Macbook air starts-shutdowns continuously

hello,
i have a macbook air 2010 model that keeps showing the "are you sure you want to shut down " msg every 4-5 seconds...this happened in the beginning, now it seems to been stuck in a continuous loop of restarting....even trying to start from the recovery hd doesnt help...any ideas?

Since this MBA has a history of looping, best approach now might be to visit the Apple genius bar and have them check it out and find out what is really going wrong.  If it is out of warranty, do you have Apple Care?  Testing is usually free, repair/replacement not unless it is covered by warranty or AC.

Tried SMU, PRAM, MMU resets, but nothing helps...
    Thank you for your support.

You need to take it in for service, it may be a stuck key or component failure.

  • Macbook air 2012 Shutdown problem!!

Hi all! I have a problem with my Macbook air 2012. OS 10.9.5.
This morning my sound were not working so i rebooted my machine. And here the problems start. My macbook now goes into sleep mode after 5 Seconds! And when it does so, i have to unplug/plug magsafe to get it back on. Then another 5 seconds before it shuts down again. I have tried SMC and PRAM resets. I am not able to do a erase+reinstall because the Internett is lost every 5 seconds due to the black screen. However when i pressed OPTION+ON button to get into the reboot menu the screen didnt shut down. Until I clicked on Recovery, then it started again.  So, has anyone had the same problem? Any solutions? Is there a connection to the no-working sound? Help is extremely appriciated!  :-)
I can still charge my phone while the screen goes black, if thats helpful for you guys.

It will be longer for the first shutdown, but should be faster thereafter. But then how much longer is it? I have a couple systems where it takes at least 15 seconds to shutdown.

  • Need help to get my Macbook Air start up

Just anyone knows about an apple macbook air notebook. I by misstake shut it down doing a software update.... now it wont start up.

Shutting down during an update can be very damaging to the stability of the operating system. It can even render the machine unable to boot.
You should probably try to do a "repair install" of the operating system. What version are you running?
For the moment, assuming you have Lion, boot to the Recovery Partition by turning tre computer on, while holing down the Option key. Select the Recover HD, and boot to it.
First run the Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" and Repair Permissions" on the startup drive partition. Then you can either give it another try to boot up normally, and/or proceed to do a reinstallation of Lion. The reinstallation should not disturb your existing data, but as always that is why you have to maintain a backup regimen, just in case the worst happens.

Hopefully after you are finished, all your apps will work as before, and none were damaged during the untimely shutdown which precipitated all of this. Again, if it has problems, the alleviation of such is dependednt on the health of your backups.

  • How much usable "space" does a MacBook Air start with?

I am contemplating purshasing a MacBook air and would like to know how much "useable" space it starts with. I know there are two options for storage (128GB and 256GB) but I would like to know how much of that is left after a base installational of Mavericks.
Also, is there a resource that will tell me how much space common apps will take up? (Numbers, Pages, etc)
    Thank you

  • Macbook air slow shutdown

My brand new macbook air 13" seems to have a pretty slow shutdown time (20s+).
As I am new to mac I spent several days trying to find a fix without any succes.
After a shutdown I just ran a console search for a exit timeout and found the following:
    01/11/13 00:04:38,068 com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.appkit.xpc.openAndSavePanelService[261]) Exit timeout elapsed (20 seconds). Killing
I think this might be the problem but I am not sure which terminal command should be used to reduce the killing time.
Could anyone please help me ?

I've just read on another thread that it could be lion 10.7.1. I can't say this for sure since I immediately restored my time machine backup. I'll re-install lion and check it out, then, I'll put my time machine back.
    Pffieuw, wish me luck.

  • TS2570 macbook air : start with grey screen... help !!!

I have a new macbook air (3 months old) and all the sudden when I start it I have a grey screen with a question mark. The relevant Apple support page doesn't take into consideration the fact that you can't put an install disk into a macbook air. Help !

    Thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately, I had already tried this online recovery (it also works if you boot holding the option) but the utility program didn't offer me the possibility to repair (when I selected the disk, this option wasn't available. In fact, I couldn't choose any option at all for my disk).
I had just done the last system update proposed by Apple today. I never had any problem with a mac before and I am really in trouble in my work because of that. How can I try to save the most important files I was working on ? I am in Brazil so there is no Apple store available near my house.
I also have external hard disk, an imac and a macbook but I don't know if I can use any of them for that...

  • Would a MacBook Air start off the charger with the battery removed???

I have a MacBook Air that got wet. I replaced the DC-in and that didn't work.I disconnected the battery cable and connected the AC and the MagSafe LED flashes green at a rate of about once per second. It's also very faint, but you can see it in the dark.
I know it could be logic board, but is this also a sign of a dead battery?
In other words: if one disconnected the battery in a MacBook Air, would it still power on from just the AC?

Yes, I'm aware. That's not what I was asking.
    Well thanks for the points
I don't know whether it will start without battery, but under your circumstances I would not try until a week had passed with the MBA in a warm dry location, preferably upside down to try to move moisture away from the electrics

  • Why doesn't my 3-week old MacBook Air 13" shutdown in about 3 seconds anymore? It now takes about 10 seconds to do so.  Last major activity I can think of is the software upgrade which I did yesterday.

My MacBook Air is barely a month and it suddenly shuts down way slower than it used to.  It used to take just 3 seconds.  I do not have much installed, except for an HP Printer and the MS Office suite.   It shut down just as fast even after I installed them.. I noticed it shut down at least about 10 seconds sometime after I updated the software yesterday to Mac OS X version 10.7.1.  Is this nornal?  I would prefer the snappier shut down process.:-(

  • Macbook air starts up but do not run.

it stays with the apple logo on the screen and is procesing, but nothing happens.
    What do I do ?

There are a number of possible reasons your Mac isn't starting up. Firstly, if you have anything connected to it, unplug everything (except the power adapter) and try starting up again.
Assuming that doesn't help, or you have no devices connected to it, make sure it is fully shut down and then reboot. Immediately you hear the startup chime, hold down the shift key. Keep the shift key down until the Apple logo appears. This is an attempt to boot into Safe mode, which (like the Windows equivalent) means the system will try and load just the core components of the operating system necessary for it to run. This will tell us whether the problem is relatively simple, such as a driver which the system can't load or doesn't understand (in which case the system should boot into Safe mode) or if there is something a little more serious that has gone wrong, such as  badly corrupted MacOS, or a RAM or drive fault (in which case Safe mode won't work either).
Let us know how you get on with that, and it may also help us to know a little more about your system, such as which model it is, which version of MacOS it is running and whether you have had any other problems with it before this current issue.

  • Macbook Air unexpeced shutdown / freezing.

    Two issues likely unrelated, nonetheless:
    1. Shutdown - I was in the middle of a presentation and it went immediately to a black screen.  The computer didn't sleep, it came back up to the login screen and everything I had opened was gone, almost as if it was shutdown.  Second time it's happened.  I was not touching the keyboard so it wasn't an accidental shortcut.  I thought maybe someone was having a laugh and configured a hotcorner to sleep (which they didn't but still wouldn't explain it anyways).  I was in a dark room, someone had mentioned it has 'tricked' their mac into sleeping but not shutting down.
    2. I often extend to a second monitor, and sometimes swap that out for a hardwired connection.  There have been multiple occasions where I take out the monitor usb and plug in the ethernet usb and it completely freezes with everything still on screen, requires physically holding the power button for several seconds.
    Thoughts?

  • Why endless shutdown during booting? - Macbook Air 10.8.3 update

After updating from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 my Macbook Air 13" mid 2012 started to shutdown during booting.
I have tried to reset the SMC and PROMs several times with no result - still shutdown during booting.
The same result when starting in "safe" mode - shutdown in the end of booting.
When booting in verbose mode the last lines befor shutdown was:
AppleLMUController::smcReadKey received error 0x84 when reading key 'MSLD'
AppleLMUController::smcReadKey received error 0x84 when reading key 'ALV0'
It's no problem using the macbook air in target mode and use as the startup disk on another macbook.
The other mac start fine and run smoothly on the system 10.8.3 on the disk from the macbook air that shutdown during booting.
Before updating there was no problem with the computor...
    What to do?

Run the #12 OnyX cache clearing routine, it's a lot of stuff to do and will take awhile, but it's very through on reseting your sub-system items like it was when it came from the factory.

  • 2014 Macbook Air turns off intermittently for no reason.

Several days ago my Macbook Air started completely shutting down randomly, even if I've got 95% battery. It doesn't go through a shutdown cycle or anything, just suddenly a black screen. I'm usually able to just turn it back on but there have been a few instances where I can't get it back on. The only way I can get it to come back on after that is a combination of dumb luck and endless SMC resets. It seems that I don't have this issue when the laptop is plugged in to the charger.
From my perspective it seems as if there's a software issue. The battery is fine and the charger works fine. It almost seems as if somewhere along the line the software screws up and for whatever reason thinks that the battery is dead, which would explain why It doesn't happen when I'm running off of an external power source.
Any suggestions on how to keep this from happening?

  • How to restore macbook air

My Macbook Air starts up and freezes on the Apple logo with the loading spiral and wont do anything else from there.
Is there a way that I can completely restore the macbook air - there's nothing important on it that I need.
    Thanks,
    Andy

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
