MacBook Air + Thunderbolt-Firewire Adapter + LaCie FW800 Drive = Freeze

I recently bought a new MacBook Air 13" including the TB-to-FW800 adapter from Apple. I own an older external LaCie FireWire 800 drive I want to use with.
From time to time (i.e. not always) when I connect the LaCie drive to the MacBook Air, OS X 10.8.2 freezes completely so that I have to hard reset it. Seems that someone here has a similar problem:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1419956
Is there any solution available?
Thanks!

The only time my system freezes is if I try to boot with the thunderbolt/firewire drive connected.
I have had no problem connecting the drive after boot has been completed.
Which reminds me I need to retest now that I am at 10.8.2.

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?

Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?
In other words, because the MacBook Air only has 120 gbs of hard drive space & my old hard drive, from a Lenovo, has 500 gbs of hard drive space (and I have over 120 gbs of music), I’m looking to manage my iTunes music from the external hard drive permanently. Upon attempting to access the iTunes library held on the external hard drive the following message comes up: “The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file”.  Is there a way to get around this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.

"...selected the new tracks directly in iTunes, Control-clicked on the selection, and saw that now you can consolidate selected items." - http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090919000326840
Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.

  • 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro has frozen after Yosemite installation. I can, however, boot from a clone of my MacBook Air that is on an external drive. Despite the fact that I can boot from the external, could it be the RAM that's the prob

My daughter's 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro has frozen (null sign displays) after Yosemite installation. I can, however, boot from a clone of my MacBook Air that is on an external drive. I reinstalled Yosemite on the MBP HD, but it still hangs in mid install. Despite the fact that I can boot from the external, could it be the RAM that's the problem? I'd happily put 8 GB in if it seems probable that would solve the problem. I've tried all the suggested procedures that I've seen posted here. Disk Utility, and my older version of DiskWarrior indicate the HD is OK. I have DiskWarrior 5 on order.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION key down.  If successful, you should see two HDD icons,  Select the recovery partition (on the right).
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter not good for networking?!

    Hi folks,
I have been successfully running a mini Firewire network between my old iMac and my MacPro for several years just using a FW 800 to FW 400 cable.
NOW I bought the new iMac with Thunderbolt and the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. Unfortunalely it was impossible for me to set up the network again. Is it right that the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter will not work the same as the "pure" Firewire connection before, because of the different hardware or internal protocols? Do I really have to switch over to a standard ethernet connection with additional hardware like router hub or switch and forget my cool and so easy Firewire network?
I read about that problem here:
    macworld.com/article/2016066/migration-assistant-thunderbolt-firewire-adapter-hu h.html
    That would be a shame....

Be certain you have inserted the cable plug into the computer jack so that essentially ALL of the metal end has disappeared inside the computer jack.

  • I want to reinstall os X yosemite on my macbook Air but i erased the hard drive and i cant get the local recovery option; only internet recovery; is there any way to go back and get local recovery option?

i want to reinstall os X yosemite on my macbook Air but i erased the hard drive and i cant get the local recovery option; only internet recovery; is there any way to go back and get local recovery option?

    Hi Bockworld1,
I'm afraid you did an error when erasing your hard-drive, this has automatically erased the "local recovery". In order to pass-by this, you must use a former Mac OS X installation DVD (such as Snow Leopard 10.6.3) and then when updated to 10.6.8 you may access the Mac App Store to recover the Yosemite Installer and proceed to a fresh "update" OR creating a Bootable USB Installation drive with DiskMaker in order to alway get a installation copy.
I also suggest you to create a USB Basic Operating System (you must select a local USB device to install Yosemite or whatever OS you want) with only the base operating system to launch your computer in case of Main Operating System issues.
Given the amounts of issues reported by users with 10.10.2, I command you to download 10.10.2 version to get a stable OS working.
Let me know how it is going.
    Good Luck.

  • Charging Macbook with Macbook Air's power adapter

I have noticed that the power connector on the late 2008 aluminum Macbook accepts the Macbook Air's power adapter's plug. The Macbook Air's power connector also accepts the aluminum Macbook's power adapter's connector. So, can these power adapters be used interchangeably? The output power specifications are a little different. The Macbook Air's power adapter supplies voltage that is a bit lower than the aluminum Macbook's.
The reason I am asking is that if my wife and I both travel with our laptops (she has Macbook Air and I have the new Macbook), it would be nice to be able to bring only one power adapter and use it with both laptops. I have also noticed that the airplane power adapter shipping with the aluminum Macbook (late 2008) is the same one that I bought for my wife's Macbook Air. However, according to Apple, the airline power adapter does not charge the battery, but only powers the laptop.

It is safe to use your macbook power adapter on the macbook air, but not the otherway around. The macbook air power adapter won't supply enough power to the macbook and probably will overheat and eventually burn out (if not worse).

  • MacBook Air Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter and daisy-chaining external FW drives

Here is my problem—I have a MacBook Air 13" running Mavericks to which I want to attach external FW drive(s). This is easily achievable by using the Thunderbolt-to-FW 800 adapter. And the adapter works great until I try to daisy-chain two external drives. If I attach a second drive to the first one, it immediately unmounts the first drive and I get the 'improperly disconnected drive' warning.
I seem to recall that this was doable in Mountain Lion (about 85% sure). So is this a software or hardware problem? And, to go even deeper into the weeds, my two external FW drives are self-powered (no external power supply). So if I got wall warts for these drives, would it work? Or am I remembering this incorrectly and the adapter never supported daisy-chaining?
The external drives are a pair of G-Tech G-Drive minis, but one is a year to 18-months older than the other one, which means it probably has an older FireWire chipset, but on the other hand, they do mount successfully as self-powered FW 800 drives from a native FW 800 port, or even from a daisy-chain originating from a FW 800 port. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have 4 FW devices chained together and use the TB->FW dongle. They all have power bricks. I have several bus powered devices. Some are quirky, some just don't function, two work reliably. There's no question it is all about how much power they need and TB doesn’t supply enough. Bottom line for me: my bus powered FW drives are soley relegated to use with my last FW equipped computer and when it does they will too.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 10.8.2 Frozen after returning to sleep and attaching thunderbolt firewire adapter

Hi to all, i'm writing because probably there's a bug on the latest osx 10.8.2 so, could you check that what happens to me is equal to you too?
I've a Macbook Pro Retina from about 2 weeks and in the last 3 days i've seen 2 freeze of the system, i couldn't make anything, only force power off with the power button. After some tests i've noted and isolated the issue, so this is what happens:
    - remove the thunderbolt to firewire adapter (if attached)
    - wait until mac goes to sleep
    - go out of sleep
    - attach the adapter and...
    - system frozen
how i've told the only way to restore is force the mac to power off.
I'll wait your answer and solutions (if there are)
    Thank you
This is the consolle where you can see the issue:
and this is when all works fine:

I'm having this exact behaviour on my 13" Retina MacBook Pro running 10.8.2 when inserting a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter. System freezes hard, have to hold down power button to reset.

  • MacBook Air No Longer Sees Remote External Drive

I have an iMac with a FW800 connected external hard drive. I use it for Time Machine backups. Also use an Airport Extreme for wireless connection. My MacBook Air at one time was able to "see" that external drive via the Airport and I used it to backup the laptop with Time Machine. Now, all of a sudden, the MBA no longer sees the external drive. What has happened? I use the MBA only occasionally, and told Time Machine to backup only when I tell it to. So, LOTS probably has changed since the last backup. But, what change has broken this connection? My iMac sees it just fine and does Time Machine backups just fine. When I want to share the DVD drive of the iMac, that works as it should. I just can't see that dang external drive any longer. Both machines are at 10.5.6
Can you folks give me some places to start looking to get things working again?

Does the time machine volume meet the requirements?
-internal drive, not start up disk
    -XSAN volume
    -USB drive
    -fire wire drive
    -eSATA drive
-network server via AFP (from machines running Leopard), including machines running file sharing
the volume must be formated as Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (case-sensitive)
    You can't use:
    -Boot Camp partition
    -iPod
    -disk image
    -AirPort Disk
    -iDisk

  • External monitor will not sleep using 2012 MacBook Air and HDMI adapter

I am running a HP 27xi (27" display) using the apple thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, and using a HDMI cable.
    ISSUE:
I run my 2012 macbook air in "clamshell mode", and solely use the 27" display, which works great. Problem, is when the macbook goes to put the display to sleep, or sleep for the laptop, the display starts to go into power save mode, then flips back on... goes back into power save mode, repeats forever. I called HP, and they said the HDMI signal is not being turned off, hence why the screen keeps going ON, then power save, then repeat. If I shutdown the laptop, then the monitor goes off just fine.
Anyone else ran into an issue with an external monitor NOT going to sleep when plugged into the HDMI adapter? Someone suggusted that I purchase a DVI-D adapter, and use that cable... but that sounds ridiculous. The HDMI adapter should absolutely work.
My temporary fix is to turn off the monitor everytime (if i remember) otherwise the display is in this never ending loop of trying to shut down.
And yes, the Macbook Air is 100% up to date with updates. DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!
    Joe

    Hello Joe,
I definitely understand your concern regarding your external display not going to sleep and endlessly looping into power save mode when your MacBook Air is asleep.
I found an article with steps to troubleshoot issues with displays.  This article is for internal and external displays, so you can skip any steps referring to the internal display.  The following steps specifically stands out to me for the situation you are experiencing:
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.

  • Macbook Air thunderbolt ethernet not working after 10.8.3 update

    Hi,
Thunderbolt Ethernet for my Macbook Air (11-inch, Mid 2012) stopped working after installing 10.8.3 update.  I am unable to conect to my router via thunderbolt Ethernet connection port.
Anyone else having the same issue? Any recommendations?

Unplug your thunderbolt adapter.  Restart the router.
Go to your Mac and go to System Preferences >> Network
Use the - button in the lower left corner to delete your Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.
Now plug your thunderbolt adapter back in and use the + button to add "Ethernet Thunderbolt" to your list of connections.  Move it back up in the order of network preference you want.
Your network access should now be reset.
