Macbook Air: Suitable 4 an occasional Illustrator, Flash & Photoshop user?

Hi,
I'm in love with MBA. Having said so, I've been digging and found some performance issues around it.
I'm taking evening clases on Flash and Illustrator while sometimes do some light photo retouching with Photoshop. Blogging and browsing are, in addition to some occasional iTunes encoding, my main activities. I'm concerned about the lack of expansion possibilities... Maybe CS3 runs finebut what would happen in a near future? I'd worked and upgraded the creative suite in my Toshiba since '06, without a problem, wouldn't like to waste my bucks in a beautiful piece which would grow old pretty fast.
I'm Spanish but resident in Sweden so I travel twice a year for more than 2 weeks bak home. As a result, a feather computer would suit my aesthetic and personal needs.
Anyone doing something like that? Would love to hear your advice...

The current version of the MBA will suit you well for what you want to do -- I am running CS4 on it, and all of the software runs just fine - similar to a macbook. I see no speed differences with either Illustrator nor Photoshop. InDesign CS4 actually runs FASTER on the MBA than the older version of InDesign.
It sounds like it will do what you want. As to expansion capabilities, that is true -- there are no expansion capabilities other than what you get out of the box. But to be truly happy with the MBA, make sure you get the external superdrive as well so that you can install, burn, copy, etc. You will not be happy with the ridiculous "remote disc" over wireless...spare yourself the grief and get the superdrive as well. If you travel, you will also want to get the optional USB ethernet dongle for when you don't have wireless in hotels and and need to connect with wired ethernet. Also, if you travel, be sure to get a USB expander -- the new Belkin swivel-hub works well -- it's thin and fits in the usb opening -- you will need that if you go to an internet cafe for example and need a separate usb connection for both wireless and a printer (like at Kinkos).

Will Macbook Air (2012) with 256G storage flash have storage problem described in "MacBook Air Flash Storage Drive Replacement Program"?
In the web page http://www.apple.com/support/macbookair-flashdrive/, it says that Apple has determined that certain 64GB and 128GB flash storage drives used in the previous generation of MacBook Air systems may fail. I wonder whether Macbook Air with 256GB flash storage may come into the same problem?

No. 256 GB flash storage does not have that problem. However, it's important that you make backups of your data to keep your files safe

The macbook air does not have a CD player so I cannot put the Photoshop CD in to install. I wanted to know if it was possible to download photoshop from the website with the serial number of my product.

If you purchased the CD you will not have a download link in your account, but there are downloads available for most modern versions of Photoshop. You can use your serial number from the disc to activate after installing the download.

Is MacBook Air Suitable for my iTunes files

This is my first post here, so I apologize if this is the wrong forum.
I have decided to buy a MacBook, and I am leaning heavily towards the MacBook Air. However, the "256GB Flash Storage" makes me wonder if it is the best choice. I have several gigs worth of iTunes files (music, video, etc.); I believe it is between 40 and 50 GB. Is the MacBook Air sutiable for this, or should I go with the MacBook Pro?
I'm not a gamer, and I have a work laptop to do all of my powerful MS Office stuff. We just surf the internet, manage our iTunes, and mess with photos.

I agree. I purchases 13 " with 128 GB storage. I use mine for pretty much same thing; also have an iMac for cpu intensive tasks. I find 128 GB to be enough storage. I am happy with my purchase.

best news I have heard all day! I agree the limited SSD space makes it "impractical" now but in a few short months, i am sure lacie and others will external hd's available. Can you imagine a time when EVERYTHING is SSD and thunderbolt (or better)? Life will be nothing but rainbows and butterflies!

My MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013) Flash Drive replaced twice in one week?

My MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013) crashed a week ago, and Apple repair replaced SSD. Last night, it crashed again. I'm taking it in to have the SSD replaced again! I saw Apple's Flash Drive Replacement Program for the earlier MBA's, so why haven't they fixed this problem?

Is Macbook air 13" good enough for adobe photoshop cs5

i want a portable laptop but i don't know if the macbook air 13" can handle CS5 properly for editing my photos?

It will run, but there is a glitch with the Intel HD 3000 graphics card and PS CS5 at the moment. Resizing brushes in Photoshop can be irritating. There is a thread about it here:

It is a problem with the video card drivers in Mac OS X, and something that Apple must fix. It's not a deal-breaker, but it is annoying.
Aside from this minor annoyance, PS CS5 should run okay. Keep in mind that the fancy 3D features of CS5 Extended (if you get that version) may not work as fast or as well as they might on a machine with discrete graphics instead of dedicated. I run PS on a 13" MacBook Pro and it works just fine in my experience.

From what you describe it's certainly a Hard Drive failure so you'll definetely need to contact HP. Personally, considering this is the 2nd HDD in under 2 months, I say it's either bad luck ( however unlikely ) or there is another issue at play - it may be worth suggesting this to HP when you contact them.

I was wondering if you could please tell me if a MacBook Air would be suited to carry up to university and work with me each day? Is it fragile because it's really thin? I want something lightweight that I can stick in my laptop case and walk around with to and from lectures, but at the same time I want something durable. The laptop would have to be able to cope with being in the same case as some of my textbooks.
All thoughts, opinions and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Not only is it appropriate for you, it is extremely popular here at the University of Michigan. The machine is sturdy and you won't have a problem. Invest in a 29 buck Incase sleeve for it, throw it in your messenger, and off you go.
I have the 128 GB SSD version, and I was completely able to get rid of my desktop Mac completely -- it not only holds all my software, photos, documents, 35 GB of music, and movies, it still has 20 GB to spare.
Just one caveat -- be sure you don't have a backpack that screams "laptop inside" because I'll go out on a limb to say that the MBA is probably the most popular "steal me" laptop out there on college campuses as well.

I've recently purchased a MacBook Air. I had originally downloaded Photoshop to my old MacBook Pro and I dragged the app over to my new MacBook Air. It won't open though, due to "error 6." They suggest uninstalling it and reinstalling it,

When I attempt to uninstall it, I get this message: The alias “Uninstall Adobe Photoshop CS5.1” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.

As it suggest this is just the alias not the actual file.
It might be a case where the file was not properly copied i would advice you to download the file again and then try to install it and drag and drop the alias to trash.

Nun ja ich meinte die neuste Version von CS6 aber inzwischen habe ich mir
mal die Testversion von CC runtergeladen um zu schauen ob da dieser Fehler auch vorhanden ist
und Ja auch dort ist es genau so wie in CS6. Wie es ausschaut scheint Photoshop bzw.
die Adobe Programme noch nicht wirklich auf Retina zu laufen. Schade eigentlich.

Check out that link, although it does discuss the older generation MBA (discussion made in 2008), most developers say it was fine although you should get the most RAM which you will it seems. Although in all honesty I would think the 13.3" screen would be a lot better since it is easier to work with a larger screen.
Personally I have a 15" MBP, I only ever use only a portion when dealing with XCode, so I think a 13" would be best. 11" is pushing it a bit. But its your choice.

Can Macbook Air 11 Inch Handle Photoshop CS5?

Basically I want to get the 11 inch macbook air as I am a student and will be hauling around this laptop to class and whatnot. And I do a lot of walking so the light weight is good! But i was wondering if the 11'inch screen and the macbook air is suitable to run adobe photoshop cs5? I only plan on installing that and microsoft office. Can macbook air handle that?
I use photoshop mainly for web design. Also will the screen size give headaches? Thanks so much for all responses in advance!

From a power standpoint, it will handle it just fine. The greatest issue is the physical screen size and the "ergonomics" of such with the user. My 11" has been relegated to be a seldom used secondary computer, because of screen size alone.
I doubt it will give you headaches, unless you are prone to it. My 48 year old eys barely make it with the 11". It just isn't comfortable for long periods....for me. All users are going to be different. But I think both the screen resolution of the 13", and the larger size make it much more appropriate for PS work, if you must use a small portable machine.
I don't find the 13" Air to be a size/weight burden at all, as compared with the 11".
