MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro 13 Inch

I really need help ASAP.

The NEW macbook Pro and Air are EXTREMELY close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now between Air and Pro....are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics and the Pro has HDMI output.....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc. Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or

Instead of Air VS Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse.
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little, the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.

A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD are MUCH FASTER due to SSD density

Should I buy a new Macbook Pro 13 inch or Macbook Air 13 inch?

Hi,
I was wondering if I should buy the new Macbook pro 13 inch, or keep my old 2010 1.4 C2D Macbook Air. I am not satisfied with the tiny 64GB SSD that my current Macbook Air has, because just a few weeks after I had done a clean reinstall of OSX Lion, the whole disk almost filled up. The one thing I do like about the Macbook Air, however is the speed of the SSD. Its really quick, and it boots in under 20 seconds. The Air didn't have many performance issues (other than overheating like crazy after playing a few graphics-intensive games).
If I were to buy a new Mac, my price range would be from $1200-$1500. I plan to use Garageband/iMovie frequently for making Youtube videos/school projects, and store a large music library. I also plan to do some moderate gaming and run Windows 7 in Bootcamp/Parallels. I don't plan to take it around much, but I don't want to have to weigh down my backpack in case I have to. My two options now would be the new Macbook Pro 13 inch or the new Macbook Air 13 inch. Could anyone give me a suggestion of which computer to buy?

I went through this same thing when I purchased my first Mac 3 days ago, also between the 13 inch MBA and MBP. I ended up deicding with the 13inch MBP, here's why:
1. More hard drive space, yes it may not be an SSD but more space is more space. I have also heard about people taking out the disc drive and adding an SSD in its place, so there would be an option.
2. The disc drive, I rarely do use it but just in case it's there and easier than carrying around an external.
3. Upgradability, I plan on keeping this Mac for a while because I spent so much on it. On a MBP I can upgrade the internal parts such as the hard drive and RAM. On a MBA everything is soldered together so what you buy is what you stick with.
4. Ethernet port, this is one that could be gotten around by an adapter but I still took it into consideration. Not everywhere has wifi yet including my work where every computer is hard wired.
5. Bootcamp, as well I plan to run Windows 7 on mine and Windows 7 takes a good amount of space so this is another spot where the larger hard drive of the MBP comes in handy. You could always have an external hard drive and run Windows 7 off of that on an Air but then you would have to have it always plugged in when you wanted to run Windows 7.
About me, I am a student so I had a lot to think about and read a lot of reviews online before I decided on my MBP but I am glad I decided on this over an Air. It may be a few pounds heavier also but in the long run for me I think the Pro will be better, I do plan on adding more RAM in the future as software becomes more memory intensive. With you're pricerange being 1200-1500 the 13inch MBP with the i7 processor may be one to look at. From Apple with their student discount, if you are one, you get $100 of plus a $100 giftcard. At BestBuy (where I got mine) the price of the i7 13inch MBP is 1,424.99 and if you're a student you get $100 off but no giftcard. I got the i5 13inch MBP because I don't need an i7.
In the end it all comes down to what works for you, but I hope I was able to help you some.

I bought it off of an Apple product store on Ebay about 3 and a half months ago. It was 1,350$. It was in perfect condition when I bought it, and it still is. I'm really into producing music, and I use Reason 6.5. I also do some other small things on my laptop, like word-processing, web-browsing and I bring it to school everyday. I was wandering if I should sell this laptop on Ebay, and buy a brand-new Macbook Air, 13-inch, 2013 model. The laptop is a little thick and heavy, and its battery-life is nothing compared to the MacBook Air. I really value battery-life I would probably upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs, and maybe upgrade the processor to 1.7 GHz, maybe upgrade the SSD to 256, but I might not. I was wandering if this would be a good idea. How much would I be able to sell this laptop for on Ebay? Is the MacBook Air weaker or stronger than the laptop I am using now? Screen real estate is something that matters a lot when using a music program, which is why I initially went for this laptop. Now, since the MacBook Air is smaller, I know that it displays just as much as this laptop does, so I don't think that the screen size would be that big of a problem. I am thinking about saving up for a 27-inch iMac, which would then be my primary machine, but if I were able to buy one, it wouldn't be for awhile. Anyways, Thanks to anybody who can help me!

The macbook Air is 'stronger' than the Pro only in terms of containing MUCH fewer parts, far less to fault, easier to repair

Its stronger in alloy form factor, slim design with only ONE moving part, no HD to crash from mechanical failure of impact etc.
Ive got an Imac and current Air, and owned several Air, the air is the hands down choice for myself and I wouldnt part with it for any amount of money. Also own a couple macbook Pro, new and older one i rebuilt.

Only one moving part, ultrafast boot time SSD, the full power of laptop with the weight of an Ipad (close).
Air is the only Mac that has Haswell, 802ac wifi, and incredible 12hr. batt life in 13" I5. HOWEVER NOW the new Pro have 802ac wifi
Recommend buying the Air with 8gig Ram.
Pack around a regular laptop around about 20 days, then an Air, .....after that the standard laptops stays at home.
Only one moving part, the fan. No moving HD heads to crash or moving platters. Runs a LOT cooler than anything else out there (which = durability). Heater is a killer on a scale of 10X over that of accidents.
Also the AIR has far fewer parts to fail inside than a standard laptop. Really only a few replacement parts
The speakers on the Air, contrary to what most people would assume, are much louder than on the macbook Pro.
The Air in general is faster due to the SSD, also if you have a 802ac Router (i.e. Airport Extreme) then the Air over wifi is a LOT faster.
If youre going to be dragging a notebook around campus all the time, the Air makes things a lot more lovely.
The FINAL consideration of course is your application USE, and needs regarding same (see specs and video above)
The new Air, NOW with Mavericks is just 'king of the hill'. Nothing touches it

Which laptop is best suitable for me? Macbook Air 11 inch, Macbook Air 13 inch, or Macbook Pro 13 inch?

I'm an 8th grader who does powerpoints, word documents, web browsing and light gaming, light movie editing on imovie, some ichat and some apps. Should I get a macbook air 11 inch 256gb and 8gb of ram, macbook air 13 inch 128gb and 8gb of ram or macbook pro 13 inch 8gb of ram 500gb hard drive?. Which one is most suitable for me? I need it to last 4-5 years.

Strictly speaking, the size of the screen has nothing to do with a decision to install Windows on any Mac. It should work with the base 13" MBP, even with just 4GB ram.
But it is more complex than to just "install windows"; first, you have to buy a copy of Windows. Any copies you have, even if on DVD, will not work (because the OS contains proprietary code based on the model and manufacturer of your Windows laptop.) Then you have to decide if you want a dual boot (meaning setting up another partition on the HD that holds only the Windows OS and files), or purchase Parallels, which you install as Apple software, then install windows "into" Parallels. If you use dual boot, you can only switch from one OS to the other by way of shutting down and re-booting. If you use Parallels, you can jump from one OS to the other just like switching to different programs in the Mac OS. Parallels runs under $40 these days, and MS Windows 7 Home Premium is ~$165 (both on Amazon).
There are often business or academic reasons to have Win7 on a Mac, but each person should seriously consider whether buying a Mac so that you can install Windows is a sound decision. I mean, why bother with the Mac? I first thought I would have to install Windows on my Mac, but found Mac versions of my critical programs, and learned how to use the many programs the Mac OS already provides to get the same, and often improved functionality over what I had with Windows.
I know you will have a tough decision to make about this. And you are spending a great deal of money for an 8th grader (and for a lot of other people too). It's important to weigh all the factors, decide on your choice, and then make the purchase without having any doubts about your decision. Have confidence in your purchase, and move forward from there.
One final note; I bought my first Mac machine only about 9 months ago. I've bought two more since then. And for each one, I bought the AppleCare warranty and have never regretted it. I won't know if I need it for repairs in a year or two, but just having an ability to call Apple at nearly any time, and have programs, functionality and OS behavior explained to me gives me real peace of mind. I may have to call AppleCare more than once to get a good answer, but in the end, the service has always come through for me. I suggest you consider this strongly.

Macbook Pro 13 inch or Macbook Air 13 inch?

Hi everyone, I have some doubts bugging me lately. Currently, I am having the Macbook White Unibody (2009 model) 2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo. I am going abroad for my studies soon. And it will talk me around 20-30 minutes for every trip, to or from my school accommodation and my campus. So I am thinking to upgrade to Macbook Pro, been saving for that. But the problem now is should I get the Macbook Pro 13 inch base model or Macbook Air 13 inch base model? My main use is listening to music, surfing the web, video chat with family and many paperworks to do (in pharmacy course). Portability is the main key as I have to travel a lot. So can I have some advice whether to go with MBP or MBA which can last me for another 3 years like the White I am having right now? Thank you so much for your help. I really do appreciate. The 13" MacBook Pro isn't difficult to carry around. However, if you pick up the 13" Air, you'd be surprised how heavy the MacBook Pro seems in comparison. Keep in mind that you get a higher resolution display on the 13" Air as well (1440x900 on the Air vs. 1280x800 on the MacBook Pro). The two biggest downsides for the Air are the lack of an optical drive (this is becoming less and less of an issue for many... an external is always an options for those few times one may be needed) and the relatively low capacity of the SSD. I can happily manage with 128GB, so it's not an issue for me. If you have lots of media files or work on a number of projects that have large storage requirements, the SSD capacity may be limiting. An external HDD is always an option as well. I guess the issue is that you can basically get the svelte build of the Air and all the functionality of the Pro if you get an external optical and hard drive. Chances are, if you get an Air for it's portability, you're not going to want to carry around those extras. So it becomes a matter of how often do you think you'll need the external optical / hdd? If you don't think you'll ever need an external optical drive (or only on rare occasions), then you can probably get away with never carrying it around with you. The same goes for the external hard drive (if you should need one).

2012 Macbook pro 13 inch or the Macbook air 13inch?

I need to pick between the 2012 macbook air 13 inch and the 2012 macbook pro 13 inch. I am a college student. Any ideas?

I too had that decision to make when I bought my MBP 13 a month ago.
I liked the MB Air because of the portablity and the fact that it had a better screen resolution.
My deciding factor however, was the fact that the MB Air is not user upgradeable and I like the idea of having an optical drive just in case i need it.
If not having an optical drive is an issue to you, then the MB Air is perfect.
Keep in mind however, that if you decide to go with the MB Air, get the maximum RAM you can since you can not upgrade it in the future. Remember, as programs get upgraded, they become more memory hogs.

Hello, I recently bought a Retna Macbook Pro 15 inch. It has a great display and plenty of power. I want to use this mainly for photography and as my only computer, not as a travel laptop etc. The question is would you rather use the 15 inch MBP or a 13 inch 2013 air and use a Thunderbolt 27 inch display for my office at home. Probably would be slightly more money for the second option but not that much more. Probably less power in the air but I'm thinking it's enough for what I want to use it for. How does the 27 inch display compare in quality to the RMBP? I know the new airs have newer Haswell chips but I don't think the Retna's are that far behind except for battery life.

I had this problem with y Macbook Air and an Asus LED monitor 21.5". The very first time I tried the two together, it worked perfectly. The second time it didn't work and I tried different things to make that "No HDMI signal" go away.
The only thing that worked for me was connecting both devices OFF, once connected I turned the monitor ON first and then started my Macbook Air.

Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). Ive got poblems with my thundebolt display conected to my macbook pro 13 inch mid 2011

im running a thunderbolt display with a macbook pro 13 inch, the display shuts off by itself, also when the macbook goes to sleep and its woken up the thunderbolt display stays off and i need to restart the sistem, the macbook also dosent recognize the display as soon as i turn it on i have to play around with it for a while conecting disconecting the thunderbolt cable for it to work, ive also got problems to eject the display as it is not shown as a disk.
any oe else have this problem, ive searched forums and youtube and no articles exist on thunderbolt displays and macbook pros 13 inch.

It's possible that it's the same for all registrations, even though the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air products are distinctly different. That information is autofilled, probably based on the serial number of your product, so even though it may say it's a MacBook Air, Apple may just be bundling all MacBooks under one group and labeling them MacBook Pro. But the serial number would tell them exactly which model you have, so there's nothing to worry about.
AppleCare Protection is based on the product group, so all MacBooks would be the same price, just as all iMacs would be the same price.

Macbook Pro 15 Inch, broken screen to external monitor

I have a 15 inch macbook pro that was stepped on and the screen was broken. I took it to genius and they said it was toast. Great help guys. I took it home and plugged it in from the mini display to HDMI and my desktop appeared on the television screen. Simple as that. Keep in mind this is a 42 inch panasonic TV. But when I plugged it into my vizio television that is in my personal room the desktop was to the left, (regularly you have to drag whatever you want to the right. It's a double screen) and what was appearing on the TV was just a blank desktop which is no help at all.
I need to see my desktop on my vizio television.
So i was reading about the mirror image option under >display >system preferences and I turned that on when I was doing work on the panasonic and now I can't access anything, from either television.
So I need to either
A. find a way to reset system preferences on my Macbook Pro 15 inch with no access to the desktop so I can get it working on at least the Panasonic television again.
Or
B. Find a way to get in up on the Vizio. (prefered.)
Any suggestions.

Its a keyboard shortcut to mirror or un mirror screen. Then you can use your mouse and what not. My macbook air fell about 1.5 feet to carpet and thanks to the thin design of the metal parts turned the dam n screen into a knife and sliced the wires for the screen, wifi, Bluetooth, and camera... Well one wire was still attached, the one that powered the screen. So all i had was a white screen. I know its accidental damage and all but to have it fall and break a week after my warranty ran out ***?!?! Apple must employ ninjas!

Is the MacBook Pro 13 inch good enough?

Is the non retina MacBook Pro 13 core i5 with 4g of ram good enough for nonprofessional video editing making apps surfing the web watching videos ? Or can I get a MacBook Air 13 inch ? is these two good enough for what I want ? And what is the difference between them and the MacBook Pro 13 inch core i7 with 8g of ram ? Is it a big difference between them ? Which one of these three you advice me to go with ?

That will work fine. I would eventually stick 8G of RAM in it though. I have 8G in mine and have run low and started paging out already. Safari and Flash are big RAM hogs.

MacBook pro 15 inch Hard drive noise - 2.4ghz vs. 2.53ghz

Hi,
I finally re-purchased a mid-range MacBook Pro 15 inch (500hd, 2.53 ghz). I had first bought it in September from the online store but it was scratched right out of the box and the bottom panel wasn't put in properly so I sent it back.
Anyways... I turned the new one on yesterday to find that the hard drive was very VERY noisy (in my opinion). I could hear it running (like whoosing air) while the TV was running from across the room. It was much much louder than my 4 year old MacBook (it's dead silent except for when the fan gets going), and much louder than both of my parents last gen MBPs (you can hear the hd in theirs but only very close to the computer).
I took it in today and they said it was normal, all hard drives are different, yada yada yada. They gave me a new one, but I haven't opened it yet because I want to know whether a low end 15 inch (2.4ghz) would be quieter than the 2.53.
My question is: *Would the low-level 2.4 ghz be any quieter than the 2.53 mid-level? Should I downgrade to the 2.4 or should I just accept that any MBP I get will be louder than I'd like it to be?*

Thanks for the description. My old (and I think my dad's MBP) has a Fujitsu, and I'm pretty sure the MBP I returned had a Toshiba HD.
I'm wary about opening the box because if it is noisy I'll have to pay the obscene restocking fee to return it. I suppose the only way I'll find out the noise level is to turn it on though.
I was thinking that if it is normal and it's just too loud for me, I could return it, swallow the fee, and just get the cheap MacBook. That may still make noise I'd still end up saving over $1000...
Anyways, if the general consensus is that they just make noise I'll have to open the box up and test it out and see if I can live with it.
