) makes it where if someone calls me I cannot hear them unless I put them on speaker phone.
Resolution: If for some reason this has happened to you, all you need to do is to make sure that you turn the music off while your Belkin adapter is still plugged into your phone. After the music has been paused, you can remove the adapter and it should work fine.

Thanks for posting the workaround, but it isn't just your Belkin adapter...it happens with all of the headphones as well -- if you lose your sound, put your headphones back in, and out - you might need to repeat a couple times.
This seems to have something to do with the sensors Apple builds into their iPods starting from 4th Generation onward (including the iPhone) which control your music starting and stopping when you pull your headphone jacks out -- apparently it also causes other sound problems as well.

  • I am unable to sync my iPad with my new MacBook Air without losing all photos even though both are linked to the same iTunes account

I am unable to sync my iPad with my new MacBook Air without losing all photos even though both are linked to the same iTunes account

Transferring photos from your computer has nothing to do with your iTunes account/Apple ID.
Photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring photos from another, all photos on the iPad that were transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPad first - even if the photos were transferred from the old or different computer to the new computer being used for syncing.
When transferring photos from your computer, what is named the iPod Photo Cache is created on your computer for the photos that are transferred and why you see new photos being transferres are optimized before the actual transfer process. The iPod Photo Cache for these photos on the computer the photos were transferred from is not available on your new computer.
Since all photos on your iPad that were transferred from the old or different computer should remain on that computer, transfer the photos from that computer to your new computer. These photos on your iPad will be erased with the first sync but will be re-transferred along with a new iPod Photo Cache for these photos being created on your new computer.

  • Installed Yosemite om my MacBook Air, resulted in no Sound at all. No input devices no output devices. What can  do? Have had 2 meetings with Apple support with no results.

Recently, I installed Yosemite on my MacBook Air. After that I had no sound. Not even the start up chime. In Sound preferences there are no input devices and no output devices. I have had three meetings with Apple support with no results. Can anyone help? This seems to be a regular problem.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My macbook air suddenly has no sound

All of a sudden there is no sound on my macbook air. I can click the volume up & down buttons and they look like the volume is getting louder or softer, but there is no sound at all.
And I just checked - iTunes is no longer playing (I just did the update).

Thanks Kappy - it fixed that and the other problem I was having. It's usually the first thing I do after trying obvious stuff - I must be tired to have not thought to do it this time.

  • Connecting macbook air with bose wireless sound link?

Can someone tell me how to connect a previously paired macbook air to a bose wireless soundlink?  I can pair them, but they will not connect.

I had the same issue with my macbook air intel i5, latest os, and this is the way it worked for me:
1.- When you pair for the first time your macbook and your bose soundlink, your soundlink will appear in your Bluetooth menu at the left side list, but it is not conected yet... just recognized... so your soundlink doesnt make the tipical pairing sound...
2.- So the next step is to Set your Soundlink as Audio Device, in the same Bluetooth menu (below the devices list) just select the Soundlink so it becomes blue and then click on the mesh or gear icon and you,ll get a submenu, then just select Set as Audio Device, and done!
Please note that even at the time you do that your soundlink is not going to do the pairing sound, you need to start playing music or movies or games to get actually paired, and for some reason if you stop playing it for a few minutes it gets unpaired again and only start again if you play again music, movies or games... kind of anoying because then you will hear the pairing noise very often...
    I hope this help somebody.

  • Hard pan to the right loses all sound

    Hey all,
Been noticing this problem for a while.  There is a dramatic volume dropoff when I pan an instrument, MIDI or audio, to the right.  To the left works fine but to the right basically just makes it disappear.  If I pan the master track to the right I lose almost all sound.  This comes out of my headphones and speakers.  When things are centered, they're evenly balanced between left and right, it's only when I pan it that I lose sound.
I use an MBox 2 Pro on a Mac Pro Early 2008 with Logic Pro 9.  Lotsa pros. Please let me know how I can fix this.  Thanks!

Maybe your query was answered (can't see any replies though looks like you got one), but if not...... the pan control acts like a balance pot not a true panner. To properly pan the whole signal, load the Direction Mixer as an insert on the track and do your panning through it (logic plug under 'Imaging").
(EDIT - oh I see it's happening with midi as well...., yes check your interface is connected properly L-L and R-R and maybe check if a cable is at fault. If you have active speakers, are the amp levels set similarly? Weird it happens through the headphone outs as well on the interface. Not familiar with your interface but I would definitely look at the level settings/balance levels for it in its software or hardware)

  • Macbook Air very slow all of a sudden

I bought a Macbook air end Feb - 1.6Ghz and 80GB. I also have XP with 40GB HD partitioned.
I have installed Norton 360 for my windows partition.
After the 1st month which was great, I now find the performance very slow if I have powerpoint and word and excel open along with safari.
Is there something I can do to get back to the great speed one had earlier?

    HI,
Checked free disk space lately? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.
Boot from your install disk and run Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.

  • Updating RAM on 2007 macbook, do I lose all my files, bookmarks etc?

I am updating RAM memory to enable me to go from Tiger to Snow Leopard. But worried that I will lose all my documents, web bookmarks etc. Will they remian if I change the RAM modules? Sorry I am a very basic computer user!
    Thanks

In simple words, RAM has nothing to do with storing documents; your documents etc are stored on your hard disk, so upgrading RAM will not damage or wipe out your data.... BUT... since everything is inter-connected, electric surge from ANY component can influence your hard disk (thus your data) in the worst case scenario. Therefore, it is always advised to backup your system before digging into your hardware - Better save than sorry!
