MacBook Air Storage help on 10.7.5

OK well I have a MacBook Air version 10.7.5 and I barely ever use it. Lately I tried to download a few things and it told me I'm low on space. (its the 60+ GB version) I checked the info tab "About this mac" and my storage says its filled up with "other" up to 35 GB. (my other stuff barely takes up 5 GB) Help?  Im new to Mac so please just helpful and detailed explanations.  I know how to free up space on PCs but not on Macs  I just cant seem to locate where all this "Other" stuff is located to remove it.  I mean I know you need space for the operating system but I'm sure its not 35GB.  Thank you.

Other refers to everything that doesn't fit in the other categories: system files, data, documents, mail, etc.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
  1. See Lion's Storage Display.
  2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
  3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
  4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
  5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
  6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

This may seem obvious, but presumably you have authorized the MacBook Air in iTunes?

  • My Macbook Air storage is messed up.

I wanted to download the new Itunes to my computer. I didn't have enough storage to, and I noticed that movies were taking up 25 GBS on my computer. I put all of the movies on an external drive and deleted them off my macbook air. I checked my stoage, and it said that I still had 22.53 GBs of movies, even though I deleted all of my movies! I don't know how to fix this.
    Any help is appreciated
Also, what is the normal amount of time it takes to update itunes?

First verify that the movies really are not on your internal hard drive. Depending on how you have iTunes configured it's possible that you removed them from your computer put them on the external drive, told iTunes where to find them on the external drive and then had them copy back to the internal drive, oops.
If the movies really are not on your computer any longer than you'll need to attempt to repair the drive. How you'll do this depends upon whether you have Mac OS 10.6 or OS 10.7 or greater. If you have 10.6 restart your computer with the system restore disk and from there select utilities, run disk utility and repair the drive. If you have 10.7 or waiter restart the computer holding the option key and select the recovery partition. There you can run disk utility and attempt to repair the drive.

  • My new macbook air storage keep going down without doing anything.

so, i got a new macbook air 11 inch, 120 gb. i set it all up and stuff and when i check my storage i only got 99 and stuff left. how can that be? i didn't download anything, all i did was set it up. I download stuff and delete it so my storage keeps going up and down. Then one day, i have to restore my cousin's iPad for her using my macbook which has 99 something gb, then after that's done, the storage goes down to 93 gb. Seriously, i didn't do anything. please explain to me if the stuff i do takes storage or not becauseI have to save storage for school works. Thank you for reading

Move your cursor up to the Apple menu and select About this Mac then select Storage from the options at the top of the dialog box that opens. This Spotlight view will show you how much of the drive is being used to store Applications, Files, Music, etc. Other is something of a catchall group so it doesn't really help.
One explanation for the "missing" space is Backups. If you are using TimeMachine the computer will make backups to the internal drive whenever it isn't connected to the TimeMachine drive. This 'missing' space really isn't missing because if you really need it the computer will automatically delete the internal backups to free it up for you.
Another explanation are cache files and system logs. Your programs and the operating system need to keep temporary files and they aren't always immediately deleted. Your browser(s) also create cache files which makes your internet surfing experience much faster for sites you frequently visit. These caches can be quite large.
To delete/trim system and application caches you can restart your computer while holding the shift key. This is a safe boot and among other things it will delete/trim caches. Reboot normally once you get to the Finder. Also, remember to empty the trash can - putting stuff in the trash doesn't immediately delete it. If you use iPhoto you must manually delete its trash too.

  • Can any MacBook Air owners help with CS2 installation?

I had the old Photoshop CS2 disk installed on a 2006 MacBookPro, which crashed before I could deactivate, etc. Bought a 2013 MacBook Air. Hooked it to a disk drive before learning that CS2 disks are obsolete. Contacted Adobe and was provided a download link and new Serial Number instead. Successfully downloaded CS2 from their link to my MacBookAir but keep getting this vague error message when I try to install: The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. I went back to the Help Chat thinking that was "contacting the software manufacturer" but was sent to the Forums instead. I know I have enough storage space available. I wish the error code was specific, so I'd know what to try... Any tips?

Then there's no way of installing or running CS2 on Yosemite.

  • Very quick battery drain on mid 2013 macbook air please help!

hello, my 13" macbook air is losing battery very quickly and i don't know why or what to do...
i tried to reset the SMC and deleting all my cache files... i have closed all running applications and the battery save preferences are on default...
I'm running OS X Mavricks and when i first installed it i did get about 14 hours of battery life with normal use, but now i only get as high as 6 hours.
what can i do to get things back on track?
    thanks to anyone who helps!

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the limit for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
    2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.9 or later.
    3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
    4. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • I have an android phone which is now dis-connected; I traded in for an iphone5c, which, by the way, I love.  Now I am trying to figure out how to retrieve the many photos on my silent android and move them onto my Macbook Air.  Help?

Does anyone have advice about how to move my photos from my android phone to my Macbook Air?  The phone is no longer in service (I traded to an iphone) and I can't locate my cable--which may not have helped, anyway.  I tried inserting my micro memory card into a USB reader, and the computer will not acknowledge any photos from the card.  Thoughts?

I think you will find the cable to be very necessary.
For some phones - samsung for example, you may need to down load their manager program (I think samsung's is called Kies or keis)  A bit like how one uses itunes to connect to a iphone.
Once you have the cable and are connected, you should see a file system and look for the DCIM directory.

  • I am having problems updating my iPhoto on my MacBook Air, please help?

I started to update iPhoto on my MacBook Air, but I had bad wifi at home so I paused it. But now that I have good and fast wifi, I press Resume and it asks for my apple ID, so I put it, but then it says that the connection failed, can someone please help!

    Back up all data.
Quit the App Store application if it's running. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    open $TMPDIR../C
Press return. A folder should open. From that folder, delete the subfolder named "com.apple.appstore".
Launch the App Store and try again.

  • My iPad won't connect to my iPad mini.  The speaker works fine on my MacBook Air.  Help!

    Help!
I've been trying to get my Sony SRS-BT5 bluetooth speaker to connect to my iPad mini and the iPad won't recognize it.  It doesn't show up on the list of devices when bluetooth is searching.  I've tried restarting both devices dozens of times.  I've tried it normally, when they are charging, and when they are fully charged.  I've tried it with the NFC turned on and turned off.  I've searched Sony's site and can't find any troubleshooting information.  Although, because the speaker works just fine with my MacBook Air, I think it's a problem with my iPad.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Although it might not help, it would not hurt to reset the iPad by holding the home and power keys down until the Apple logo appears (15-20 sec).

  • No "enable Java" function on Macbook Air. Help!

I am having problem updating to the latest Flash player version. It kept showing "close safari"
after some research, i found out that my MacBook Air has no "enable Java" function.
    any advice?

Java has nothing to do with Flash, and enabling it would not help you install Flash. Log out or restart the computer withou launching Safari and try again.

did you put your Air to sleep with headphones attached, or closed the monitor with phones attached?
Do not sleep your Air (close the monitor with headphones attached) with headphones attached, this is known to affect some Air under Mavericks.
      * this occurrence is being looked into.
Much testing on my own and others as well show that, in some instances, this occurs in Mavericks.
If you choose you may contact Apple for an appt and diagnostics.
However as said, refrain from having phones attached when you close the monitor to prevent this until it is resolved
    SMC reset and re verify
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Both seem good, I read Speck may be a bit lighter that would help to prevent lid from closing when opened. Prob no big deal.
