MacBook Air update breaks Safari

I just updated my MacBook Air this evening, and now Safari refuses to work. I've repaired permissions, dumped the preferences for Safari, tried restoring from Time Machine, restarted several times, and still Safari hangs up on opening and refuses to start. Firefox works, but not Safari. Anyone else having issues with this? Suggestions?

Karen,
Unfortunately... this is where it gets a little tricky. The fact that Safari works without an issue in another user would indicate that the problem was not with the update (itself) or the application. But rather something that was modified via the update which affects the Safari application. A plug-in, a toolbar, something along those lines.
I'm not a "wiz" when it comes to Safari troubleshooting of this nature but the first place to start would be with the application itself. If you go to the Safari.app in Finder and "Show Package Contents" it should be bring you into a new view that shows one folder (contents). Within that folder I have the following items: (this is off a clean installed, test OS environment)
- CodeResources
- Info.plist
- MacOS (folder)
- PkgInfo
- Resources (folder)
- SafairSyncClient
- version.plist
One thing you might also want to try would be to delete the following folders in your User/Library
- Safari (entire folder)
- Preferences (content of folder, leave folder)
- Caches (content of folder, leave folder)
- Internet Plug-Ins (content of folder, leave folder)
It's also possible that there's something with QuickTime that might be affecting Safari. It seems like a stretch, but the next step might be to remove and re-install all associations of that Application as well.
Make sure whenever removing an application you also remove its receipt so Software Updater is "up to date" on what's installed or not installed. That folder is located off the root level Library, not the User level.
Ultimately an Archive & Install might be the best solution, however the fact that the application works in another user would typically indicate that an Archive & Install would not resolve the issue but rather bring it right back. With that being said, an Archive & Install (without preserving user and settings) would then do the trick. But it would involve reimporting your entire user directory, which may take a while.

I have a Mac Air and suddenly Safari can't find the Facebook server. I am out of my home countryt but no problem with my iPhone's Safari. Any recommendations? I would like to put some pictures on Facebook from iPhoto. Thanks.

you cannot keep up with all of the interfaces 'cause they do not even allow you to use the older os.
You should be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion via the App Store applicaiton on your Macbook Air.   You do not have to upgrade, but it should be an option.
I can't even get an ichat acct 'cause, help?
iChat can use AOL Instant Messenger accounts (they are free), iChat can use Google Talk (Jabber) accounts (actually any Jabber based chat service).   And if you upgrade to Mountain Lion, you shoul be able to get an Apple iCloud account that can be used with the Messages replacement for iChat (think of Messages as being iChat renamed, with additional features).
Oh and my battery very close to a year after buying it, which is one of the reasons I was so called to it, the battery life.  Well, having it stripped down to minimal usage, while working on nothing crazy, I could be cordless from nevver reahing 100% anymore, just under that, but gets to 20 percent in about 3 hours. No audio, no video, light low, it bothers me anyway.  Please, this is also a huge problem.
Every battery today, has a limited number of recharges (not just Apple's).   Depending on how many times it has been recharged, will affect how much power it will eventually hold. <http://www.apple.com/batteries/>
I know that generally after about 2 years of use (my use, not yours) I find that my batteries have very little life left in them (I frequently have my devices plugged in, so running fully on batteries only is most likely less than yours).
You can have your battery replaced by Apple (for a fee) or by an authorized Apple repair facility.

  • Macbook air updates taking too long

I just bought my macbook air.  It needs 13 program updates.  I started to do them all at once, and it was estimated to take over 900 hours.  I stopped it and started to do them one at a time.  Doing that, I was able to update 6 of them.  One of them is 66KB and is estimated to take 10 hours.  Seems pretty crazy.  Is this normal?

Don't get too anxious about estimated times. The estimator constantly updates as the download progresses. It observes how much data needs to be downloaded, how long it took for the portion already downloaded, and extrapolates from that. It gets more accurate as it goes. The numbers can be pretty wild at first. It's like trying to estimate your MPG after driving 2 blocks.

    Hi lasabeth14,
If you are having Java issues after upgrading to Mavericks, you may want to make sure you have installed the most recent Java update for OS X. You may find the following page helpful:

  • HT1338 Why won't my MacBook Air Update iPhoto and iMovie ?

I bought my macbook Air mid last year and the flash drive was faulty in it and i had to have it replaced and ever since that i cant use imessage as they didnt put the serial number back in and now i cant update some applications on my computer and as iPhoto and iMovie. when i try to update these applications it just says " to update this aplication, sign into the account you used to purchase it" i am on the sane account as what i have always used the only differance is i have changed the email from what it use to be

The download takes a long time. If you have a Ethernet Adaptor use it. Try to locate a high-bandwidth wireless connection. Do you have enough free space on your SSD (including keeping 10-20% empty for VMEM and temporary files)

  • MacBook Air update still running

The latest update of OS X Yosemite could not be finished in 15 minutes. My MacBook Air was running the whole afternoon and still not finished in the evening after 5 hours.
I've switched of the machine and restart it. The logon screen comes and I can give in my logon credentials, but then the system will only be startet until the middle of the status bar.
    What can I do?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • MacBook Air update/redesign 2010

I have been waiting for almost 6 months now for an update to this device so that I can purchase. I have almost purchased other products that I don't really want and that are not as ideal for me as the Air, but I've stuck to being hopeful. Does Apple not want us to purchase their ultra-portable computer? I for one am not going to go buy one of the stale models and then have an updated version released weeks later.. so as with all Apple products I have (and I have a good amount), I buy after a new refresh or spec update, which is usually only a few months apart.. however, it has been a year since the last update to the Air. A year. Somebody please tell me that I'm not the only one that thinks an update is RIDICULOUSLY overdue.

i'm not speculating about anything.. yet, i know had Apple been monitoring this forum they would've probably deleted the thread. The reason I (and a lot of people) like to buy after a fresh update is because I like to keep whatever I buy as long as possible.. I don't buy second-hand computers. I buy second-hand other things, but never second-hand computers. To me, it's not worth it, to you it may be different. But so, for the majority of us who buy new, the more current and powerful the specs, the longer it will last and the OS be upgradable. By doing that I make the best investment possible. I'm not going to invest 1399 (student price - 1499 regular) in something that hasn't been updated in over a YEAR! a spec/maybe hardware update is definitely imminent. Purchasing now would just be plain stupid.. And i never raise a stink about any Apple update. In fact i've always been like you, telling people to shut up and wait, but I've never been in this position where I've been waiting FOR SO LONG to buy, and seen them not updating it.. I mean really, I've waiting over a year without saying anything, so yesterday I decided to post this to see if anyone else felt the same way. I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

  • MacBook Air Safari doesn't work after ML update

After I updated my MacBook Air 2012 to Mountain Lion yesterday, Safari stopped working. It says it's connected but Safari won't open any page.
This is the third time it happens and I'm getting sick of it (SL, Lion OS and now ML)

Also, are you able to ping the network. Go to Terminal and type the following:ping google.com
you should get something like this:

I had similar issues to the ones that seem to be plaguing people in this thread. However, I found a solution that worked for me, and will hopefully help you and some others!
System prefs > Network > Cog/gear button on the bottom left (sorry dont now what it's called) > Set service order.
If you find that the service order puts bluetooth ahead of Wifi, try switching Wifi up to the top spot. It worked for me. Let me know how it goes, hopefully it works!
    Best of luck, Chris
