From previous discussions I've noted this message means I have to replace my hard disk. Can I back up my data to my iMac in single user mode before taking the Macbook Air to the service centre?

I am using a late 2010 MacBook Air now updated to OSX Mountain Lion (10.8.2. Version). It works great but since I have updated it to OSX Mountain Lion I am having the following problem:
1.- I work as usual with my MBA and when my work is finished I shut it down normally, closing first all the opened apps (the shut down from the Apple menu located at the top left corner of the screen).
2.- When I turn on my MBA again (form example at the next day or a few hours later and I introduce my password) a lot of letters and words appear in my screen (over a black canvas) and then a message saying "Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Press any key to restart it or wait a few seconds" (something like that). Then appears a report and the MBA says that it will be sent automatically to apple. It happens everyday.
3.- So, I have to wait some seconds and this cause that the starting time of my MBA had increased too much, even I have to introduce my password again for restarting my MBA.
Can anybody knows the solution to this concern and provide me advice or help? thank you very much in advance !!

Macbook Air 13" - How to switch off internal monitor?

While working with an external monitor (e.g. TV), I would like to switch off the internal monitor. Is there any function which helps me?

this thread talks about running several monitors as advertised by apple and running demanding task on them.
with the lid open, the keyboard offers a very efficiant heat escape vector, which is blocked when the lid is closed - this is a basic and commonsense insulation effect. this thread also mentions the use of temperature monitoring software and thus a repeatable test setup. the temps recorded were also mentioned. they rose when the lid was closed, the running task remaining unchanged. as far as i could track down the cpus in discussion will shut down around the 105 degree celsius range. i observed system shut downs when the system approached 103° celsius. not to mention that the fans will run loud well before that.
again this is on hardware checked and ok-ed by apple service.
the question still welcoming an expert answer: is there any way to switch off the built-in macbook monitor while the lid is open ?

Messages no longer working on Macbook Air

since the latest software update on my Macbook Air my messages no longer functions. No incoming messages even when they are there on my iPhone. Jabber showed up and i disabled that and ensured imessage account was enabled.

Can't connect to Messages on my MacBook Air

I am suddenly getting the following message on my MacBook Air. Messages works on iMac, my iphone 4s and my iPad 2.
"Your Apple ID ___________ cant be used to set up Messages at this time. If this is a new Apple ID, you do not need to create another one. To use this Apple ID with iMessage, contact iMessage support with the code below."
I attempted to call Apple, but they wanted me to pay for this privilege.
I tried to remove Messages via the - sign, but it was greyed out. Was thinking that deleting and reinstalling may help.
Any suggestions?

A firmware password has been set. It's not the same as your login password. If you don't know the password, you will have to take the machine to an Apple Store to have the password removed.

That error code indicates a hard drive failure. It's a common problem on early Macbook Air models. Get your hard drive checked just in case but most likely you'll need a new one.

Target mode for Macbook Air? Data recovery effort underway

Hello,
I took my daughters' Macbook Air into the Apple Store for the hinge replacement, they shipped it off for repair, and some idiot at the Apple repair Depot did a clean OS X install for absolutely NO reason.
I want to access the hard drive as an external drive and run Data Rescue on it to try to recover some of her files.
Any ideas?

AFAIK, there is no USB target disk mode. Only available on Firewire equipped Macs. Sorry, not the answer you wanted to hear, but the unfortunate reality is that what you've experienced is the reason why "everyone is always told" to backup, backup, and backup.
If you still want to try doing a low level recovery, you'll have to remove the hard drive and attach it with some adapter to another computer.
Going forward, you'll want to purchase an external hard drive for Time Machine backups. (Or purchase a Time Capsule or configure another Leopard or Snow Leopard Mac as a Time Machine destination.) I have a separate Mac as a Time Machine destination so Time Machine backs up automatically whenever I'm using my home Wi-Fi, which means backups are a no-brainer and has saved me several times in cases similar to what you've gone through. Every decent repair shop I've dealt with has a liability warning stating they are not responsible for data loss. So although it shouldn't have been necessary, sh...stuff happens.

Yes, pretty much, thank you. I used to have a MacBook bought in the States which was reading NTSC DVDs and I had an external DVD player to watch the PAL DVDs as I now live in UK. By now purchasing a MacBook Air which doesn't have an internal DVD player I thought I could just easily have 2 external DVD players to watch either DVDs regions. But that isn't that easy.. Well looks like the best option is to buy a region-free DVD player. Is that hard to find? Thank you for your help and time.

4HDD/11/40000004: SATA (0,0) - Apple Extended Hardware Test

Hi!
My mid-2009 13-inch Macbook Pro's performance deteriorated last month. It become super super slow.
So, out of curiosity, I performed an Apple Extended Hardware Test. And here is the error code: 4HDD/11/40000004: SATA (0,0)
I didn't expect that problem to arise so I don't have any back-up of my essential files. I tried to copy my files to an external drive but copying a 600MB folder required me to wait for more than 30 min before receiving the error code which said somthing like "files cannot be copied"
Then, I bought a new 60GB Kingston SSDnow V+ and 4GB Trascend 1066Mhz RAM. I successfully installed Snow Leopard on my new SSD and installed the new 4GB memory. Things went well. I even booted my mac so fast using my new SSD via USB enclosure.
But the problem came when I installed my new drive internally. Flashing question mark appears when starting my Mac. Internal drive is also not recognized by Disk utility when booting my Mac from OS X Installation Disk. Installed my old drive and no success.
I don't know if the problem is the compatibility of my SSD or the SATA cable. For now, I'm booting my Mac on my new SSD via a USB External Enclosure. My old drive is installed internally but it is not recognized. And I find it too inconvenient to use my Mac booting externally (even though the performance is ultra fast) since I'm a college student.
My problems:
a. What to do so that my SSD will be recognized when connected on my Mac internally via SATA?
b. What to do so that I can have a back-up of my very essential files saved on my old drive? (I remember booting from my old drive connected via USB Enclosure took me more than 1 hour, then logging in to enter my password took me to watch that spinning rainbow wheel forever)
P.S. Sorry if you find grammatically incorrect sentences.
I also leave here in the Philippines. And there is no Apple Store here. Apple Authorized Service Centers don't sell the SATA cable. Purchasing the cable via internet is not feasible due to the following reasons: a. My location. b. I'm still a student and I don't have a credit card to pay an online purchase.
Your generous help will be much appreciated.

You need to use DW from either an external boot disk or the DW CD since repairs cannot be made on a volume that you are booted up from.

After installing Mavericks (from Mountain Lion) on my iMac 20" mid 2007 I cannot read musical cd on the internal drive neither on external. No problems at all with my macbook air.

When I put a musical CD into the reader (no matter if it is the internal Matshita or an external drive) the system write a message like :" this computer cannot read the disk" (in italian "il disco inserito non è leggibile da questo computer").
I have also a macbook air : no problem at all with the same CD and the same external reader.

Followup: on a business trip. Booked ahead for Genius Bar appointment. Fixed in half an hour. His hardware test found nothing wrong with the MacBook. He flashed Mountain Lion onto the laptop with no hiccups. Right there in the store the MB connected to iCloud and I had all my personal information back. Back in the hotel room it only took me 3 hours to fully reinstall all my purchased software over the hotel's wired LAN from the App Store and third party sites, without needing a single DVD like in the bad old days. Even re-installing MS Office was painless. I just searched with Google, then the MS page I clicked on served up a form with my information on it automatically and sent me an email with the product key when I clicked download. Obviously their server recognized this device. I cloned the MB to a small PassPort backup portable external hard drive and then used the MacBook normally in meetings next day. Very impressive service. We've come a long way from portable computing two decades ago.
Still a mystery why the installation would not complete at home, but problem resolved.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
