Macbook air wakes then sleeps again

my 2 month old macbook air wakes from sleeping only to go straight back to sleep again. Apple support did some tests and say that its a hardware issue and i have to take my virtually brand new laptop in for repair and do without it for how ever long it takes to repair.
Is this normal customer service with such a new device?

Yes. This is the normal AppleCare customer service.

  • Macbook Air Wake From Sleep Flicker

First off, I want to clear up something. The flicker that I am getting is not the same one that other 2013 MBA models were recieving with Photoshop. Nor is it the one where Safari may display some graphic glitches near the bookmarks area. I'm getting a weird white rectangular flicker when waking from sleep (lockscreen or no lockscreen). I've run the Apple Hardware Test, and the results returned no problems, so I'm pretty sure this is a software issue. The only settings I remember tampering with is VMWare, which flickered uncontrollably until I found a .plist fix online. Please help!

    Hi larry918,
If you are having issues with flickering on your MacBook Air, you may want to try the troubleshooting in the following article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
If that does not resolve the issue, you may want to try Safe Boot and/or a new user to see if the issue persists and to help narrow down the possible causes:

worksafe's link with the KeyChain fix is good.
This usually happens when KeyChain has two entries for the same WiFi network.
If repair did not work you can follow the manual steps:
    Disconnect WiFi
Open KeyChain from Applications / Utilities and find your WiFi network entry(ies) and delete all of them.
    Connect to your WiFi again.

  • Help help - my MacBook Air is in sleep mode and not accept my password

My macbook air is in sleep mode now but i'm not able to open it!!
the password dialogue would not accept any entries. It just beeped away at every key stroke but took nothing.
I have not changed my password!

The box just shakes when I type in the password. it doesn't give me the option to use guest login as I have changed the login setting to single user.

  • Re: Why does macbook air go to sleep spontaneously?

    THE PROBLEM IS BACK
Two days ago, the Macbook Air went to sleep spontaneously while my hand was on the trackpad.
Today, a Safari window spontaneously Zoomed In to where all the content could not be read. Zooming Out 5 times did reduce the content size, but it was still larger than before the Zoom In.
I've made a note of the time. Perhaps Apple can find somthing in the log to figure it out.

Which OS version are you running on your machine? When did this start?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Wakes from sleep then sleeps again

Hi there, I've posted a message previously on these boards asking a question about a sleep problem, wherein my iBook wouldn't wake from sleep and had to be forced shutdown to restart. This was resolved with the help of these boards in the form of a key command combination which reset some part of the hardware.
This issue isn't anywhere near as serious, but I'm wondering if it might hint at an overall problem. Sometimes, when I wake my iBook from sleep - all is well, but then the iBook goes pretty much straight back to sleep, although sometimes there is a 30 (or so) second pause before it does so. Any ideas? The iBook can always be woken again and always stays awake the second time around.
    Thanks

Try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU). It may think your battery is low. I can't remember how to reset the PMU on the iBook off hand.. but it should be in the Applecare database.

  • I locked and erased my macbook air, i then recovered it, how should i return it to normal again, i have an account so i was not an active back-up user but doesn't it do that without my constant attention

My macbook air was stolen I had to but a new pro on the cheap and use it to find my air. Now i have my air back and would like to restore it from the erase and lock procedures "Find my iphone" put it through. Can I use the cloud or is the erase deeper than that?

iCloud does not backup your computer. You'll need to restore your computer from the Time Machine backups you were making before the MBA was stolen.

  • 2011 i5 MacBook Air unable to sleep with lid open after upgrading to 10.7.1

    Hi,
After upgrading to 10.7.1 I noticed my 2011 i5 MacBook Air being unresponsive to wake events.  Per instructions I saw from other posts I pointed the Startup Disk to my main partition.  Shortly after (though I'm sure unrelated to Startup Disk) the Energy Saver preferences I noticed were no longer being adhered to.  I can make my machine sleep through
    1.  Apple -> Sleep optoin
    2.  Closing the lid
However, when the lid is up the Energy Saver options are not being adhered to.  I have tried
    1)  Resetting PRAM
    2)  Resetting SMC
    3)  Removing SystemConfiguration folder
    4)  Turning off auto update on all apps running
    5)  Poring through system logs
Interestingly enough, I looked through all system logs via Console and noticed during the time period in which sleep should be triggered NO EVENTS were being written to the system logs.
Currently I am using the PleaseSleep app to get my computer to sleep properly.  Please advise!
    - Frank
P.S.  I did do one thing was put a refridgerator magnet to the computer to "simulate" sleep but I doubt it would cause this broken behavior.

    Uninstall Growl. See:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • My  Macbook Air wakes up with a blank screen. Why do I have to shut down and start up to wake it up?

I use Mountain Lion on a macbook Air. When it goes to sleep  it wakes up with a blank screen, I have to shut down and start up again to wake it up. Can anyone help?

I had a similar thing on an old MacBook Pro where if I closed the lid, then reopened it before the sleep cycle took over, it would have a blank screen. I had to close the lid until the power light pulsed, then it would wake normally.
    Any similarities?

  • Macbook Pro wake from sleep fails

I am having problems with my Macbook Pro 15" waking from sleep. I was not having these problems until I re-installed OS X a few weeks ago, and now almost everytime I close the lid and take it home from work it will not wake up properly. It appears to be "half" waking as I can just about make out the image on the screen, but the backlight does not come on, and I can not see a pointer so I have to hold the power button and hard reset it.
I have also tried downloading the combo update to 10.6.3 and re-applying that to see if that helped, which it seemed to as I had a few days without a problem, then this morning I took it out to a customers site and it didn't wake up again.
Anyone else having these problems? Anyone got any ideas for a fix?
    I appreciate any help/ideas!!

    Hi there.
Both my wife and I have started having this problem with our MacBooks in the last few weeks. On waking from sleep the screen is black (though in the right light you can see that it's active, just not backlit), and the Mac goes to sleep again within a minor or so. Both Macs are less than a year old.
I discovered a fix by accident: give the machine a sharp nudge once it's awake! Makes me think there might be a problem with the motion sensor, in hardware or software. May disable it if this continues.
    Hi Mike,
I'm not sure this is really a solution to "sharply nudge" or slap your laptops. If the sudden motion sensor is bad, this is something we should be able to diagnose and have Apple repair. But I'm not entirely sure we have the same issue. For starters I have a 240GB SSD drive in mine that should have no sudden motion sensor, if I'm not mistaken.
These are bright, horizontal bolts, that shoot in perpendicular lines. The irony is that I cannot record them on-screen directly, but have to do so using a hand held camera. I also used the "Apple LCD Tester" and the striping does NOT appear on any of the solid images it kicks up.
I have yet to be able to isolate the source of the disruption and (as I mentioned before) it has a brand new logic board and the problem persists.
BTW, it's not my intention to hijack this thread. I think these threads are related and the only reference I've found in all of the discussions is the one mentioned here. I can start a new thread if I've violated protocol.
    Thanks again for everyone's help.

  • Macbook 11" - wake from sleep issues - Apple can't fix!

I've had this macbook Air 11.6" since Nov. 2010. Basically since day one I've had issues with waking from sleep from time to time. ( on average, it happens about 1-2 times a month. ). Basically it can happen anytime, this morning it happened after I had used my computer for a few minutes, then I shut the lid, carried it downstairs, opened the lid and it wouldn't wake, so I had to power cycle.
I've called Apple a few times about it and had it into the store twice - once they replaced the display and the second time the lady cleared some cache ( file with contents of RAM that is written to disk when sleep is entered? ).
Does anyone have details on clearing this RAM cache? When she did that I didn't have the problem for two months!
Also does anyone know if Apple has fixed this SW bug? Does it happens with Lion? ( I'm on 10.6.8 update now )
    Regards,
    Randy Krakora

    Have you solved this?
Got the very same issue with my mbp 13".
Most of the time, it won't wake up after going to sleep. Typically when it slept longer than 15 to 30 minutes, but not always.
Brought it to apple and they told me they fixed the issue but that was not the case.
This is a very tricky issue because it is intermittent, it takes time and it is thus hard to demonstrate at the Genius Bar.
Been struggling with this for several months with the hope to find a way to reproduce the issue but without success... and apple is unsupportive.

  • Macbook air does not sleep after closing the lid or putting into sleep

I've searched the message boards and external sites for answers and even spoke to Apple support.  I'm so frustrated because it affects my work everyday.  Its a 2013 Macbook Air running 10.9.2 and file vault.  I close the lid or force into sleep mode and the system stays on even though the display goes dark.  I travel alot so it goes into my briefcase and by morning its dead.  I have turned off bluetooth devices, reset the SMC, have no external devices connected other than a thunderbolt monitor, booted into safe mode and followed every suggestion out there.  Apple support person said he's never seen this before which is ridiculous because there are so many cases I have read about including Apple Support Communities.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    pmset -g assertions | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • Why won't my macbook pro wake from sleep?

My MacBook Pro 13" is awesome.  What is not awesome is that I can't wake it from sleep sometimes.  I have tried pressing keys, trackpad and power button with no success.  When I restart, I get the login screen and it will immediatly go to sleep or it will let me type in the password and then go to sleep.  What is going on here.  I thought that Lion would fix this, but it did not.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Everything seems okay with my computer.  It did not want to wake up 1 time since my last post.  I closed the laptop, let it sit for a few minutes and when I opened it back up it woke up and was fine.  The only thing I can figure is there is something that happens after the laptop has been charging for awhile.  It seems that everytime the computer didn't want to wake from sleep, it had been charging the battery or had just finished charging.  Weird thing to happen.  If you have this problem happen to you, try the steps mentioned earlier in this post (the answer from tjk) will probably fix it.
