MacBook Air SufperDive (USB) on regular MacBook...?

Will the new MacBook Air SuperDrive optical drive, for USB, operate on a regular MacBook? Or does it only work on a MacBook Air models?
My 13 month old MacBook has a dead Superdrive and it's around $300 to replace it, whereas the MacBook Air Superdrive is only $99. Would be a great option for me...
???????????

It will only work on the Macbook Air.
This is because the usb drive on the air puts out more power then the standard macbook/pros which is not enough to power the drive.
I do think that OWC does sell an external superdrive though, unfortunately their page is not responding for me right now though so I cannot check.

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • Hello everyone i have macbook air, hello everyone i have macbook air and my startup disc is full i checked everything and and find out that all space is of OTHER and i dont know what is it and what i have to do with that

hello everyone i have macbook air, hello everyone i have macbook air and my startup disc is full i checked everything and and find out that all space is of OTHER and i dont know what is it and what i have to do with that

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

My MBA fans start running when I play video too - the CPU's video processor is working pretty hard to decode the video. The fans job is to provide better airflow.  The time to worry is when you play video and the fans don't run.

  • Macbook Air 2013 USB problems (won't connect/ reconnecting)

I have a new Macbook Air 13-inch Mid 2013 with all the upgrades possible (1.7 Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD). I am running Mac OS X 10.8.5. Every software is at the latest version.
I am having troubles connecting a couple of USB 2.0 devices to the Macbook. The first one is my phone. It's a HTC One and when I plug it in dmesg gives this output:

The Identifier message keeps repeating every couple of seconds until I plug the phone out. It also won't show in System Report -> USB.
The second device is a Kinect for Windows (Model 1517). Here it is almost the same. dmesg gives me the following output:
USB (XHCI Root Hub USB 2.0 Simulation):Port 1 on bus 0xa connected or disconnected: portSC(0xe0206e1)

These three lines keep repeating every couple of seconds until I plug it out again. But here I get something in System Report -> USB:

This is still a little strange because there are supposed to be 3 devices (the motor is missing).
So, I haven't yet had the chance to test on other computers but I will try to get my hand on one this weekend. And I will buy an external powered USB-hub to see if it is a power issue, which I doubt because the phone doesn't need that much and the Kinect comes with an external power supply.
Any idea how I can use my hardware? Is there anything more I have to look for? Known bugs? Do you need more information? ANY help is highly appreciated!
    Thank you!

For me the issues are resolved but I guess it won't help you much. Sry.
The HTC One could not properly connect because the USB cable was broken somehow. I bought a new one and it worked ever after. It's crazy because I tried 3 cables before (which I had successfully used with other devices), but they were all very cheap, from the same manufacturer and bought at the same time. Must have been a bad batch or something.
The Kinect was a different story. Here the problem was that the firmware was not compatible with the driver on the MAC. I did some research and since I can't make my own drivers I got myself another Kinect with an older firmware and that resolved this issue.
    Good luck.

  • Burn to DVD from MacBook Air to USB Superdrive

Hi. I am not totally computer illiterate but i really need some help. I have two long videos of a show that Im in in Londons West End. Several of the lads have asked for a copy and I didnt think that would be a problem. Ha!
The clips are one of an hour and the second of 40 minutes. I use a MacBook Air and I purchased a USB superdrive to do the job. Followed the instructions to the letter, but the clips wouldnt burn as in total thay came to just under 10GB! Im struggling to understand how to get round this. For instance, if I buy a movie on DVD, i can get a whole movie of more than the length Im trying to do on one disc.
Is there something I either can do or need to do?
    Jon

You need to burn a video DVD using iDVD:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

I'm installing a printer on a MacBook Air using an external DVD drive via USB.  The computer is asking for my password to authorize changes to the system.  I don't htink I ever put one on the computer and "admin" and "password" don't work.  Is there a default password?  Or a way to change a password that has been forgotten, wothout resetting the computer and wiping everything out?  Thanks.

  • Macbook air 2012 usb issues

I am having having trouble getting the Macbook to detect my Microsoft keyboard (connected using a PS2 to USB cable). Some of the issues I see are
    1. Keyboard does not work when plugged into the left or the right USB connector, when computer is running. USB mouse seems to be fine.
    2. Macbook hangs (at grey screen on startup) when keyboard is plugged into the left USB connector and computer is rebooted.
    3. Keyboard works fine if notebook is restarted with USB plugged onto the right side. However it will not work again if I unplug it and plug it back again.
    4. I tried connecting a Nikon camera at home, and that is not detected either.
Can someone suggest any possible fixes for these problems?

  • Macbook Air 2011 USB Problem

Hi, I recently bought a Toshiba portable hard drive that uses usb 3.0. For some reason, my mid-2011 macbook air 13" is unable to connect to the drive with the USB3 to microUSB3 cable. However, the hard drive worked on a late 2010 macbook air 11", other macbooks and pcs using the usb3 cable. The Toshiba portable hard drive did work with my 2011 air with my friend's USB2 to microUSB2 cable so I decided to buy one on Amazon. Unfortunately, the cable that I bought from amazon did not work with my macbook air but it did work with my other pc.
My question is: Does my macbook air have a usb problem and should I go to apple store to get it fixed?
    Thanks!

There have been more than a few threads on this subject of the USB 3.0 Toshiba Canvio problems. Here is an ongoing rather current discussion of the issue.

iPhoto has decided that it needs to be re-loaded onto my MBA.
